Miselis was clearly prepared for the unrest in Berkeley in the spring of 2017. At the Trump rally he wore protective goggles to ward off pepper spray or tear gas, taped his hands up like a boxer, and wore a gray active-wear uniform, as did several other RAM members that day. In video footage reviewed by ProPublica and FRONTLINE, Miselis can be seen fighting alongside other RAM members.

The event turned into a multi-hour street battle pitting Trump supporters, including fascists and extreme-right activists, against counter-protesters, some of them militant anti-fascists. Police made 20 arrests, confiscating knives, pepper spray, a stun gun, an axe-handle and many wooden dowel rods, which were used as clubs by participants. At least seven people were transported to the hospital for their injuries. Rundo, RAM’s founder, was arrested and detained for assault on a police officer, but Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley declined to file charges. “We determined we didn’t have enough evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Teresa Drenick, an Alameda County deputy district attorney.

After the Berkeley rally, Miselis traveled across the country to take part in the massive white supremacist convergence in Charlottesville, where his activities were photographed and recorded on video, both by professional journalists and other people equipped with smart phones. At the rally on Aug. 12, pictures taken by photojournalist Jason Andrew show Miselis walking alongside two other RAM members previously identified by ProPublica, Tom Gillen and Ben Daley.

At roughly 10 a.m., Miselis and the other RAM members confronted counter-protesters a few steps away from Emancipation Park, where white supremacists had gathered beneath a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Daley attacked two female counter-protesters, kicking and punching them, a scene captured in video obtained by ProPublica and FRONTLINE. He wrapped both hands around the throat of one woman, throttling her until she fell to the ground, blood seeping from a gash on her temple. The other woman emerged from the incident with a laceration across her forehead. On video, she screams as blood drips across her face.

Miselis jumped into the fracas. In addition to FRONTLINE and ProPublica, National Geographic produced video documenting the brawl.

A sequence of pictures shot by photojournalist Edu Bayer, who was on assignment for The New York Times, show Miselis hurling what appears to be a can of soda at a counter-protesters. In one photo he flexes his biceps muscles in celebration.

It’s this sort of street combat that worries the SPLC’s Hankes. In his view, such brazen criminal activity should be a red flag for both Northrop Grumman and the Pentagon.

“I can’t believe that participation in an organized white supremacist group focused on street-level violence wouldn’t jeopardize your security clearance,” Hankes said.

In Portland, Patriot Prayer & Proud Boys Want Immigrants Heads “Smashed Into the Concrete;” Gave Nazi Salutes While Screaming Racial Slurs

Image

On June 26th, Joey Gibson, a Republican running for a Washington State Senate seat and leader of Patriot Prayer, a big tent far-Right group, took to Facebook to describe the goals for his latest protest rally that was scheduled to take place in Portland, Oregon.

Writing ominously, Joey very clearly spelled out the violence that was to come:

[T]he stench-covered and liberal-occupied streets of Portland will be CLEANSED.

CLEANSED, I say.

The streets will be flowing with freedom, and the air will be filled with patriotism. And fear will have no place in our midst…Recourse will be swift, for those who wish to oppress our freedoms…And the hands of Justice shall smite them with a vengeance heretofore unknown to these ne’er-do-wells. Join me, Patriots…let the memories and struggles of our Founding Fathers not be in vain.

Gibson, who claims God talks to him regularly, had a lot riding on this demonstration. In the media during the roll out announcement of his Senate campaign, he had stated that he was done with organizing far-Right political rallies, known for attracting antifascist opposition, but also members of the Alt-Right and various neo-Nazi groups. Perhaps his most famous former rally attendee was Jeremy Christian, who went on to murder two people on a Portland train in 2017 while narrowly failing to kill another, after harassing two young black women with racist and Islamophobic remarks. Christian was seen at a Patriot Prayer march not long before the murders in June giving out Nazi salutes like they were candy on Halloween, and to this day, many that attend Patriot Prayer events refuse to condemn his actions – much as they contend that Unite the Right in Charlottesville was a “false flag.”

...While Gibson went out of his way in the media to distance himself from Christian, he still continued to pose in photos with neo-Nazis from groups such as Identity Evropa. In fact, one of his lieutenants, Tiny Toese, even called IE organizer Jake Van Ott on the phone once to tell him:

“Tiny reached out to me and called me up over Facebook and said, ‘You know, I support [IE] and what you do,” Von Ott said.

Von Ott added that Toese told him IE members were “the only people that actually were up front the entire time along with the Street Preachers. The Oath Keepers just sat back—in his words—with their fancy gear and stayed in the back the whole time.”

This mirrors Gibson’s support and close relationship to the uber-reactionary, homophobic, and racist group the “Hell Shacking Street Preachers,” best know for mimicking the idiots at “God Hates Fags” with their hateful banners and both physical and verbal attacks. And despite Gibson stating on his campaign website that he supports Gay Marriage, he has in the past attended PRIDE events along with the Street Preachers in order to harass and attack queer and trans people. Unsurprisingly, some within the Hate Preachers group, openly identify as white nationalists.

Next on the White Power Chopping Block: Kyle “Based Stickman” Chapman
July 7, 2018 Idavox

Image
Kyle Chapman getting arrested on March 4, 2017

When DOESN’T this guy get arrested? And although it presumably won’t happen this time since he is being held without bail, how the hell does he keep getting out in the first place?

Kyle Chapman, who has made a name for himself participating in rallies last year in Berkeley, California can add yet another assault arrest to his ever-growing rap sheet, this one stemming from a Texas bar fight a year ago.

According to the East Bay Express, Chapman was arrested in Oakland on July 3 and is being held in Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on charges that on July 1, 2017 he got into an altercation with a bar patron at the Dirty Dog Bar, in Austin, Texas, punching him and hitting him across the face with a wooden bar stool. Witnesses told police Chapman was shoving people in a mosh pit in an attempt to instigate a fight, and video from that evening supports those accounts.

Chapman has been nicknamed “Based Stickman” after videos in March 2017 showed him attacking antifascists with a cane during protests there, which resulted in one of his many arrests in the past few years, and has traveled the country promoting himself and his group the Fraternal Order of the Alt-Knights, an organization within the neo-Fascist group the Proud Boys. He was in Austin to speak at a pro-Trump rally earlier in the day where among other things marchers chanted “Death to Soros,” in reference to the billionaire businessman conservatives have devised various conspiracy theories citing him as a puppet master creating opposition to them.

https://youtu.be/CuVjYpiEhzI

The Smoking Gun website notes that Chapman, 42, is “a thrice-convicted felon who has served three separate prison terms, jumped bail, twice violated parole, used cocaine, LSD, and meth, and was described by his own lawyer as having ‘severe psychological problems,'” Chapman was charged in August on suspicion of felony possession of carrying a leaded cane or billy club during a Berkeley rally in March, 2017, and was sent back to jail in December for violating the conditions of his bail after his arrest earlier that month on charges of operating a motor vehicle off of designated roads at a federal park in San Francisco revealed him to be in possession of a Kubotan, a self-defense keychain weapon, a weapon he boasted about having in a Facebook video months earlier, saying, “”This is what I carry on my keychain, guys. Antifa, just so you know. Very fuckin’ deadly.” A judge increased his bail and he was eventually released, but in March, a Travis County, TX judge issued a warrant for Chapman’s arrest in following an investigation of the bar fight, making Chapman a fugitive from justice.

Chapman is currently being held without bail with this latest charge.

Not quite sure it works like this in real life

Andrew Anglin of the Daily Stormer isn’t just some dude who spews out seemingly dozens of posts a day for his rancid neo-Nazi website; he also fancies himself a bit of a self-help guru, regularly offering his male readers (and they’re almost all male) advice on how to live their best lives.

Sex and gender diversity is growing across the US

What the rising statistics likely reveal is that thanks to activists and their allies across various movements, more people, especially millennials, are now aware that people are more complex than male or female. And they are embracing this complexity by not only choosing sex- and gender-diversity for themselves, but by also sharing their life experiences in stories across print media and on television.

Image
New York’s annual gay and lesbian pride parade, 1989. AP/Sergio Florez

Activists are organizing in the streets and fighting in the courtroom for rights. This is not recent news: For example, earlier generations of activists demonstrated against police brutality in the 1960s in what is now known as the Stonewall Riots. But the activism has accelerated and spread.

Pride celebrations seem to be everywhere these days. And in the courtroom, transgender teenager Gavin Grimm is currently in the middle of a lawsuit against his Virginia high school that wouldn’t allow him to use the boy’s bathroom. That suit has raised Grimm’s profile and put him at the “center of the national debate,” according to The Washington Post.

This activism lets the public know there is life beyond male or female.

People now have customizable sex and genders to choose from on everything from Facebook to the dating site OkCupid. On OkCupid, one can identify as male, female, transgender, nonbinary, genderfluid or genderqueer, or choose up to five categories from many other options.

Women wearing “makeup that hints at orgasm” can’t complain that men leer, Intellectual Dark Webber Heather Heying argues

Image

So who’s more toxic: A dude who spends every lunch hour staring at women passing on the street like a hungry lion eyeing a wounded gazelle, or any of these women who take a moment to tell him to “stop staring at me, you creep!”

If we follow the logic set out by Intellectual Dark Webber Heather E. Heying in her recent piece on “toxic femininity” in Quillette, it would be the women. At least if they’re wearing makeup — because makeup “invites” male attention and it’s wrong for women to chastise men who give women the lustful gazes that they’re (supposedly) signaling they crave.

Heyling, a former evolutionary biology professor at Evergreen State College, declares that it’s an “ancient truth” that

[s]traight men will look at beautiful women, especially if those women are a) young and hot and b) actively displaying. Display invites attention.

Apparently, any time a young hottie puts on flattering clothes and a bit of makeup, she’s basically advertising that she’s open for business, sex-wise, much like a female mandrill presenting her swollen red ass to the nearest monkey Chad.

You Can’t Understand White Supremacists Without Looking at Masculinity

Image

These guys believe something has been taken from them that they were entitled to, that they deserved, and it was given to people who don’t deserve it, like immigrants and gay people and women. Joining up is a way to get it back, to restore your masculinity. The white nationalist organizations are fairly explicit in this: “Join us and you feel like a real man. Join your brothers, your comrades. We have a sacred mission to preserve the white race.” All this stuff is designed to say, “I’m retrieving what’s rightfully mine.” The feeling of being emasculated comes from a feeling of entitlement. Entitlement is what fuels the anger and desire to restore what’s “rightfully ours.”

The GOP Is Accusing Abuse Victims of Being Part of the 'Deep State'

Congressman Jim Jordan was accused of ignoring abuse allegations at Ohio State 20 years ago, and the response from his party has been despicable.

Harry Cheadle

Jul 12 2018, 5:08pm

Image
Congressman Matt Gaetz on Lou Dobbs's show.

Before Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan was a leader among far-right House Republicans, he was an assistant coach of the Ohio State men's wrestling team. During that period—from the late 80s to early 90s—the athletic facilities at the since-demolished Larkins Hall reportedly served as a hotbed of furtive sexual activity, including men having sex in stairwells and touching each other in the showers. One former wrestler told the Associated Press that "creepy people" lingered in abundance; another said that he faced "a gauntlet of sexual deviancy" after practice. Worst of all, team doctor Richard Strauss (who killed himself in 2005) allegedly sexually abused many athletes across many sports, groping them during exams, hitting on them, and staring at them while they showered. (Ohio State is investigating these allegations.)

Jordan is not accused of anything like that. Instead, he has been accused by several former wrestlers of knowing about what was going on and failing to act. But even more than the abuse itself, it's how Jordan—and the Republican Party more generally—has responded to the questions about it that has created the deeply disturbing scandal hanging over Congress.

"He knew about it because it was an everyday occurrence,” David Range, the seventh wrestler to speak out publicly against Jordan, told the Washington Post of the abuse. Some former wrestlers have defended Jordan, but even one of those admitted that Strauss's misconduct was so widely known that wrestlers would joke about it in the locker room: "If someone said, ‘Oh, I’ve got to go see Doc Strauss,’ it would be like, ‘Oh, prepare to drop your pants.’” Two wrestlers said that a team member had come to Jordan directly and complained that Strauss tried to pull his pants down when he came to see the doctor for a thumb injury.

If these accounts are true, they paint a portrait of an institution that was failing these young men, an institution that Jordan was a part of. Of course, that does not make him singularly responsible for the wrongs done to them. He was in his 20s when he was an assistant coach at Ohio State, a young man himself, and it's not clear his failure to report the talk he heard would doom his political career. Paul Waldman at the Post suggested that Jordan could have ended the story by saying, "I wish I had understood then what I understand now. I and many other people didn’t take what was happening with that doctor seriously enough."

Instead, Jordan, the far-right Freedom Caucus that he is a part of, and the GOP more broadly have accused the wrestlers who have come forward with harrowing accounts of abuse of lying. House Speaker Paul Ryan, whose office initially said he would wait for the results of the Ohio State investigation, called Jordan “a man of honesty and a man of integrity” on Wednesday while rejecting calls for an ethics investigation into him. "The ethics committee here investigates things that members do while they’re here, not things that happened a couple of decades ago when they weren’t in Congress,” Ryan said.

That argument may make sense, but other Jordan allies have gone much further. On Wednesday, Matt Gaetz, a trollish pro-Trump congressman from Florida, showed up on Lou Dobbs's Fox Business Network and declared, "There are people that have some loose affiliation with the deep state that are out to get Jim Jordan." Improbably, he linked the accusations to Jordan's ongoing work to discredit the FBI investigation into links between the Trump campaign and Russia. "These attacks against him are a direct consequence of the outstanding oversight work that Jim Jordan is doing," Gaetz said to a sympathetic Dobbs. "If Jim Jordan was not after the Department of Justice and the FBI, he would not be dealing with these allegations. They are totally false. I am confident in that to my core."

Who are the Proud Boys, 'western chauvinists' involved in political violence?

Image
Street fighting erupts in Portland, with men in ‘Proud Boys’ uniform to the fore.

As well as items from a growing range of official merchandise, members often wear red Donald Trump caps. Their Fred Perry shirts have a history in subcultures including football hooliganism; black and gold are the colors of anarcho-capitalism, a libertarian ideology which seeks to abolish government in the interest of free markets.

The group’s magazine has published a list of its political commitments, which echo talk-radio style constitutional conservatism and add libertarian touches such as opposition to the war on drugs and an antifeminist veneration of traditional gender roles.

The group thus falls in line with McInnes’s views, which are broadly Trumpist. In Canada, the Globe and Mail summarized his beliefs as: “Libertarian politics, father-knows-best gender roles, closed borders, Islamophobia and something he calls ‘western chauvinism’.”

When someone dares defend themselves, and someone else says ‘Yay’, you say: ‘Well you’re promoting violence'
Gavin McInnes, to the Guardian

McInnes denies that his group is racist, and he and other Proud Boys point to the presence of non-white members. But in Portland on 30 June, a man in Proud Boys colors taunted counter-protesters through a bullhorn. “Illegals,” he said, should have their heads “smashed into the concrete”. Another man marched alongside the group and yelled racist slurs. Other Patriot Prayer rallies at which Proud Boys have been present have drawn members of far-right groups including Cascade Legion and Identity Evropa.

Nordean was briefly apprehended. A Portland police spokesman later said an investigation “remains open and under review”. Nordean found a place in the limelight. He appeared on McInnes’s CRTV show and the Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones played the video of his punch repeatedly. Last Friday, Jones interviewed him.

Regarding counter-protesters, Jones said: “You try to speak to them as humans, they disregard that and use it as weakness. But they do listen to your fist smashing into their face.”

Nordean agreed. Jones asked: “How good did it feel, at least later, when you saw his head hit the pavement?”

Nordean said: “Like Gavin McInnes says, violence isn’t great, but justified violence is amazing.”

McInnes has claimed repeatedly that “fighting solves everything”. In a podcast last May, he said: “You’re not a man until you’ve had the crap beaten out of you [and] beaten the crap out of someone.”

Viral Video Gives Chilling Glimpse into the Right’s Anti-Trans Campaign

An anti-transgender video has gone viral on Facebook. Its chilling thesis is that trans people do not exist, and its 'science' is of the junkiest kind.

JAY MICHAELSON
07.13.18 10:24 PM ET

An anti-transgender video titled “Pediatrician Shuts Down Leftists on Puberty Blockers” has gone viral on Facebook, with over 58 million views to date. It gives a chilling glimpse into the Right’s new campaign against transgender people: that transgender people simply do not exist. (It may also be triggering for some readers, which I write as a caution before clicking on the link.)

In the video, Dr. Michelle Cretella of the “American College of Pediatricians” (ACP) spends five minutes discussing how sex is a biological, genetic fact, and that any attempt to change it is, when it comes to teenagers, a form of child abuse.

There are crucial errors in the video, but its presence and impact should be of great concern to LGBT people and their allies.

The American College of Pediatricians

Its misleading name notwithstanding, the ACP is not a professional organization, but an anti-LGBT conservative advocacy group that has around 200 members.

In contrast, there are over 60,000 members of the mainstream American Academy of Pediatricians, which officially “stands in support of transgender children and adults, and condemns attempts to stigmatize or marginalize them” and has created a detailed guide for caring for trans children.

ACP was founded in 2002 to oppose gay adoption. Since that time, it has taken extreme positions on abortion (life begins at conception; abortion is murder), capital punishment (contrary to all peer-reviewed studies, ACP says it is beneficial), abstinence-only sex education (again, debunked by all scientific studies), ‘reparative’ therapy for gay people (same), and now transgender people.

He saw into my soul, basically: A Jordan Peterson fan meets the master, and it’s all a bit culty

Image
J-Peet, cool dude. Blingee by me.

The lucky fella, calling himself mushroomyakuza, posted his story to the Jordan Peterson subreddit earlier this week. He was thrilled to meet his guru, he wrote, because “he really has had a pretty profound impact on my life. It was humbling.”

Contemplating one’s tininess in the universe is humbling. Meeting some fussbudgety Canadian professor with a popular self-help book and an oversized sense of self-importance shouldn’t be.

He was so courteous and polite to everyone he saw, including my girlfriend. Met her with a big “how are you?” and a sweet grin.

She was probably the only woman in the entire audience.

It was a surreal moment for me, having been a fan for nearly two years when the first video of him at UoT regarding gender pronouns emerged.

Transphobia, the gateway drug to Jordan Petersonism.
