What is going on here? Or do I find this surprising only because I generally ignore the mainstream media.

Obama’s Re-Election Means Fourth Term of Bush Terrorism Policies
...
Of course, the National Defense Authorization Act speaks for itself. Regardless of whether the president agreed with everything in the bill, its provisions illustrate why Obama's policies—at least on national security and counterterrorism—are closer to Bush's than Americans are led to believe.

Another example is the Obama administration's drone program, over which the president has asserted a prominent role in managing individual strikes.

Five days into "Operation Pillar of Defence", Anybody-But-Romney (The Liberal's Choice) addresses a waiting planet:

That Anybody-But-Romney's "speech" is a moral and intellectual disgrace goes without saying. It was never going to be anything else. But how did this dismal corporate drone and professionally dishonest dimwit ever acquire a reputation as a masterly public speaker?

Reminder: He's had five days to prepare that feeble, cliché-ridden, shamelessly stupid and in every way repulsive response. Five whole fucking days. The least he could do is appear fully awake. But why the fuck should he bother? It's not as if his audience cares, or even notices. It's not as if anyone anywhere is holding his feet to the fire, unless it's to warm those feet before kissing them.

At least 23 people are reported to have been killed in Gaza by Israeli bombardments so far on Sunday. Of those, at least 14 were women and children, Gaza health officials said.

This brings the death toll in Gaza since Israel launched its Operation Pillar of Defence on Wednesday to 69, the officials said.

Four more years of this despicable timeserver and placeholder. Four more years of his smug lazy adman's drone. Four more years of literally deadly boredom. Four more years of smarmy dumbass liberal Americans (backed up by smarmy dumbass Brits and Germans) telling me he's either A Good Man Doing His Best or else At Least Better Than Romney. And of course by 2014 his designated successor will be up against Cthulhu, and the infantile moral panic will begin all over again.

A couple of weeks ago Wombaticus Rex was wondering aloud whether RI was a research community or a support group. I don't know, but I'm glad this thread exists. It's an increasingly necessary public service. I am starting to detest Obama even more than I ever detested Bush, not least because I had to endure eight years of Bush before being sold Obama as t̶h̶e̶ ̶M̶e̶s̶s̶i̶a̶h̶ t̶h̶e̶ ̶N̶e̶w̶ ̶C̶i̶c̶e̶r̶o̶ t̶h̶e̶ ̶r̶e̶i̶n̶c̶a̶r̶n̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶M̶a̶r̶t̶i̶n̶ ̶L̶u̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶K̶i̶ a slight relief, and now I have to face four more years of this witless slimeball's sanctimonious ramblings because he's allegedly better than fucking Cthulhu.

Still, other people have more pressing problems right now:

What a fucking circus. How long do we have until the 2016 campaign begins? About three weeks?

Oh man, Cornell West has been relentless on the Obama thing today. Eeep! MLK day/Obama re-inauguration/pretty progressive address, I'll give the President a pass today.
Though I agree with the MLK quote West pulled out, regarding more US money spent on defense than social programs.

Giving him a pass kind of ignores the point Brother Cornell* was making, the implication of which would lead to the next logical conclusion--which is: MLK Day of all days is is not one to hold your tongue. And if one is going to go light on the president because of a speech**, there's a lengthy enough record of speeches to fall back on; one need never criticize***.

At this point, any person of conscience--especially those "supposed to be allies" with a prominent voice--should be criticizing unrelentingly.

*Though I wouldn't normally use it, I think he's earned that form of address.
**Sorry, if the speech comment was meant sarcastically.
***Though, speaking of MLK and speeches, his Nobel acceptance speech was as shameless as they come.

I agree, I was just speaking about my own personal moratorium on Obama criticism, as well as attempting to make peace with mainstream liberals.

I can't help but feel Obama is being setup, not like he really has much choice in the matter at this point.

Nothing is impossible and I won't fault you for choosing to believe in one person as victim of the monolith. That seems to make it easier for some people. At the end of the day, whether or not he is given the ultimatum "Be a despot or we'll eat your family and torture your soul for eternity" or some shit really doesn't matter. His regime is despotic; there is absolutely no getting around that. Unless, of course, one believes that his really being a sweet guy means there is a chance he will come to his senses and save the world (or, as I think the more standardized version tells it: He has been planning to subvert the Death Star all along, no matter what happens do not lose faith in the Democrat).

Either way, MLK certainly was conciliator as well as instigator (quite Christian, some might say) and, indeed, West is always civil in his righteous indignation. Still, he was was right, in my opinion, to declare his dismay at MLK's legacy being buried beneath all that BS. Somehow I doubt that the president is being forced by the all-powerful evildoers to take things as far as say, using his bible for chrissakes (no, wait, could that be part of his eleven-dimension chess game? We're saved!!). Nevertheless, I don't suppose he could defile the memory of King any more than he did during the Nobel acceptance speech.

But let's be clear: He has always been a power monger. There is plenty in the public record to indicate that his every move--from Harvard, through the streets of Chicago to the Illinois statehouse and the US Senate, to his first presidential campaign--has been rooted in duplicitous opportunism. And he is a Reaganite to boot.

So--considering how long he has been sucking up to heartless big money--if he "has no choice in the matter at this point", then that point of no choice, as it were, must have taken place long before any of us mere mortals can surmise... oh, dear! You don't suppose the rabid rightwingers are right; he must have had his soul sold at birth at some satanic mass in Kenya!?! But, then, still, it wasn't his fault! IT WASN'T HIS FAULT!! I guess we have to turn to God now. I wonder how that effects the chess match.

"A time comes when silence is betrayal."

----We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. The "tide in the affairs of men" does not remain at the flood; it ebbs. We may cry out deperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is deaf to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residue of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late." There is an invisible book of life that faithfully records our vigilance or our neglect. "The moving finger writes, and having writ moves on..." We still have a choice today; nonviolent coexistence or violent co-annihilation

F*CK Mainstream Liberals (a suggestion for a new thread topic).

and F*CK Obama as well, of course. And politicians in general. And any ahole that capitalized on MLK's name for pursuits contrary to his ideals.

I just learned from the interview with Jeremy Scahill the other day that Obama personally called the president of Yemen to tell him to keep in prison indefinitely the day of his release, this journalist who was working with Jeremy Scahil and various news outlets. He had been falsely accused of "supporting al qaeda" and a public outcry led to the president of Yemen calling for his release. I mean wtf? Why did Obama have to do that? Like what's it to him if a whistleblower journalist falsely accused gets out?

It bugs me...the mainstream liberals go "Oh wait, gays and women can openly serve in combat? Obama says he ended Iraq. He got bin Laden? He said we're ending Afghanistan in 2015? Whats there to NOT celebrate about this man?"

It's like the racist, foaming at the mouth right wingers(who should be loving Obama like they did Bush) are there to keep the left from questioning this administration.

MLK risked his life, knowing he could be killed or put in prison for life, any moment. Every day. Pure spiritual strength, and it's sick how the TPTB have
completely hijacked the MLK brand
