Testimony By Louis Wolf To Board Of Visitors' Meeting, June 2012
Louis "Lou" Wolf is a former SOA Prisoner of Conscience. He was sentenced for crossing the line at Fort Benning in November 2008. He presented this testimony at the SOA/WHINSEC Board of Visitors' Meeting on June 28, 2012.

Testimony at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, Board of Visitors Meeting, by Louis Wolf – Jun. 28, 2012

The 1963 CIA ‘KUBARK’ interrogation and torture documents and the early 1980s torture manuals authored by the U.S. Army both documented what has been central to the SOA/WHINSEC curricula taught to thousands of officers from eighteen nations. Then, under significant public and congressional pressure, came the September 1996 disclosure of U.S. Army and CIA torture manuals proving that torture techniques were taught to numerous trainees at the School of the Americas. The secret was out and the national outcry that ensued led the Pentagon to change the school’s name to WHINSEC in January 2001.

In 1992, a former Paraguayan political prisoner, Martin Almada went to a Paraguayan police station accompanied by a judge in search of his police files. What he found, quite by accident instead, were thousands of documents piled high in a storage room detailing the kidnapping, torture, and murder of thousands of Latin American political prisoners during the 1970s. The documents also contained details of Operation Condor, a secret agreement among the Argentine, Bolivian, Brazilian, Chilean, Paraguayan, and Uruguayan security forces.

This conspiracy allowed the governments to track down, kidnap across borders, and murder their political enemies. The documents Almada uncovered became known as the “Horror Archives.” More than 80,000 people were killed or disappeared, and over 400,000 were imprisoned under the program.

"The [same] folder, in a section labeled ‘instruction at the School of the Americas,’ contain[ed] a manual teaching ‘interrogators’ how to keep electric shock victims alive and responsive. The manual recommended dousing the victims’ heads and bodies with salt water, and includes a sketch showing how this ‘treatment’ should be carried out."

—Journalist Stella Calloni, describing the contents of the Paraguayan "Horror Archives"

Despite official claims that torture is no longer taught at the WHINSEC, interrogation and its extensions sometimes leading to torture remains a logical and necessary component in the very wide gamut of special operations, commando tactics, sophisticated counterinsurgency techniques, covert procedures, military intelligence, covert intelligence activities, coup d’etat preparations, psychological warfare, psychological operations or “PSYOPS”, etc. Despite rhetorical statements that the SOA of yesteryear is not the WHINSEC of today, as we stand here, WHINSEC remains primarily a combat school that focuses on teaching combat and paramilitary skills.

According to official statistics, the ‘human rights’ curriculum taught in WHINSEC’s classrooms is neither compulsory nor well-attended. Courses fail to address well-documented human rights massacres conducted by SOA graduates in many countries including Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico, among others. There remains no provision of tracking or follow-up on the graduates after they return home.

Over the last decade, it is very telling that numerous graduates of SOA-WHINSEC courses as well as honorees in the SOA-WHINSEC ‘Hall of Fame’ have been implicated, tried, convicted, and imprisoned for their violent savagery, for wholesale murders and disappearances, for drug-running, and for rank corruption against the citizenry. Such cases include graduates from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and others.

These include Guatemalan SOA-trained member of the elite paramilitary Kaibiles brigade, Pedro Pimentel-Rios, who was sentenced to 6,060 years for his role in the 1982 massacre of 201 civilians. Just one month after the killings, he left to become an instructor at the SOA, then based in Panama. Four other Kaibiles members got 30-year sentences.

Colombian Col. Luis Fernando Borja, a 1986 SOA graduate, was sentenced to 19 years for his participation in 50 extrajudicial killings.

Bolivian Gen. Rene Sanabria and 1993 SOA graduate of a course in psychological operations, was sentenced to 14 years for cocaine trafficking. And the list goes.

A curious strategic choice by WHINSEC is the official seal on its web site that features “the colors blue and white and the Maltese cross, the insignia of Christopher Columbus during his explorations of the Caribbean Sea, which represents the heritage of security cooperation of the Western Hemisphere.” WHINSEC seems blind to Columbus’s infamous and violent legacy during his journey.

It was Henry Kissinger who famously wrote: "The illegal we can do right now; the unconstitutional will take a little longer."

In the prophetic words of Ecuadoran president Rafael Correa: "Some say the only reason there's never been a coup in the United States is because there's no U.S. Embassy in the United States."

However, SOA-WHINSEC is alive and well here in Columbus, Georgia.

= = = = =
Members of the Board of Visitors, I wish to place the balance of my written testimony in the record and add the following statement.

Since the founding in 1946 of the School of the Americas (then based in Panama), training during the ensuing 66 years by SOA-WHINSEC to more than 64,000 officers from eighteen Latin American nations has been the primary common thread in the documented suffering of untold thousands of innocent men, women, and children who have been defiled, tortured, massacred, disappeared, and executed by graduates of this institution. These victims must neither be forgotten, nor swept under the rug of history.

A cardinal principle in this country is that we are legally and morally accountable for what we do to our fellow citizens. I can not get my mind around how or why SOA-WHINSEC as an institution of the United States military has yet to be held legally accountable for what its alumni have done with the training they received here.

From his bench in January 2009, retired Judge E. Mallon Faircloth questioned: “Why do these officers do these things to their own people?” The undeniable and inescapable answer is: They just went home and did what they were trained to do——tens of thousands of times.

Northeast Greenland Begins Ominous Collapse — Giant Zachariae Isstrom Most Recent to Destabilize

http://robertscribbler.com/2015/11/13/11038/#comments

November 12, 2015:

North, south, east, and west. At all points of the compass, the entire outer edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet is flooding into the oceans with increasing velocity. For NASA it’s the absolute worst kind of OMG realization. For the world’s warming oceans and airs are clearly worsening an already visible Greenland melt. And a new report just out of the University of California (Irvine) today shows that a massive glacier containing enough water to raise seas by more than 1.6 feet (0.5 meters) is the most recent of a growing number of these ice giants to initiate a swift rush into the ocean.

Called Zachariæ Isstrøm, this enormous glacier dominates a large section of the northeast-facing shores of Greenland. The glacier, hundreds of feet tall and plunging hundreds more feet below the ocean surface, like many in our world, now faces the combined threat of warming airs and waters. A double insult that, according to researchers, over the past 15 years has led to first destabilization and then a rapid seaward acceleration.

Zachariae Isstrom Surges Toward Ocean

(1975 to 2015 time lapse shows recent rapid retreat of the Zachariæ Isstrøm glacier’s front. The dark green line marks the 2003 extent of the glacial front. Note the rapid retreat through 2015 in lighter shades blending toward white. Image source: Jeremie Mouginot/UCI via Climate Central.)

According to the new study — Fast retreat of Zachariæ Isstrøm, northeast Greenland — published today in Science, the glacier’s rate of seaward movement has tripled in velocity even as the pace of ice thinning along its grounding line doubled:

Warmer air and ocean temperatures have caused the glacier to detach from a stabilizing sill and retreat rapidly along a downward-sloping, marine-based bed… After 8 years of decay of its ice shelf, Zachariæ Isstrøm, a major glacier of northeast Greenland that holds a 0.5-meter sea-level rise equivalent, entered a phase of accelerated retreat in fall 2012. The acceleration rate of its ice velocity tripled, melting of its residual ice shelf and thinning of its grounded portion doubled, and calving is now occurring at its grounding line.

In total, more than 4.5 billion tons of ice is now estimated to be flooding out from this glacier and into the ocean each year. That’s a mountain of ice about 4.5 cubic kilometers in size hitting the world’s waters from just this single glacier every time the Earth completes one circuit around the sun. In other words, Greenland just opened a new floodgate to the North Atlantic. Researchers publishing the study estimate that it will take between 20 and 30 years for the glacier to melt back to an underwater ridge line that should somewhat slow its melt. But the real news here is that a human-forced warming of the globe has set a monstrous pile of ice, once thought stable, into a motion that will result in yet more global sea level rise.

To the north of Zachariæ Isstrøm sits the also melting Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden. A giant of ice in equal volume to that of Zachariæ. Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden sits on an upward sloping bed and so is not as subject to rapid destabilization as Zachariæ. However, the study found that the combined total ice mass of both glaciers in the range of 1 meter worth of sea level rise was now involved in a significant melt that would “increase sea-level rise from the Greenland Ice Sheet for decades to come.”

greenland-topography

(Map of Greenland topography showing large sections of the interior resting near or below sea level. As a result, warming waters have numerous avenues for invasion into the Greenland Ice Sheet. Numerous ways to melt Greenland ice from below. Zachariæ Isstrøm covers the upper right hand section of this image — sitting astride a low elevation channel the plunges deep into the heart of the current ice mass. Image source: Livescience.)

Greenland is the last major remaining bastion of glacial ice in the Northern Hemisphere. Surrounded on all sides by warming airs and waters, it is the most vulnerable large ice mass to the forces set in play by a human warming of the global environment. In total, Greenland holds enough ice to raise seas by 23 feet. And, in the geological past, just 1.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius worth of temperature increase above Holocene averages was enough to melt much or all of it.

Currently, human warming by Greenhouse gasses has pushed global average surface temperatures into a range about 1 degree Celsius hotter than the 1880s. It’s a temperature running into ranges that are now comparable with the Eemian — the interglacial period that occurred between 115,000 to 130,000 years ago. A period when oceans were about 13 to 20 feet higher than they are today.

But perhaps even more concerning is the fact that global greenhouse gas concentrations in the range of 400 ppm CO2 and 485 ppm CO2e are enough now to warm the Earth by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius long-term. It’s a heat forcing that would likely spell the end for Greenland’s ice if it remained in place for any significant period. A heat forcing more comparable with Pliocene and Miocene ranges when the world’s glaciers were even more greatly reduced and seas were 30 to 130+ feet higher than they are presently.

Unfortunately, what the building global heat and currently very high greenhouse gas heat forcing means is that the Earth System will continue to accumulate warmth for some time. And as this happens more and more glaciers — both in Greenland and Antarctica — are going to destabilize, speed up, and contribute increasing melt volumes to the world ocean. Eliminating greenhouse gas emissions at this time and pushing to return to atmospheric levels in ranges below 350 ppm CO2 is therefore absolutely necessary if we are to have much hope of preventing ever-worsening rates of glacier destabilization and related contributions to sea level rise.

BREAKING: US Air Strike Hits ISIS in Libya Chief, Presumed Dead // Kevin Baron

The head of the Islamic State in Libya is presumed dead after a U.S. airstrike targeted him early Saturday.

A senior U.S. official told Defense One that the man who goes by the nom de guerre Abu Nidal was believed to have been killed by the operation, which the official stressed was underway before the Paris attacks began on Friday and was not linked to that event.

The strike would be a significant blow to the Islamic State’s ambitions as the organization, its influence and it’s supply of foreign fighters has spread across North Africa. Libya has been a major concern for French military officials who have lobbied Washington to give that country greater attention due to its proximity to Europe, growing pool of foreign fighters and their potential to cross into Europe.

Two things France wanted to do:

1shut the borders to refugees; and

2join the war against the Syrian government.

“Paris attack may be false flag operation: Analyst”

“Another Paris False Flag Attack?”

“A warning about the Paris terror attacks”

You can see immediately why ISIS would want to put a bomb in a Russian plane. Russia is at war with ISIS. What possible motive could ISIS have to open up a new front now involving France? Aren’t they busy enough? On the other hand, if ISIS is just an intelligence tool of the Zio-American Empire, giving the French a reason to pretend to increase the fight against ISIS as a cover for an operation against the Syrian government, while simultaneously increasing Islamophobia and anti-refugee sentiment in Europe . . . well, everything suddenly makes perfect sense!

“Snowden Effect” in Action: NSA Authority to Collect Bulk Phone
Metadata Expires

https://theintercept.com/2015/11/28/sno ... a-expires/

Nov. 28 2015, 6:14 p.m.

The National Security Agency no longer has legal authority to collect
phone metadata in bulk as of midnight, Saturday, November 28. The
executive branch previously claimed the government possessed such
authority under Section 215 of 2001’s USA PATRIOT Act, which gave the
FBI power to demand “any tangible things” needed “for an investigation
to obtain foreign intelligence information.” The FBI was thus able to
obtain the phone records of millions of Americans from U.S.
telecommunications companies and turn them over to the NSA.

The USA FREEDOM Act, signed into law on June 2 earlier this year, gave
the executive branch 180 days to wind down the bulk collection
program. According to the Tumblr of the Office of the Director of
National Intelligence, the government is “prohibited from collecting
telephone metadata records in bulk” starting November 29. The
executive branch will now be able to obtain phone metadata by asking
the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to order
telecommunications companies to turn over specific records.

The end of the bulk collection program is a modest but real victory
for former NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden, who
provided documents concerning the program to Laura Poitras and Glenn
Greenwald, co-founding editors of The Intercept. The first article by
Greenwald based on the documents leaked by Snowden, published on June
6, 2013, was about the bulk collection

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, the United
States lost more than its president. It lost its innocence. The
subsequent investigations into the young president’s killing raised
more questions than they answered — and caused Americans to lose faith
in their government. Indeed, for many people in the US and across the
world, the assassination marked the point at which their fundamental
perceptions changed.

Just after the Warren Commission released its report on the
assassination, the level of public trust in government was at 77
percent. A decade later it had plummeted to less than half that (36
percent).

Kennedy’s death and the circumstances surrounding it gave birth to a
movement. This movement, composed of all kinds of people, is dedicated
to investigating the story behind the story, to exposing the power
networks hidden beneath surface events. These machinations have been
dubbed “Deep Politics.” Those who study it believe there is much more
to national and world events than what the public is told by
government officials and evening newscasters — and, as you will see,
Peter Dale Scott proves it.

On the occasion of the anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination,
WhoWhatWhy is pleased to present excerpts from Chapter 2 of Scott’s
latest work – Dallas ’63: The First Deep State Revolt Against the
White House by Peter Dale Scott (Open Road Media, September, 2015).

For Part 1, please go here; Part 2 go here; Part 3 go here; Part 4 go

The Sources of the Stories and the ZR/RIFLE Assassination Project

In the pages to follow, I shall show how Staff D, the small CIA unit
responsible for SIGINT (signals intelligence), and thus for electronic
intercept operations, was also the unit which housed the CIA’s
ZR/RIFLE assassination project. The Mexican DFS, which supplied the
raw intercept data to the CIA in Mexico City, also overlapped in many
ways with the Cubans and organized crime personnel picked for the
CIA-Mafia anti-Castro assassination plots.[163]

It is possible that the special circumstances in Mexico City explain
why the CIA’s generic assassination project, ZR/RIFLE, was housed
within the Staff D’s intercept operations. (“ZR” normally prefixed the
cryptonym for a intercept program.) In his hunt for killers, ZR/RIFLE
chief William Harvey searched for individuals with criminal
connections.[164] The Mexico City intercept operation against the
Soviet Embassy was by far the largest and most important CIA intercept
program anywhere in the world.[165]

And the DFS, the local intelligence service on which the CIA relied to
man its listening posts, was probably the intelligence service with
the profoundest links to the international drug traffic and to
American organized crime.

Morales was a CIA officer and killer who “was well known as the
Agency’s top assassin in Latin America.” He also openly described
Kennedy’s conduct during the Bay of Pigs operation as “traición
(betrayal).” According to a friend, Morales once ended an anti-Kennedy
tirade with the words, “Well, we took care of that son of a bitch,
didn’t we?”

Walmart Recruited FBI and Lockheed Intelligence Unit for Surveillance
of Employee Union Activity

Friday, November 27, 2015

http://www.allgov.com/news/controversie ... ews=857944

When workers at Walmart tried to unionize two years ago, company
executives turned to a defense contractor and the FBI to keep track of
labor organizers and supporters.

Using documents obtained from the National Labor Relations Board
(NLRB), Bloomberg Businessweek reported the retail giant launched a
surveillance campaign targeting OUR Walmart, which organized protests
in 2013 against the company.

Walmart leadership was so concerned about the union activity that “it
hired an intelligence-gathering service from Lockheed Martin,
contacted the FBI, staffed up its labor hotline, ranked stores by
labor activity, and kept eyes on employees (and activists) prominent
in the group” Susan Berfield reported for Bloomberg Businessweek.

“We are fighting for all workers to be paid a fair wage and enough
hours to put food on the table and provide for our families,” Mary Pat
Tifft, a Wisconsin Walmart employee of 27 years, said, according to
Common Dreams. “To think that Walmart found us such a threat that they
would hire a defense contractor and engage the FBI is a mind-blowing
abuse of power.”

The media investigation into Walmart revealed that inside its global
security operation is an Analytical Research Center (ARC), led by a
former FBI officer, Ken Senser. And overseeing ARC is an executive,
Steve Dozier, who used to run the Arkansas State Police. Walmart is
headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas.

ARC also took action the year before in 2012 when labor activists
talked about organizing strikes on Black Friday that year, which could
have hurt sales on one of the biggest shopping days of the year. “When
we received word of potential strikes and disruptive activity on Black
Friday 2012, that’s when we started to ask the ARC to work with us,”
Karen Casey, who was in charge of Walmart’s U.S. labor relations, told
the NLRB. “ARC had contracted with Lockheed leading up to Black Friday
to help source open social media sites.”

Additionally, a Lockheed analyst, Christian Blandford, monitored the
social media of activists in Bentonville before Walmart’s shareholder
meeting two years ago.

How J Edgar Hoover got Larkin deported from US
Future FBI chief fabricated evidence to oust 'Big Jim' the agitator,

HERO’S WELCOME: Jim Larkin (centre) cuts a dour figure as he is
greeted by supporters on his return from America

When we think of James Larkin, what probably comes to mind is the 1913
Lockout or the iconic statue on Dublin's O'Connell Street of 'Big Jim'
with arms aloft in the middle of one of his famous orations. We are
unlikely to consider - or perhaps we are even unaware of - the
considerable time he spent in the United States.

That Larkin's experience should intersect with the infamous figure of
J Edgar Hoover, who would later head the FBI, is something one would
never expect - but it did happen in 1923 when Hoover colluded in the
fabrication of evidence to achieve Larkin's deportation.

Crushed by the Lockout, Larkin had gone to the US in October 1914,
hoping to develop a new career as a globe-trotting agitator. In 1918
his James Connolly club in New York's Greenwich Village became the hub
of a campaign to turn the Socialist Party of America into a communist
party. Among his confederates was Jack Reed, just back from Russia and
soon to be the author of a celebrated account of the Bolshevik
revolution, Ten Days That Shook The World. When the red scare of 1919
led to arrests, Larkin was seen as one of the biggest fish in the net.

Hoover took a keen interest in his case. All this radicalism, he
thought, was due to foreign malcontents and the answer was
deportation. Even after Larkin was gaoled in 1920, Hoover complained
to the New York State Attorney that he was carrying out propaganda
work from prison.

Worse followed for Hoover. Imprisonment won Larkin worldwide sympathy
as a man punished for his beliefs rather than anything he said or did.
One of his many famous prison visitors was Charlie Chaplin. Jim's
brother, Pete, was invited to Hollywood to speak to stars like Charles
Ray and Milton Stills. Chaplin sent presents to Jim's wife, Elizabeth,
and her children in Dublin.

In January 1923, Al Smith, New York's first Irish-American governor,
was persuaded that Larkin was a political prisoner and had him
released from Sing Sing with a free pardon. Hoover immediately set
about preparing a case for deportation in collaboration with William J
Burns, Director of the Bureau of Investigation, later the FBI. The
problem was there was no evidence Larkin had advocated violence. Burns
collated reports from field offices and found that "certain statements
are quoted and attributed to Larkin but copies of the reports in which
the statements appear cannot be located".

On January 23, 1923, he wrote to his New York 'Special Agent in
Charge' asking if quotes attributed to Larkin at a meeting in the Odd
Fellows Hall, New York, in 1919 could be proven. Despite a negative
reply, Hoover offered to draft a deportation case for the Department
of Labor. To seal the case, Burns supplied the missing evidence,
alleging that at the Odd Fellows Hall, New York City, on February 16,
1919, Larkin appealed for money, using such slogans as 'Every Dollar
Kills the Capitalist'. This was hardly the required smoking gun, but
Burns told the Department of Labor: "... it is very evident that James
Larkin is a person who fully comes within the provisions of the
immigration law providing for deportation of an alien who advocates
the overthrow of the Government of the United States by force or
violence. It would be very desirable to effect his deportation at an
early date…"

A deportation warrant was issued on April 18.

Larkin was arrested on April 19, taken to Ellis Island and deported.

On Monday, April 30, he landed at Dun Laoghaire where his sister and
40 supporters greeted him. A few hours later, a crowd of 4,000
followed him to Liberty Hall. Home was the hero.

Burger King manager: Police erased video of Chicago shooting

CHICAGO (AP) — A Burger King manager who accuses Chicago police of
erasing surveillance video in the case of a black teenager shot last
year by a white officer says he has testified before a federal grand
jury investigating the shooting.

Jay Darshane tells the Chicago Tribune that the FBI also took the
restaurant video recorder containing all of its surveillance images.

Federal prosecutors said this week that their investigation is
continuing, but would not comment further.

Under a judge's order, the city released police squad car video
showing the shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Cook County
prosecutors also announced this week that the officer has been charged
with first-degree murder.

FBI's 'Shark Tank' — bureau turns to field agents for mobile innovation

The FBI is depending more on agents to help develop, test and adopt mobile applications in the field.

The FBI is looking to field agents — and a reality TV show format — to help develop the newest mobile technologies to support their mission.

Hoping to keep up with the pace of technology development, the bureau is focusing on efforts that enable frontline personnel to drive innovation, according to Kevin Tunks, product development and mobile strategy lead in the FBI's mobile technology office.

One of those enablers came to Tunks and his team straight from the television. They use a "Shark Tank" pitch meeting model to spur internal innovation, he said Thursday at a Bloomberg Government event. Just like the popular ABC television show, the FBI program lets people with big ideas — in this case field agents — pitch their ideas for mobile applications to a board of executives and other stakeholders. But unlike the "sharks" on the show, the FBI team uses the model because they "don't have a lot of development budget."

After the pitch, "as long as everybody [on the board] nods yes, or doesn't say no, it moves forward," Tunks said, though he didn't comment on the funding process once the ideas are approved. The agents have 60 days to move their ideas into prototypes, he said.

"Worst case scenario, we've lost 60 days of somebody's time," Tunks said. "Best case scenario, we've gotten a really transformational product out of a group of people ... the people who really do the mission that are creating a solution for themselves."

So far, the concept has resulted in "10-plus apps," he said, which have been received well in the field, "because it was built by the field, it was built for the field."

Tunks, who explained his role as taking the 30,000 Android phones the FBI bought earlier this year "beyond just email ... to build custom and internal apps that really unlock new business processes," said the bureau is depending more on field agents, whether they're IT experts or amateur mobile hobbyists who serve the bureau in some other capacity, to help develop, test and adopt mobile applications in the environments in which they're meant to be used.

"We really have turned a lot over to the field," Tunks said. "Our moniker is 'How can we do IT at mission speed?'"

"We focus our small energies on being able to create platforms ... and really leveraging our own internal resources to do things," he added.

Sometimes that means developing more effective governance so agents can follow latest industry practices, he said, and sometimes that's "building the underlying components that allow people to really build on top of so that they're just doing that top of the

Librarians and privacy advocates ally to condemn cybersecurity bill

American Library Association and civil liberties groups warn of ‘abusive government spying’ and urge lawmakers to oppose ‘Frankenstein’ version of Cisa

US librarians have joined with a host of civil liberties groups to condemn a cybersecurity bill now passing through Congress they claim will be both “unhelpful” and “dangerous to Americans’ civil liberties”.

The American Library Association, the world’s oldest and largest library affiliation, has joined with 18 other groups including Fight for the Future, Demand Progress and FreedomWorks to issue a letter to the White House and Congress urging lawmakers to oppose the final version of a bill they claim will dramatically expand government surveillance while failing to tackle cyber-attacks.

Politicians from both sides of the House have been pushing for stronger cybersecurity measures in the wake of the Paris attacks and the recent San Bernardino shooting.

Republican House speaker Paul Ryan has been leading the charge to push through legislation and reconcile two bills, the Protecting Cyber Networks Act (PCNA) and the National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement with the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015 (Cisa), a controversial bill that passed a Senate vote in October.

The speed with which Ryan is trying to push through a compromise has worried privacy activists. “We’ve just learned that the Intelligence Committees are trying to pull a fast one,” Nathan White, senior legislative manager at digital rights advocate Access, said in a recent email to supporters. “They’ve been negotiating in secret and came up with a Frankenstein bill – that has some of the worst parts from both the House and the Senate versions.”

According to the letter’s signatories, the proposed “conference” legislation would:

● Create a loophole that would allow the president to remove the Department of Homeland Security, a civilian agency, as the lead government entity managing information sharing.

● Reduce privacy protections for Americans’ personal information.

● Overexpand the term “cyber threat” to facilitate the prosecution of crimes unrelated to cybersecurity.

● Expand already broad liability protection for information disclosure.

● Pre-empt state, local or tribal disclosure laws on any cyber-threat information shared by or with a state, tribal or local government.

● Eliminate a directive to ensure data integrity.

Moreover, they argue, the legislation would dramatically expand the amount of sensitive information held “by government agencies with dismal records on data security” and institute “blind, automatic transfer of personal information to intelligence agencies, including the National Security Agency, that would be authorized to use the information for non-cybersecurity purposes”.

“The final version of this bill is an insult to the public and puts all of us in greater danger of cyber-attacks and government surveillance,” said Evan Greer, campaign director of Fight for the Future, who organized the letter. “This was already a fundamentally flawed piece of legislation, and now even the meager privacy protections it provided have been gutted, exposing it for what it really is: a bill to dramatically expand abusive government spying.”

US Judge Names Ex-FBI Director to Help Settle Volkswagen Lawsuits
January 11, 2016

http://m.voanews.com/a/us-judge-names-e ... 41132.html

A federal judge in California overseeing more than 500 lawsuits filed against German automaker Volkswagen AG over its excess diesel emissions on Monday said he planned to name a former FBI director to help settle the cases.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said he would name Robert S. Mueller, former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as "settlement master" in the VW lawsuits.

Mueller, a Washington lawyer, will "use his considerable experience and judgment to facilitate settlement discussions among the various parties in these complex matters," Breyer wrote on Monday.

Breyer said the need for a settlement adviser was "urgent" and will give VW and lawyers for all sides until Jan. 15 to object to the appointment.

VW potentially faces billions of dollars in claims from owners of vehicles with excess emissions. Separately, the Justice Department sued VW last week under the Clean Air Act seeking up to $46 billion.

VW has admitted to using software to allow 580,000 vehicles to emit up to 40 times legally allowable pollution. It also faces investigations by 47 state attorneys general.

Breyer said there are "few, if any, people with more integrity, good judgment, and relevant experience" than Mueller.

Breyer said Mueller is "uniquely qualified to work with and earn the trust of the parties, including the consumer and car dealer plaintiffs, the United States government, the Volkswagen defendants, and the interested state governments."

Last month, VW named its own adviser, lawyer Ken Feinberg, to create a VW diesel owner claims program. Feinberg sai

Fifth annual MLK Memorial ceremony highlighted by address from FBI Director James Comey

Updated: Mon 1:49 PM, Jan 18, 2016

WASHINGTON - A cold morning in Washington DC didn’t keep folks from heading to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall. Visitors went to honor Dr. King’s birthday, and listen to words from FBI Director James Comey.

The fifth annual Memorial Foundation ceremony to honor Dr. King took place in single-digit weather. Director Comey joked that he would speak for 90 minutes before making a short speech in front of visitors huddled together. He started off by saying that he sends all new FBI agents to the memorial.

"I want them to remember the interaction between the FBI and Dr. King so that the FBI remains constrained and overseen and checked,” said Comey.

Director Comey says he wants law enforcement and the communities they protect to grow closer together, not further apart. Maryland resident Fuller Ming brought his son to the service, and says he notices the division Comey is talking about.

"It’s painful,” said Ming. "I see what’s happening and how we tear each other apart. If it’s not race, it’s religious wars. It’s just...it’s painful.”

After Director Comey’s brief remarks, he laid a wreath at the bottom of the massive Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

Harry Johnson is the President of the Memorial Foundation that built the memorial. He says Comey’s remarks regarding law enforcement and community were spot on.

"We need law enforcement, we need community

New Book Says FBI Was Mastermind Behind MLK Assassination and Its Cover-up

Aides on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. with the stricken Dr. King.*New Book Says FBI Was Mastermind Behind MLK Assassination and Its Cover-up

As the nation celebrates what would have been Martin Luther King’s 87th birthday on January 15, we must ask some questions: What role did the FBI play in King’s assassination? What did they know, and what role did the agency play in covering up the truth about his murder?

It is no surprise that J. Edgar Hoover, the founder and head of the FBI until his timely departure in 1972, waged a war against Black America, civil rights leadership and Black nationalist organizations with his COINTELPRO program. As a result of the program — its role to “prevent the rise of a Black messiah”— Black leadership ended up murdered and imprisoned, and its institutions compromised and decimated. At one point Hoover called Dr. King “the most notorious liar in the country,” as the FBI monitored the civil rights leader, bugged his hotel rooms, and even sent him a letter encouraging him to commit suicide. But two authors believe the agency did even more, having a direct role in his assassination through FBI informants.

In their book, Killing King: The Multi-Year Effort to Murder MLK, Stuart Wexler and co-author Larry Hancock delve into the notion of a cover-up into the King assassination. Specifically, they allege that the FBI under Clarence Kelly, Hoover’s successor, misled Congress by destroying files related to the murder of King. Wexler says the bureau disobeyed a direct order to preserve all materials, destroying files in two field offices on Tommy Tarrants, a high-ranking Ku Klux Klan member from Mississippi, in 1977. This came as a new Congressional committee was established to investigate the assassination of King and President Kennedy. The author claims there was something about Tarrants that made the FBI upgrade him from an obscure racist to a major player in the assassination.

“I have no doubt this was done deliberately. They are not destroying everybody’s files, they are selectively destroying files,” Wexler told the Daily Mail. “They wanted Tarrants to give evidence to the committee; they didn’t want him to be a suspect.”

Meanwhile, according to Wexler, a man named Laude Matthews was in line to take over the leadership of the Mississippi Klan. Wexler refers to Matthews as “a big time deep cover agent for the FBI.”

“’We can imagine a situation where the FBI does not want the Congressional investigation to lead back to Laude Matthews,” Wexler speculated, offering that the Mississippi Klan was among the most violent, anti-Black chapters of the organization. “They did not want to expose him to suspicion. Imagine what it would have looked like if an FBI informant had a connection to the King assassination?”

The author added that if true, it would prove to be one of the worst scandals in the history of the agency.

“If the FBI had covered its tracks over King’s assassination, it would fit into the pattern of duplicity and double dealing that marked the bureau’s handling of King,” he said.

Tarrants, Wexler noted, eventually steered away from his radical Christian racism and is now a preacher.

“Until then he had been in prison for a bombing and he’d made a full conversion. The FBI arranged for him to get out of prison, which was unheard of,” Wexler said.

In their previous book, The Awful Grace of God, Wexler and Hancock chronicled a multi-year effort by a national network of white supremacists to kill Dr. King, and their systematic attempts to do so. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray confessed to the murder but later recanted.

And now, as America finds itself in the midst of a new movement for the rights of Black folks, white domestic terrorism is on the rise. And as

Obama Announces No-Buy List for Guns

No Buy List
Seeks to change arbitrary “No-Fly List” into “No Buy List”. If you can’t buy guns, you sure can’t own guns. Democrats cheer wildly at announcement.
Alan Korwin
Alan Korwin

Arizona – -(Ammoland.com)- The man in the White House has publicly announced his intention to summarily disarm the public based on a swiftly growing secret police list.

“Right now, people on the no-fly list can walk into a store and buy a gun. That is insane. If you’re too dangerous to board a plane, you’re too dangerous, by definition, to buy a gun.”

That’s a direct quote from Barack Hussein Obama.

Are those people charged with something? Have they been convicted of anything? That’s rhetorical. No to both questions.

I asked the FBI at the SHOT Show in Jan., 2016. They are just banned from flying. Why? The FBI won’t say. It’s a secret. How do you get on the list? I found out that’s a secret too. You lose your right to fly by secret. The list is kept secret by police. Secret police list. Those are words we’re not supposed to connect in this free country.

People on this secret police list can still take Amtrak, or a bus, or drive to Cincinnati. Or anywhere. If those people are that dangerous why are they still walking around? I asked the FBI. No answer. What sense does that make? Who are these people? That’s a secret too. Maybe they can down a plane with a karate chop.
Some things about this no-fly list just don’t fly…

Does it mean the scanners and screening at TSA airport checkpoints don’t work on those people? That’s why we need the list? Those folks could board with guns and knives and bombs if we didn’t ban them — with a list? The X-ray machines, wands, bomb swabs, anal probes and magnetometers work for the rest of us, but not on them? Does that make sense to you? Maybe checkpoints are just a feel-good scam to keep us in line like the skeptics say.

Well it’s not a secret to (name withheld to protect the innocent). I met her at a trade show in the press office. Her toddler daughter got a flight ticket with her, but when they got to the gate, they found out her daughter’s on the list, and couldn’t board. Just like Senator Ted Kennedy. It turns out loads of ordinary people are on the list. The ACLU is fighting the whole concept, for a whole lot of good reasons. But not for the best reason.

“That it is insane.”

During his recent gun-control TV town hall, this man who took an oath to “preserve, protect and defend” our Constitution repeated this twisted logic, and wild cheers erupted from the democrat-packed audience. It makes sense, it has a certain appeal, if you don’t look at it too hard like we’re doing — or if you’re brain dead. If you really want guns to “just go away” this would work — until you realize it leaves guns in the hands of the agents running the list.

An arbitrary list, with no checks and balances, no functional controls or due process of any kind, will deny our fundamental constitut
