Take consolation and solace in the fact that the Tories were not elected to govern the UK in 2010.

Despite the determination and thoroughness with which Labour had disgraced themselves while in power, the Conservatives still couldn't win a majority of the vote in order to replace them as the mandated government.

Even with all the Labour voters who have given up voting in despair over the decades, the Tories still couldn't win outright. It took the collusion of the Orange Book Lib Dems to prop them on the throne, so they won't last long there.

But, sadly, they don't have to, because Labour will be just as bad in their own way, once they get back in. Worse I suppose, since it is always less pleasant (if no more painful) to be stabbed in the back than the front.

So who's doing what to get better Labor candidates and clean house in the upper reaches of the party? I don't see why that's so damn hard to do. Clean house.

:rofl2, we (the UK) are so skint, we can't even afford to keep our National road network maintained any more. This is not looking good. I'm sure I read somewhere recently that Queenie is down to her last mill. Probably did it on purpose to deny Charlie an inheritance. Good grief woman, that's spiteful.

Whatever happened to this? (rhetorical question)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... oyals.html

With an estimated fortune of £349 million, the monarch has even slipped one position to 12th place in the chart compiled by the US magazine Forbes.

But despite an expensive schedule of official foreign trips and a widely publicised maintenance backlog at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, the Queen's position in the ranks of the super-rich remains secure.

The biggest change at the top is a surprise fall for last year's richest royal, the Sultan of Brunei, and the rise of the King of Thailand to claim his place.

[...]

Forbes said its estimates of the Queen's wealth included unspecified property in England and Scotland, fine art, gems and a stamp collection built by her grandfather George V.

But much of the assets associated with the Queen are not her personal possessions. Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, the Crown Jewels and the Royal Collection are instead held in trust for the nation.

The Crown Estate, the royal lands dating back to 1066, generate around £110 million a year which is handed back to the Government in return for a £40 million payment to cover the cost of running the monarchy.

The true value of the Queen's private property, which includes Balmoral, Sandringham, a smaller collection of jewellery and some paintings has never been disclosed. She also derives a personal income of around £12.5million a year from the Duchy of Lancaster.

But a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace insisted last night: "The Queen's personal wealth has always been vastly exaggerated."

Or this, which is pretty ludicrous but gets a point across:

http://www.whoownstheworld.com/about-th ... landowner/

Queen Elizabeth II, head of state of the United Kingdom and of 31 other states and territories, is the legal owner of about 6,600 million acres of land, one sixth of the earth’s non ocean surface.

She is the only person on earth who owns whole countries, and who owns countries that are not her own domestic territory. This land ownership is separate from her role as head of state and is different from other monarchies where no such claim is made – Norway, Belgium, Denmark etc.

The value of her land holding. £17,600,000,000,000 (approx).

This makes her the richest individual on earth. However, there is no way easily to value her real estate. There is no current market in the land of entire countries. At a rough estimate of $5,000 an acre, and based on the sale of Alaska to the USA by the Tsar, and of Louisiana to the USA by France, the Queen’s land holding is worth a notional $33,000,000,000,000 (Thirty three trillion dollars or about £17,600,000,000,000). Her holding is based on the laws of the countries she owns and her land title is valid in all the countries she owns. Her main holdings are Canada, the 2nd largest country on earth, with 2,467 million acres, Australia, the 7th largest country on earth with 1,900 million acres, the Papua New Guinea with114 million acres, New Zealand with 66 million acres and the UK with 60 million acres.

She is the world’s largest landowner by a significant margin. The next largest landowner is the Russian state, with an overall ownership of 4,219 million acres, and a direct ownership comparable with the Queen’s land holding of 2,447 million acres. The 3rd largest landowner is the Chinese state, which claims all of Chinese land, about 2,365 million acres. The 4th largest landowner on earth is the Federal Government of the United States, which owns about one third of the land of the USA, 760 million acres. The fifth largest landowner on earth is the King of Saudi Arabia with 553 million acres
The new way of thinking is precisely delineated by what it is not.

The Tories drove this woman mad, made her seriously ill, and continued to harrass her even while she lay unconscious in hospital. She is not unusual.

Rochdale coma woman Sheila Holt told to 'find work'

Minister Mike Penning apologised to the family of Sheila Holt

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-26377119

An "unreserved apology" had been issued by the government to the family of a woman who was sent a letter encouraging her to find work even though she has been in a coma for two months.

Speaking in the Commons, the Minister for Disabled People Mike Penning said things had clearly "gone wrong".

Sheila Holt, from Rochdale, was invited to "intensive job-focused activity".

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk said the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) was hounding disabled people.

Sheila Holt's case was highlighted by Mr Danczuk during a debate on the effects of welfare reform on the sick and disabled.

Mr Danczuk said: "Sheila has suffered from severe bipolar [disorder] since childhood and regularly has traumatic experiences.

"She has not been in employment since she was 16 years old.

However she was pushed into the Work Programme before Christmas and she was finding it extremely difficult."

He said members of her family repeatedly informed Seetec, a contractor carrying out work capability assessments for the DWP, that she was not well "but they continued to get harassed by those organisations".

'Threatening her'
Ms Holt's father Ken said her last job was 27 years ago and last year she was forced to go on a job-seeking course for eight days.

After each day she became more and more agitated until she "cracked" her father said, and was hospitalised following a "manic episode".

But while in hospital she suffered a heart attack on 17 December last year and is still in a coma after suffering brain damage.

He said: "If they had left her alone she would not be in this condition. They were threatening her with cuts and she needs the benefits.

"I just believe it's all wrong, you should be chasing the people who are fit, get them to work, not them that are not fit. It's outrageous."

Mr Penning said: "I apologise, unreservedly, to the family as the minister responsible.

"The family have every right to be aggrieved and I hope she makes a full recovery."

It's not as though Dave Cameron didn't tell us that he wanted a return to Victorian values, eh Mac? I mean, he was fairly upfront about it back in Dec '12. Politicians lie with such ease that they can slip in the odd, actual bit of truth occasionally and everyone thinks they're bullshitting. But he wasn't.

Disabled man starved to death after benefits cut when Atos declared him fit for work

Starved: Mark Wood

Disabled Mark Wood starved to death four months after his benefits were cut, an inquest heard.

The “frail and vulnerable” 44-year-old weighed just 5st 8lbs when he was found.

He had been declared fit to work by Atos, leaving him struggling to survive on just £40 a week, despite numerous health problems.

[The bastards who run this repulsive firm should be in jail for manslaughter, as should the loathsome politicians who employ them. (WTF is the law for?)]

Mark died at his home in Bampton – part of David Cameron’s Oxfordshire constituency – in August last year.

He had Asperger syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder, in addition to cognitive behavioural problems, including a phobia of certain foods.

His GP Nicolas Ward told Oxford coroners court yesterday: “He was an extremely fragile individual who was coping with life.

"Something pushed him or affected him in the time before he died and the only thing I can put my finger on is the pressure he felt when his benefits were removed.”

Dr Ward added that he had not been contacted by Atos – the French-based firm that carries out benefit assessments – or the Department for Work and Pensions about his patient’s medical history.

He told the court that, had he been asked, he would have ruled him unfit for work.

Following last April’s assessment, Mark, described as “gentle and sweet”, lost his housing benefit and employment support, leaving him just £40 a week disability allowance – not even enough to cover his rent or utility bills.

Mark’s mum Jill Gant, from Abingdon, said the family knew nothing of his money problems until a few weeks before his death.

She gave him £250, but said that by then it was too late.

Mark’s sister Cathie Wood, 48, of North Oxford, said: “When the police found him, there was very little food in the house, just half a banana and a tin of tuna.”

She added: “Atos are completely to blame.

"Anyone who knew Mark’s complex problems would see he couldn’t work. ”

She added: “I’d like David Cameron and his Government to be aware of the personal cost of their policies and how they are affecting real people and causing real heartache.”

In a narrative verdict, Coroner Darren Salter said it was likely that Mark’s food phobias contributed to his death.

A spokesman for Atos Healthcare said: “We carry out assessments as professionally and compassionately as possible.”

A DWP spokesman added: “A decision on whether someone is well enough to work is taken only after thorough assessment.”

Tom Pollard, Policy and Campaigns Manager at Mind, said: “We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mark Wood.

“Unfortunately this tragic case is not an isolated incident. We hear too often how changes to benefits are negatively impacting vulnerable individuals, who struggle to navigate a complex, and increasingly punitive, system.

“We know the assessment process for those applying for Employment and Support Allowance is very stressful, and too crude to accurately assess the impact a mental health problem has on someone’s ability to work.

“This leads to people not getting the right support and being put under excessive pressure which can make their health worse and push them further from the workplace.

“We urgently need to see a complete overhaul of the system, to ensure nobody else falls through the cracks.”

I hope I live to see Cameron and his lackeys in dungeons in the Tower, but not before I've seen them in the stocks in Parliament Square. (If they insist on making it primitive, they can have it primitive. Socialism or barbarism, it's their choice.)

Sorry for the late reply Drew, that's a fair question, and a good one, but not one I can really answer. I have never voted Labour or been particularly supportive of them. When I got old enough to vote, they were already rubbish. I'm proud to say I didn't even vote for Blair (and already disliked him greatly) in the halcyon days of 1997, when everybody thought he was amazing, and things could only get better. I voted Lib Dem back then, which I'm considerably less proud of now.

I vote SNP these days, but that's a recent occurrence too. I only got onboard in 2011. Bit of a bandwagon-jumper I suppose. Most of the time I have not voted, because I haven't been on the rolls (like many of my peers) in an attempt to duck debt collectors, who look for you in the electoral register as a matter of routine.

Owen Jones, a reasonably likeable and presentable leftist who often appears on British TV, wants to clean up and leftercize the Parliamentary Labour Party, and has been advising people to vote for left-Labour candidates for some time now. He has a much bigger platform and of course much more exposure than the likes of me, and in a way I wish him much success in this endeavour.

But personally I no longer think the Labour party is either salvageable, or worth saving. Maybe I would feel different if I had supported it in the past. But I never did.

Privatise child protection services, Department for Education proposes

Experts sound alarm over proposal from Michael Gove's department to outsource children's services to private firms

The power to take children away from their families could be privatised along with other child protection services under controversial plans the government has quietly announced.

The proposal from Michael Gove's Department for Education (DfE) to permit the outsourcing of children's social services in England to companies such as G4S and Serco has alarmed experts. They say profit-making companies should not be in charge of such sensitive family matters, and warn that the introduction of the profit motive into child protection may distort the decision-making process.

[...]

Professor Eileen Munro, whom Gove commissioned to carry out an independent review of child protection published in 2011, said establishing a market in child protection would create perverse incentives for private companies to either take more children into care or leave too many languishing with dangerous families.

It's on the front page of Youtube right now, but popularity and temporary ubiquity do not make an artwork worthless. It's pretty good, I reckon. Surprising how much actual real-life policy intention Casseteboy has managed to fit into this comedy rapmashup.

Mac said (a long time ago, upthread):
except maybe for people like Andrew Mitchell - fair play to him, he does seem to have been misrepresented by the cops

Not quite so misrepresented, it seems:

Andrew Mitchell in £80,000 libel payout to 'Plebgate' PC BBC News 4 Mar 2015

The police officer at the centre of the "plebgate" row has accepted £80,000 in damages from Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell.

A judge ruled last year the MP probably had called PC Toby Rowland, an officer on duty at Downing Street's gates, a "pleb".

Mr Mitchell accepted using bad language but said he had not used that word.

The ex-chief whip has already paid £300,000 in legal costs to the Sun newspaper and the Police Federation.

He lost a high-profile action against News Group Newspapers, publishers of the Sun in November.

A judge said he had reached the "firm conclusion" that Mr Mitchell had used the "politically-toxic" word "pleb" in September 2012 when he was not allowed to cycle through the main Downing Street vehicle gates.
