Time machine

Postby friend catcher » Thu Jun 08, 2006 10:08 am

I would use it a lot. Back to London of the 16th century and find the Globe Theatre; " eh ,William about this Prince of Denmark play, I've got a couple of questions" Then off to Sarajevo in 1914 where I could suggest the Archduke might like to take an alternative route to the palace., although as with the 'Ides of March' the advice would be ignored.Maybe soothsayers are fatalistic time travellers
In a particularly black mood maybe a visit to pre history and I could stamp on the first flatworm that crawled out of the primordial soup. Thank the gods we have no such machine.

RE Candle On A Stick Hoax

Postby Quentin Quire » Fri Jun 09, 2006 12:10 pm

I'm not too sure what the 'candle-on-a-stick' hoax is and I'm fairly well read on ufology. Perhaps, rather than cranking them out on a hand press, Hans, Sophie and the rest would have spammed Hitler Youth forums from cyber cafes across southern Germany. That is, if they had first evaded the Gestapo's Carnivore, sifting every email and seemingly anonymous web comment for anti-Fuhrer sentiment. (A headline today: "Pentagon sets its sights on social networking websites".)

Freedom of expression is often regarded as America's distinguishing liberty. "That's what's great about this country and all free countries: freedom of speech," Neil Young told CNN six weeks ago. "That's what makes us different from everybody else." Though it's suffered multiple paper cuts from the Patriot Act, it's still the go-to characteristic for those who choke on Nazi analogies. (Bush isn't Hitler, runs the argument, because you have the right to call him Hitler.) But it's also the cheapest freedom rulers can afford, when popular expression is cut off from the means of effecting popular change. Nothing is risked by allowing people to say what they feel, so long as it's understood they cannot act upon it outside of the unresponsive and compromised political system. But when the elections are rigged, and most politicians of prominence are beholden to the same security apparatus, what do you do then?

America is a free-speech zone, and Americans remain fenced within it so long as they mistake risk-averse expression with direct yet non-violent action. It's the difference between shouting slogans on a sunny afternoon and Tiananmen Square. And so much of the ineffectual sloganeering now takes place only in the cocooned and virtual America, where the empire obligingly hosts its chat rooms of dissent for political deviants. It has no worries, so long as everyone keeps talking.

I don't think I like paperless revolutions anymore. It seems the more sophisticated our means of communication, the more illusory our ownership of the media, and the greater the disconnect between our words and our words' implications. Under the Nazis, hand-cranking the press in the basement took courage. Under the NSA, posting online may take nothing more than naivité.

By the way, I'm still trying to get Blogger to address my broglem of the non-updating home page, though I'm increasingly pessimistic. So I'm beginning to consider alternatives. In the event Blogger is finished with me, I've registered rigorousintution.ca, and am starting to scout about for hosts and publishing options. (WordPress or Movable Type?) If I move - and I'd rather not, because the thought gives me a sick headache - I would want to leave this blog standing as an additional archive, but copy everything over, including comments. (I'd also like to consolidate the discussion board, bringing over the posts into a php forum.) I've received some good tips already, and would be happy for more. And thanks for your patience.

The Revolution Will Not Be Webcast

Edited by: Rigorous Intuition at: 6/9/06 12:52 pm

hey jeff can u edit your freewheelin' post and tell whats going on for people? i have a feeling a bunch of people check the site to see what you've written and see the freewheelin post and scoot off. and maybe this accounts for why so few people seem to talk in the forum the last few days.

hope it works.
___________________________________________
"BUSHCO aren't incompetent...they are COMPLICIT." -Me

"Speaking the Truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act" -George Orwell

Hi Jeff

Yes, move to another site. This has happened to other left leaning websites [I believe it happened to 'whatreallyhappened.com and 'Another Day in the Empire']. It's a sign that the oppressors have entered a new phase. As Gandhi said:

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

IMO, we're at the stage now when they've stopped ignoring us, laughing and belittling didn't work, so now they've decided to 'fight' us and of course, true to type, it's taken the form of cowardly sabotage...instead of reasoned argument.

They have no reasoned argument so they can only use underhanded and flathanded means of keeping us in line.

I hope you move and soon, so we can pick up where we left off...as I'm sure we will.

Regards,

GC

Jeff, I'm still waiting to hear back from my guy; not sure why he hasn't gotten back to me. It's possible he's out of town as I haven't seen him in the usual places, so hopefully I'll have news for you here soon.

cheers,
D

Re: images won't load

Postby Wolfmoon Lady » Sun Jun 11, 2006 1:07 pm

Hmmm. Since Jeff began posting his blog on this thread, the photobucket images have slowed my server to a crawl. Today, the photos are refusing to load at all. None of the images are showing up, including the RI Forum wallpaper. WEIRD. I've cleared my cache, etc., and restarted my computer. I don't think my spyware programs are blocking it. Could Photobucket be part of the problem, as well? I wonder.

This is what I'm getting:

"Downloading picture <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/JeffWells/ri-banner.gif"">img.photobucket.com/album...anner.gif"

It just hangs there and eventually gives up. Blank background.

Hoping Jeff finds a solution to both Blogger and EZBoard. I don't trust either. Too much valuable info is in their hands.

BTW: To those who keep losing posts because of EZBoard - my advice is to write your response into Notepad and then cut and paste it. Or keep Notepad open and copy your post before you hit "Add Reply." That way, if EZ board eats it, you have your original and can repost it. I've begun archiving tons of stuff on CDRW. I don't trust virtual storage anymore.

Cheers to all.

Re: images won't load

Postby havanagilla » Sun Jun 11, 2006 2:55 pm

aside, my internet connection was gone for the entire weekend (that's after the bizarre hacking into the modem...). Company was here today, saying that the frequency was too low in the cable (but my phone that works on the very same line/cable - was fully operative). I was trying to figure it out with my very limited know how. Apparently, there's a new hobby for those who disturb connections and that's to be able to mess with the frequency, something that was not familiar before. This has also happened to several people connected to ADSL, reporting bizarre disturbance ONLY to the freqency of the internet, along the same infrastructure, and this might be done "on remote", and perhaps even via the internet.
--
Not sure this is related, but if this is some sort of novel sabotage, the bloggers tech staff might just not be familiar with it, or they percieve it as a threat to the entire website, in which case they will "lose" the problem for the benefit of the whole. (again, most probably this is very much a MidEastern thinking, and this condition here is probably a regular tech problem soon to be overcome).
--
On another level, a fellow blogger here in Israel has had a struggle with her commercial bloghost over "liable" issues, when she named a psychologist (well connected one) as an abuser of her, or some form of harassment anyway. it seems that half her blog was erased somehow, eventually she was fed up with this situation and opened a new blog in her domain with wordpress, but she is still a bit paranoid so she locked the comments area, until she figures how someone from outside can enter her blog and erase parts without permission. Today she emails me that she found out that one of the perp psychologist's buddy is a veteran of a top secret intel computers unit, who is a prime suspect of the sabotage. namely, he is just "helping out a friend in need". so, things happen all over.

--
I have had numerous problems, ranging from hacking, to stalking via the backtalks and what not. its a jungle out there.
the providers are taking a commercial "neutral " stance, namely, they throw the victims to the dogs. they have no interest to become "police", and they are mostly concerned with their business flowing smoothly as possible. This was my cable provider's response to my requests to investigate these last two hackings into their hardware, they said, no way. they don't mind replacing the stuff, but they will not get into the matter and even try to trace the intruders.
