When you hear stories like this, you think initially it can't be true, that it's something straight out of a Cormac McCarthy novel. But nope, it happened: a former Mexican drug cartel leader was killed in the middle of a kid's party by a gang of gunmen dressed as clowns.

Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix, the 63-year-old former leader of the Tijuana Cartel, was shot surrounded by members of his own family at a party at a rented beach house in Cabo San Lucas, the popular tourist area in Baja California.

A 31-year-old man who dresses up as a scary clown and calls himself Vlad has been arrested and charged with both sexual child abuse and producing child pornography to share on the internet.

Martin Evanick, 31, from Illinois, is said to have taken inappropriate pictures of himself engaged in a sex act with a child. Officials believe he has abused the child several times since June of 2010.

Evanick portrays himself as a maniacal clown on his Facebook page, which says he’s a drummer in the band The Core of Your Nightmares.

He is being held without bond after being deemed a flight risk.

According to a press release sent from the U.S. Attorney’s office, the alleged violations happened in Madison County in June of 2010 and then again a year later in June of 2011.

On his Facebook page, several pictures of Evanick show him covered in blood wearing full clown makeup and costume, though it is not believed he worked as a professional clown.

According to Huffington Post, a friend wrote: 'Just heard some pretty disturbing news about your drummer Vlad, it's all over the news.'

A band member responded: 'We had absolutely no idea, we are just as appalled as you are, trust me!'

A friend of Evanick's wrote that the drummer 'always kept his life private'.

'I've known Vlad for eight years and would have never expected him to do this,' the person wrote. 'We are all shocked ... I know if we thought for a second he was doing this we would have put a stop to it.'

If convicted he faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

STATEN ISLAND — A mysterious clown has been roaming the streets of Staten Island and freaking out local residents.

Staten Islanders have been posting pictures and videos on social media of a person dressed up like a clown wearing a yellow outfit, red shoes and a mask while holding balloons and waving to the cameras, the Staten Island Advance reported.

The clown has been spotted at night near the Richmond Valley and Grasmere train stations and in front of a Chinese restaurant during the day on Richmond Avenue, according to the Advance and online posts.

"I wish I was joking dude, it scared the heck out of me," Michael Levy posted on his Instagram photo of the clown behind a tree at night. "I thought it was like some dummy or cardboard standup thing at first until he pointed at me."

Others were just as terrified.

"I just got freaked out coming home from the studio in Tottenville," musician Vin Innocente posted on Instagram, with a picture of the clown waving in front of a detour sign.

Even Staten Island Borough President James Oddo got in on the action by clowning around on Twitter.

"I reference Krusty the Clown in a tweet last week & now all hell is breaking lose," he wrote. "And they say BPs have no power."

Staten Island isn't the first place to have a mysterious clown roaming the streets. Last year, a clown dressed like Pennywise from the Stephen King book and film "It" was spotted in the small British town of Northampton. He was later identified as a 22-year-old college student and filmmaker.

The earliest online sighting dates back to earlier this month. And even though there's only been a handful of sightings, the clown has some scared for their life.

^^^^ I remember reading about this several years ago, but don't remember mention of an investigation. There is a book (available used on Amazon for $8) mentioned below:

"Mysterious America," a 1983 book by Loren Coleman, gives a good account of the 1981 phantom-clown scares. In May, reports of clowns riding in vans and threatening children surfaced in Boston and some of the surrounding communities. Shortly afterward the same story showed up in Providence, R.I.; Kansas City, Mo.; Kansas City, Kan.; Omaha, Neb.; Denver; and Pittsburgh."
