Dec. 26, 2016
The author, scholar and activist, Angela Davis, will be the keynote speaker at a banquet Jan. 14 in Memphis, said Mid-South Peace and Justice Center Executive Director Brad Watkins.

"Her huge body of work in the history of resistance and social change has been an inspiration to so many people," Watkins said.
Watkins said there is "no better time to reaffirm our commitment to the struggle for positive social change, to oppose bigotry and sexism and racism. I think she'll be a perfect person to bring the experiences of the past into a modern context and get us all ready for the work that is to come."
Davis, 72, a professor in the History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies Departments at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has lectured across the country and internationally. She is the author of nine books including, "Women, Race, and Class," "Are Prisons Obsolete?" and "The Meaning of Freedom."
Davis' activism began as a young person in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1970, Davis was placed on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. She was arrested, incarcerated and ultimately found not guilty of murder, conspiracy and kidnapping in a Marin County, California courtroom shootout. The prosecution had alleged she was involved in a plot to take hostages and free three prisoners known as the Soledad Brothers. Her incarceration sparked the "Free Angela Davis" campaign.
Davis visited the University of Memphis in 1992 at then-Memphis State University where she spoke to an overflow crowd of more than 500 people and challenged students to question history as they knew it. She returned to the University of Memphis in 2008 where she voiced support for restoring voting rights to people convicted of crimes and opposition to the prison system.
January's event is sponsored by the criminal justice reform advocacy group Just City, Rhodes College and the Women's Foundation of Greater Memphis.
"In an age of social media activism I find myself often in awe of activists of days past," said attorney Carlissa Shaw, 29, of Memphis, who plans to hear Davis speak. "Activists that put their lives and livelihood in jeopardy to support their cause. Angela Davis makes the short list of

THE TOP CENSORED STORIES OF 2015–2016
The presentation of the Top 25 stories of 2015-2016 extends the tradition originated by Professor Carl Jensen and his Sonoma State University students in 1976, while reflecting how the expansion of the Project to include affiliate faculty and students from campuses across North America has made the Project even more diverse and robust. During this year’s cycle, Project Censored reviewed 235 Validated Independent News stories (VINs) representing the collective efforts of 221 college students and 33 professors from 18 college and university campuses that participate in our affiliate program.

A Note on Research and Evaluation of Censored News Stories
How do we at Project Censored identify and evaluate independent news stories, and how do we know that the Top 25 stories that we bring forward each year are not only relevant and significant, but also trustworthy? The answer is that each candidate news story undergoes rigorous review, which takes place in multiple stages during […]

State Department Employee Makes Deal in Child Porn Case
December 26, 2016

Summary: A Department of State diplomatic security officer made a plea to one felony count for child pornography.

Diplomatic security officer for the Department of State was caught in an undercover FBI child pornography operation.  The officer pleaded guilty to one felony count after striking a deal with federal prosecutors. James Cafferty, 45, pleaded to transporting child pornography. Cafferty faced a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison but the judge could have sentenced him up to 20 years. In the end, he was sentenced to seven years.

Cafferty’s most recent position was at the U.S. Embassy in London. In the plea agreement filed in a U.S. District Court in Tampa, he admitted to bringing 15,000 images of child pornography on three hard drives with him on his trip back from England in August. The images were both photos and videos.

A search of his Largo, Florida home by law enforcement found over 30,000 child porn images on digital storage media devices. When questioned by federal agents, he admitted to “photo-shopping himself into scenes constituting

West Oakland Action Feeds Folks, Saves a Home, Denies Cops a Photo Op
Tue Oct 25 2016 People's Block Party Supplants Oakland Police "Copaganda" Effort, Saves Home

Word got out that the Oakland Police Department had intentions to do neighborhood outreach in West Oakland on October 18. Knowing that OPD holds public relations events such as these to whitewash their earned reputation as racist, violent, and corrupt, the Anti Police-Terror Project set out to prevent OPD from exploiting local residents for a propagandistic photo op.

Oakland police planned their "copaganda" event for 3pm at 24th and Linden streets, so the Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP) beat them to it by arriving a little after 1:30pm. As tents, a children's play area, and a barbecue were being set up for a community block party, folks noticed a tow truck a few houses up the street preparing to make off with a parked recreational vehicle while a civilian Oakland police technician supervised.

Just as the tow truck began to drive away with a man's home, several people rushed in front of the truck, preventing it from leaving. About an hour later, after plenty of back and forth with police, it was agreed that the tow truck would release the RV and the owner would be afforded time to take care of legal requirements for a non-operational vehicle.

More to story than Christopher Young allegedly distributing child porn, ex-Jefferson Parish president's brother argues
DEC 26, 2016 - 2:25 PM (3)

The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, headed by Commissioner Troy Hebert, right, and Louisiana State Police, headed by Superintendent Col. Michael D. Edmonson, left, announce the details of a monthlong undercover operation named 'Operation Trick or Treat' naming five strip clubs as having allegedly been locations of acts of prostitution, illegal drug use, and lewd or improper acts in front of the Louisiana Supreme Court Building in the French Quarter in New Orleans, La. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015.
Joe Gyan

Six months after alleging that federal child porn charges against him are the result of a "selective and vindictive" prosecution, the war of words between Baton Rouge lawyer and former state liquor lobbyist Christopher Young and prosecutors rages on in court filings.

Young, the brother of former Jefferson Parish President John Young, claims the only reason he's being prosecuted in U.S. District Court in Baton Rouge is because he refused to cooperate with federal authorities in a public corruption probe.

Federal prosecutors counter that nothing could be further from the truth. The truth, they say, is that a Baton Rouge federal grand jury indicted Christopher Young in May on possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography charges because he forwarded videos of boys engaging in sex acts with donkeys to friends, family, clients and others

U.S. District Judge John deGravelles held hearings in September and October on Young's motion to dismiss the federal charges but hasn't issued a ruling.

In court documents filed since the hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cam Le and René Salomon insist there's "no improper motive" behind the prosecution of Young.

Man claims FBI 'extorted' him on sex charge in swap for dirt on ex-ATC chief Troy Hebert
Young's attorneys — Billy Gibbens, Marci Blaize and Taylor Townsend — beg to differ and say federal authorities were interested in Young only because of his lobbying activities before the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control and his relationship with former ATC Commissioner Troy Hebert.

"Rhetoric aside, Young knows that he is being prosecuted because he engaged in illegal child sexual exploitation by repeatedly distributing, over a two-year period of time, graphic child pornography bestiality videos to his friends, family, clients and colleagues," the prosecutors argue in asking deGravelles to deny Young's motion.

Just because Young claims he had no lustful interest when he distributed and possessed the videos doesn't mean he should be shielded from federal prosecution, the government attorneys add.

Le and Salomon note that the investigation arose out of an unsolicited referral from a local lawyer to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"Subsequent forensic analysis revealed that Young … distributed child pornography bestiality videos, on 33 separate occasions, to 38 different individuals," the prosecutors state.

Young's attorneys argue that what began as a child porn investigation quickly morphed into a public corruption probe when the federal government learned of Young's lobbying activities and his friendship with Hebert.

"It took a child pornography case that it normally would not have prosecuted and used it to try to force Mr. Young to become a government agent in a fishing expedition for public corruption," his lawyers contend.

Not true, according to Le and Salomon, who say Young's decision not to cooperate with law enforcement "was not the motivation for the Government's decision to seek an indictment."

"Defendants regularly reject plea agreements; there is no evidence that Young's choice to do so here made prosecutors retaliate against him," the prosecutors argue.

Young testified in deGravelles' courtroom in September that FBI agent Maurice Hattier Jr. told him that "whatever is on that phone doesn't have to become public if you cooperate with us in a public corruption investigation."

Hattier also testified and denied making that statement to Youn

Timeline of BART Police Killings and Militarization
Sun Nov 20 2016 Center for Convivial Research and Autonomy Documents BART Police Violence

A timeline mapping Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police violence and militarization was collectively generated as part of a larger ongoing convivial research effort to expose low intensity war across the Bay Area and state. The timeline was produced through a collaboration between the Center for Convivial Research and Autonomy (CCRA) and Carville Annex Press as part of the struggle for Justice for James "Nate" Greer.

The timeline is a tool that remembers, counts, mourns and honors our dead. It is a collaborative effort of documentation over time that makes visible the many resistances that have refused erasure. This refusal itself is a confrontation against state violence. The timeline reflects our insurgent and organized community across the Bay Area and in its detail is reflected the work and tears and blood of many over time.

Construction of the BART system in the 1960s notoriously cut through Black and Brown communities across the San Francisco Bay Area, disrupting vibrant social life and vernacular circuits of activity. It forced the relocation of Black and Brown families, businesses, and civic institutions often creating competition between the two. When BART began running in 1972 it already had a state sanctioned police force and by 1976 BART police exercised full police powers across all 52 California counties.

New article showing lack of evidence for healthcare workers' flu
shots/ PLOS
The issue of healthcare worker (HCW) flu vaccine mandates is of
particular interest because no one has shown the shots help patients.
Healthcare workers have had to accept many vaccines, including that
for Hepatitis B, for decades.  But flu vaccination mandates are
particularly egregious.

The flu shot is given yearly.  It does not prevent flu infections or
flu deaths in patients.  And the more often you get a flu shot, the
less well it works.  It may reduce absenteeism, but only by a small
amount-- because the effectiveness of the shots is low.  Effectiveness
is estimated at 37%, averaging CDC data on effectiveness over the past
12 years.  Per the Cochrane Collaboration, you need to vaccinate 71
people to prevent one case of clinical flu.  (I have added all these
citations to earlier posts.)

The experts at CDC, FDA, NIH and their parent DHHS know this.  We all
read the same literature, and they hold and attend conferences where
this is discussed. The federal govt paid for some of the research.

So why does the federal government insist on pushing these shots? Why
must healthcare workers get them, or in many cases, be fired?  Some
thoughts:

1.  Who controls healthcare? Healthcare workers (HCWs) must be trained
to march in lockstep with what their anointed health agencies tell
them, irrespective of the science. Loyalty must be to government and
employer, rather than to professional standards. Doctors may no longer
interpret the medical literature for themselves. Hospital
administrators have happily issued draconian edicts and fired disloyal
employees, increasing their power in the process.

2.  Once doctors and healthcare workers have been pacified, the rest
of the adult population, like the pediatric population, can be made to
take whatever vaccines the government designates.

3.  Autonomy is to be chipped away.  We are not to be in control of
our own bodies; rather, the government is, for the good of the
community.  Will mandated drugging be next?

4.  While the flu shot program is being sold using the powerful memes
of patient protection and Science, everyone who has looked into the
science knows neither is true. But (as in George Orwell's 1984) it is
the memes we must bow down to, not the science.

Anyway, the new PLOS study concluded, as have others:
The impression that unvaccinated HCWs place their patients at great
influenza peril is exaggerated. Instead, the HCW-attributable risk and
vaccine-preventable fraction both remain unknown and the NNV (number
needed to vaccinate) to achieve patient benefit still requires better
understanding. Although current scientific data are inadequate to
support the ethical implementation of enforced HCW influenza
vaccination, they do not refute approaches to support voluntary
vaccination or other more broadly protective practices, such as
staying home or masking when acutely ill.
I believe the last sentence is  directed at healthcare administrators,
who a) demand unvaccinated staff wear face masks throughout flu season
(totally stupid since you can't spread flu when you don't have it--but
then, that is not why the mask edict was issued) and b) make it very
difficult for HCWs to stay home when they are sick.

Federal Authorities Detain, Search Phone of NASA Scientest

Sidd Bikkannavar, who works at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and is a natural-born U.S. citizen, was detained while trying to reenter the United States just as the President Trump’s controversial immigration ban took effect.

But it didn’t stop there. He said Border Patrol agents confiscated his NASA-issued phone, which could include sensitive information, Gizmodo reports.

Bikkannavar posted about the incident on Facebook:

Sorry for the absence. On my way home to the US last weekend, I was detained by Homeland Security and held with others who were stranded under the Muslim ban. CBP officers seized my phone and wouldn’t release me until I gave my access PIN for them to copy the data. I initially refused, since it’s a JPL-issued phone (Jet Propulsion Lab property) and I must protect access. Just to be clear – I’m a US-born citizen and NASA engineer, traveling with a valid US passport. Once they took both my phone and the access PIN, they returned me to the holding area with the cots and other sleeping detainees until they finished copying my data.

I’m back home, and JPL has been running forensics on the phone to determine what CBP/Homeland Security might have taken, or whether they installed anything on the device. I’ve also been working with JPL legal counsel. I removed my Facebook page until I was sure this account wasn’t also compromised by the intrusion into my phone and connected apps. I hope no one was worried. JPL issued me a new phone and new phone number, which I’ll give out soon.

High schoolers to get FBI training in Fort Smith

When a high school guidance counselor asks a student what career path he or she is interested in, some will say "firefighter" or "astronaut," "pilot" or "journalist." But for the select few who might say "FBI field agent," there's a program designed specifically for them.

The Little Rock field office of the FBI will host its third annual Future Agents In Training course. The program spans three days — April 21 and 28 and May 5 — and is open to high school students ages 16-19.

"This is one of our many youth outreach programs," said Special Agent Ryan Kennedy of the Little Rock field office. "It gives them an idea, a high-level overview, of the FBI."

For the third year, it will be held in Fort Smith, and if previous years are any indication, it will be the launching point for expanding the program

Mike Edmonson should resign after State Police troopers' Vegas trip, U.S. Sen. John Kennedy says
FEB 24, 2017 - 5:19 P

U.S. Sen. John Kennedy on Friday called for the resignation of Col. Mike Edmonson, the Louisiana State Police superintendent, amid an investigation into a questionable road trip taken last year by four state troopers who took a costly detour to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon as they drove to a law enforcement conference in California.

The troopers charged suites at a resort and casino to state taxpayers, and three of them were paid for dozens of hours of overtime while driving across the country in October to attend the annual conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police in San Diego.

The head of the State Police's Internal Affairs Division, Maj. Derrell Williams, was among the four troopers, who drove a state SUV nearly 4,000 miles during the trip.

Story Continued Below

Kennedy, the longtime state treasurer until he was elected to the Senate last year, accused Edmonson of squandering taxpayer dollars at a time when the state has faced repeated fiscal challenges, including a more than $300 million budget shortfall that recently prompted a special legislative session.

"I like the superintendent," Kennedy said in an interview with WVUE-TV. "But he has demonstrated that he is intent on being the tallest hog at the trough. And this is all taxpayer money."

Besides the money spent on the four troopers' road trip, Kennedy criticized Edmonson for sending 17 members of his agency to a conference at which Edmonson was presented a lifetime achievement award.

FBI Jokes About Seeing Hillary In Handcuffs

9:55 AM 02/22/2017

FBI agents in the New York field office were rumored to have joked about seeing former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in handcuffs, Vanity Fair reports.

A former Department of Justice official told Vanity Fair a segment of the New York field office had a high a level of animosity towards Clinton. “It was widely understood that there was a faction in that office that couldn’t stand her and was out to get her,” he continued to Bethany McLean.

McLean elaborated that the level of acrimony towards Clinton in the New York field office may have been so high, FBI Director James Comey placed the bulk of the Clinton investigation in Washington, D.C.

The anecdote fits with widespread reports of internal FBI dissatisfaction with the July 2016 decision not to prosecute Clinton for illegally using a private email server to conduct official State Department business

NYPD cop busted for public masturbation is a serial offender

Robert Francis, an off-duty NYPD detective, was busted on Saturday for the perverted acts.
An off-duty NYPD detective busted for peering into women’s windows and pleasuring himself is a serial perv who has committed the sick act many times, police in Long Island said Monday.

Rockville Police Department Commissioner Charles Gennario detailed the two-month investigation that led to Det. Robert Francis, 46, being charged with four counts public lewdness.

Rockville detectives received three separate reports beginning Feb. 5 about a man who would get the attention of a woman by shining a light in her window. He’d then begin fondling himself. When the woman ran to get help, the perverted suspect would flee the scen

Dennis Kucinich: FBI Director Must Recuse Himself from Russia Investigation

FBI Director James Comey

By Former Congressman Dennis Kucinich
Fox News

FBI Director James Comey should recuse himself from all further investigations into the 2016 presidential campaign and its aftermath.

Here’s why:

On Oct. 28, Comey announced the discovery of new Clinton emails, creating a media firestorm that tilted the election toward Donald Trump.

This week, testifying before the House Intelligence Committee, Comey confirmed a report leaked to the media last summer that the FBI was investigating allegations of a connection between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Comey could have shared his concerns about both campaigns before the November election, and let the public decide. He did not.

If it was appropriate to withhold information about an investigation into the Trump campaign in July, he should have applied that same logic to the Clinton campaign in October. Hillary Clinton, charged not with a crime but by innuendo, paid the price at the polls. She was convicted in the court of public opinion.

Comey’s announcement this week that the FBI was investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government made national and world headlines and rocked the White House.

But why now? Why not eight months ago? Has new, substantive information been brought forward? Was there even a real investigation in July? Or did an insider leak a story to the FBI back then for political purposes?

Someone on the House or Senate Judiciary Committee should ask for the FBI agents’ time sheets over the past eight months to see if the Bureau was actually investigating, or whether this is another case of abuse of process — using an alleged investigation to smear a candidate.

From Canada to Siberia, Permafrost Thaw Produces ‘Hell’s Mouth’ Craters, Sinking Lands, and 7,000 Methane Pockets Waiting to Blow
In places like Canada and Siberia, a memory of ice ages long past is locked away in the very soil. There, dig about three feet down, and you’ll encounter a layer of frozen earth running from 200 feet to almost a mile deep in some places. It’s like a great glacier secreted away underground and covering about 19 million square kilometers of the Northern Hemisphere. We call this frozen ground permafrost.

An Enormous Pile of Sequestered Carbon

Permafrost generally forms in regions where the mean annual temperature is below zero degrees Celsius. And the presently large expanse of permafrost has formed over the past 2-3 million years in which long, cold ice ages and short, and somewhat warmer interglacial periods have dominated.

(Recent research indicates that up to 120 billion tons of carbon could release from thawing permafrost this Century due to the warming that is now being caused by human fossil fuel burning. Such a release would roughly equate to 12 years of present fossil fuel burning adding approximately 40 ppm of CO2 equivalent gasses to the Earth’s Atmosphere [adding about 0.4 C to medium term warming and 0.8 C to long term warming]. The risk posed by this additional carbon feedback coming from the Earth System highlights the need to halt fossil fuel burning as swiftly as possible. Image source: The Impact of Permafrost Carbon Feedback on Global Climate.)

Locked away in all that permafrost is a massive store of carbon. Including peat, methane and methane hydrates, permafrost is estimated to have sequestered some 1,400 to 1,700 billion tons of a material that, if released as gas, could considerably contribute to the volume of heat trapping substances (like CO2 and CH4) already held aloft in the Earth’s atmosphere in a process that scientists call an amplifying climate feedback.

Evidence of Thaw and a Building Carbon Feedback

But now, human fossil fuel burning is causing the Arctic to rapidly warm — at about 3 times faster than the rate of warming for the rest of the globe (0.6 C per decade in the Arctic). And with atmospheric CO2 concentrations presently above 400 parts per million (and CO2e concentrations above 490 parts per million), the world is now starting to thaw out of the icy period of the last 2-3 million years. As a result, the permafrost is melting.

(Thermokarst lakes near Hudson Bay. Image source: Commons.)

When permafrost melts it changes the land around it. Often times, land subsides and deforms as the icy permafrost below collapses when it thaws. The resulting underground cavities can also telegraph to the surface in the form of sink holes. In places where microbes or hydrates are present, the cavities can fill with gas — which can sometimes erupt in a methane blow hole or ‘hell’s mouth’ crater. In Canada, a new study recently discovered that 52,000 square miles of northwestern permafrost is already thawing. The thaw is producing large sink holes, causing coastlines to rapidly erode, and proliferating the round ponds known as thermokarst lakes.

But it’s not just Canada that’s feeling the thaw. In Siberia, warming is also eating away at the permafrost. And what is happening there is arguably on a much grander and more disturbing scale than what we presently see in Canada. In East Siberia, for example, a 100 meter deep, 1 kilometer long crater has formed in the sagging Permafrost. It is officially called the Batagaika crater. But the locals know it as the Gateway to the Underworld. The crater began as a small deformation during the 1960s when permafrost thaw in the region initiated. It has, over the decades, grown considerably larger — with the growth rate accelerating along with permafrost melt during recent years.

(Time lapse of Batagaika Crater expansion from 1984 to 2016 as provided by Google’s Earth Engine.)

Further west, the Yamal region of Russia is seeing strange bulges dispersing across the land. The bulges, according to Russian scientists and to reports in the Siberian Times, are being caused by bubbles of methane gas beneath the surface. The scientists state that these formations are likely being triggered by warming — in which either methane hydrates trapped within the permafrost are thawing or where microbes have come in contact with thawed permafrost carbon to break it down and produce methane. And in recent years, this region of Arctic Siberia has seen some very warm temperatures — with readings hitting as high as 35 C (95 F) during the summer of 2016.

These same researchers now note that some 7,000 underground methane bubbles exist in this region and that warming is pushing them to erupt. When the pressure below the land surface reaches a critical point, the Siberian Times report suggests that the land above can be displaced — bursting outward. The Siberian Times went on to note that large holes forming in the Yamal region during 2014 and 2015 were caused by just this kind of methane eruption.

(The Yamal Crater was one of the first indications that methane pockets forming beneath the Siberian Tundra were starting to erupt due to human-forced warming. Image source: The Siberian Times.)

Touchy Subject Scientifically and Politically

Permafrost thaw producing high volumes of feedback carbon release can be a touchy subject in the sciences and politically. The reason is that rational responses to this threat moves decision points forward on human carbon emissions cuts and it adds to the concern that atmospheric carbon capture will be needed later this century and on through many centuries to follow in order to prevent a scenario in which carbon feedbacks cause a form of warming runaway.

It doesn’t help that the science on permafrost carbon feedback is also new and rife with uncertainty — generating a kind of gray area in which rumors and misinformation can multiply. And there also appears to be some indication that the fossil fuel industry is attempting to use the issue to push gas extraction and burning in the Arctic — falsely claiming that all of the gas is going to release anyway. Which is not true — a portion of the permafrost carbon and related methane would remain sequestered even as human extraction efforts, if they continued indefinitely, would ultimately result in the release of a much larger portion of this carbon to the atmosphere than mere feedbacks alone.

It is worth noting that presently accepted science indicates that the present rate of atmospheric carbon release due to fossil fuel burning is likely many times that of the potential annual carbon release coming from the permafrost even under the worst case warming scenarios. And because that realized rate of permafrost carbon release is directly tied to how much fossil fuel we ultimately burn, we should be very clear that the urgency to cut these emissions couldn’t be higher.

Here's what Jimmy Breslin wrote about Donald Trump decades ago
Updated: Monday, March 20, 2017, 2:55 PM

Jimmy Breslin took a look at one of New York’s biggest characters, Donald Trump, and saw a chump.

The legendary columnist, who died Sunday, was an original champion of the working class, using his space in the Daily News and other papers to spotlight heroes and villains for ordinary New Yorkers.

And many years before Trump’s unprecedented rise to the presidency, Breslin summed up the fellow Queens boy as an enemy of the people.

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Breslin saw through Trump’s worst instincts — his bullying and bragging, his cheapskate scams, his abuses of the press and the public — while most metro media marveled at the real estate mogul as a symbol of success.

Legendary Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin dead at 88
One of Breslin’s earliest mentions of Trump avoided even using the name that would soon be screamed from front pages and skyscrapers worldwide.

In a 1982 Daily News column, Breslin brushed past “a young builder named Junior with a Big Ego,” who had recently made a famous but fruitless bid to buy the newspaper.

“His civic responsibility in the past consisted of getting tax abatements,” Breslin mused about the man who would become a daily fixture in the city’s tabloids.

Jimmy Breslin died Sunday at 88.
In a series of Newsday columns years later, which the paper republished Sunday, Breslin unleashed harsh truths about Trump that have only gained more currency since the tycoon took the White House.

Jimmy Breslin to join N.Y. Journalism Hall of Fame
“Trump, in the crinkling of an eye, senses better than anyone the insecurity of people, that nobody knows whether anything is good or bad until they are told, and he is quite willing to tell them immediately,” Breslin wrote in a 1988 column about Trump’s purchase of an airline, which turned out to be one of his biggest business failures.

Breslin saw Trump as a Queens guy running “crap games” while a hungry public admired him for “t

Three activists could face one year in prison for protesting — or simply laughing — at a confirmation hearing for Jeff Sessions.
Members of the Code Pink activist group were convicted Wednesday of federal charges for disrupting the January hearing for the man who is now U.S. Attorney General.
One of the convicts, Desiree Fairooz, was arrested after laughing at the hearing.

Digital Privacy Group Challenges "Hacking" Warrant in Child Porn ...

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will argue in court today that the warrant used by the FBI in the now infamous “Playpen” child pornography case was unconstitutional. EFF — an organization dedicated to preserving digital liberty — is concerned about the precedent this case will set if the warrant is allowed to stand.
As The New American reported in a previous article, the case stems from a two-week period in 2015 when the FBI operated a child pornography website and used the traffic to that website to inject malware to the computers of visitors to the site:
The case goes back to 2015 when the FBI operated a child pornography website for two weeks. Yes, you read that right. From February 20 to March 4, 2015, the FBI ran a website with more than 23,000 actual pictures and videos of children being sexually abused, including more than 9,000 of which could be downloaded by visitors to the site. According to court records, some of those children were almost too young to be in kindergarten.
It began when the FBI discovered the location of the server for the so-called Playpen website, which was accessible only via the Tor network. The FBI raided the location, arrested the operator, and made the decision to leave the website up and running and allow visitors to the site to continue downloading images and videos. The FBI’s reasoning (if it can rightly be called that) was that federal agents had the ability to inject malware into the server that would work its way back to the users’ computers, defeating Tor’s anonymity all along the way. The FBI tracked the site’s visitors and later made more than 135 arrests including “a pediatrician, a math teacher, a professor, a public school administrator, a preschool teacher, a former bank executive and a federal drug enforcement agent,” according to a report from deepdotweb.com. Somehow, in the darkened mind of the FBI, the arrests justified spending two weeks peddling child pornography. And this is at least the third time the FBI has done this type of thing.
But then, this is the same FBI that helped the NSA give us Fast and Furious.
In the two years since the FBI made the arrests in the “Playpen” case, those cases have been making their way through the courts. There have been a variety of legal challenges, but now EFF will argue before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston, Massachusetts, today that the FBI’s decision to use “a single, general warrant to authorize its massive hacking operation” amounts to “violating the Fourth Amendment,” according to a press release by the Internet privacy group.

Of course, it is easy to misinterpret the actions of groups such as EFF in a case such as this one. But lest it appear that EFF is defending child pornographers, that is not the only (or even the main) issue he

Carr: FBI’s James Comey invents a novel defense for crooks

The prisons have always been full of innocent men — just ask them during visiting hours.

But from now on the lockups will teem with a new class of jailbird — those who didn’t know they were committing crimes.

In case you missed it, FBI Director James “J. Edgar” Comey, in his latest attempt to broom the high crimes and misdemeanors of Crooked Hillary Clinton, told a Senate committee this week that even though Hillary, her top aide Huma Abedin et al. had undoubtedly committed all sorts of felonies, it was impossible to prosecute them.

“With respect to Ms. Abedin in particular,” J. Edgar Comey said, “we didn’t have any indication that she had a sense that what she was doing was in violation of the law.”

Really?

We always understood that the Clintons were trafficking in huge numbers of classified government emails that were illegally sent or deleted — for example, she destroyed at least 33,000 under federal subpoena, that we know of.

But Comey upped the ante more than somewhat this week, saying that Huma had sent “hundreds of thousands of emails, some of which contained classified information” — to her blackmailable husband, the pervert ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner, who once allegedly sexted with an underage teenage girl using the alias “Carlos Danger.”

What could possibly go wrong with this scenario?

Hundreds of thousands of illegal emails! And these are just the ones that J. Edgar admitted knowing about. If they were all just about yoga schedules and Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, as Hillary claimed, then why did she feel the need to destroy them with Bleach Bit?

Last July, at his first public whitewashing of the massive scandal, J. Edgar Comey copped to the fact that it’s a felony to handle classified information with “gross negligence.” But there was no “gross negligence” on Hillary’s part, he claimed.

She was just “extremely careless,” he stammered on, which is very different from “gross negligence.”

Think of the possibilities that are now open to the defense bar. This could be a bigger boon to the element than Miranda warnings, or Annie Dookhan. How can any perp now be charged with, say, robbing a bank? The guy in the mask can just explain that he thought he was making an “unauthorized withdrawal” from the FDIC-insured institution.

Judge sentences three law enforcement officer defendants in Iberia Parish civil rights case

Thursday
Posted May 4, 2017 at 12:20 PM

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter, of the Western District of Louisiana, issued prison sentences for three former officials of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office (IPSO), including a former Lieutenant Colonel, for abuses of inmates, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander Van Hook of the Western District of Louisiana and Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey S. Sallet of the FBI’s New Orleans Division.

MORE VIDEO:
New Llano Fire Chief Kevin Yates, giving a statement on Wednesday evening at Nona Lisa Apartments.

Former Lt. Col. Gerald Savoy was sentenced to serve 87 months in prison. Wesley Hayes, the former Warden of the Iberia Parish Jail, was sentenced to serve 34 months. And Hayes’ brother Jesse, a former Assistant Warden at the jail, was sentenced to serve 24 months.

The convictions of these three defendants, and seven others who were sentenced in February, stemmed from several incidents of abuse at the Iberia Parish Jail (IPJ) in 2011.

During the course of an expansive investigation, 10 former IPSO officials pleaded guilty to federal criminal civil rights violations. During their guilty plea hearings, the officials admitted to various incidents in which deputies willfully assaulted inmates, without legal justification for doing so. One of those incidents, including the incident to which Savoy and the Hayes brothers pled guilty, involved the abuse of a pretrial detainee in September 2011.

A second incident to which numerous deputies pled guilty, occurred at the IPJ on April 29, 2011, when five pretrial detainees were taken into a chapel at the jail and were beaten by sheriff’s deputies.

The seven other defendants, who were sentenced previously for their roles in these civil rights offenses, are former Lt. Bret Broussard of the Narcotics Unit, who was sentenced to 54 months in prison; former narcotics agent Wade Bergeron, who was sentenced to 48 months in prison; former narcotics agent Jason Comeaux, who was sentenced to 40 months in prison; former narcotics agent David Hines, who was sentenced to 40 months in prison; former narcotics agent Byron Benjamin Lassalle, who was sentenced to 54 months in prison; and former K-9 handlers Robert Burns and Jeremy Hatley, who were sentenced to six months in prison and 36 months in prison respectively.

An additional deputy, former Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mark Frederick has been indicted and is pending trial at a later date. An indictment is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt.

The FBI Agents Association on Saturday backed former lawmaker and FBI agent Mike Rogers to replace ousted FBI Director James Comey.

FBIAA President Thomas F. O’Connor said in a statement that Rogers, a former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, "exemplifies the principles that should be possessed by the next FBI Director."

Former FBI agent Mike Rogers Tries To Make The Case That Glenn Greenwald Should Be Prosecuted For 'Selling Stolen Material'
from the is-he-insane? dept
Rep. Mike Rogers apparently just can't help but spin wild and ridiculous conspiracy theories. Fresh off his latest attempt to argue that Ed Snowden is a Russian spy -- an argument debunked by just about everyone, including his Senatorial counterpart Dianne Feinstein -- it appears he's now decided to pick up the ridiculously insane thread kicked off (purposefully) last week by Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, hinting that journalists who reported on Ed Snowden are somehow "accomplices" who can be prosecuted.

During a House Intelligence Committee in which many members (from both parties) angrily criticized the intelligence community, Rogers continued to do everything possible to defend them, including pushing the bogus argument that Glenn Greenwald "sold stolen goods" in questions to FBI director James Comey:
REP. ROGERS: You -- there have been discussions about selling of access to this material to both newspaper outlets and other places. Mr. Comey, to the best of your knowledge, is fencing stolen material -- is that a crime?
DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY: Yes, it is.
REP. ROGERS: And would be selling the access of classified material that is stolen from the United States government -- would that be a crime?
DIR. COMEY: It would be. It’s an issue that can be complicated if it involves a news-gathering and news promulgation function, but in general, fencing or selling stolen property is a crime.
REP. ROGERS: So if I’m a newspaper reporter for -- fill in the blank -- and I sell stolen material, is that legal because I’m a newspaper reporter?
DIR. COMEY: Right, if you’re a newspaper report and you’re hocking stolen jewelry, it’s still a crime.
REP. ROGERS: And if I’m hocking stolen classified material that I’m not legally in possession of for personal gain and profit, is that not a crime?
DIR. COMEY: I think that’s a harder question because it involves a news-gathering functions -- could have First Amendment implications. It’s something that probably would be better answered by the Department of Justice.
REP. ROGERS: So entering into a commercial enterprise to sell stolen material is acceptable to a legitimate news organization?
DIR. COMEY: I’m not sure I’m able to answer that question in the abstract.
REP. ROGERS: It’s something we ought to think about, is it not?
DIR. COMEY: Certainly.
REP. ROGERS: And so if there are accomplices in purveying stolen information, shouldn’t we be concerned about that?
DIR. COMEY: We should be concerned about all the facts surrounding the theft of classified information and its promulgation.
REP. ROGERS: Hmm. And interesting that over the -- again, the Munich Conference, where we had individuals tell us that in fact there are individuals who are saying to be in possession of this information who are eager to sell this information to other news organizations, would that be a legitimate exercise on behalf of a reporter?
DIR. COMEY: That’s a question -- now you’re getting from the general to the particular. I don’t want to talk about the case in particular because it’s an active investigation of ours.
REP. ROGERS: It’s an active investigation for accomplices brokering in stolen information?
DIR. COMEY: We are looking at the totality of the circumstances around the theft and promulgation.
Glenn Greenwald is not named, but that's clearly who they are targeting. A few folks have brought up the ridiculous charges of him "selling" the Snowden leaks to news organizations, but that's clearly bullshit. Greenwald has been doing freelance journalism work for a while. Publications pay him in the same way they pay any freelancer. He's not selling any documents at all -- and in fact has shared many of the documents with multiple publications for their own reporting activities.

It's pretty clear that Rogers is continuing his desperate, despicable and downright McCarthy-like arguments in an attempt to create chilling effects and to protect his friends in the intelligence community. You'd think that someone who is supposed to uphold the Constitution would respect the freedom of the press, but Rogers seems to be actively trying to stifle it -- just like his staff did to me last year, when they lied about me and told reporters that they could sue me for defamation.

Rogers has shown time and time again that he's little more than a lumbering bully who will do pretty much anything to protect his friends in the intelligence community, even if that means trampling all over the Constitution. Rogers can push these claims as much as he wants. I think it's unlikely that the DOJ would go anywhere near charging a reporter with "selling stolen goods" in a case like this, because they know that argument would almost certainly fail. That means the only reason Rogers is doing this is to try to scare off people with bluster and threats. Thankfully, most of the people that's targeted at actually understand the law and the Constitution, and take such threats as clear suggestions that they're on the right track. It all makes you wonder, just what does Mike Rogers want to keep hidden so badly?

Scientist Formerly Accused of Spying Sues Alleging FBI Agent Falsified Evidence

An FBI special agent knowingly made false statements and kept evidence from federal prosecutors who brought — but later dropped — charges against a Chinese-American physics professor accused of spying, a recent lawsuit alleges.

Xiaoxing Xi, 59, argues in papers filed in federal court Wednesday that lead case agent Andrew Haugen told prosecutors Xi's dealings with colleagues in China were "for a sinister and illicit purpose," even though Haugen allegedly knew they were "legitimate normal academic collaborations."

An indictment handed up in May 2015 by a federal grand jury in Pennsylvania accused Xi of sharing information with counterparts in China about a pocket heater, which Xi bought in 2004 for use in his superconductor research, court papers said.

He was charged with four counts of wire fraud in what prosecutors said was an effort to help the Chinese become "world leaders of the superconductivity field."

But the government dropped its case in September 2015 after Xi and his attorney gave a presentation to investigators a month earlier, according to court papers.

RELATED: Feds Will Not File New Espionage Charges Against Physics Professor

According to Xi's lawsuit, the only thing the physics department's interim chair at Temple University in Philadelphia discussed in emails with those colleagues was technology he himself had invented and published — not the pocket heater.

And that, the suit contends, was a fact Haugen knew before Xi was ever indicted.

"It was obvious to anyone who looked carefully that Professor Xi had not sent any information about the technology that he was charged with unlawfully sharing," one of his attorneys, Jonathan Feinberg, told NBC News.

An excerpt of a lawsuit by Xiaoxing Xi alleging that an FBI special agent falsely informed federal prosecutors that Xi was a "technological spy for China."
The FBI declined to comment on the lawsuit citing pending litigation. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A naturalized citizen born in China, Xi is among several Chinese-American scientists who in recent years have had federal criminal indictments dismissed before heading to trial.

Last May, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, among others, called on the Justice Department to investigate whether race, ethnicity, or national origin played a role in bringing espionage charges against Asian Americans, including Xi and hydrologist Xiafen (Sherry) Chen.

RELATED: Petition Demands Apology for Chinese-American Scientists Previously Accused of Spying

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Los Angeles said in a statement Wednesday that it supported Xi's lawsuit, calling his prosecution unjust.

"In reality, the federal government had sought to criminalize Professor Xi for routine academic research that was not secret or unlawful in any way," the statement reads.

Xi's arrest came in the early morning hours of May 21, 2015, while at home with his family, court papers said. Not fully dressed, Xi answered the door after hearing loud, urgent knocks. Awaiting him on the other side were armed federal agents, some with a battering ram, court documents said.

Xi's wife and two daughters, the youngest age 12 at the time, were held at gunpoint as a handcuffed Xi was led away, his lawsuit claims.

Agents at the FBI's Philadelphia field office fingerprinted Xi, took his mugshot, and made him give a DNA sample, court papers said. Xi was also interrogated for two hours, allegedly being told the reason for his arrest only after the questioning ended, his suit said.

The U.S. Marshals Service, which took custody of Xi, ordered him to strip naked and performed a visual body cavity search, according to court papers.

Xi was released after posting $100,000 in bond, though a judge required that he turn over his passport and restricted his travel to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, his lawsuit said.

He was told he faced up to 80 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted, according to court papers.

The four-count indictment alleged that Xi violated an agreement he had signed in 2006 with a company claiming ownership of the pocket heater he had bought two years earlier. Xi promised in that document not to "reproduce, sell, transfer or otherwise distribute" the device "to any third party," his lawsuit said.

That was a condition for Xi to lease and use the pocket heater in his research for a 12-month period, according to court documents.

The physical components of that particular device were not trade secrets or protected by federal law from being disclosed, the court filing said.

The wire fraud charges were based on emails in 2010 between Xi and colleagues in China. But, as Xi maintains, details of the pocket heater were never brought up in those electronic communications.

"They addressed completely different devices — in fact, devices that professor Xi had himself invented, which had nothing to do with the STI pocket heater," Feinberg said.

That was among the evidence Xi and his attorney presented to prosecutors, who ultimately dismissed the charges on Sept. 18, 2015, court filings said.

Xi's lawsuit accuses Haugen of making a number of false statements that led to what Xi calls a malicious prosecution. Among them, that Xi sent diagrams and photographs of the pocket heater to colleagues at universities in China, and that Xi bought the device with the intent of violating the non-disclosure agreement he had signed.

The lawsuit claims Xi's equal protection and due process rights were violated, and that he was subjected to unlawful search and seizure. He is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages as well as attorneys' fees.

Xi has since returned to work at Temple University, Feinberg said. He added that Xi was never told what caused the government to be suspicious of his conduct in the first place.

"There's no question that these charges left a very, very distressing impression upon him," Feinberg said. "He is constantly watching his back, concerned that someone may misinterpret his normal academic collaborations."

Additional defendants could be tacked on to the lawsuit if it's discovered that other agents were involved, Feinberg said.

The FBI itself was not named in the complaint since the agency can not be sued under federal law, he noted.

But Feinberg added, "At some point, it is likely that we will bring claims against the United States under the Federal Tort Claims Act. That's an issue that we'll be addressing in the weeks and months

Former FBI Director James Comey spotted at musical in first public outing since being fired

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Sunday, May 14, 2017, 6:09 PM

Former FBI Director James Comey made his first public appearance since getting fired by President Trump by attending a musical on Saturday.

Comey and his wife, Patrice, enjoyed the matinee performance of “Fun Home” — a musical about a lesbian cartoonist who explores her sexuality and struggles with the suicide of her gay father – at the National Theater in Washington, D.C. The coming-of-age musical won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015.

Barbara Whitman, one of the show’s lead producers, told The New York Times that the Comeys purchased tickets some time ago.

The show had such an impact on the Comeys that “they were wiping away the tears as they came backstage to meet the cast,” Whitman told the Times.

DISTURBING CLAIM – FBI INTERROGATED FORMER SENATOR FOR WANTING “28 PAGES” DECLASSIFIED
Published: May 9, 2016

While extremely disturbing, I can’t say the following is particularly surprising.
Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) is criticizing the Obama administration as having tried to strong-arm a former senator who is pushing to declassify 28 pages of the 9/11 report dealing with Saudi Arabia.

He recounted how Rep. Gwen Graham (D-Fla.) and her father, former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham (D-Fla.), were detained by the FBI in 2011 at Dulles International Airport outside Washington. The message from the agents, according to the Grahams, was to quit pushing for declassification of the 28 pages.

The FBI “took a former senator, a former governor, grabbed him in an airport, hustled him into a room with armed force to try to intimidate him into taking different positions on issues of public policy and important national policy, and the fact that he wasn’t intimidated because he was calm doesn’t show that they weren’t trying to intimidate him,” Sherman said in an interview with The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper.
This actually makes perfect sense. As I highlighted in last year’s post, The New York Post Reports – FBI is Covering Up Saudi Links to 9/11 Attack:

Former Democratic Sen. Bob Graham, who in 2002 chaired the congressional Joint Inquiry into 9/11, maintains the FBI is covering up a Saudi support cell in Sarasota for the hijackers. He says the al-Hijjis’ “urgent” pre-9/11 exit suggests “someone may have tipped them off” about the coming attacks.

Graham has been working with a 14-member group in Congress to urge President Obama to declassify 28 pages of the final report of his inquiry which were originally redacted, wholesale, by President George W. Bush.

“The 28 pages primarily relate to who financed 9/11, and they point a very strong finger at Saudi Arabia as being the principal financier,” he said, adding, “I am speaking of the kingdom,” or government, of Saudi Arabia, not just wealthy individual Saudi donors.

Sources who have read the censored Saudi section say it cites CIA and FBI case files that directly implicate officials of the Saudi Embassy in Washington and its consulate in Los Angeles in the attacks — which, if true, would make 9/11 not just an act of terrorism, but an act of war by a foreign government.

Schumer raises possibility of stalling Trump's FBI nominee

WASHINGTON -- The Senate's top Democrat is raising the possibility his party may try to stall President Trump's FBI nominee until his administration agrees to have a special prosecutor investigate Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

Senator Schumer covers up murder by FBI agents at WACO

Fanning the Flames of Waco

September 8, 1999
On April 19, 1993, 26 children were killed at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas. Six years and one day later, 12 children were killed at Columbine High School. The Columbine murderers are dead, and the man who illegally supplied them a gun is facing a lengthy prison sentence. But those responsible for the deaths of the children at Waco remain at large.
If, as President Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno claim, the federal government bears no responsibility for the deaths of the children at Waco, why has the federal government worked so hard, and with so much success until recently, to falsify the facts about what happened there?

The lies about how the fire started commenced while the building was still in flames. A Justice Department spokesman in Washington claimed that an FBI sniper using a rifle scope had seen a male Branch Davidian, wearing black Ninja-style clothes and a black hood, pour liquid on the floor behind a piano and then ignite it. The day after the fire, Jeffrey Jamar, the FBI’s special agent in charge at Waco, asserted that the agent saw a person “get down with cupped hands and then there was a flash of fire.”

At the criminal trial of the Branch Davidians in 1994, that story fell apart. FBI Special Agent Jack Morrison said that he could see, through a hole created by a tank, somebody bent or kneeling by an overturned piano. The man appeared to be washing his hands, although the sniper admitted on cross-examination that he could not see the man’s hands. The fire did not erupt while the man was in the sniper’s sight, though the sniper did see a fire shortly thereafter. However, pictures of the progress of the fire show that the area near the overturned piano (the front door) was not a starting point for any fire. No fire appears there until several minutes after the sniper’s observation. Photographs show no fire in that area while much of the rest of the building was in flames.

Attorney General Reno earned a congratulatory phone call from President Clinton the day after the fire because of her highly publicized acceptance of responsibility. She put the FBI in charge of investigating its own conduct at Waco. The resulting report was a sham and a cover-up. Although seven independent reviewers were appointed to examine the FBI report, the FBI withheld evidence from them, such as Branch Davidian leader David Koresh’s April 14 offer to surrender as soon as he completed his written interpretation of the Seven Seals from the Book of Revelation.

Today, Reno claims to be angry that the FBI has been caught lying about Waco for the last six years. This brings to mind Claude Rains’s line from Casablanca, “I’m shocked … shocked to find that gambling is going on in here.”

The FBI lied to Janet Reno right from the start: they told her that CS chemical warfare agent is a mild irritant, even though much smaller doses than were used at Waco have killed children. On the day of the assault, the FBI flagrantly ignored her prior order to back off if there was any danger to the children. When she had initially rejected the FBI’s plan for a tank and chemical warfare assault on the Branch Davidians, the FBI told her that “Koresh was beating the babies.” In fact, FBI listening devices revealed no such thing.

Now Attorney General Reno’s response to new revelations about FBI lies is to order another FBI investigation of the FBI.

It is undisputed that while the FBI tanks were conducting the chemical warfare assault, the Branch Davidians spread kerosene in the building, intending to light it if the tanks entered the building. Starting a massive conflagration would have been consistent with Koresh’s apocalyptic interpretation of the Bible.

However, if federal agents bear no responsibility for the start of the fire and for the deaths of 76 people, why has the FBI covered up so much evidence for so long?

Recent revelations show that the FBI did fire pyrotechnic grenades — fully capable of starting a fire — during the attack on the Branch Davidian home. The FBI now claims that those grenades were launched six hours before the fire began. Yet if this “innocent” explanation is true, why did the FBI not tell the truth from the beginning?

Even if one takes the current FBI explanation at face value, it shows the federal government’s horrible disregard for the children. Although CS chemical warfare agent is banned from international warfare by a treaty that the United States has signed, the FBI used it against children and babies, knowing that those innocents would be unprotected by gas masks, since their faces were too small to fit them.

After the fire, the FBI bemoaned the failure of the Branch Davidians to take refuge in the underground tornado shelter, where the air remained cool and fresh. Yet the FBI now admits that the pyrotechnic grenades were launched at the very beginning of the assault as part of a systematic plan to keep anyone from fleeing to the shelter.

The federal Posse Comitatus Act forbids the use of the military for civilian law enforcement. Yet the Dallas Morning News reports that the U.S. Army’s Delta Force was “present, up front and close” on April 19, 1993. That revelation undermines earlier claims that only three Delta Force soldiers were at Waco in an “advisory” capacity.

The government claims that the FBI never fired a single shot at Waco, yet an FBI aerial film appears to show the distinctive pattern of machine gun fire coming from government posts at the rear of the Branch Davidian compound — on the one side of the building that television cameras could not see. Could it be that Delta Force, and not the FBI, was doing the shooting — making claims that the FBI did not fire a single shot literally true?

Congressional leaders are beginning new hearings on Waco. However, the 1995 Waco hearings were a disaster, with Republicans looking for administration appointees to blame and paying little attention to the malfeasance of career federal agents. Meanwhile, Democrats such as then-Rep. Charles Schumer succeeded in diverting attention away from crimes committed by government employees and toward the statutory rapes that David Koresh had perpetrated earlier. To his credit, Schumer, now a senator, was the first major Democrat to call for a new review of Waco.

If another round of hearings is to have any chance for success, it will be essential to have a small committee, to allow congressional staff to question witnesses, and not to impose time limits on how long a given witness may be questioned.

Even now, it is unclear who killed the children of Waco. More than ever, though, the recent unveiling of more FBI lies underscores the fact that the children died because of willful and knowing actions by our federal law enforcement professionals. Although the president shed crocodile tears over the 12 children at Columbine High School and now seeks partisan advantage by pushing for federal laws that could not possibly have prevented Columbine, he and his administration remain coldly indifferent to the 26 children at Waco. The day after the Waco fire, Clinton said, “I do not think the United States government is responsible for the fact that a bunch of religious fanatics decided to kill themselves.” But the children didn’t kill themselves. If the president and his attorney general really care about those 26 children, they will appoint outside investigators — not the FBI — to bring out the truth about what really happened on April 19, 1993.

Osama Bin Laden’s son ‘bent on avenging father’s death’ – ex-FBI agent

Osama Bin Laden’s son is set to become the new leader of Al-Qaeda and wants to exact revenge for his father’s death, according to an ex-FBI agent, who led the investigation into the terrorist group following the 9/11 attacks.

In an interview to be aired on CBS on Sunday, former agent Ali Soufan claims that letters seized in the raid in which Bin Laden was killed in 2011 indicate that his son will follow in his footsteps.

Osama Bin Laden Created by the US

. 'Bin Laden is a product of the U.S. spy agencies, according to an article in the Tribune de Genve by Richard Labviire, writer of the book Les dollars de la terreur, les etats Unis et les islamistes.

The first contact with Bin Laden was in 1979, when the new graduate from the Univ. of Jedah got in touch with the U.S. embassy in Ankara, Turkey. With the help of the CIA and the U.S. Armed Forces intelligence services he began to organize in the early 1980s and network to raise money and to recruit fighters for the Afghan mujahidins that were fighting the Soviets. He did this from the city of Peshawar in Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan.

Part of these activities were financed with the production and sale of morphine, the base of heroin. This was the beginning of today Al Qaida (the base) network led by Bin Laden. Indeed the chickens are coming home to roost for the CIA and U.S. bosses.

LONDON [IANS]: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) worked in tandem with Pakistan to create the "monster" that is today Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, a leading US expert on South Asia said here.

"I warned them that we were creating a monster," Selig Harrison from the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars said at the conference here last week on "Terrorism and Regional Security: Managing the Challenges in Asia."

Harrison said: "The CIA made a historic mistake in encouraging Islamic groups from all over the world to come to Afghanistan." The US provided $3 billion for building up these Islamic groups, and it accepted Pakistan's demand that they should decide how this money should be spent, Harrison said.

Harrison, who spoke before the Taliban assault on the Buddha statues was launched, told the gathering of security experts that he had meetings with CIA leaders at the time when Islamic forces were being strengthened in Afghanistan. "They told me these people were fanatical, and the more fierce they were the more fiercely they would fight the Soviets," he said. "I warned them that we were creating a monster."

Harrison, who has written five books on Asian affairs and US relations with Asia, has had extensive contact with the CIA and political leaders in South Asia. Harrison was a senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace between 1974 and 1996.

Harrison who is now senior fellow with The Century Foundation recalled a conversation he had with the late Gen Zia-ul Haq of Pakistan. "Gen Zia spoke to me about expanding Pakistan's sphere of influence to control Afghanistan, then Uzbekistan and Tajikstan and then Iran and Turkey," Harrison said. That design continues, he said. Gen.Mohammed Aziz who was involved in that Zia plan has been elevated now to a key position by Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, Harrison said.

The old associations between the intelligence agencies continue, Harrison said. "The CIA still has close links with the ISI (Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence)."

Today that money and those weapons have helped build up the Taliban, Harrison said. "The Taliban are not just recruits from 'madrassas' (Muslim theological schools) but are on the payroll of the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence, the intelligence wing of the Pakistani government)." The Taliban are now "making a living out of terrorism."

Harrison said the UN Security Council resolution number 1333 calls for an embargo on arms to the Taliban. "But it is a resolution without teeth because it does not provide sanctions for non-compliance," he said. "The US is not backing the Russians who want to give more teeth to the resolution."

Now it is Pakistan that "holds the key to the future of Afghanistan," Harrison said. The creation of the Taliban was central to Pakistan's "pan-Islamic vision," Harrison said. It came after "the CIA made the historic mistake of encouraging Islamic groups from all over the world to come to Afghanistan," he said. The creation of the Taliban had been "actively encouraged by the ISI and the CIA," he said. "Pakistan has been building up Afghan collaborators who will sustain Pakistan," he said. (IANS)

Anatomy of a Victory: CIA's Covert Afghan War

By: Steve Coll, Washington Post, July 19, 1992

"In all, the United States funneled more than $ 2 billion in guns and money to the mujaheddin during the 1980s, according to U.S. officials. It was the largest covert action program since World War II."

A specially equipped C-141 Starlifter transport carrying William Casey touched down at a military air base south of Islamabad in October 1984 for a secret visit by the CIA director to plan strategy for the war against Soviet forces in Afghanistan.

Helicopters lifted Casey to three secret training camps near the Afghan border, where he watched mujaheddin rebels fire heavy weapons and learn to make bombs with CIA-supplied plastic explosives and detonators.

During the visit, Casey startled his Pakistani hosts by proposing that they take the Afghan war into enemy territory -- into the Soviet Union itself.

Casey wanted to ship subversive propaganda through Afghanistan to the Soviet Union's predominantly Muslim southern republics. The Pakistanis agreed, and the CIA soon supplied thousands of Korans, as well as books on Soviet atrocities in Uzbekistan and tracts on historical heroes of Uzbek nationalism, according to Pakistani and Western officials.

"We can do a lot of damage to the Soviet Union," Casey said, according to Mohammed Yousaf, a Pakistani general who attended the meeting.

Casey's visit was a prelude to a secret Reagan administration decision in March 1985, reflected in National Security Decision Directive 166, to sharply escalate U.S. covert action in Afghanistan, according to Western officials.

Abandoning a policy of simple harassment of Soviet occupiers, the Reagan team decided secretly to let loose on the Afghan battlefield an array of U.S. high technology and military expertise in an effort to hit and demoralize Soviet commanders and soldiers. Casey saw it as a prime opportunity to strike at an overextended, potentially vulnerable Soviet empire.

Eight years after Casey's visit to Pakistan, the Soviet Union is no more. Afghanistan has fallen to the heavily armed, fraticidal mujaheddin rebels.

The Afghans themselves did the fighting and dying -- and ultimately won their war against the Soviets -- and not all of them laud the CIA's role in their victory. But even some sharp critics of the CIA agree that in military terms, its secret 1985 escalation of covert support to the mujaheddin made a major difference in Afghanistan, the last battlefield of the long Cold War.

How the Reagan administration decided to go for victory in the Afghan war between 1984 and 1988 has been shrouded in secrecy and clouded by the sharply divergent political agendas of those involved. But with the triumph of the mujaheddin rebels over Afghanistan's leftist government in April and the demise of the Soviet Union, some intelligence officials involved have decided to reveal how the covert escalation was carried out.

The most prominent of these former intelligence officers is Yousaf, the Pakistani general who supervised the covert war between 1983 and 1987 and who last month published in Europe and Pakistan a detailed account of his role and that of the CIA, titled "The Bear Trap."

This article and another to follow are based on extensive interviews with Yousaf as well as with more than a dozen senior Western officials who confirmed Yousaf's disclosures and elaborated on them.

U.S. officials worried about what might happen if aspects of their stepped-up covert action were exposed -- or if the program succeeded too well and provoked the Soviets to react in hot anger. The escalation that began in 1985 "was directed at killing Russian military officers," one Western official said. "That caused a lot of nervousness."

One source of jitters was that Pakistani intelligence officers -- partly inspired by Casey -- began independently to train Afghans and funnel CIA supplies for scattered strikes against military installations, factories and storage depots within Soviet territory.

The attacks later alarmed U.S. officials in Washington, who saw military raids on Soviet territory as "an incredible escalation," according to Graham Fuller, then a senior U.S. intelligence official who counseled against any such raids. Fearing a large-scale Soviet response and the fallout of such attacks on U.S.-Soviet diplomacy, the Reagan administration blocked the transfer to Pakistan of detailed satellite photographs of military targets inside the Soviet Union, other U.S. officials said.

To Yousaf, who managed the Koran-smuggling program and the guerrilla raids inside Soviet territory, the United States ultimately "chickened out" on the question of taking the secret Afghan war onto Soviet soil. Nonetheless, Yousaf recalled, Casey was "ruthless in his approach, and he had a built-in hatred for the Soviets."

An intelligence coup in 1984 and 1985 triggered the Reagan administration's decision to escalate the covert progam in Afghanistan, according to Western officials. The United States received highly specific, sensitive information about Kremlin politics and new Soviet war plans in Afghanistan. Already under pressure from Congress and conservative activists to expand its support to the mujaheddin, the Reagan administration moved in response to this intelligence to open up its high-technology arsenal to aid the Afghan rebels.

Beginning in 1985, the CIA supplied mujaheddin rebels with extensive satellite reconnaissance data of Soviet targets on the Afghan battlefield, plans for military operations based on the satellite intelligence, intercepts of Soviet communications, secret communications networks for the rebels, delayed timing devices for tons of C-4 plastic explosives for urban sabotage and sophisticated guerrilla attacks, long-range sniper rifles, a targeting device for mortars that was linked to a U.S. Navy satellite, wire-guided anti-tank missiles, and other equipment.

The move to upgrade aid to the mujaheddin roughly coincided with the well-known decision in 1986 to provide the mujaheddin with sophisticated, U.S.-made Stinger antiaircraft missiles. Before the missiles arrived, however, those involved in the covert war wrestled with a wide-ranging and at times divisive debate over how far they should go in challenging the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

Roots of the Rebellion In 1980, not long after Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan to prop up a sympathetic leftist government, President Jimmy Carter signed the first -- and for many years the only -- presidential "finding" on Afghanistan, the classified directive required by U.S. law to begin covert operations, according to several Western sources familiar with the Carter document.

The Carter finding sought to aid Afghan rebels in "harassment" of Soviet occupying forces in Afghanistan through secret supplies of light weapons and other assistance. The finding did not talk of driving Soviet forces out of Afghanistan or defeating them militarily, goals few considered possible at the time, these sources said.

The cornerstone of the program was that the United States, through the CIA, would provide funds, some weapons and general supervision of support for the mujaheddin rebels, but day-to-day operations and direct contact with the mujaheddin would be left to the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence agency, or ISI. The hands-off U.S. role contrasted with CIA operations in Nicaragua and Angola.

Saudi Arabia agreed to match U.S. financial contributions to the mujaheddin and distributed funds directly to ISI. China sold weapons to the CIA and donated a smaller number directly to Pakistan, but the extent of China's role has been one of the secret war's most closely guarded secrets.

In all, the United States funneled more than $ 2 billion in guns and money to the mujaheddin during the 1980s, according to U.S. officials. It was the largest covert action program since World War II.

In the first years after the Reagan administration inherited the Carter program, the covert Afghan war "tended to be handled out of Casey's back pocket," recalled Ronald Spiers, a former U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, the base of the Afghan rebels. Mainly from China's government, the CIA purchased assault rifles, grenade launchers, mines and SA-7 light antiaircraft weapons, and then arranged for shipment to Pakistan. Most of the weapons dated to the Korean War or earlier. The amounts were significant -- 10,000 tons of arms and ammunition in 1983, according to Yousaf -- but a fraction of what they would be in just a few years.

Beginning in 1984, Soviet forces in Afghanistan began to experiment with new and more aggressive tactics against the mujaheddin, based on the use of Soviet special forces, called the Spetsnaz, in helicopter-borne assaults on Afghan rebel supply lines. As these tactics succeeded, Soviet commanders pursued them increasingly, to the point where some U.S. congressmen who traveled with the mujaheddin -- including Rep. Charles Wilson (D-Tex.) and Sen. Gordon Humphrey (R-N.H.) -- believed that the war might turn against the rebels.

The new Soviet tactics reflected a perception in the Kremlin that the Red Army was in danger of becoming bogged down in Afghanistan and needed to take decisive steps to win the war, according to sensitive intelligence that reached the Reagan administration in 1984 and 1985, Western officials said. The intelligence came from the upper reaches of the Soviet Defense Ministry and indicated that Soviet hard-liners were pushing a plan to attempt to win the Afghan war within two years, sources said.

The new war plan was to be implemented by Gen. Mikhail Zaitsev, who was transferred from the prestigious command of Soviet forces in Germany to run the Soviet war in Afghanistan in the spring of 1985, just as Mikhail Gorbachev was battling hard-line rivals to take power in a Kremlin succession struggle. Cracking the Kremlin's Strategy

The intelligence about Soviet war plans in Afghanistan was highly specific, according to Western sources. The Soviets intended to deploy one-third of their total Spetsnaz forces in Afghanistan -- nearly 2,000 "highly trained and motivated" paratroops, according to Yousaf.

In addition, the Soviets intended to dispatch a stronger KGB presence to assist the special forces and regular troops, and they intended to deploy some of the Soviet Union's most sophisticated battlefield communications equipment, referred to by some as the "Omsk vans" -- mobile, integrated communications centers that would permit interception of mujaheddin battlefield communications and rapid, coordinated aerial attacks on rebel targets, such as the kind that were demoralizing the rebels by 1984.

At the Pentagon, U.S. military officers pored over the intelligence, considering plans to thwart the Soviet escalation, officials said. The answers they came up with, said a Western official, were to provide "secure communications [for the Afghan rebels], kill the gunships and the fighter cover, better routes for [mujaheddin] infiltration, and get to work on [Soviet] targets" in Afghanistan, including the Omsk vans, through the use of satellite reconnaissance and increased, specialized guerrilla training.

"There was a demand from my friends [in the CIA] to capture a vehicle intact with this sort of communications," recalled Yousaf, referring to the newly introduced mobile Soviet facilities. Unfortunately, despite much effort, Yousaf said, "we never succeeded in that."

"Spetsnaz was key," said Vincent Cannistraro, a CIA operations officer who was posted at the time as director of intelligence programs at the National Security Council. Not only did communications improve, but the Spetsnaz forces were willing to fight aggressively and at night. The problem, Cannistraro said, was that as the Soviets moved to escalate, the U.S. aid was "just enough to get a very brave people killed" because it encouraged the mujaheddin to fight but did not provide them with the means to win.

Conservatives in the Reagan administration and especially in Congress saw the CIA as part of the problem. Humphrey, the former senator and a leading conservative supporter of the mujaheddin, found the CIA "really, really reluctant" to increase the quality of support for the Afghan rebels to meet Soviet escalation. For their part, CIA officers felt the war was not going as badly as some skeptics thought, and they worried that it might not be possible to preserve secrecy in the midst of a major escalation. A sympathetic U.S. official said the agency's key decision-makers "did not question the wisdom" of the escalation, but were "simply careful."

In March 1985, President Reagan signed National Security Decision Directive 166, and national security adviser Robert D. McFarlane signed an extensive annex, augmenting the original Carter intelligence finding that focused on "harassment" of Soviet occupying forces, according to several sources. Although it covered diplomatic and humanitarian objectives as well, the new, detailed Reagan directive used bold language to authorize stepped-up covert military aid to the mujaheddin, and it made clear that the secret Afghan war had a new goal: to defeat Soviet troops in Afghanistan through covert action and encourage a Soviet withdrawal.

New Covert U.S. Aid The new covert U.S. assistance began with a dramatic increase in arms supplies -- a steady rise to 65,000 tons annually by 1987, according to Yousaf -- as well as what he called a "ceaseless stream" of CIA and Pentagon specialists who traveled to the secret headquarters of Pakistan's ISI on the main road near Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

There the CIA specialists met with Pakistani intelligence officers to help plan operations for the Afghan rebels. At any one time during the Afghan fighting season, as many as 11 ISI teams trained and supplied by the CIA accompanied the mujaheddin across the border to supervise attacks, according to Yousaf and Western sources. The teams attacked airports, railroads, fuel depots, electricity pylons, bridges and roads, the sources said.

CIA and Pentagon specialists offered detailed satellite photographs and ink maps of Soviet targets around Afghanistan. The CIA station chief in Islamabad ferried U.S. intercepts of Soviet battlefield communications.

Other CIA specialists and military officers supplied secure communications gear and trained Pakistani instructors on how to use it. Experts on psychological warfare brought propaganda and books. Demolitions experts gave instructions on the explosives needed to destroy key targets such as bridges, tunnels and fuel depots. They also supplied chemical and electronic timing devices and remote control switches for delayed bombs and rockets that could be shot without a mujaheddin rebel present at the firing site.

The new efforts focused on strategic targets such as the Termez Bridge between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union. "We got the information like current speed of the water, current depth of the water, the width of the pillars, which would be the best way to demolish," Yousaf said. In Washington, CIA lawyers debated whether it was legal to blow up pylons on the Soviet side of the bridge as opposed to the Afghan side, in keeping with the decision not to support military action across the Soviet border, a Western official said.

Despite several attempts, Afghan rebels trained in the new program never brought the Termez Bridge down, though they did damage and destroy other targets, such as pipelines and depots, in the sensitive border area, Western and Pakistani sources said.

The most valuable intelligence provided by the Americans was the satellite reconnaissance, Yousaf said. Soon the wall of Yousaf's office was covered with detailed maps of Soviet targets in Afghanistan such as airfields, armories and military buildings. The maps came with CIA assessments of how best to approach the target, possible routes of withdrawal, and analysis of how Soviet troops might respond to an attack. "They would say there are the vehicles, and there is the [river bank], and there is the tank," Yousaf said.

CIA operations officers helped Pakistani trainers establish schools for the mujaheddin in secure communications, guerrilla warfare, urban sabotage and heavy weapons, Yousaf and Western officials said.

The first antiaircraft systems used by the mujaheddin were the Swiss-made Oerlikon heavy gun and the British-made Blowpipe missile, according to Yousaf and Western sources. When these proved ineffective, the United States sent the Stinger. Pakistani officers traveled to the United States for training on the Stinger in June 1986 and then set up a secret mujaheddin Stinger training facility in Rawalpindi, complete with an electronic simulator made in the United States. The simulator allowed mujaheddin trainees to aim and fire at a large screen without actually shooting off expensive missiles, Yousaf said. The screen marked the missile's track and calculated whether the trainee would have hit his airborne target.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of such training and battlefield intelligence depended on the mujaheddin themselves; their performance and willingness to employ disciplined tactics varied greatly. Yousaf considered the aid highly valuable, although persistently marred by supplies of weapons such as the Blowpipe that failed miserably on the battlefield.

At the least, the escalation on the U.S. side initiated with Reagan's 1985 National Security Directive helped to change the character of the Afghan war, intensifying the struggle and raising the stakes for both sides. This change led U.S. officials to confront a difficult question that had legal, military, foreign policy and even moral implications: In taking the Afghan covert operation more directly to the Soviet enemy, how far should the United States be prepared to go?

FBI Insider Reveals Why Jason Chaffetz Is Being Forced Out Of Politics
May 1, 2017
Jason Chaffetz is retiring from politics because the Rothschild's threatened his children's lives, according to an FBI insider.

Jason Chaffetz is retiring from politics because elite Democrats, working on behalf of the financial industrial complex also known as the Rothschild’s central banking scam, threatened his children’s lives, according to an FBI insider.

Chaffetz effectively ended his career as an uncompromised politician when he pushed through the bill to audit the Federal Reserve, the FBI insider explains.

“You don’t go after the Fed. Nobody goes after the Federal Reserve and gets away with it.”

In March Chaffetz was credited with doing “the impossible” and pushing a bill through Congress ordering an audit of the Federal Reserve.

PROOF: ROBERT MUELLER CANNOT BE IMPARTIAL IN THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION

MUELLER'S DEEP STATE RELATIONSHIPS WILL POLITICIZE THE FBI YET AGAIN
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS | OPINION | AMERICANS FOR INNOVATION | MAY 18, 2016, UPDATED MAY 22, 2017 | PDF

FIG. 1 – ROBERT S. MUELLER. FBI director for 12 years from 2001 to 2013 under George Bush (Republican) and Barack Obama (Democrat). His 2011 financial disclosure revealed investments in two hedge funds with assets held in 55 other hedge funds valued at $106.2 billion. One third of those funds are headquartered in the Cayman Islands. Mueller did not disclose the components of those exclusive, invitation-only funds as financial disclosure ethics law requires. A director of one of his funds, Mellon Optima L/S Strategy Fund, LLC, is Harvard Professor Benjamin M. Friedman. Friedman was chair of Lawrence "Larry" H. Summers' dissertation committee. This relationship to Summers is a massive conflict of interest since banks in which Mueller is invested were beneficiaries of the 2008 TARP bank bailout that Summers directed. None of those bankers has ever been prosecuted for the toxic mortgage criminality.

ROSENSTEIN SCANDAL: HIS WIFE, LISA H. BARSOOMIAN, REPRESENTED BILL CLINTON IN 1998—COURT RECORDS MISSING—ETHICS RULES REQUIRED HIS RECUSAL
Rod J. Rosenstein's has no business being involved at all in the Hillary Clinton/DNC-triggered Russia investigation, much less the selection of his mentor Robert S. Mueller, III as special counsel. This is because Rosenstein's wife, Lisa H.Barsoomian (no photo available), represented Bill Clinton in 1998 with her boss, R. Craig Lawrence (6,459 cases, 321 pgs. 10 MB) . Lawrence has represented Mueller (3 times), Comey (5 times), Obama (45 times), Kathleen Sebellius (56 times), Bill (40 times) and Hillary (17 times) between 1991-2017. Barsoomian's loyalties are clearly tainted. Such "pillow talk" biases (it is obviously more than that) are imputed to Rosenstein under the "appearance of impropriety" lawyer rules. They clearly owe their U.S. Attorney careers to Comey, Mueller and the Clintons.
JUDICIAL CORRUPTION ALERT! All Barsoomian court documents for her Clinton representation in Hamburg v. Clinton 98-cv-01459-TPJ (DC District Court) and its appeal Hamburg, Al v. Clinton, William J., Case No. 99-5053 (DC Circuit Court) have been removed from the D.C. District and Appeals Court dockets.

NEWS UPDATE! MAY 20, 2017
FALSE FLAG ALERT! ROSENSTEIN & DEEP STATE SENT MUELLER BACK TO DESTROY EVIDENCE OF THE 9/11 INSIDE JOB?

Rod J. Rosenstein, Deputy Attorney General, chose his mentor and fellow former U.S. Attorney Robert S. Mueller to lead the Russian investigation based on breathless MSM vaguaries. Rosenstein is yet another Harvard Law insider—the most popular law school for the sedition of the Deep State.
Robert S. Mueller, III became FBI Director on Sep. 04, 2001. Tellingly, he stepped out of the spotlight twelve years later, just months after NSA director James Clapper lied to Congress about NSA surveillance on Mar. 12, 2013, and Edward Snowden's disclosure of that PRISM program on Jun. 06, 2013. Snowden also revealed the profound collusion among Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo, AT&T, Verizon, Skype, Apple, AOL, Instagram, WhatsApp, Flickr, Tumblr, YouTube, Google+, Reddit and hundreds of others with this rogue C.I.A. / NSA group. These men, women and companies have a lot to hide. So far, they have all, including Mueller, Comey and Rosenstein, escaped accountability.

Mueller knew that Clapper lied to Congress, and yet he did not investigate him. He failed the American people. This material omission alone disqualifies him and proves his evident culpability. His silence is criminal. No one could be FBI director and not have condoned the illegal surveillance activity. His predecessor J. Edgar Hoover used salacious illegal surveillance to blackmail his opponents. Likewise, Mueller has been doing the same thing for the Deep State, according to many whistleblowers. Mueller is not credible, despite ignorant, complicit or blackmailed politicians who say his "reputation for integrity and honesty is above reproach." Mueller also did not investigate Silicon Valley and Wall Street's collusion with Clapper either. And yet, Mueller made sure his net worth increased dramatically from $1.8 million (2001) to up to $7.0 million (2011) in ten years while pulling down his FBI salary. See previous post.

MUELLER, ROSENSTEIN, COMEY AND DEEP STATE NEED TO DESTROY 9/11 EVIDENCE

Numerous whistleblowers, like former FBI superstar Agent In Charge Ted L. Gunderson, say that 9/11 was an "inside job." They say 9/11 was fabricated to scare Americans into The Patriot Act—as the pretext for dubious new laws and executive orders allowing the state to seize property and privacy. In other words, their plan was to undermine The Bill of Rights. Gunderson called them a "rogue outfit" and "a covert military criminal government enterprise."

The return of Mueller begs the question: "What's their real goal?" Knowledgeable insiders all say there is no evidence to support the allegations—including civil libertarian Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz—and yet, the MSM pumps out breathless calls for impeachment hourly!

LISA BARSOOMIAN: FOIA OBSTRUCTER IN CHIEF
Rosenstein is married to Lisa Barsoomian. Barsoomian represented the FBI against Judicial Watch and many other FOIA requesters to block disclosure requests.

See Judicial Watch v. FBI, 01-cv-00248-RMU among her 165 cases as U.S. Attorney (with Mueller, Comey & Rosenstein).

She even represented the C.I.A. in opposing FOIA requesters.
So, what are Mueller and the Deep State up to? What activity are they hiding behind this smokescreen? Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein could have picked anybody, and yet he picked his old colleague—the man with 9/11 blood on his hands. In fact, since Mueller, Rosenstein and Comey were all close U.S. Attorney colleagues inside the intelligence apparatus, the 9/11 Deep State inside job and cover-up could bring them all down. Now, that is understandable motive to appoint Mueller.

Readers are encouraged to study the 2001 TIMELINE closely. (Please be patient to let the timeline load, it will then take you automatically to the 2001 bookmark.) The collusion within the intelligence community is obvious when seen in context. Mueller was appointed director of the FBI just seven days before 9/11, which C.I.A. whistleblower Susan Lindauer said was a widely known plan inside the agency from at least Apr. 2001—at least six months earlier.

Mueller knew about 9/11. He and his FBI / C.I.A. colleagues allowed it to happen. They even aided the "terrorists" with training, manpower, materiel and intelligence. It is now public that Mohammed Atta was a C.I.A. asset (ref. Abel Danger—the Wikipedia write up is an evident cover-up given all the whistleblower testimony). Lindauer and other whistleblowers say the FBI also provided the explosives for the first World Trade Center bombing. Mueller failed to prosecute a single complicit insider. In fact, Gunderson said the FBI and C.I.A. have been behind every major false flag act of terror since Clinton when globalist new world order operatives inside the US government began to consolidate power via technology and the Internet (ref. Jun. 07, 1993 FBI encryption backdoor key conference). To cover up for the Deep State, Mueller helped persecute whistleblowers.

Mueller's appointment is an insult to common sense and decency. It is also a flagrant breach of ethics laws. He deserves jail, or worse, in our opinion, not a microphone. No doubt the FBI shredders are busy this weekend. Spread the word.

ORIGINAL POST
(MAY 18, 2016)—It is a huge surprise that former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III has been chosen to lead the FBI Russia investigation, because there seem to be direct ties between him and the Deep State.
MUELLER IS INVESTED IN 20 CLINTON / OBAMA CORPORATE FUNDERS
This is a remarkable decision since Mueller holds financial investments in twelve (12) investors/donors to Bill & Hillary Clinton and eight (8) members of Barack Obama’s technology inner circle who supported Hillary for President. See Obama’s Technology CEO Council and Obama’s Silicon Valley Dinner (After you click on the link, please be patient for timeline to download and go to the bookmarks).
Mueller investments in Clinton / Obama political collaborators: AT&T, Autodesk, Bank of America, Cisco, IBM, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, NetApp, Qualcomm, State Street, Vanguard, Wells Fargo.
MUELLER INVESTED IN UNTRACEABLE FUNDS IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS
One can hardly imagine a more biased individual to run the Russia investigation. In addition, Mueller has two financial holdings of specialized hedge funds (Mellon Optima L/S Strategy Fd LLC and Defenders Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund LLC where they manage $106.2 billion with secretive reporting rules) with 36% headquartered in the Cayman Islands where HSBC, whose directors included former FBI Director Comey, managed money laundering operations. Mueller's Harvard political economy professor Benjamin M. Friedman was a director in the dubious Mellon fund.
For a full analysis of Mueller’s financial relationships, see our previous post: Betrayal: Former FBI director [Robert S. Mueller] colluded with Cartel offshore money laundering havens (AFI, Mar. 25, 2016).
Acting FBI Director Rod Rosenstein, yet another Harvard Law insider, appears to have either: (a) thrown his new boss, Donald Trump, under the bus in one of Rosenstein's first official acts, or (b) expects Mueller to hang himself in this very public arena.
Rosenstein’s appointment raises the question as to whether Deep State operatives like him and former Goldman Sachs executives, like Steve Mnuchin, can change their allegiances once they have been so tightly enmeshed in the Deep State’s secret society of drugs, sex, pedophilia and blackmail. See FBI Agent In Charge Ted L. Gunderson statement.
MUELLER AND ROSENSTEIN HAVE BEEN DEEP STATE LAW COLLEAGUES FOR DECADES
Rosenstein has worked closely with Mueller at the Justice Department since 1990. Both Rosenstein and Mueller worked with then Assistant Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. during the Bush presidency.
MUELLER FAILED TO PROSECUTE OBVIOUS CRIMINALITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEEP STATE TAKEOVER
During their Justice Department employment, numerous major scandals were not prosecuted like the 9/11 cover-up, NSA warrantless surveillance of Americans, encryption backdoor for the C.I.A. and FBI in 1993, the seditious 2008 bank "bailout" raid of the Federal Reserve and TARP, theft of social networking invention by the Deep State, energy stimulus, Obamacare robbing of Fannie and Freddie, The Clinton Foundation pay-to-play, Clinton Haiti fraud, global pedophilia rings, IRS political targeting of the Tea Party, BLM land redistribution, America Invents Act, Fast and Furious, Hillary email scandal, etc.
Given Rosenstein’s decades of ties to the Deep State, one wonders why President Donald Trump appointed him. The Deep State is now engaged in brazen acts of treason apparently to bring down Donald Trump’s duly-elected administration. For example, GQ news commenter Keith Olbermann just called for foreign intelligence agencies to help the Deep State bring down Mr. Trump’s administration—the definition of sedition.
HOW CAN MUELLER BE IMPARTIAL?
ONE WOULD EXPECT MUELLER WILL POLITICIZE THE FBI INVESTIGATION, YET AGAIN.
In conclusion, the facts are unavoidable. Robert S. Mueller has substantial conflicts of interest and should recuse himself as Special Counsel, before the public demands he be fired.
The temptation for Mueller to politicize this investigation to benefit his Deep State handlers seems just too high.
Why is the President of the United States being investigated when the Clintons, Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner are still at large and most certainly should have had a special prosecutor investigating them? And, what about all those calls for special counsel to look into Justice Scalia’s wiretapping and suspicious death.
The irony is, the Clinton matters were then FBI Director Mueller’s decisions to make, and he refused. What does that tell you?

Ex-FBI internal affairs chief pleads guilty
WASHINGTON (AP) — The former chief internal watchdog at the FBI has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl and has admitted he had a history of molesting other children before he joined the bureau for a two-decade career.
John H. Conditt Jr., 53, who retired in 2001, was sentenced last Friday to 12 years in prison in Tarrant County court in Fort Worth, after he admitted he molested the daughter of two FBI agents after he retired. He acknowledged molesting at least two other girls before his law enforcement career, his lawyer said.
Conditt sought treatment for sex offenders after his arrest last year, said his attorney, Toby Goldsmith.
"The problem these people have is they don't really feel like it is their fault," Goldsmith said. "The treatment doesn't work unless you admit you are the one who instigated it, and he did that."
Conditt headed the internal affairs unit that investigates agent wrongdoing for the Office of Professional Responsibility at FBI headquarters in Washington from 1999 until his retirement in June 2001, the FBI said. He wrote articles in law enforcement journals on how police agencies could effectively investigate their own conduct.
FBI officials said Tuesday they had no information to suggest that Conditt had any problems during his career and he was never the subject of an investigation.
Goldsmith said he was concerned about the safety of his client in prison given that he is a former FBI agent and an admitted child molester. "He's not going to be comfortable in the penitentiary," the lawyer said.
Goldsmith said his client had admitted that he had molested at least two other girls before he became an FBI agent more than 30 years ago, but that there was no evidence of any wrongdoing while he served in the bureau.
"It seems that he never did because he had stricter control at that time," the lawyer said.
Conditt could have faced life in prison, and prosecutors requested he get 50 years. The judge sentenced him to 12 years in prison, in part citing Conditt's decision to spare the victim the trauma of a trial, Goldsmith said.
Conditt's conviction is the latest controversy to strike the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility.
Last year, FBI Director Robert Mueller transferred the head of the office to another supervisory assignment outside Washington, three months after rebuking him for his conduct toward a whistleblower.
That whistleblower, John Roberts, alleged the FBI disciplinary office had a double standard that let supervisors off easier than line agents.
Those allegations prompted investigations by Congress and the Justice Department inspector general. The latter concluded there wa

Study says Justice Department-led police reform efforts may reduce civil rights lawsuits

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A study from a Texas university says the federal intervention with local police departments favored by President Barack Obama's Justice Department -- and the ones likely to be phased out with the election of Donald Trump -- may lead to a reduction in civil rights lawsuits against a city.
The study released Monday looked at the number of civil cases filed in 23 jurisdictions between 1990 and 2013. All of the jurisdictions had law enforcement agencies enter into consent decrees with the Justice Department.
It says such court-mandated reforms "may contribute to a modest reduction in the probability of (civil rights) filings occurring." It says intervention could lead to as much as a 43 percent reduction in civil-rights lawsuits after the Justice Department intervenes.

Robert Mueller Is Like ‘Batman’ Capable of Saving America, Former Colleague Says

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has an unblemished reputation as an investigator with integrity and will conduct a thorough investigation of Trump’s campaign and Russia without regard for politics, his former second-in-charge said Sunday.
“A line in New York would be Batman’s back to save Gotham, but I think in this case, Batman is back to save America,” Timothy Murphy told John Catsimatidis during an interview on “The Cats Roundtable.”

Robert Mueller is getting rave reviews from bi-partisans in Washington, DC. As the longest serving FBI agent ever, other than the J. Edgar Hoover he is well connected to the DC political establishment. He is closely connected to both parties serving under George W. Bush and Barak Obama. He worked under James Comey when Comey was a deputy attorney general in DOJ and reportedly the two our friends.
The reality is that Mueller has a very different history when viewed from the perspective of people’s movement. He was FBI director when the anti-war movement was most active before the Iraq War and was infiltrated and spied on by the FBI. He was also director during the Occupy Movement when occupy was infiltrated by the FBI and worked with Homeland Security and police agencies across the country to close occupy encampments.
Long-time activist Richard J. Ochs wrote on the Washington Post website:
Some history on Robert Mueller: The lead investigator into the BCCI banking scandal was Robert Mueller, who steered the investigation clear of any money laundering investigation into any of BCCI’s clients, despite ample evidence that would have incriminated a large number of international players, including the Bush family. Mueller was also the lead prosecutor in the Noriega case, and fixed it so that Noriega wasn’t allowed to mention the CIA at his trial, or show any evidence that he worked for the CIA.

Delta Oil, the Saudi oil company, is partly owned by Khalid Bin Mahfouz, business partner of the Bin Ladin family and the Bush family. Mahfouz was involved in the BCCI banking scandal, as reported in the Kerry Commission report on BCCI.

Mueller became head of the FBI three months before the 2001 anthrax letters terrorized the country into the Iraq War and Patriot Act. The anthrax was traced to a U.S. army lab and the Carlisle Group, owned by Bush family and bin Laden family. The lead FBI investigator resigned in protest of a flawed investigation (more)during Robert Mueller’s tenure.
After 9/11 there were roundup detentions of Muslim and Arab men, reportedly 1,200 people.Mueller is a defendant in an ongoing case filed by those who were detained. More on Mueller in this discussion between me, David Lindorff of This Can’t Be Happening and Brian Becker of the ANSWER Coalition and host of Loud and Clear.
We will have to wait and see how the Trump campaign investigation proceeds, but coming from the establishment in Washington, DC should be something that makes President Trump very nervous. Is Mueller the final blow for a deep state coup? KZ
Special Counsel Investigating Trump Deeply Tied To The Deep State
Former FBI agent and 9/11 whistleblower Coleen Rowley says former FBI head Robert Mueller, now appointed to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, participated in covering up the pre 9/11 role of the U.S. intelligence agencies and the Bush Administration, helped create the post 9/11 national security/surveillance state, and helped facilitate the pre-Iraq war propaganda machine

PAUL JAY: Welcome to The Real News Network. I’m Paul Jay. On Wednesday afternoon, Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert S. Mueller to be a special counsel to investigate the Russia affair, those, not his words, those are mine, to look into the whole issue of alleged Russia interference in the American elections, and that would also, one think, include a look into what happened with James Comey, and James Comey’s firing, and his memo and such. So just who is Robert Mueller? And now joining us to discuss this is Coleen Rowley. Coleen is a retired FBI agent, former legal counsel for the FBI. She testified about the 9/11 lapses to the Senate Judiciary Committee. 9/11 lapses is generous. This is what was written for me. I would say 9/11 subterfuge, but at any rate, she’s known as a whistleblower due to her testimony to two congressional committees that led to an investigation of two FBI 9/11 failures, and one would also have to be generous to call them failures. At any rate, that’s another story. Thanks for joining us, Coleen.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Yes, thanks for having me.
PAUL JAY: So who is Robert Mueller, and what do you make of this appointment?
COLEEN ROWLEY: Robert Mueller had only been director for a few days when 9/11 occurred, so he really didn’t have any responsibility for that, but he also was in charge when this kind of cover-up occurred, where they really weren’t telling the truth. The FBI and all the other officials claimed that there was no clues, that they had had no warning, etc., and that was not the case. There had been all kinds of memos and intelligence coming in. I actually had a chance to meet Director Mueller personally the night before I testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and he was more or less … There was another agent in Phoenix who had, he had done the same with, trying to get us on his side, on the FBI side, so that we wouldn’t say anything terribly embarrassing. And he told me that if I ever witnessed anything like that again, the pre-9/11 failures, that I should call him directly. I should get in touch with him.
He told me this in our office, and yeah, when you had the lead-up to the Iraq War where the FBI, actually Robert Mueller and, of course, the CIA and all the other directors, saluted smartly and went along with what Bush wanted, which was to gin up the intelligence to make a pretext for the Iraq War. For instance, in the case of the FBI, they actually had a receipt, another documentary proof, that one of the hijackers, Mohamed Atta, had not been in Prague, as Dick Cheney was alleging. And yet those directors more or less kept quiet. That included, like I said, CIA, FBI, Mueller, and it included also the Deputy Attorney General at the time, James Comey.
And so when James Comey was appointed to be FBI director by Obama, I wrote this opinion piece for The New York Times, and it appeared the same day of the confirmation hearing, and I suggested that James Comey be asked hard questions about why he had signed off on illegal warrantless monitoring, why he had signed off on the torture tactics. In fact, The New York Times even, they didn’t want me to use the word “torture.” That was still, at the time, that was a verboten term. They wanted me to say “some harsh interrogation tactics” or something, and we settled on saying, “which experts believe is torture,” that’s how it’s phrased in the op-ed. And then he also signed off, this is even worse in a way, James Comey defended a warrantless detention without charges and without right to counsel for three years of an American citizen. This, none of our mainstream news has been going back to what they think is ancient history, which is what the Bush administration did initially on.
Both of these figures, Mueller and James Comey, first of all, they became very close with each other, because this was in the first three or four years after 9/11 when there was essentially a state of emergency that Ashcroft was signing off every 90 days, and this was the creation of John Yoo and those Office of Legal Counsel. They thought that if you declared it was an emergency … By the way, all secretly. The public knew none of this, that there was this emergency, but if you declared it was a national emergency, then you could institute a form of martial law. And if you see the John Yoo memos, they say everything that, in times of war, we don’t have a First Amendment. Those are memos that are written within weeks of 9/11, but it’s based on this emergency. So you get to three years, about three years, out, and people like James Comey, Mueller, and some of the new Office of Legal Counsel lawyers that took over after Comey had left …
I mean, excuse me, after John Yoo had left, they started saying, “How long can we keep saying it’s an emergency?” And they said, “No, we’re going to have to stop this,” and that’s when that famous hospital room standoff occurs, where first James Comey races to Ashcroft’s room and stands up to the Bush administration, Gonzalez and Card. They arrive, and they try to get a very sick Ashcroft to sign off on this every 90 days emergency, again, authorizing a form of martial law, and Ashcroft, to his credit, does not sign it. Of course, the other part of this that people don’t know is that not only did Comey and the other officials go along with it before that hospital room standoff, but then they also went along with it afterwards. They simply found new loopholes and new legal mechanisms, I call it pettifoggery, legalization ways of making the same things happen afterwards.
PAUL JAY: So-
COLEEN ROWLEY: Now, Mueller and Comey both got undeserved reputations as being men of integrity. In fact, Mueller, it was extended. There’s a 10-year term for FBI director, and because he was considered so beyond reproach, and he had skated so well between this morass, and of course, some of this didn’t always come out, he was held on for 12 years. And so, again, these two were close, and when Comey spoke out about that hospital room, a lot of people objected to him and argued with him, and it was Mueller, I believe, that kept notes of the hospital room meeting. And so Mueller backed up Comey for that whole hospital room situation.
PAUL JAY: Coleen, so you look at this appointment now. Rosenstein appoints Mueller. Mueller, as you’ve told me off camera, is a very good friend of Comey, and they’ve worked together for years. Where do you see this appointment falling down? In terms of whose side, there’s clearly, it seems to me, Comey has decided to get Trump, and Trump fired Comey. Trump writes this, Comey writes this memo, and we know, at least according to the press reports in The Washington Post, Comey decides to … This memo is not classified. There’s several reports that say that some of the memos that he would keep after meeting with Trump, he would make classified. Others were unclassified. The memo that’s in question that everyone’s talking about, which is the memo that says that Trump asked him to drop the investigation into Flynn, that memo he consciously decides to click unclassified. Now, how do we know there’s even a memo? We know it because Comey has given the memo to associates. I’m doing question marks here, or quotation marks, because we don’t know who the associates are. Are they in the FBI? Are they outside the FBI?
Some of his associates then leak this information to the Post, apparently also to The New York Times, apparently also to AP, which, if the memo’s not classified, then I suppose it’s not illegal, I guess. But Comey made it so, so Comey wanted this memo to get out, clearly, after he was fired, and now his buddy is being appointed the investigator. Is Rosenstein appointing someone who knows how to be subservient and do whatever his president wants, or is he appointing someone who will work with Comey and others to get Trump?
COLEEN ROWLEY: If you go back to the Obama administration, both Mueller and Comey were close with the Obama administration, and so Obama himself, or people around him, made sure that the memos that they were writing from the summer on of the suspicions about Russia and things like that, they made sure that these memos were shared widely in the intelligence community. That’s actually been reported by mainstream news, that there was a deliberate effort to make sure that this information got out and would not somehow be kept secret. And so if you consider that both Comey and, going further back, Mueller, were very much aware of that, they worked with the Obama administration, and Comey, especially, would just be carrying out what was already begun before Trump took office. That’s what I think. I think the [S 00:09:53] on associates, and again, officials, you’ll see sometimes the sources described as officials.
You never see them described as whistleblowers, and I think that’s good, that the media does not describe them as whistleblowers, and I think there’s a lot of indications that these are leakers, certainly, but that they are not motivated for having witnessed a fraud, waste, abuse, or another illegal act, I think that this is a lot of political motivation. And maybe they can justify it in their own heads, and, again, it’s more than one person. I think there …
PAUL JAY: But where do you think-
COLEEN ROWLEY: … are people working together.
PAUL JAY: But what do you think of this appointment? Is this an appointment … Like Mueller, based on what you’ve been saying, is more than happy to fudge facts, to cover things up, and play along, but who’s he playing along with? Because you’re suggesting that maybe this is still the echo of the Obama administration, that this is part of the state apparatus that was around the Obama presidency, and perhaps, a lot of people have been arguing, including me, that the people that are so opposed to Trump’s Russia quote-unquote “détente” are people in the industrial-military complex that has so many decades, 60 years, invested into an anti-Russian narrative. Do you think this is all part of this, or is Mueller someone who’s going to help Trump?
COLEEN ROWLEY: I don’t know if he’s going to help Trump or help the deep state at this point, and probably he doesn’t even know, but Rosenstein, going back to who picked Mueller, Rosenstein probably knows both of them very well, Mueller, obviously, and Comey. And again, he’s picking them … This is a educated guess. He’s picking them because they have these reputations, whether deserved or not, for integrity, so that’s what he wanted. He wanted someone that would be above reproach …
PAUL JAY: I mean, he’s-
COLEEN ROWLEY: … while Mueller went out in the highest amount of praise. He was held over another two years, so for starters, Rosenstein is pretty powerful right now, too, vis-à-vis the Trump administration, because he was the one that was kind of sullied in all of this, saying that, “It was your recommendation to fire Comey to begin with.”
PAUL JAY: Oh, he did. He did certainly lay the groundwork for the firing of Comey.
COLEEN ROWLEY: That’s right, but in that dynamic, Rosenstein gets a little bit of power himself now to say, “Well, then, now, I’m going to pick somebody who’s above reproach.” Maybe Trump isn’t that happy with picking Mueller, who knows, but I don’t think Trump really would have much of a leg to stand on if Rosenstein says, “This is the guy we need.” I think Rosenstein was pretty powerful in this case for a lot of reasons, and Mueller, if you think about the standpoint of the public, whatever, may not be the worst choice. In fact, because of his background and reputation, I think that a lot of, certainly bipartisan, would trust him. Now, if you go back to the deep state and all of these entities that I think want to keep the war in Syria and this rapprochement …
Again, if you want to give a little bit of credit to Trump, who I did not vote for and has a lot of flaws, but one of the things that I agreed with in his campaign promises, and now, frankly, he has been carrying out, he has been meeting with Lavrov and has a meeting scheduled with Putin. It’s in order to work on the issues of Syria and ISIS so that there can be some coordination, and so I actually am for that. I think that we should give him some credit, give Trump some credit for that. There are a lot of people in Washington that this is stepping on their toes and their profits. This is not the direction they wanted to go. In fact, if you heard the debates between Hillary Clinton and whatever, this was a sore point, and Trump was criticized for this.
I think some of the motivation, maybe not all of it, but some of the motivation for all of this series of leaks from unknown officials and former intelligence sources, various ways described, I think that some of the motivation is actually to put a damper on Trump’s rapprochement or détente with Russia. And, of course, that goes back to the foreign policy, a bipartisan foreign policy that has existed after 9/11, and Trump actually has gone against that, and I think that a lot of this is … Now, how this will all play out with the investigation of Russia, I think, is actually anyone’s guess. And the reason I don’t think it’s settled is because some officials, including Feinstein, including Clapper, I think Comey even one time kind of talked out of both sides of his mouth a little bit on this, have said, made statements to the effect that there is not enough smoking evidence connecting the Trump campaign to Russia and meddling to elect Trump.
I know that they’ve said this … In fact, Feinstein said it to Wolf Blitzer. He asked her point blank, and she said, “No, there’s no evidence,” and this is after she’s been briefed.
PAUL JAY: Right, but there certainly is smoke and maybe …
COLEEN ROWLEY: There’s-
PAUL JAY: … fire in the corruption, in all the financial …
COLEEN ROWLEY: [Yeah 00:15:20].
PAUL JAY: … wheeling and dealings of Trump’s inner connections with various Russian oligarchs, and maybe Comey was on to that.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Well, this is what’s happened. This is what I and other veteran intelligence professionals warned, all of the NSA whistleblowers, warned about from the start, is, all of this massive data collection would not be so dangerous, maybe, for the common person who has quote-unquote “nothing to hide” except their privacy, but for officials who are political figures, who are engaged in this, power struggles in Washington, DC., getting information about people, and could be blackmail … Usually, it’s sex-related, but in this case, it could be all different things.
PAUL JAY: Well, Petraeus felt that blow.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Yes, but others, too, and if you go back to the Hoover era, he was able to control pretty much every president because he did have information. He collected information on all of these figures. Well, this was what we warned about, going back to this era of J. Edgar Hoover, where we had massive data collection. And honestly, it’s played out. With all of the leaks of things, you see this fear that you have these powerful figures using different pieces of information as leverage, even as blackmail, and all else fails, leak it to the press in order to get public opinion.
PAUL JAY: Right.
COLEEN ROWLEY: And it’s very … Anyways, I think that that’s one of the dangers of what we’ve always warned about with the massive data collection.
PAUL JAY: Right. Well, my fear in all of this is that something Trump wants to do anyway, now he’s got enormous pressure to do, which is to turn his sights on Iran. He’s in Saudi Arabia. He’s going to be working with the Saudis to build an anti-Iran front. There’s nothing like a good war to make him presidential, as we heard after this attack on the Syrian base. The more dangerous this gets for Trump, the more likely he needs a good war to get out of it, and then the Schumers, and the Democrats, and the deep state, everyone’s going to be cheering him on.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Well, maybe he learned the lesson that they only cheer him on for a couple of days, that this bombing-
PAUL JAY: A good fight with Iran, they’ll be cheering him on longer, I think.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Well, that’s the whole problem, and that’s what James Madison warned about, that all presidents … That’s why we were supposed to have checks and balances on going to war, and of course, that’s long been gone, dissipated, and now we have many wars, undeclared wars. We don’t even call them wars. So there’s underlying problems here. Absolutely, Trump, to his credit, has been insisting on some kind of détente with the nuclear superpowers, and even China, to some extent. Maybe, who knows with Iran? It seems like that was definitely in his campaign rhetoric, that he was going to look hard at tearing up the agreement with Iran, but I think the deep state, the military-industrial, congressional, media complex, has really been working largely together.
Whether they actually want to see Trump out and Pence in, I think they probably would be happier with someone less independent, who tweeted less, which would be Pence, and so that’s certainly a possibility, that if they can get enough momentum here, that they would prefer Pence, and I think that that would be bipartisan as well, and absolutely-
PAUL JAY: And that would be even more dangerous.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Exactly, even more dangerous, and not for Iran, but for Russia, for China, for all of these even nuclear superpowers.
PAUL JAY: All right. Thanks for joining us, Coleen.
COLEEN ROWLEY: Thank you.
PAUL JAY: Thank you for joining us on The Real News Network.

The Great 9/11 Coverup

Sep 11, 2016 9:50 AM

Authored by Eric Zuesse, originally posted at Off-Guardian.org,
Did you happen to notice that after more than a decade of the ‘news’ media’s demanding publication of “the missing 28 pages” (which turned out actually to have been 29 pages) from the U.S. Congress’s investigation into 9/11, the document’s press-coverage, finally, on 15 July 2016, turned out to have been little-to-none? And did you notice that the little there was, said it contained nothing important? Perhaps you didn’t get to know even this much about the press-coverage of it, because the U.S. Congress, which had been hiding the document ever since 2003, dumped it on a Friday night, in order for it to receive as little press-coverage as possible.
Well, what that document actually showed, and proved (and cited FBI investigators who could then have testified in public, if requested), was the opposite of unimportant: that the Saudi Ambassador to the United States, Prince Bandar bin Sultan al-Saud (who was known in Washington as “Bandar Bush,” because of his closeness to the Bush family), had secretly been paying the Saudi handlers of at least two of the 15 Saudis among the 19 9/11 hijackers, and that Bandar’s wife and other relatives were also paying those hijackers-to-be, and their families — thus enabling the future hijackers to obtain the necessary pilot-training etc., for the 9/11 attacks.
How much news-coverage of this was there in the U.S.’democracy’ that is supposed to be informing the public about such things, instead of continuing the cover-ups of them?

"We're at war": Notes from 9/11

Fullscreen
Why do U.S. ‘news’ media hide it — after having demanded for more than ten years that the ‘missing 28 pages’ become published?

But that’s not all there is to the cover-up: As I mentioned and documented in my July 20th news-report on “9/11: Bush’s Guilt and the ’28 Pages’,” U.S. President George W. Bush was also involved in the 9/11 operation: He had instructed his National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice to block his obtaining from U.S. government sources any specific information about what the attacks would entail, or about the date on which they would occur. (Presumably, he already knew, via his private communications with Prince Bandar or someone else who was in on the event’s planning, all that he had wanted to know about the coming event.)
When CIA Director George Tenet, on 10 July 2001, was practically screaming to Rice to allow him into the Oval Office, to meet privately with the President to inform him of how urgent the situation had become to take action on it, she said: “We’re not quite ready to consider this. We don’t want the clock to start ticking.” Tenet was shocked, and dismayed. That encounter with Rice was intended to urge the President to establish a hit-team to take out bin Laden, so as to avert the operation — whatever it was, or would turn out to be. The way that Chris Whipple put this, in his terrific report in Politico magazine, on 12 November 2015, titled “The Attacks Will Be Spectacular”, was that, “they did not want a paper trail to show that they’d been warned.”
Apparently, “Bandar Bush” knew the details, but his friend George W. Bush did not — Bush needed “deniability” — it’s not for nothing that he was able to say, after the event, as Condoleezza Rice was to put it when speaking to reporters on 16 May 2002, “This government did everything that it could in a period in which the information was very generalized, in which there was nothing specific to react to … Had this president known of something more specific, or known that a plane was going to be used as a missile, he would have acted on it.”
How does she now square that statement with her having told Tenet, on 10 July 2001, “We’re not quite ready to consider this. We don’t want the clock to start ticking.”? What ‘clock’? Why not? No one asks her — especially not under oath.
Is that the way things happen in a democracy, even 15 years after the event?
On 10 September 2012, Kurt Eichenwald, who had reported for The New York Times, was then issuing his new book on the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, 500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars, and he headlined an op-ed then in his former newspaper (which thus could hardly have declined to accept it), “The Deafness Before the Storm”, describing the most puzzling aspect of the lead-up to 9/11:
It was perhaps the most famous presidential briefing in history.
On Aug. 6, 2001, President George W. Bush received a classified review of the threats posed by Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network, Al Qaeda. That morning’s “presidential daily brief” — the top-secret document prepared by America’s intelligence agencies — featured the now-infamous heading: “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” A few weeks later, on 9/11, Al Qaeda accomplished that goal.
On April 10, 2004, the Bush White House declassified that daily brief — and only that daily brief — in response to pressure from the 9/11 Commission, which was investigating the events leading to the attack. Administration officials dismissed the document’s significance, saying that, despite the jaw-dropping headline, it was only an assessment of Al Qaeda’s history, not a warning of the impending attack. While some critics considered that claim absurd, a close reading of the brief showed that the argument had some validity.
That is, unless it was read in conjunction with the daily briefs preceding Aug. 6, the ones the Bush administration would not release. While those documents are still not public, I have read excerpts from many of them, along with other recently declassified records, and come to an inescapable conclusion: the administration’s reaction to what Mr. Bush was told in the weeks before that infamous briefing reflected significantly more negligence than has been disclosed. In other words, the Aug. 6 document, for all of the controversy it provoked, is not nearly as shocking as the briefs that came before it.
Those “briefs” still are not published. And now, after the revelation, by Chris Whipple, that Condoleezza Rice was under instruction from her boss not to allow him to be informed too early for “the clock to start ticking,” we can understand why there is still so much that hasn’t yet been released to the public, in our ‘democracy’, about who was really behind 9/11.
On 17 April 2016, Paul Sperry in the New York Post headlined “How US covered up Saudi role in 9/11”, and he reported that his own investigation showed: “Actually, the kingdom’s involvement was deliberately covered up at the highest levels of our government. And the coverup goes beyond locking up 28 pages of the Saudi report in a vault in the US Capitol basement. Investigations were throttled. Co-conspirators were let off the hook.” But isn’t it time, now, to demand that Bush’s role also be explored — not only that the Saud family’s (especially Bandar’s) role in it be prosecuted? After all, Bush was the one who took a Presidential oath.
Or: Is the U.S. not enough of a democracy, for that to happen — for the Constitution to be enforced, by the U.S. President after Bush (the President who will not prosecute his intended successor)? How total must the non-accountability at the top be, before we call the country a “dictatorship” — only a fake ‘democracy’?
Regarding the actions that brought down the three World Trade Center Buildings, WTC1, WTC2, and WTC7, there also is good reason to distrust the official ‘history’. Witness accounts both by firefighters and by the general public were videoed at the time saying that they heard multiple explosions, which indicated controlled demolitions after the two plane-crashes into WTC1 and WTC2. Other witnesses of the WTC7 collapse also heard explosions. Regarding WTC7, there was testimony from the owner of the WTC, Larry Silverstein, saying that he instructed the Fire Department not to go into WTC7 but simply to “pull it.” (And his subsequent statement saying he didn’t really mean that and he meant only to “pull” the firefighters from that building, which actually had none, was debunked.)
Even the government’s “Final Report on the Collapse of World Trade Center Building 7” acknowledged (p. 48) that there had been “(2) a freefall descent over approximately eight stories of gravitational acceleration for approximately 2.25 s[econds]” meaning that that 8-story segment had been blasted so that, throughout those 8 stories, there was zero resistance to the collapsed portion falling through it from above.
This alone constitutes solid and conclusive physical proof of the official lie, though itself published in the official source. And yet on the very next page in that official document is stated, “Blast events did not play a role in the collapse of WTC 7. … There were no witness reports of such a loud noise.”
But there were such witness reports; and, anyway, the very admission (on the prior page) that there was free-fall over an 8-story segment of the building, constitutes acknowledgement of physical proof that there had been controlled demolition on WTC7. Further, there has even been expert testimony that nano-thermite was used to bring down each of these buildings. But clearly, whatever the truth of the matter is, the U.S. Government has been lying, and continues to lie, about 9/11. For at least the past 16 years, we’ve been living in a dictatorship. And the evidence suggests that this has been the case ever since at least 1981.

Ex-Fed: I Quit Robert Mueller’s FBI, But He's the Right Pick
Michael German

I am not a fan of Mueller.
He was the third director I worked under as an FBI agent. I joined the Bureau in 1988, when William Sessions served as director; worked through Louis Freeh’s term; and finally resigned in 2004, just about three years into Mueller’s tenure. I only had one direct interaction with him as an agent. In 2002, I alerted him to a whistleblower complaint I made about a mishandled counterterrorism case. Though he had called for whistleblowers to report any problems in terrorism investigations just a few months earlier, he never responded to my email, and the retaliation against me only intensified. Two years later, I reported the matter to / and resigned, starting a new career as a civil-rights advocate lobbying against many of the policies and

react-text: 1398 Mueller is a good selection both because of what he is, and what he isn’t. First, his experience as a federal prosecutor is unsurpassed, including stints leading the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and the United States Attorney’s office in San Francisco. In just one of his notable cases, Mueller led the prosecution of Libyan intelligence agents responsible for the Pan Am 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland. Then he spent twelve years directing the FBI. He clearly knows how to run large, multi-faceted investiga

The Feds Are Not Our Friends: The Troubled History of Our ‘Nonpartisan’ FBI

ANN SCHNEIDER May 22 2017

Much adu has been made on both sides of the political aisle over the nonpartisan role the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is meant to play within America’s judicial system.
When James Comey sent a letter to members of Congress 11 days before November’s presidential election informing them he had reopened the probe into Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information, overjoyed Republican lawmakers praised the maneuver as an act of transparency while Democrats chided Comey for influencing the vote. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced he had “lost confidence” in the FBI Director.
When President Trump fired Comey this May amid the ongoing investigation into Russian collusion with his campaign, Schumer criticized Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (who up until now has had a reputation as a nonpartisan) for drafting a memo at the White House’s behest that gave Trump cover for axing Comey.
“If Mr. Rosenstein is true to his word,” Schumer told reporters on May 10, “that he believes this investigation must be, quote, ‘fair, free, thorough and politically independent,’ if he believes as I do that the American people must be able to have faith in the impartiality of this investigation, he must appoint a special prosecutor and get his investigation out of the hands of the FBI and far away from the heavy hand of this administration.”
Trump’s political opponents got what they wished for two days later when the Justice Department announced former FBI Director Robert Mueller would be stepping in as special counsel to investigate Trump. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers who soured on Comey during the Russian probe have defended his firing. The president complained on May 19 that he is the victim of “the greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.”
Whenever either political party has been wounded by the FBI of late its members have called for a return to impartiality, to nonpartisanship. But the bureau is undeserving of such sentimental longing. Its history of using extrajudicial means to achieve political aims goes back to its founding.
The FBI particularly does not take well to critics, as Marcus Garvey found out. In 1919, the founder of the 4-million strong, multinational United Negro Improvement Association, wrote an article in the Negro World criticizing underhanded investigators. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover directed his agents to find cause to deport Garvey as an undesirable alien (hiring their first Black agents to do the job). Finding no grounds for prosecution, the FBI manufactured a mail fraud case against Garvey. He served five years in prison and was deported. This was one of the FBI’s first big political acts, along with rounding up and deporting roughly 6,000 foreign-born radicals, including the Russian anarchist Emma Goldman, during the Red Scare of 1919.
The National Lawyers Guild incurred Hoover’s wrath in 1950 when it issued a “Report on the Alleged Practices of the FBI,” among which were warrantless searches and breaches if attorney-client privilege. The report — based on documents released in McCarthy-victim Judith Coplon’s trial — concluded: “On a strictly numerical basis, the FBI may commit more federal crimes than it ever detects.”
Documents subsequently released revealed that, over the course of four decades, the bureau used more than 1,000 informants, tapped phones and broke into Guild offices to steal membership lists. The FBI compiled biographies on 125 Guild officers and members, justifying its scrutiny because the Guild “consistently favored measures beneficial to labor,” advocated progressive taxation and supported anti-lynching legislation.
In 1961, Hoover directed his agents to gather information on twelve leaders of the Puerto Rican independence movement “concerning their weaknesses, morals, criminal records, spouses, children, family life, education and personal activities,” as part of the Counterintelligence Program known as COINTELPRO. During the 60’s and 70’s, when the movement for independence was strongest, an estimated 75,000 Puerto Ricans were under surveillance.
In the 1980’s, participants in a hodgepodge of left-wing political causes — the sanctuary movement, the nuclear freeze movement, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) — were all spied upon by the FBI, as shown by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ross Gelbspan. His 1991 book, Break-ins, Death Threats and the FBI detailed how the FBI used a Salvadoran ex-Baptist Minister named Frank Varelli to turn CISPES from a peaceful opponent of U.S. intervention in Central America into “an agent of domestic terrorism.”
A decade earlier on the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, there had been 57 violent deaths of Native Americans, none of which were investigated by the FBI. In 1973, the American Indian Movement (AIM) began a 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, site of George Custer’s infamous 1890 massacre. The FBI, Bureau of Indian Affairs and state police laid siege to the occupation, resulting in two deaths, 562 arrests and 185 federal indictments. Despite all the FBI’s efforts, few charges resulted in convictions. Rather, so much evidence of government misconduct and witness manipulation came to light that FBI Associate Director Mark Felt came to Rapid City to testify in court to defend his agency against the critics.
There is no evidence that the Feds circling the White House are doing anything other than what the FBI has always done — defending the political status quo.
Attorney William Kunstler, representing AIM activists Dennis Means and Russell Banks, noticed during the trial a door repeatedly opening and shutting. Kunstler quietly motioned to the judge, walked over to the door and yanked it open. Two FBI agents practically fell into the courtroom. They thoroughly denied they had been listening in.
Unbeknownst to AIM at the time, Kerr McGee and Union Carbide had by then discovered uranium in the Black Hills. The 22.5 million acres recognized as Indian territory by the 1868 treaty were ultimately whittled down to less than half that size. It did not serve corporate interests, nor the FBI’s, to have AIM asserting their right to control their own resources.
Not content with witness-tampering, after 9-11 the FBI began aggressively recruiting informants to spy on Muslim communities, utilizing coercive tactics like putting them on a “no fly” list unless they agreed to spy. Shahed Hussein, facing criminal charges of his own, successfully entrapped four petty criminals in Newburgh with a fake plot to bomb a Bronx synagogue in 2009. Before that, using a slightly different identity, Hussein was able to convict a pizzeria owner in Albany of material support for terrorism.
FBI agent Robert Fuller ran both the Newburgh sting and one in Fort Dix in 2006 in which 5 Albanian brothers were tricked into buying weapons supposedly for an attack on military personnel. They were sentenced to life plus 30 years. Each sting took 13 to 16 months to bear fruit, in the form of chargeable offenses. When one of the five, early in the operation, tried to make a report of the weapons trading to the FBI, the FBI refused to accept the report.
James Comey deserves credit for racing to Alberto Gonzales to the bedside of Attorney General John Ashcroft in March 2004 to thwart an extension of the NSA’s warrantless domestic eavesdropping. But it was also Comey (under then-FBI Director Robert Mueller) who asserted in May 2002 that the United States could pick up and detain American citizen Jose Padilla in a Navy brig, without access to counsel, hold him for years and interrogate him without articulable suspicion “to see what he knows” of alleged terrorist conspiracies. This was the trial created the designation “enemy combatant” and Padilla was the guinea pig.
Asked in an interview if he intended to present the charges to a grand jury as required by the Fifth Amendment, Comey answered no. “I don’t believe that we could use this information in a criminal case,” he explained, “because we deprived him of access to his counsel and questioned him in the absence of counsel. . . We’ll figure out down the road what we do with José Padilla.”
Former FBI Director and now Special Counsel Robert Mueller chose as General Counsel to the FBI Valerie Caproni, in August 2003. A report made by the Office of Inspector General Glenn Fine found that between 2003 and 2006, Ms. Caprioni approved the use of so-called exigent letters containing false information to obtain personal phone records for more than 5,500 numbers in 722 locations. Rather than being fired as some in Congress urged, she was appointed a federal judge for the Southern District of New York in September 2013.
While Comey was fired for the Russian inquiry (Trump himself has basically admitted as much) and Mueller’s appointment as special counsel certainly puts the president in hot water, viewed through an historical lens these recent developments do not indicate the FBI has somehow become a-political nor that it is on the side of activists opposing Trump. There is no evid

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana lawmakers have agreed to increase police training requirements and better track officers' disciplinary records, nearly a year after Alton Sterling was fatally shot.

Baton Rouge Rep. Ted James' bill calls for officers to receive at least 400 hours of basic training and study de-escalation practices and how to recognize biases. The bill was prompted by the July death of Sterling, a black man killed during a struggle with two white Baton Rouge police officers.

The Senate gave final passage to the measure.

The Feds Are Not Our Friends: The Troubled History of Our ‘Nonpartisan’ FBI

Much ado has been made on both sides of the political aisle over the nonpartisan role the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is meant to play within America’s judicial system.

Emma Goldman’s mug shot. The Russian anarchist was among roughly 6,000 foreign-born radicals rounded up and deported during the Red Scare of 1919.

While Comey was fired for the Russian inquiry (Trump himself has basically admitted as much) and Mueller’s appointment as special counsel certainly puts the president in hot water, viewed through an historical lens these recent developments do not indicate the FBI has somehow become apolitical nor that it is on the side of activists opposing Trump. There is no evidence that the Feds circling the White House are doing anything other than what the FBI has always done — defending the political status quo, in this case from a man in the seat of power who so clearly reveals its flaws. Business could soon be back to usual.

Judicial Watch Demands FBI Recover Records Unlawfully Removed by Former Director James Comey – Warns of Lawsuit
Contact: Jill Farrell, Judicial Watch, 202-646-5172

WASHINGTON, June 15, 2017 /Standard Newswire/ -- Judicial Watch today announced it sent Acting FBI Director Andrew G. McCabe a warning letter concerning the FBI's legal responsibility under the Federal Records Act (FRA) to recover records, including memos Comey subsequently leaked to the media, unlawfully removed from the Bureau by former Director James Comey. The June 14 letter from Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton states:

As you are well aware, former FBI Director James Comey gave sworn testimony last week before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Among other things, Mr. Comey confirmed that, while in office, he created various memoranda regarding his meetings with President Trump. Mr. Comey also confirmed that, after his departure from the FBI, he provided at least some of these memoranda to a third party, Columbia Law School Professor Daniel Richman, for the purpose of leaking them to the press. Various media outlets now have reported that Professor Richman has provided these memoranda to the FBI. It is unclear whether he still retains copies of the memoranda.

I am writing to you on behalf of Judicial Watch, Inc., a not-for-profit educational organization that seeks to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity in government and fidelity to the rule of law. In furtherance of its public interest mission, Judicial Watch regularly requests access to the records of the FBI through the Freedom of Information Act and disseminates its findings to the public. In fact, on May 16, 2017, Judicial Watch submitted a FOIA request seeking these specific memoranda removed from the FBI by Mr. Comey. Judicial Watch also has pending FOIA lawsuits in which the memoranda may be at issue.

These memoranda were created by Mr. Comey while serving as FBI director, were written on his FBI laptop, and concerned official government business. As such, they indisputably are records subject to the Federal Records Act. 44 U.S.C. §§ 2101-18, 2901-09, 3101-07, and 3301-14. The fact that Mr. Comey removed these memoranda from the FBI upon his departure, apparently for the purpose of subsequently leaking them to the press, confirms the FBI's failure to retain and properly manage its records in accordance with the Federal Records Act. Even if Mr. Comey no longer has possession of these particular memoranda, as he now claims, some or all of these memoranda may still be in possession of a third party, such as Professor Richman, and must be recovered. Mr. Comey's removal of these memoranda also suggests that other records may have been removed by Mr. Comey and may remain in his possession or in the possession of others. If so, these records must be recovered by the FBI as well.

Melted Texas-Sized Section of Ross Ice Shelf Surface During 2016
“In West Antarctica, we have a tug-of-war going on between the influence of El Niños and the westerly winds, and it looks like the El Niños are winning. It’s a pattern that is emerging. And because we expect stronger, more frequent El Niños in the future with a warming climate, we can expect more major surface melt events in West Antarctica (emphasis added).” — David Bromwhich, co-author of a recent study identifying massive summer surface melt in West Antarctica during 2016.

******

If you’re concerned about human-caused global warming, then you should also be concerned about ice. In particular — how warming might melt a miles-high pile of the frozen stuff covering the massive continent of Antarctica.

During recent years, scientists have become more and more worried as they’ve observed warming oceans eating away at the undersides of floating ice sheets. This particular process threatens numerous cities and coastal regions with swiftening sea level rise as ice margins melt and glaciers the size of mountain ranges clamor for release into the world’s oceans.

Major Antarctic Surface Melt Event During 2016

But another potential process in a still warmer world threatens to compound the impact of the heating waters that are already melting so many of the world’s glaciers from the bottom up — large scale surface melt.

(A major warming event during January of 2016 turned a Texas-sized section of Antarctica’s surface into slush. This occurred as a storm running in from the Southern Ocean delivered warm air and rainfall to sections of West Antarctica. Scientists are concerned that more major surface melt is on the way for Antarctica as the Earth’s climate heats up and that repeated warming and rainfall events in this typically-frozen region may further quicken rates of sea level rise. Image source: Earth Nullschool.)

During January of 2016, as a very strong El Nino was combining with human-caused global warming to spike atmospheric temperatures to 1.2 C above 1880s levels, something pretty strange and concerning happened. Over the course of about 15 days, a 300,000 square mile section of the Ross Ice Shelf surface and nearby lands over West Antarctica experienced melting. This mass slushing across Antarctica’s surface occurred as a warm storm swept in from the Southern Ocean (see image above) to deliver an unheard of rainfall event to the region.

West Antarctica is typically too cold for such weather. It is also often too dry. The region is well know by climate researchers as a frozen desert. But as human-forced climate change has warmed the nearby ocean, warm, moist winds blowing in from these heating waters have become more frequent.

Westerlies Interrupted by Warming Ocean

Antarctica is typically protected by strong westerly winds that keep both heat and moisture out. But a warming ocean environment, according to Ohio State researchers, is enabling El Nino to interrupt these westerlies and hurl increasing volumes of heat and moisture over the glaciers of Antarctica. In 2016, these winds bore with them an odd rainstorm that set off a massive surface melt event.

(Surface melt over a large section of West Antarctica lasted for as much as 15 days as heat and moisture from the surrounding ocean beat back a protective barrier of westerly winds and invaded the frozen continent. According to scientists, these events are likely to become more frequent and long-lasting as the climate warms. Image source: Ohio State University.)

When combined with already-active melt from ocean warming, surface melt could further serve to destabilize ice sheets and swiften sea level rise. This was exactly the concern that David Bromwich, an Antarctic researcher at Ohio State and co-author of the paper that identified this strange event highlighted in this statement (please see related Washington Post article here):

“It provides us with a possible glimpse of the future. You probably have read these analyses of West Antarctica, many people think it’s slowly disintegrating right now, and it’s mostly thought to be from the warm water eating away at the bottom of critical ice shelves. Well, that’s today. In the future, we could see action at the surface of these ice shelves as well from surface melting. So that makes them potentially much more unstable (emphasis added).”

It’s worth noting that this particular storm, though unusual and noteworthy, did not produce too much in the way of surface melt ponding. Instead, the storm turned a large section of the Antarctic surface to a slurpee-like slush. But this event did deliver a considerable amount of heat to the Ross Ice Shelf region. And repeated instances could serve to seriously soften this massive ice formation.

Eventually, as warming worsens, significant surface melt and flooding could help to shatter large buttressing ice shelves like Ross or even generate risks of surface glacial outburst flooding in instances where permanent surface melt lakes form behind an ice dam. But the primary concern at this time is that these warm rain events provide a compounding melt influence that adds to risks for more rapid sea level rise this Century.

Naomi Oreskes on How to Write about science

HISTORY OF SCIENCE professor Naomi Oreskes talks about climate change the way one might expect of both an earth scientist and a historian. “Science has to be part of the conversation on climate change,” she says, “but it’s not the whole conversation. At this time, I actually don’t think it’s the most important piece. There’s a basic issue of justice here, and we desperately need economists and sociologists and philosophers and artists to be heard.” Her humanist instincts allow her to move a wide audience in a way most scientists never achieve. Her work has helped broaden the public’s acceptance of climate change as an issue of scientific consensus rather than debate, and for taking up this public mantle of climate change advocacy, she will be honored with the Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communication this winter. Oreskes recently talked to Harvard Magazine about the climate-denial industry, the political role of scientists, and writing about academic research for a wide audience.

Oreskes insists that she never intended to become a “climate-change warrior.” In 2004, when she was researching how scientific consensus and dissent emerge, she published “The Scientific Consensus on Climate Change,” a review of the scientific literature that made clear the widespread agreement among scientists that climate change is real and created by humans. One journalist, she remembers, thanked her for the article; every time he wrote about climate change, he told her, readers accused him of bias for not covering the contrarian side, and her paper helped him show that there was no legitimate contrarian side.

Then she became the target of attacks herself. “So I ended up trying to figure out why I was being attacked for publishing a fairly straightforward analysis of the state of scientific discussion, and what I discovered was a remarkable story, which at the time was not understood. There was an organized climate-change denial network—a group of people and think tanks largely funded by the fossil-fuel industry, who were deliberately trying to persuade the American people that there was a big scientific debate about climate change.” In hindsight, that network might agree that it erred in targeting a historian of science who was also a good writer. In 2010, she published Merchants of Doubt, about the strategies used by the tobacco, fossil-fuel, and other industries to undermine the authority of scientists. The book captured a wide audience at a moment when climate change was gaining acceptance as an issue of public concern.

It isn’t just the business interests of the fossil-fuel industry that drive climate denial, Oreskes stresses. “It’s also about an ideological argument about the role of government. This is partly why it resonates with a lot of people who don’t necessarily have stock in ExxonMobil.” Anti-government ideology has made climate denial particularly hard to counter, she believes, because its purpose is to politicize science, and scientists don’t like to be political. “Imagine you’re a science professor and you want to teach factual information. But if you stand up in class and say climate change is real, you can be accused by your students of being political in the classroom. I have been accused of this.”

Should academics become more comfortable, then, taking moral and political positions related to their work? There’s been a move among economists, for example, to think more seriously about questions of distribution and fairness. Oreskes answers in two parts. “I think economics is different because all the social sciences are engaged with questions about society,” she argues. “For many years, the economics profession tried to put forward the idea of economics as a value-neutral science. I think that was intellectually erroneous. I don’t think you can have a discussion about the distribution of goods and services that isn’t at least in some ways implicitly involved with creating a just world.” The natural sciences, she argues, are different because scientists can answer empirical questions in a way that doesn’t diminish moral questions. “If we’re asking, ‘Has the planet warmed up?’ that’s a question about the chemistry of the earth, and it can be answered with empirical data and it can be separated from the question of what we should do about it. I think it’s important for scientists to be clear in their minds about that separation.”

Questions about the moral and civic dimensions of climate change are for other thinkers to answer, Oreskes suggests. “Much more we’re seeing people in the social sciences, the humanities, the arts, realizing that we need to hear their voices. Ultimately, if you ask, ‘Why does climate change matter?’ The answer gets back to questions of our values and the common good. Climate change matters because people are getting hurt, because people are going to lose their livelihoods and communities, because the people who will be hurt the most are not the people who created the problem.”

In this respect, Oreskes says she’s often been misinterpreted. “Sometimes people think that because I am very publicly engaged in discussing climate change, that means that I think all scientists should be,” she says. “But that is not my view. We need some scientists to explain the science, but most scientists just want to do science, and that’s fine. Moreover, if we start getting into the moral questions, well, scientists are not necessarily the best experts.”

On some level, it appears that climate-change denial is diminishing among politicians who wish to be taken seriously, or is, at least, becoming less acceptable than it once was. That may appear to be true, she says, but denialists understand that the debate is a moving target, and adjust their arguments to the political climate. Even if it’s less acceptable to deny climate change outright, that is a separate question from whether the nation is prepared to do anything about it. “There was a time when the tobacco industry denied that tobacco was harmful. Then they said, ‘OK, there’s some harm, but people are grown-ups, and they can decide for themselves.’ We see the same thing to some extent with climate denial. People first said there is no climate change. Then they said it’s not caused by people. Then they said there is climate change and it’s caused by people, but it would be too expensive to fix.”

“Donald Trump has said publicly that climate change is a hoax created by the Chinese in order to undermine our economy,” Oreskes adds. His widespread appeal might support the theory that the group she calls “merchants of doubt” has weakened the legitimacy of science in the minds of ordinary Americans. Still, she complicates the narrative that the public is mistrusting of academics: “Public-opinion polls show that the American people still overall trust science and scientists much more than they trust politicians or business leaders.”

A frequent writer for the public, Oreskes has reflected a great deal on the role of the media in people’s understanding of academic research. It can be difficult even for responsible journalists to write about a single study or idea without overstating its significance. What might writers do to be more honest in their reporting? Is it ever legitimate to write a news story about a single study—a practice that’s pervasive in the media, including this magazine? “In a perfect world, the answer would be no,” she responds. “On some level, it is irresponsible. But there’s tremendous pressure to do that. Scientific knowledge is never based on one paper, not even the most important papers in the history of science.”

Reporting on isolated studies can not only create confusion about the intellectual process, but also undermine faith in the process itself. If the press embellishes one study and its findings are later repudiated, as often happens, that can create the impression (potentially ripe for exploitation by merchants of doubt) that scholars are always changing their minds. To science writers thinking about these questions, Oreskes offers the following advice. Beyond the need to contextualize a study even more than seems necessary, journalists should also consider it a duty to challenge editors who ask for a dishonest story. If that means taking more time than the writer has been assigned, she jokes, that’s okay, because “science stories are rarely emergencies.”

Re: THE INMATES ARE RUNNING THE ASYLUM

Postby divideandconquer » Sun Jun 18, 2017 11:02 am

In my humble opinion, the following case of a well-known career criminal whose record dates back to his teenage days in the 1950s, is just more evidence that the inmates are running the asylum, insofar as it appears that, in this case, eyes were averted in order to allow one man's (whose family's lineage is traced back to 1155) reign of terror continue for almost two decades. If it wasn't for his counterfeiting, it seems as if he would've never been caught. Not to mention, the lack of press when this guy makes Bundy look like a boy scout...okay, not really, but you get my drift.

DeBardeleben was a strange case in many ways. He's every bit Bundy's equal, if not his superior, as a perverted killer, but he never got any national press. There were a few local stories, but only one television station caught him on video, going to and from court in North Carolina.

Anyway, I just watched the story of the highly intelligent (IQ =145) counterfeiter/serial killer James "Mike" Debardeleben, Jr. on a show called "Hear No Evil". A man who was known to impersonate law enforcement to abduct his prey. According to FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood, he was "the best-documented sexual sadist since the Marquis de Sade, and one of America's most dangerous criminals," yet, as far as I know, hardly anyone has heard of him. Better yet, despite a proliferation of evidence that spans almost two decades (Date of murders: 1965 - 1983), and "evidence of crimes so heinous that thoughts of those crimes would haunt them [agents] for the rest of their lives," this guy was never tried for murder. Supposedly, "because of the nature of the investigation the FBI was reluctant to help." Why? Was there something that they didn't want to come out in court? Or, as the official explanation goes, he was already serving two life sentences so why bother. Well, what about the ultimate penalty? I don't believe in the death penalty but if anyone deserves it, it's this guy, but this guy wasn't talking and if they put the death penalty on the table, he might start. I think it's pretty obvious that they didn't want him talking.

There was an article in the Dallas Morning News from May 26, 1984: Ex-Texan a suspect in 40 killings which I can't find making me believe it was scrubbed for whatever reason. Knowing his history, the Secret Service and/or law enforcement did NOT investigate the considerable evidence--this is prior to 1983, in 1976 the Secret Service admits they found homemade pornography of underage girls. In the A&E documentary, they recreate this fact when it shows agents breaking in on DBLN rape room - they recreated the simulation of homemade pornography of girls being tortured with photographs attached to the wall above his rape bed...in 1976! -- that DeBardeleben was likely involved in kidnapping, raping and torturing, not to mention, murdering girls and women during from this era. He got a free pass. Why? During that time, there were a vast number of girls who went missing of which he could've easily been a suspect, from the The Fort Worth Missing Trio to the disappearance of Carlene Tengelsen in 1972 to Michelle Martinko - murdered at the newly opened Westdale mall in Cedar Rapids Iowa on December 19, 1979. to the disappearance of the Lyons Sisters, where one policeman said DeBardeleban would've been a suspect but because of politics--Secret Service retained all of the evidence-- it prevented the Montgomery County Police from pursuing him . And that's just the very very tip of a very very dark iceberg.

Someone claimed to have been in touch with someone who was involved with Debardeleben's case and that person said that he would "be afraid of going through all that evidence now with the technology we have today because of what he might find. He also claimed that some of the evidence that was destroyed or set aside for garbage by the storage places where Debardeleben kept his things actually contained bloody panties and other items that could have easily been processed for DNA now and that the secret service may still have some evidence it recovered that can be tested"

The actual number of victims of DeBardeleben's will never be known. Unlike most criminals of his ilk, DeBardeleben refuses to acknowledge guilt or brag about any of his crimes. However, the Secret Service believe that he had been preying on women for eighteen years prior to his arrest. Considering that Ted Bundy, whose killing spree lasted only five years and resulted in the deaths of somewhere between 28 to 100 women, the number of women DeBardeleben is believed to have preyed on is staggering.

Like so many other serial killers, his background included the military. His father was US Navy and he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force; his brother Ralph who eventually committed suicide, was also in the military. According to the genealogy of his family--that dates back to the year 1155 and is part of a group labeled, Old Colony Ancestors, which led to "Historical Newspaper Collection" where I found the 1984 article-- he has another sibling who remains private.

The Secret Service Agents, jury members, judges and investigators involved in this case, believe that DeBardeleben's crimes are unsurpassed to those of any other known individual.

BARRINGTON --- The Police Department has begun distributing flyers to real estate agents throughout Rhode Island asking for information on James M. Debardeleben, the suspect in the murder 13 1/2 years ago of Barrington real estate agent Edna B. MacDonald.

John Migliaccio, an assistant attorney general working with Barrington police on Mrs. MacDonald's murder, said that evidence from the U.S. Secret Service indicates that Debardeleben had been in and out of Rhode Island from at least 1971 to 1981.

Investigators also believe Debardeleben, during some of his stops in Rhode Island, visited other real estate agencies besides the Barrington concern that employed Mrs. MacDonald.

"We're sending the format he used to all real estate agencies in Rhode Island to pinpoint when he was in Rhode Island and to determine if there are unsolved crimes during the same period he was in Rhode Island," Migliaccio said.

THE FLYERS list Debardeleben's alleged method of operation: asking to visit only unoccupied homes in rural areas, saying price was no object, placing several calls to real estate agents' homes and offices, setting a meeting with an agent then calling to say his automobile had broken down and asking to be picked up at a motel or hotel, and wearing a business suit with gloves on hands and carrying an attache case.

The Police Department also wants agents to view a lineup of photographs to determine if they recognize Debardeleben.

In the future, the Police Department also plans to serve as a clearinghouse for southern New England on the Debardeleben case.

After Debardeleben'a arrest in May, 1983, on counterfeiting charges, Secret Service agents seized evidence from his apartment in Alexandria, Va., and from storage bins in Alexandria and Manassas, Va.

THE EVIDENCE has linked him to dozens of crimes, including murder and rape. Included in the evidence are photographs of more than 1,000 young women, many naked, and many unaccounted for, according to the Secret Service.

Because Debardeleben had been in and out of New England over the years, some of the missing women could be from this area, investigators believe.

The Police Department has copies of the photographs of the women. Families with missing members could come to Barrington to view the photographs, Migliaccio and Police Chief Alfred T. Oliver Jr. said.

"We're not going to stop with this one case," Migliaccio said.

Besides the photographs, the Secret Service seized 18,500 documents from Debardeleben, including coded murder plots and coded itineraries of his cross-country travels.

Lawyer demands new trial for client convicted in fatal 1998 shooting after he finds hidden police report

Tuesday, June 27, 2017, 5:13 PM

Prosecutors allegedly withheld a key police report from a man who says he was wrongly convicted of murder nearly 20 years ago — and his supporters hope it's the key to his freedom.

Robert Gottlieb, attorney for 41-year-old Jon-Adrian Velazquez, said Tuesday the Manhattan district attorney deliberately kept from his client’s trial counsel a document that reveals an interview with a witness who saw the real killer shortly before the attack.

Velazquez had been charged together in the Jan. 27, 1998, fatal shooting of Albert Ward, a retired police officer who ran an illegal gambling parlor in Harlem.

Wind and Solar Accounted For 57 Percent of New U.S. Generating Capacity Additions in First Quarter
Policy sure makes one heck of a difference. Thanks to legislation and investments by China, the U.S., Europe and numerous other countries around the world, solar energy has reached price parity or better with natural gas and coal over a growing subset of the globe. In the United States, fully 36 states in 2017 are seeing solar at parity with fossil fuel based generation. And costs for this new, clean energy source are expected to keep falling over at least the next five years as production lines continue to expand and technology and efficiency improves.

Wind, already competitive with natural gas and coal in many areas by the mid 2000s, is also seeing continued price declines as turbine sizes increase and industrial efficiency gains ground. As a result, the two mainstream energy sources most capable of combating human-caused climate change are taking larger and larger shares of the global power generation markets.

(Solar and wind continue to gain a larger share of new capacity additions than competing fossil fuel based generation. Image source: SEIA.)

This trend continued through Q1 of 2017 as about 4 gigawatts of new generation capacity or 57 percent of all new generation came from wind and solar in the U.S. Solar added about 2.044 GW, which was a slight drop from Q1 of 2016. Wind, however, surged to 2 GW — representing the strongest first quarter since 2009. In total, U.S. renewable generating capacity including wind, solar, hydro, biomass, geothermal and others is now at 19.51 percent of the national total. Expected to hit above 20 percent by year-end, renewables have now far outpaced nuclear (at 9.1 percent) and are swiftly closing on coal (at 24.25 percent).

Globally, 24 percent of electrical power generation was produced by renewables by the end of 2016. This share will again jump as 85 gigawatts of new solar capacity and 68 gigawatts of new wind are expected to be added during 2017. As a result, total renewable generation is now set to outpace global coal generation in relatively short order.

Such rapid adds in renewable capacity are being fed in part by expanding solar production around the world and, particularly, in China. During late 2016, solar manufacturing capacity in China had expanded to 77.4 GW per year — with more on the way. And even as production capacity continues to grow in China and across Southeast Asia, places like the U.S. (with Tesla’s Buffalo Gigafactory 2 alone expected to eventually pump out 10 GW of new solar cells each year), Canada, Turkey, Korea, and Mexico are also rapidly expanding the production pipeline. Meanwhile, the global wind production pipeline continues to make significant gains.

(By 2020, global wind and solar generating capacity is expected to roughly double. Rapid growth in renewable energy is a necessary mitigation for harms resulting from human-forced climate change. Image source. FIPowerWeb.)

The rapid additions to renewable energy capacity provide hope that the world will soon start to see falling carbon emissions overall. Such an event is key to reducing harm already coming down the pipe due to human-forced climate change as global temperatures begin to challenge the 1.5 C threshold during the next two decades and as CO2e (including CO2 and all other greenhouse gasses) levels threaten to cross the critical 550 ppm demarcation line.

The strong progress of renewables does not come without a number of concerning difficulties and challenges. These challenges are primarily political — with Trump’s backing away from Paris threatening to upset the emissions reductions apple cart and Suniva’s recent ITC challenge injecting uncertainty into the U.S. solar energy market. Meanwhile, fossil fuel based industry backers continue various attempts to sand-bag or, worse, reverse renewable energy growth.

Despite these various difficulties, renewables like wind and solar will likely continue to gain ground as markets expand, technology and efficiency continue to improve, and as states, nations and industries jockey to claim their own share of the growing renewable energy market windfall. The big question that should concern pretty much everyone, however, is will this expansion in renewables proceed fast enough to afford the world a much-needed chance to slake an extraordinary amount of climate change related damage that’s now moving rapidly down the pipe in our direction.

Western Fuels Association's Decades Of Dollars For Climate Science Doubt And Denial
By John Mashey • Friday, June 23, 2017 -

Alpha Natural Resources, Arch Coal and Peabody Energy have filed bankruptcies, incidentially revealing payments to cllimate anti-science groups. The Western Fuels Association (WFA) may be smaller and less known, but its long history of funding climate denial is already better exposed. It was called out by Senator Tom Udall in his #WebOfDenial remarks in July 2016. Its earliest well-known disinformation effort is detailed in MedievalDeception 1991: Lindzen Hijacks Curve For Western Fuels Video - Early Fake News.

Its front group Greening Earth Society (GES) claimed “sound information” following the “sound science” theme of The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition (TASSC), started as front for Philip Morris in 1993, but like WFA, also involved Pat Michaels.

Newly-assembled information adds evidence that #WesternFuelsKnew the science was against them, decades ago.

Ross Gelbspan began writing about WFA in the mid-1990s. DeSmog offers a detailed profile (read first!), which includes WFA Annual Reports for 2005 and 2014/2015. Recent searches found the 1998-2003 reports, attached and annotated here, with a few especially instructive quotes, plus a few key events from other sources.

Annual Reports
1998 - The CO2 Issue 1996,1997 financials, and $583K was a substantial fraction of its non-coal costs

p.6 'We lost $583,000 in 1997, even though coal deliveries were substantially over 20 million tons.
1997's red ink was not due to adverse operational performance either in coal deliveries or by management. …
On an ongoing basis, Western Fuels is operating substantially “in the black.”
Our half-million dollar shortfall is due entirely to our advocacy in the area of climate change. The Board of Directors continues to provide financial support to programs designed to turn back efforts by the Clinton Administration to dial-out coalfired generation in the US energy supply mix.' (advocacy, not science)

p.7 'It is not that the science associated with the vision of apocalypse is uncertain. It simply is wrong.
Western Fuels' ongoing activity, including our creation of Greening Earth Society (described elsewhere in this report), is designed to convince Americans that warm is good, cold is bad; using more fossil fuels benefits everyone; and by using fossil fuels, conditions are being created on earth for humans to grow, both in numbers and living standards.' (strawman, but at least clear statement that the goal is convincing Americans, i.e., PR)

1999 Coal Fired Electricity Energizes the U.S. Economy 1998 financials

p.10 'The global-climate-change issue is about the wisdom of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide: a greenhouse gas, primary nutrient for plant life, and unavoidable consequence of humans using fossil fuels.
Western Fuels’ advocacy since 1988 reflects our understanding of this fundamental fact. (1988 important)
Coal is king among fossil fuels in terms of its generation of CO2 per unit of energy output …' (false)

p.15 'Our advocacy work was robust last year. … GES itself had an excellent first year. We premiered The Greening of Planet Earth Continues: The Promise for the 21st Century and Beyond at the Basin Electric annual meeting last November. It was very well received and many people believe it is superior to our earlier video,
The Greening of Planet Earth. … While Big Media and Big Government give no credence to either “Greening” video,
the science they depict has the advantage of being right. (false)

2000 Fuel for Thought - Transforming the debate over coal-fired electricity 1999 financials. The best to study.

p.5 '… we have continued our steadfast opposition to this jihad against CO2 and coal-fired electricity, and we will continue to do so. Our financial performance during the past year reflects this effort. Once again, our advocacy work has left us with a deficit for the year. … Western Fuels remains in a position to continue vigorous pursuit of our advocacy activity. This is particularly true because we continue to receive more and more support (financial and otherwise) from other industry participants. (inquiring minds might ask: who else paid?)

p.7 'Additionally, our early and effective advocacy work with respect to the benefits of cheap electricity through the work of Mark Mills, and now David Wojick, likewise has paid off. '

p.10 'Since Earth Day 1998, Western Fuels Association’s climate change advocacy has been rooted in Greening Earth Society… bi-weekly World Climate Report Online, … a host of studies by the ASU Climate Data Task Force. Together with The Heartland Institute, we now publish World Climate Report’s content in the monthly tabloid Environment & Climate News. Circulation is more than 40,000 nationwide. Pat Michaels, Bob Balling, Sallie Baliunas, and other scientists working under contract with New Hope Environmental Services increase their influence on public and political dialogue.' (ASU = Robert Balling)

p.11 'Mark Mills has worked with us for many years… Mark’s work has been featured in Forbes Magazine and has atracted the attention of high-tech futurist George Gilder.'
(GIlder was cofounder of the Discovery Institute (creationism) ; “men superior to women in work environment,” and seemed to to think Art Robinson and his son Noah great climate scientists watch first 2 minutes of this video. He also suggested that the Wall Street Journal seek a climate OpEd from the Robinsons.)

p.12 'Where does our advocacy stand, today? Based on work by our newest science advisor John Daly concerning the fatal flaws of the ground-based temperature record and revelations concerning agreement among ground-based thermometers, instruments onboard satellites, and carried aloft by weather balloons, Western Fuels is now prepared to argue that no reliable record exists to show a warming globe, and second, to establish the lack of warming, apocalyptic or otherwise.' (Tasmanian resident John Daly was not a scientist of any kind, but mostly known for his blog Still Waiting For Greenhouse, which was well debunked by scientist John Robert Hunter.
Daly's blog was filled with cherry-picking errors, and an important step in this MedievalDeception series. )

2001 WF/BW AR/00 2000 financials

p.2 'As a result of our steadfast advocacy of sound science and cheap electricity, we had been a target of derision and scornful attacks by environmental groups. While we do not rejoice in California’s woe, the situation presents a wake-up call for the energy sector. The science that Western Fuels has helped research and promote in the “global warming debate” has made important impacts on national energy policy. …'

p.3 'We maintain a presence in Washington, DC, as concern for energy moves from far down in the hierarchy of consumer and political concerns to the very top, even as we broaden the scope of our climate change advocacy through management of the Greening Earth Society.'

2002 Racing to Meet Demand 2001 financials

p.4 'and Western Fuels Association’s continued investment in climate change advocacy in 2001.'

p.12 'There is now bi-partisan opposition to designating carbon dioxide as a pollutant, and there is growing awareness of coal as an abundant, reliable, and increasingly clean energy resource. …
Western Fuels sustains its financial commitment to the Greening Earth Society and challenges the popular belief that carbon dioxide emissions will lead to catastrophic changes in earth’s climate. At the same time we
are staying in front of the issues by exploring with others in the coal-chain industry voluntary programs to sequester additional carbon in forests, croplands, and grazing lands.' (strawman, then “exploring”)

2003 Securing Your Energy Future 2002 financials

p.3 'Even that is not good enough for some in Congress who also insist on limits to carbon dioxide emissions….
As concerns carbon dioxide, we have loaned an executive to the Center for Energy and Economic Development to help CEED pursue a carbon sequestration initiative in behalf of the coal producers, utilities, and railroads that comprise its membership. The initiative encourages changes in agriculture practices and the management of forests and grasslands to sequester carbon. …
We also continue financial support of the climate change advocacy work of the Greening Earth Society.'

2006 Western Fuels Association Annual Report financials for 2004, 2005 (no mention of GES, advocacy, CO2, etc)

2015 Western Fuels Association Annual Report 2014/2015 2014 financials

p.7 'Over 1.1 million comments were filed opposing the EPA GHG proposals through www.tellEPA.com and www. Action.coop. Coal states are refusing to comply. County commissioners and state legislators are becoming engaged and writing comments supporting coal issues. Friends of Coal chapters and support rallies are being organized in the West. As a result, a 2015 poll of national concerns shows that climate change is ranked #22 in priority out of 23 issues.8 Such polls are allowing legislators to question and try to rescind or reign in regulatory overreach by the EPA and OSM, block funding for their implementation, and investigate the lucrative “sue-and-settle” industry.

Current benefits of carbon use to the economy and society overwhelmingly outweigh costs by 50-to-1 to 500- to-19 including increased quality and quantity of foods, for example. Carbon based fuels have raised the standard of living worldwide, increased lifespans by decades, and have elevated over a billion people out of poverty in the past 20 years. Western Fuels supports publicizing, indeed celebrating, the social benefits of carbon…benefits which far outweigh the social cost of carbon touted by environmental groups.'
'9 Management Information Services, Inc. (December 2013) for American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, The Social Costs of Carbon? No, The Social Benefits of Carbon.'
(That report is by Roger Bezdek, who testified for Peabody in 2015 Minnesota Social Cost of Carbon Case. Jud

AMERICAN PATRIOT: INSIDE THE ARMED UPRISING AGAINST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Charges for FBI Agent Renew Scrutiny of Elite Team

JUNE 29, 2017 /
When the FBI finally defused the armed occupation of a wildlife refuge in Oregon last year, the agency largely viewed the effort as a success. One of the occupation leaders had been killed by law enforcement, but a situation that threatened to become far more deadly had ended relatively peacefully.

But the operation has now come under increased scrutiny, with the indictment made public this week of an FBI agent for lying and obstructing justice.

The indictment says that the agent, W. Joseph Astarita, a member of the FBI’s hostage rescue team, lied about firing two shots at Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, one of the occupation’s leaders, after he drove his truck toward a roadblock set up by the FBI and Oregon State Police. Finicum was ultimately killed by the state police.

Sound-Cannon Case Heralds E-Transparency for NYPD

June 30, 2017

In this 2004 photo, an officer with the New York City Police Department stands atop the hood of a vehicle equipped with a Long Range Acoustic Device used for crowd control at the Republican National Convention that year. (Photo by Peter Bergin via Wikipedia)
MANHATTAN (CN) — To learn how the New York City Police Department deploys sound cannons, the average citizen should simply be able to fire off an email under the state’s Freedom of Information Law.

That’s the conviction that guided Keegan Stephan to sue the NYPD last year for details about its use of crowd-control weapons known as LRADs, short for Long Range Acoustic Devices.

A politically active student at Yeshiva University’s Cardozo Law School, Stephan brought a federal civil rights lawsuit last year with five others, challenging how police use these devices.

The deal Stephan reached on his own Thursday with the NYPD, however, could have much broader implications for police accountability.

“NYPD will accept FOIL requests sent to the designated e-mail address, which is currently FOIL@NYPD.ORG,” the 15-page settlement states. “NYPD will also accept any follow-up correspondence regarding pending FOIL requests by e-mail if it is identified by the FOIL Unit file number.”

To the average New Yorker, these two sentences might not mean much, but Stephan believes the commitment could spell a new era of transparency for journalists, open-government activists and concerned citizens.

“Being forced to print, scan, and physically mail documents has derailed countless Freedom of Information requests upon the NYPD by myself and others,” Stephan said in a statement. “I’m thrilled with the outcome of this settlement, which I hope will empower the public to make the NYPD more transparent and accountable.”

In Stephan’s other sound-cannon case, he is part of a group of activists, journalists and filmmakers who all claim to have suffered hearing damage after police deployed the weapon indiscriminately at a Black Lives Matter protest in December 2014, two days after a grand jury declined to indict the police officer who killed Eric Garner.

Standing with their attorney on June 1, 2017, a group of journalists gathered outside the courthouse where they are suing police over their use of sound cannons as a method of crowd control. A federal judge in Manhattan refused to dismiss their case a day earlier.
U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet advanced assault and excessive-force allegations in this case on May 31.

As the challengers slog through the discovery, Thursday’s settlement gives evidence collection a shot in the arm. The NYPD must provide recordings of police communications from the days of the protests, charts depicting the use of LRADs, and training materials and emails related to the devices.

Elena Cohen, an attorney with the National Lawyers Guild who represents Stephan in both the open-records case and the civil-rights action, said the settlement will update and democratize the NYPD’s once-analog practices.

“This settlement makes requesting public documents more accessible and affordable for the public, recognizing that our right to be aware of governmental actions should not be thwarted by shrouding it with the cloak of secrecy or confidentiality- or the needless expense and time of paper mailing in our digital age,” Cohen said in a statement.

The NYPD has 90 days to update its website with the new protocols. A spokesman for the city declined to comment on Stephan’s settlement.

Police nationwide shot and killed 492 people in the first six months of this year, a number nearly identical to the count for the same period in each of the prior two years.

Fatal shootings by police in 2017 have so closely tracked last year’s numbers that on June 16, the tally was the same. While the number of unarmed people killed by police dropped slightly, the overall pace for 2017 through Friday was on track to approach 1,000 killed for a third year in row.

The Washington Post began tracking all fatal shootings by on-duty police in 2015 after the 2014 shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, of Michael Brown, who was unarmed and had an altercation with the officer who shot him.

The ongoing Post project has documented twice as many shootings by police in 2015 and 2016 as ever recorded in a single year by the FBI’s tracking of such shootings, a pattern that is emerging again in 2017.

Since Brown’s killing in Ferguson, other fatal shootings by police, many captured on video, have fueled protests and calls for reform. Some police chiefs have taken steps in their departments to reduce the number of fatal encounters, yet the overall numbers remain unchanged.

Academics who study shootings give weight to The Post’s accounting.

“These numbers show us that officer-involved shootings are constant over time,” said Geoffrey Alpert, a criminologist at the University of South Carolina who has studied police use of force. “Some places go up, some go down, but it’s averaging out. This is our society in the 21st century.”

As in previous years, the data gathered by The Post showed that police most frequently killed white males who were armed with guns or other weapons. One in four people killed this year were mentally ill. And police have continued to shoot and kill a disproportionately large number of black males, who account for nearly a quarter of the deaths, yet are only 6 percent of the nation’s

Hillsborough: Holding the Police to Account

“It is also a story of deceit and lies, of institutional defensiveness defeating truth and justice. It is evidence of a culture of denial within South Yorkshire Police.”

— Anne Burkett, BBC, Apr 27, 2016

It took 28 years for the tables to turn on the South Yorkshire police regarding the Hillsborough disaster that took the lives of 96 fans. The 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest saw a sporting catastrophe that was portrayed as less a matter of institutional accountability as the consequence of loutish, irresponsible fans.

The finger pointing began instantly, with the police arguing that the bad behaviour of the fans, fuelled by alcohol consumption, was the primary cause. (This, notwithstanding the fact that some of the injured and dead were children.)

There were, in fact, no limits as to what the fans had done wrong. They supposedly arrived too late; they obstructed the police in accomplishing their tasks; they forced open a gate; many were supposedly ticketless. What mattered in the police narrative and technique was not safety but control.[1]

The ground was laid after the finding by inquest jurors in April 2016 that the fans in question had been unlawfully killed. It had been the longest jury case in British legal history, involving the families and supporters of the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) and Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

Interest naturally turned towards police conduct not merely on the day itself, but subsequently. The latter point was of particular interest to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which was charged with the task of investigating allegations of a cover-up.

On Wednesday, six people, including two former senior police officers, were charged for criminal offences linked to the disaster. Significant here was the alleged cover-up that ensued. Sue Hemming of the Crown Prosecution Service’s head of special crime and counter-terrorism, after reviewing the material, “decided that there is sufficient evidence to charge six individuals with criminal offences.”

Prominently featured is David Duckenfield, the South Yorkshire officer who oversaw policing at the semi-final, charged for the manslaughter of 95 people. (The 96th, Tony Bland, would only die four years after the incident, making a charge of manslaughter inapplicable.) He had eluded the clutches of a private prosecution in 1999 with a stay by the senior judicial officer. For a prosecution to take place, that stay will have to be lifted by application from the prosecutors.

Duckenfield, the grim star of a very grim show, received specific mention from Hemming. During proceedings, the CPS intends to show that Duckenfield’s conduct that day was “extraordinarily bad and contributed substantially to the deaths of each of those 96 people who so tragically and unnecessarily lost their lives.”[2]

The focus on Sir Norman Bettison, former chief constable of Merseyside and West Yorkshire police, an inspector in the South Yorkshire force during the disaster, was one of misconduct. He faces four counts of the offence in public office.

“Given his role as a senior police officer,” stated Hemming, “we will ask the jury to find that this was misconduct of such a degree as to amount to an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder.”

Donald Denton and Alan Foster, both former police chiefs, were charged with perverting the course of justice in allegedly fiddling witness statements used during the original investigation and inquest into the deaths. Dozens of such statements were allegedly doctored to suggest a picture of police control rather than lethal chaos. The police lawyer, Peter Metcalf, was charged for allegedly assisting the enterprise.

Completing the institutional circle is Graham Mackrell, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club’s company secretary and safety officer that day. His charges are less grave, but no less significant: the alleged contravention of safety rules and failing to take appropriate reasonable care for the health and safety of those on the grounds.

This is the season for a reckoning. The charred ruins of Grenfell Tower have drawn necessary accusations about public safety across London. The cult of the cheap and expedient is being challenged; the wisdom of authorities questioned.

The Hillsborough families proved relentless in seeking accountability for the losses of 1989, showing that doing things by the book in calmly directed rage transformed the alleged responsibility of the victims to accountability of the authorities. It is with some historical irony, given the state of Brexit, that these efforts would been further hampered but for the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights via the Human Rights Act 1998.
