As to why the services acted in apparent concert,

(Brian Feldman of New York magazine makes a persuasive argument that it boils down to Apple’s power: “While Facebook and YouTube and Spotify can all cite hate speech or policy infractions as their reasoning publicly, the unspoken reason is that to not follow Apple’s lead could get their own apps booted from the App Store. Federal law shields platforms from responsibility for what users post; Apple’s policies don’t.”)

Lest we forget that Chuck D and Spike Lee were the subject of many liberal think pieces on Farrakhan, "hate", and even "black racism."

Opinion
If We Silence Hate Speech, Will We Silence Resistance?

“Hate” is a dangerously elastic label. And it has long been used to demonize unpopular expression, particularly among people of color.

Apple, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify and most other major internet distributors took a bold step this week when they all but banned content from Infowars, a website run by the right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The tech companies cited their policies against hate speech for their decision, rather than the trafficking in fake news by Infowars.

It’s tempting to applaud this move, but we should be wary. While Mr. Jones’s rhetoric is certainly repugnant, mounting pressure from the political left to censor hateful speech may have unintended consequences, especially for people of color.
That’s because “hate” is a dangerously elastic label, one that has long been used in America to demonize unpopular expression. If we become overzealous in our efforts to limit so-called hate speech, we run the risk of setting a trap for the very people we’re trying to defend.

History offers countless examples. Consider black nationalists of the 1960s and 1970s. Impatient with the lack of progress for African-Americans after the civil rights movement, leaders like Malcolm X routinely inveighed against white America using inflammatory rhetoric. He had no trouble expressing animosity toward the “white devil,” and he contemplated violent resistance.

Image

That put him in the cross hairs of law enforcement, most notably J. Edgar Hoover’s F.B.I. Of course, the FBI spied on many other so-called black radicals. Under Hoover’s Counterintelligence Program, groups like the Nation of Islam and the Black Panthers were subject to routine surveillance, harassment and even violence. Hoover’s justification? He labeled them hate groups. It was a cynical but effective way to turn the tables, framing them as antagonists in the centuries’ long struggle for racial equality.

Hoover is gone, but the tendency to label black radical organizations as hate groups persists, even among groups with more admirable intentions. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist and hate organizations across the country, makes the dubious claim that nearly 25 percent of the 954 “hate groups” they follow are “black nationalist” groups.

There’s no question that black nationalists often argue for racial separation or that many have engaged in bigotry. But it’s false equivalence to label black nationalists and white supremacists alike as hate groups. Doing so ignores the centuries of racial terror that gave rise to black nationalism, as well as the power imbalance that keeps it alive. And it gives a powerful tool to people who want to silence radical perspectives. They can call these viewpoints hate speech.

Take, as one example, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement, a Palestinian-led initiative that endorses a series of nonviolent measures to end Israel’s systematic oppression of the Palestinians. As it has gained traction in the United States, in large part because of support from prominent African-American intellectuals and organizations, state and federal lawmakers have increasingly tried to shut the movement down by accusing it of hate speech.

The New York State Senate, for example, recently passed a bill that would prohibit from receiving public funds “student organizations that participate in hate speech, including advocating for the boycott, divestment and sanctions of Israel and American allied nations.” Meanwhile, Congress (with support from many Democrats) has been trying to criminalize the movement for years.

If people engaged in a boycott can be silenced, even criminalized, for discriminating against the group they accuse of discrimination, we begin to see how problematic it is to punish “hate” speech. It can devolve into the politics of choosing sides, and that is usually bad news for people who lack political clout to begin with.

Black Lives Matter would know. A movement formed in response to police violence against African-Americans, it has been accused by law enforcement officials, and even some state legislators, of being a hate group, despite the fact that it renounces violence and welcomes allies from all walks of life.

By accusing Black Lives Matter of peddling hate, politicians effectively turned the tables on the movement, allowing lawmakers, in some cases, to strengthen protections for the police. Since 2016, several “Blue Lives Matter” bills have been enacted across the country, many of which seek to add police as a protected class covered by hate crimes laws. Following this logic, Black Lives Matter’s opposition to police brutality is a kind of hate itself, from which the police require additional protection. Yet killings by police officers are increasing while line-of-duty deaths of police officers are decreasing.

It is difficult to imagine a more ridiculous outcome. But it speaks to one of the most serious perils of limiting speech: a measure to protect minority perspectives can instead be used to further marginalize them.

Despite this, a significant number of young Americans, especially young Americans of color, believe that hate speech should be limited by the government or on college campuses. In addition, some scholars have recently argued for legal restrictions on hate speech.

But how would stronger limits on hate speech affect progressive protests against white supremacy? What would have been the fate, for example, of the historic Million Man March in 1995, an event organized by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan? The Nation of Islam is a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group, and Mr. Farrakhan has openly made anti-Semitic comments for years. At the same time, the March was a landmark effort focused on uniting black men in the face of widespread inequality and racism.

Image

What about the equally historic Women’s March in 2017, after it was revealed that some of the event’s most prominent organizers had ties to Mr. Farrakhan? Or that they openly revered Assata Shakur, a black revolutionary who was convicted (albeit questionably) of killing a police officer and is now on the F.B.I.’s list of most-wanted terrorists? Predictably, they have been accused by some of embracing hate, yet they organized one of the most significant protests in United States history.

If we allowed these voices to be silenced on grounds that they promote hate, we’d find ourselves scrambling to defend the radical poets, musicians, filmmakers and other artists who have pushed the boundaries of expression into what could arguably amount to hate speech, but who have done so from the vanguard of social and political protest.

That almost certainly explains the response from the music industry when Spotify announced its decision to stop promoting artists who engage in hateful speech or conduct. A number of people, including representatives from Kendrick Lamar’s record label, Top Dawg Entertainment, expressed concerns that such a policy would lead to censorship and threatened to pull their music from the service.

Within weeks, Spotify reversed course, noting that its policy was “vague.” But by silencing Mr. Jones on its platform, it’s not exactly clear where Spotify is drawing the line.

And that’s the inherent danger in attempting to limit something like hate. It can be so broadly defined that our efforts to counteract it will be broad, too.

If that happens, we risk silencing the voices and perspectives we can least afford to lose. That’s not a triumph over hate. That’s falling victim to it.

"Yes but". Jones has absolutely not been silenced in any way. His site is still up and he has that radio show or some shit. He is perfectly able to do everything he was doing before, just not on platforms that do not want to be associated with him. I bet I could, if I wanted, dig some bullshit up by Jones and post it to FB or wherever (maybe not) and it wouldn't get censored. I don't know because I won't do it. But his Constitutional right to freedom of speech has not been affected at all.

InfoWars Moves To Ban Alex Jones
Yesterday 10:14am

AUSTIN, TX—Saying that it was a long-overdue step given the radio show host’s history of offensive and dangerous rhetoric, InfoWars reportedly moved Thursday to ban right wing provocateur Alex Jones from its platform. “Mr. Jones has repeatedly violated our policies against hate speech and misinformation, and so we have had no choice but to terminate our relationship with him,” read a statement from InfoWars editor Paul Joseph Watson, citing a litany of abuses committed by the radio host and conspiracy theorist, including harassment of minorities, trans individuals, and the parents of the Sandy Hook victims. “Of course, InfoWars remains committed to free speech, but that does not include repeatedly spreading vicious lies about private individuals. It would be unacceptable, and frankly cowardly, for us to hide behind the First Amendment as this man continues doing real harm. That is why, from today forward, all four of Mr. Jones’s shows will be deleted, and every mention of him will be completely scrubbed from the site.” Watson added that their platform would continue to publish the high-quality reporting on globalism, creeping Sharia, and Deep State false-flag operations that their users had come to expect.

Twitter Suspended Proud Boys And Founder Gavin McInnes Accounts Ahead Of The Unite The Right Rally
The company shut down several accounts associated with the far-right group Friday for violating its terms of service on inciting violence.

Twitter suspended several accounts associated with the Proud Boys, a right-wing group present at last year’s Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, ahead of a similar rally in Washington, DC, this weekend.

The company suspended the group’s main account @ProudBoysUSA, as well as that of its founder Gavin McInnes, for violating its policy on “violent extremist groups.” The company also took down several regional accounts associated with the organization.

“We can confirm that these accounts have been suspended from Twitter and Periscope for violating our policy prohibiting violent extremist groups,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to BuzzFeed News.

The move comes after a week in which Twitter has faced heavy criticism for continuing to allow the accounts of conspiracy site Infowars and its founder Alex Jones, who has promoted various false theories around events including the Sandy Hook shooting. While Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has explained that the company does not believe Jones or Infowars have violated its terms of service, the same cannot be said of the Proud Boys, whose members have taken part in violent rallies across the country, including one last week in Portland.

The account @ProudBoysUSA was previously verified by Twitter, one of a number of right-wing accounts the social media company gave the vaunted blue check.

McInnes, a cofounder of Vice magazine who left the publication in 2008, formed the Proud Boys in 2016; the group gained notoriety for its presence at far-right rallies and vociferous support of President Donald Trump. Its members, who typically appear at events wearing black Fred Perry polo shirts with gold piping, were present at last year’s Charlottesville Unite the Right rally, which devolved into violence and resulted in the death of counterprotester Heather Heyer.

In response, McInnes said, “All this stuff is part of the conservative purge, getting the right off social media, to try to stop Trump from getting reelected. He’s already won; the ship has sailed. I think it will have zero effect on my reach or on the Proud Boys. We’ll always come back.” He also mused about suing Twitter.

Most recently, the Proud Boys were present at a rally that turned violent in Portland. Members claim to be “Western chauvinists” and often use racially charged rhetoric about “anti-white guilt.” They deny connection to the so-called alt-right but speak alongside avowed neo-Nazis at rallies, saying they are defending free speech.

Among the accounts suspended by Twitter on Friday were regional Proud Boys groups such as @ProudBoysOhio, @ProudBoysCA, @Proud_Boys_IL, @ProudBoysVT, @ProudBoysNH, @ProudBoysOR, and @ProudBoysNeb. Others included @ProudBoys1776, @proudboysgirls, @proudboysunite, and @ProudboysCanada, as well as two accounts, @proudboysFOAK and @FOAKUSA, which are associated with the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights, a paramilitary training group within the Proud Boys.

Some Proud Boy–related accounts seemed to escape the suspension. As of 4:25 p.m. Friday, @ProudBoys_CT and @Proud_Louisiana accounts connected to the organization’s groups in Connecticut and Louisiana remained online.

Caroline O'Donovan and Max Woolf contributed reporting to this story.

Thanks for the laugh! Poor "President" Trump!

FOX, Sinclair, Breitbart, the Kochtopus (regardless of the kayfabe battle currently running between the Tweeter Thumbs and the Koch orgs, they were all-in when it counted), various other billionaires who buy air-time for the GOP regime, and many other producers of fascistoid propaganda for Trump, most of whom make Jones look like a retail street peddler, may differ on your assessment.

But have you still not figured it out? Trump's most important media supports, by far, have always been the very same corporate platforms whose employees pose as the "resistance" while focusing attention on Russia and Mueller, rather than attending to the fascistoid-neoliberal reality of GOP, its mirror image within the Democrats, and the reality of present-day America.

The same platforms that Trump condemns as "fake news" made him. Without them, he would have never been anywhere near his present position. Their programming decisions may as well have been tailor-made to assist his evitable rise, platform him without interruption to the tune of billions in free air-time, reinforce the passion of his base, regularly provide the foil for his schoolyard tactics, make him out to be unique and uniquely interesting.

Since the election they have for the most part acted to distract from the worst crimes of the administration and from practical and popular ways to fight the administration. They exist to disempower the people and feed the beast.

This is a functional assessment and indisputable. It doesn't matter what any of the responsible parties think they are doing, or how they identify themselves, or how many bad things they say about Trump the man. It matters what predictable effects their actions have actually had over several years' time. On the business side (the one that counts) these entities are happy to help. CBS and CNN and MSNBC, et al., are your "President" Trump's "media support."

Due to thread proliferation, guess I have to crosspost.

Uncouth language alert!

You are entitled to think the dropping of Jones is some kind of signaling event or prelude to the corporations' asserting control over speech that endangers us all, but I am equally entitled to laugh at the notion. This is merely today's example in an endless string dating back in different forms through all times of the recent historical past. We've never not been in danger, and the events that mattered, that set precedents in the current development, like Steven Salaita or George Ciccarello-Maier or the Youtube adpocalypse, didn't stir up enough attention or outrage (unlike fake shit like "PC Victim #1" and self-help scam artist Jordan Peterson who last week was declared a political prisoner by the exemplary Saudi monarchy).

Sullivan or the 1919-20 red scare that gave birth to the ACLU or Assange and Manning in 2010-11 (and since, most of the time!) are necessary battles. Throw in Zenger for some historical perspective. The cause of Jones is not a hill for anyone other than his patsies to die on, and he and his patsy fans including some sadly on this board can go fuck themselves multiply. His debased schtick makes Father Coughlin look totally respectable. His rotation is lies and crap info, highly destructive and stupid distortions of important issues that he gets to commandeer and shit on for years, poison pills against real opposition, absolutely endless hate speech and incitement for fascism.

The problem is certainly not that privately owned distribution platforms choose to cut this motherfucker out. The problem is that these privately owned distribution platforms are a goddamn monopoly who took over the Internet ages ago and have already been censoring for years whomever they feel like, not just this motherfucker who still has his presumably hundred-million-dollar empire running and can find his alternate distribution and will continue to commit his evil on the world with the assistance of his patsy army.

Thank you Jeffrey St. Clair, even if I'd differ on some nuances:

+ The unplugging of InfoWars from its corporate platforms was a stupid and cynical move to silence a cynical and stupid man after Alex Jones started to hurt their bottom line. As with all forms of censorship, Jones will portray himself as a martyr and probably make even more money. Still, I can’t imagine a true feral journalist like Jean-Paul Marat whimpering that the Bourbon-owned postal service refused to distribute his L’Ami du Peuple rag to the Sans Culottes…

+ Whether the “Left” defended Alex Jones’ fascist theatrics on free speech grounds or wanted to see his mouth firmly muzzled with a red ball gag, we can be certain of one thing: the desires of the “Left” played no role in the decisions of the social media companies to yank his plug.

+ Almost to the day Cockburn died, he referred to CounterPunch as a “Twitter-free Zone,” blissfully unaware that Nat had set up a CP Twitter account a couple years earlier. But Alex understood that relying on FB or Twitter meant that you submitted to their corporate rules & whims not our own.

+ The underground press was underground for a reason. The Left never had any expectation that the titans of capitalism would play fairly with publications whose stated goal was to take them down and put their owners in the tumbrils.

+ The lesson the Left should take from the Jones Affair is that if you’re organizing on Social Media platforms you’re building movement on a trapdoor that will open beneath your feet the moment you become a threat. [FUCK, IT'S TRUE.]

+ I wish Gil Scott-Heron was still around to rap: “The revolution will not be Tweeted.” [IF IT COMES, IT WILL ALSO BE TWEETED, BUT THAT WON'T BE THE MAIN THING.]

I often wonder why on a planet with billions of people, and trillion dollar budgets, people think 2 million clicks are something. Literally 2 million twitch responses, requiring about as much thought as it takes to comment on a youtube video. Or tweet.

"Amassed." Big, inflated spin-word. And the 'dash' before 'YouTube,' like a drumroll. The author really thinks this is amazing. I think he may be in a cultural trance.

Let's say there are two hundred million youtube-watchers in America. Maybe there are more, or less, but since there are a bit over three hundred million people according to census data, I think two hundred is fair, and a nice round number to make a point with:

What the numbers are saying is that about one percent of the population clicked on a youtube video, then clicked subscribe, the equivalent of clicking 'follow' on social media. Notice that clicking 'like' takes as much thought and effort as clicking 'subscribe.'

One percent. Say as many watch, but don't subscribe. Now we're at four million, or two percent of the youtube-watching American public. Two whole percent.

Even if we number the youtube watchers of America at only a hundred million, two million is still under five percent of them.

Of course, this is just America. If we factored in the youtube-watching population of the rest of the world, two million wouldn't even register on the whole-number percent scale.

And yet, two million is apparently a big deal. A number to be proud of. Two million twitch-responses to a video.
Both his words and manner of speech seemed at first totally unfamiliar to me, and yet somehow they stirred memories - as an actor might be stirred by the forgotten lines of some role he had played far away and long ago.

Doesn't matter if it's Demican or Repugnicrat. It's a bit clever how the beast is fed to really keep the focus on just those two smelly parties. Yes, both parties are slimy cesspools. The KISS method: You only need two things to create a polar opposite. Two parties makes is just so much easier for management, even all the while both parties support fascism and chipping away at our liberties. There is just too much noise out there for most to distill it down to the essence of what's really going on. They want you distracted by all the noise.
