While I still don't yet see what is disturbing-in-a-Rig-Int-sense about deliberately torching the cabin as a method for this particular circumstance (provided the circumstance was really as it was reported), that doesn't mean I don't see how the big picture is disturbing in other senses.
I think torching the cabin is disturbing in a RI sense because post Waco there is the danger of killing unknown innocents and the whole dialogue that starts a la Billy Joel "we didn't start the fire".
In this case I guess they are owning up to starting the fire but what about the couple Dorner was possibly holding in the cabin? (Does anyone know if their presence has been proven or dis-proven?)
If there was a couple, did they make it out before? Were they executed by Dorner? Were they killed in the fire by the fire or friendly gun fire? Will torching the cabin make any analysis of that evident? In a urban or suburban stand off situation I assume you wouldn't torch a house with possible hostages inside, because this is a "cabin in the woods" its game? Seems like that part of the country has some pretty heavy duty military police gear, thermal imaging, armored tank type shit, etc Burning the cabin is Wild Bill Hickock shit. In fairness to them though they had already lost a deputy and another shot and they may have just wanted to squash the scenario fast.
This whole saga may have been a simple WYSIWYG, but just this blurb from a paper has some strange things. I mean if the owner rented the cabin to the couple wouldn't it be pretty easy to get a hold of them
today in the age of cell phones? And if they aren't able to be reached why not report that. Also wouldn't Dorner have used the hostages as leverage at some point?
BREAKING NEWS: Dorner shootout. Fear couple being held hostage...
NBC 4 Los Angeles reports the owner rented the cabin this weekend, but it had been vacant for some time before then.
Amazingly the cabin is across from the command post where hundreds of law enforcement officers have been conducting a manhunt for Dorner in the Big Bear area since last Thursday.
Commander Smith said currently, 1,045 officers continue to work on all leads received on Dorner, and they continue to search and work leads while these events unfold.
Commander Smith cautioned news media that no one can be positive the suspect who stole the vehicle is in fact Dorner, though it is likely. "Until we get him in handcuffs and in custody we don’t know for sure," said Smith.
Commander Smith said while there have been reports of hostages, they have not been confirmed.
