Proud Boys Founder: How He Went From Brooklyn Hipster to Far-Right Provocateur

Image
On television and on speaking tours, Gavin McInnes, shown in March 2017, can often sound like a younger and more foul-mouthed President Trump.

“This movement is normal people trying to live their lives getting attacked by mentally ill lunatics,” he said.

But his views are darker when it comes to gender roles and immigration. Mr. McInnes admits that he may be Islamaphobic (“It’s seen as xenophobic to be worried about Islam, but they appear to disproportionately allow intolerance to blossom in their communities,” he said.) He also acknowledged being something of a sexist. (“I’m an Archie Bunker sexist,” he said. “I don’t like Gloria Steinem, but I’d take a bullet for Edith.”)

Though he has repudiated racism and anti-Semitism in some of his writings and speeches, he has also made statements that have openly denigrated nonwhite cultures. Last year, he wrote of white men: “We brought roads and infrastructure to India and they are still using them as toilets. Our criminals built nice roads in Australia but Aboriginals keep using them as a bed.”

Image
The Proud Boys and the 211 Boot Boys used the white power hand symbol as they posed for a photo after the brawl in Manhattan on Friday.

His critics say rhetoric like this echoes strands of white-nationalist philosophy, and that some of his followers have crossed the line at times.

“Their disavowals of bigotry are belied by their actions,” the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization that tracks extremist groups, wrote in an online memo labeling the Proud Boys as a hate group. “Rank-and-file Proud Boys and leaders regularly spout white nationalist memes and maintain affiliations with known extremists. They are known for anti-Muslim and misogynistic rhetoric.”

Women Should Never Lead — According To Aging White Nationalist Men

Image

“And this woman, I mean for God’s sake,” he continued, “I mean first of all women shouldn’t be able to run for office anyway. I mean I certainly wouldn’t want a woman president. And I mean that, I’m not tryin’ to be cute, I think — biblically speaking — if a woman doesn’t have the authority to be in control of a household, if they’re not the head of the household, why would they be the head of our national household, if you will?”

And he was especially opposed to “this [woman] particularly” since she was “a bartender last year” — although Edwards added that he likes “that the Left is going for people like that as opposed to people who are more electorally [sic] in a broad sense of its understanding.”

Canadian white supremacist Paul Fromm said he agreed with Edwards’ point, and recalled that when he was watching the 2016 Democratic National Convention he realized Trump would win. Fromm explained that:

That parade of non-whites — there was a transgender, she, it, or whatever was white — there was the Black Lives Matter, there was the LGBTQ-X-Y-Zed sexually dysfunctional, there were the radical feminists…There was some embittered Pakistani whose — or Afghani — whose son had died in somewhere and who hated Donald Trump. And I thought, “You know, if I’m a working class guy in Pennsylvania, or working class girl in Ohio…and maybe my family’s traditionally voted Democratic — and I look at that collection of freaks, [and] I don’t see anything, anyone up there who looks like me with whom I can relate.” And those were the people who were Democrats, or maybe hadn’t voted very often, who came out for Trump and made the difference.

William Johnson, a corporate lawyer and leader of the white separatist American Freedom Party who endorsed Trump in 2016, remarked that Edwards had “said something that I think is on the cusp of being popular again,” which is that men and women should retreat to their so-called traditional gender roles.

Reading the Classics to Resist Misogyny

By Samuel Argyle
10/18/2018

A cartoon man stands with his left arm slung chummily over the shoulder of an Apollo statue. Apollo’s eyes are turned away from the man, toward something outside of the scene’s parameters. The man, unaware of Apollo’s disinterest, is grinning and pointing with his other hand at a woman on the opposite side of the picture, who is turned away from her onlooker. Her arms are folded, feet together, back straight, ignoring the man and his immobile counterpart. The two stand willfully ignorant of one another’s perspectives.

This is the cover image of Not All Dead White Men, by Silicon Valley-based classicist Donna Zuckerberg. The cover is telling of how the subject of her book — far-right internet bloggers — think about our ever-growing “gynocentric” society. These men feel abandoned, and in their abandonment they grasp for a return to the glory days when men acted uninhibited by women; a time when there was no word for rape, feminism did not exist, and women’s actions were determined by male relatives: the classical periods of ancient Greece and Rome. The woman on the cover might represent, in opposition, feminist students and academics who want to prohibit problematic writings by dead white men that depict misogyny, abuse, and sexual assault. Both sides are discussed in Zuckerberg’s work. And she criticizes both for their decontextualized uses of classical texts.

The bloggers who wield ancient texts as a means to combat feminism call themselves the “manosphere” and “men’s rights activists” (MRA) or men’s human rights advocates (MHRA). They gather on Reddit, specifically the subreddit The Red Pill (TRP), as well as sites like Return of Kings, Chateau Heartiste, and A Voice for Men.

Some describe these men as part of the alternative right or alt-right — a group for which Zuckerberg provides a broad introduction. But while the alt-right’s major focus is “biological race,” specifically white identity or supremacy, this other camp focuses more on gender politics. Oftentimes they are referred to, somewhat disparagingly, as the alt-lite.

Partially because it’s a stumbling block for those in TRP, race appears repeatedly in Zuckerberg’s work. After all, the concept of “biological race” did not exist in ancient Rome or Greece. It’s difficult to relate to the ancient world through race, while through gender, writes Zuckerberg, “the men of the manosphere see their own misogyny reflected back at them, theorized, and celebrated in ancient literature.”

Two of the types of texts most prominently used by these communities, and so most frequently discussed by Zuckerberg, are writings by Stoic philosophers (specifically from the Late Stoa period) and writings by the Roman poet Ovid. Return of Kings writer and founder Daryush Valizadeh (also known as Roosh V) is one of the Stoics’ most dedicated devotees. Valizadeh is a professional pickup artist (PUA) and he claims to base his life on Stoic philosophy, using it as a self-help tool.

But as Zuckerberg points out, there’s an irony here. At least in academia, Stoic philosophy has a reputation as being ardently feminist. “In theory,” Zuckerberg writes, “Stoics believe in an ideal cosmopolis […] where everyone would be an equal citizen regardless of class, ethnicity, or gender. In practice, many of the Stoic writers whose works we still have were highly conventional [not progressive or feminist] in their approach to social issues.” She then points out the overt misogyny within Stoic texts and how easily they can be appropriated by bloggers like Valizadeh. Zuckerberg, though, wants to argue that Stoicism can still benefit women, that not all Stoic writings are misogynistic, and that some Stoic texts have simply been weaponized and decontextualized to serve TRP’s misogyny. Stoicism’s ability to be coopted by both far-right bloggers and feminist classicists indicates just how difficult a task Zuckerberg has set out for herself.

According to Zuckerberg, one way to navigate the inconsistencies that arise during any engagement with both classical texts as well as the contemporary “manosphere” is attention to context. After all, we live in a very different time than classical authors, so classical texts should be from the outset viewed with that in mind. She floods the reader with biographical information of Stoic thinkers, perhaps too much, but to a specific end: she wants the reader to understand that a frame of reference is what contemporary misogynists are missing. Men in TRP pride themselves for being advocates for Western culture and, as Zuckerberg writes, “the Western classics are valued more for being Western and classical than they are for their content.”

Ovid was writing during the reign of Augustus, a time of strict sexual morality. The poet was supposedly exiled for his writings, but still continued to write. This is why the men of the manosphere find him so alluring. Writing was his political resistance, and now it is their own. Of course, our society is different from that of ancient Rome, and Zuckerberg makes plain the absurdity of that comparison. She turns to Nietzsche (also a favorite of many in the alt-right) to explain: in We Classicists, Nietzsche writes that comparisons of the ancient and modern become largely questions of differing values. We do not value the same objects, actions, or desires as those in ancient Greece or Rome.

One persistent thread in Zuckerberg’s work is that the power dynamics are less effective in progressive societies than in the United States. For example, Valizadeh has written numerous books (that were recently banned by Amazon) about his worldly travels as a PUA. Where he has found great success in countries like the US, Valizadeh found no success in progressive Denmark. “Since leftist social progress renders game tactics ineffective,” writes Zuckerberg, “it is no wonder that pickup artists long for the lost mores of ancient Rome.”

Zuckerberg argues that it is important to study why classical texts have been weaponized by TRP and how, regardless of their “appropriation of antiquity,” the ancient texts are already problematic themselves. So, rather than simply comparing the ancient texts to the manosphere blogs, Zuckerberg aims to compare the underlying theories that inform the writings of PUAs, Ovid, and others. Again, she turns to the outer societal context to discover why the men of the manosphere revere Ovid’s writings and similar texts.

Of course, as Zuckerberg points out, a critique of the problematic content within ancient texts can be taken too far. Her analysis is even-keeled because she not only condemns misogynists and racists on the manosphere and in classical texts, but also criticizes radical feminists, students, and progressive classicists in academia. For example, Reed College students calling themselves “Reedies Against Racism” (RAR) recently protested the existence of white men in the curricula of a basic required humanities course. RAR argued that the class’s Eurocentrism was a form of white supremacy and that all of the texts written by dead white men should be removed. Zuckerberg argues against the removal of classical texts from academic syllabi, and instead advocates for a more informed understanding of the societal context surrounding the authors of those texts. She points toward the implications that of banning classical literature: countless feminists, theorists, and leftists in the past — such as Judith Butler, Simone de Beauvoir, and even Jay-Z — have used classical texts to better understand patriarchy, oppression, and resistance. Zuckerberg sites her own online journal, Eidolon, as a source for how to use ancient texts to resist, rather than ossify, misogyny.

Ancient texts serve as the rose-colored lens through which the men of the manosphere see the world. The same classical texts are viewed as problematic and objects that should be prohibited by progressives and radical feminists. But Zuckerberg argues that neither of these extremes is appropriate — she treads the fine line very well, often referring to herself as a feminist who actively studies and writes about classical texts. The utopian visions of both sides lack context. The men of the manosphere are able to experience their aims through the translated written word while surrounded by a completely different societal context, and those who want to eliminate the means by which these men operate are ignoring the benefits of reading classical texts towards the end of challenging cultural and often misogynistic norms. Zuckerberg urges against the utopia and idealism of both, while advocating for an informed critique of ancient and contemporary misogynistic texts.

Why Pickup Artists Are Reading Ovid

The “Red Pill” community online frequently appropriates ancient classic literature as justification for their beliefs.

No exaggeration: Trump wants to erase transgender people

It would essentially impose North Carolina's HB2 on the entire country.

ZACK FORD
OCT 22, 2018, 11:23 AM

Image
ACTIVISTS GATHERED SUNDAY NIGHT IN WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK IN NEW YORK CITY TO PROTEST THE TRANS ERASURE MEMO.

A Sunday New York Times article revealed that the Trump administration is planning to impose a rule that would effectively erase the existence of transgender people under the law. Though the Times did not share the full memo draft it had reviewed, it detailed the memo’s plan to define sex across agencies as “either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with” — subject to genetic testing.

It’s the equivalent of imposing North Carolina’s HB2 at the federal level, dictating that transgender people can never be respected under the law according to their gender identity. It’s also entirely unclear how intersex people would fit into this “federal registry of genitals,” given their genitals and genes would likely not place them neatly into a “male or female” category.

Understandably, this report prompted terror and outrage across the LGBTQ community, with the ACLU promising to immediately sue if such regulations actually drop. But what’s particularly terrifying about is that the scope is so broad. While the memo reflected how the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) hopes to interpret Title IX’s education protections, it calls for adopting “an explicit and uniform definition of gender” across all federal agencies.

The Trump administration has already taken steps to roll back transgender protections in piecemeal ways. For example, the Department of Education rescinded its guidance protecting transgender students under Title IX and stopped hearing their discrimination complaints entirely, the Bureau of Prisons rescinded protections for transgender prisoners, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is working to undo transgender health care protections found in the Affordable Care Act, and the Department of Housing & Urban Development has delayed implementing homeless shelter protections for transgender people. The DOJ has already begun arguing that employment discrimination against transgender people should be legal, and President Trump himself dictated a ban on transgender people serving in the military, which the administration continues to fight for.

The new memo suggests an attempt to codify this transphobia across the entire federal government. This would impact not only Title IX’s education protections, but Title VII’s employment protections, the health care protections under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, and every single law that protects against discrimination on the basis of sex. The reality is that if these protections do not apply to people according to their gender identity, they would not apply to transgender people at all.

The question of whether protections on the basis of “sex” include “gender identity” is one many federal courts have wrestled with. In recent years, they have repeatedly concluded that the two are inextricably linked for a pretty simple reason: A school, employer, landlord, or health care provider can’t make a decision to treat a transgender woman differently from a cisgender woman without making a stereotypical distinction based on sex.

For example, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled last year against a Wisconsin school that tried to segregate a transgender student, explaining, “A policy that requires an individual to use a bathroom that does not conform with his or her gender identity punishes that individual for his or her gender non‐conformance, which in turn violates Title IX.” The school had forced the student to only use a gender-neutral restroom, and the Court noted that this subjected him to “different rules, sanctions, and treatment than non‐transgender students, in violation of Title IX.”

In another recent case that may be headed to the Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled that a Michigan funeral home’s discrimination against a transgender employee was illegal under Title VII. When Aimee Stephens began transitioning, she sought to follow the funeral home’s dress code for women, but because the funeral home owner refused to recognize her gender identity, he fired her for not following the men’s dress code. The Court rejected the funeral home’s argument that she was merely fired over the dress code. “Here, we ask whether Stephens would have been fired if Stephens had been a woman who sought to comply with the women’s dress code,” the Court wrote. “The answer quite obviously is no.”

But if the Trump administration implements this sweeping rule about how “sex” should be defined in these laws, discrimination cases like these could end up being decided the other way. Historically, courts have deferred to federal agencies’ interpretation of their own policies — though the new conservative majority on the Supreme Court may be primed to reverse this precedent of deference. In the meantime, at least, courts may feel bound to defer to the government’s definition of “sex” rather than applying their own reasoning to the cases before them.

Trump Admin Attempts to Erase Existence of Trans People After Years of GOP-Led Attacks on Freedoms

CHASE STRANGIO: So, this is part of the Trump administration’s widespread effort to attack trans rights. And in this case, it’s a memo that was written months ago that is part of an effort to restrict the federal civil rights laws so that trans people aren’t protected. Now, it’s being touted as this effort to erase trans people, and I think that’s certainly what many in the administration would like to do. That’s what we saw with the military ban. That’s what we saw with the memo with respect to prisons. But the reality is that the executive branch of government cannot single-handedly change the law. So this is an effort to narrow federal civil rights protections, but federal civil rights protections are still written by Congress, existing in federal law and interpreted by the court. So this is certainly not the final word on anything, but it is part of a widespread attack on the trans community that we’ve seen across the administration.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: Well, can you talk about what’s been happening at the state level?

CHASE STRANGIO: Yeah, absolutely. So, I think, just to take a step back, this effort to define what people are calling, quote-unquote, “biological sex” is really a concerted effort to both situate trans people outside the law and to claim that our bodies are really a threat to others. And we saw this in 2015, in 2016, in North Carolina and elsewhere, with HB 2, for example, in North Carolina, which was really an effort to push trans people out of public life. And now, you know, two years later, the people who were defending HB 2 have high-level positions in the federal government, and so we’re seeing an effort to implement this at the federal level.

AMY GOODMAN: Explain what HB 2 is again, for people who might not remember, in North Carolina.

CHASE STRANGIO: So, HB 2 was the law in North Carolina that passed in 2016 that barred transgender people from using facilities that matched our genders. That passed quickly in a special session in North Carolina. The people who were defending HB 2 in court now have incredibly high-level positions in the federal government: head of the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, the solicitor general of the United States and a federal judge on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. So the very people who were orchestrating a systematic attack on trans people at the state level are now running things at the federal government. That’s both true with respect to HB 2, but it’s also true with respect to the many groups that have had coordinated attacks on the LGBT community for decades. So, people who have been involved with Alliance Defending Freedom, the Heritage Foundation are now the people who are not only in the federal government, but who are running the, quote-unquote, “civil rights divisions” of federal executive agencies. And it has been their mission to attack trans people for years, if not decades. And so, that’s what we’re seeing, an effort to restrict the ability of trans people to get legal protections.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: Well, could you explain, what would the effect of this be on transgender people, if there is this narrow definition of biological, as you say—so-called biological sex?

CHASE STRANGIO: So, I think there’s two things we should be looking at. The first is that this is an effort to restrict federal civil rights laws. What that would mean is that it would restrict the ability of transgender, non-binary, gender-nonconforming people—and actually all people—to access protections under federal law that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in education, housing, employment. So there’s that effort to restrict the law in that way. Again, the courts are going to be the ones to interpret this in the end, and Congress could come in and make changes to anything the executive did. So there’s that effort.

And then there’s this larger sort of discursive cultural effort to tell the world that there is no such thing as a trans person, that you are born with a sex, and that can never be changed. And this is an insidious effort to tell the world and sort of fuel this idea that trans people are always fraudulent, that somehow the truth of our bodies and our so-called biology is going to be betrayed. And this is also what fuels violence against so many trans people, especially trans people of color.

AMY GOODMAN: Because?

CHASE STRANGIO: Because what happens is there’s this idea that trans people are inauthentic, that we’re out here to deceive you. But the reality is, is that we are who we say we are, and that biological sex, as the other side, as the right, as people in power in the Trump administration are trying to talk about it, is not a scientific fact. It’s an ideological effort to tell people that trans existence isn’t real. And so, then what happens is, on the streets, people say, “Oh, you’re really a man,” to a woman who is trans. And that is precisely what fuels the violence against so many in the trans community.

The Gateway Pundit’s obsession with “virile” Honduran refugees harks back to centuries of racist fearmongering about brown and black sexuality

Image

And where Twitter trolls go, elected GOP officials are sure to follow. Indeed, in remarks during a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing on refugees in 2015, California Congressman Dana Rohrabacher raised the specter that “trainloads” of “very virile young men” from the Middle East were trying to sneak into Western Europe by pretending to be “desperate refugees,” something he said was “frankly very upsetting to me.”

But if you want to see the far-right in full psychosexual meltdown over too-sexy refugees, you have to turn to the virtual pages of The Daily Stormer, which regularly portrays brown and black refugees as sex-crazed “rapefugees” bent on the sexual conquest of white women.

While the Stormer’s attacks on refugees drip with racist hatred, the site’s writers direct much of their vitriol at white women whom the Stormer deems insufficiently racist towards the non-white “invaders.” As the Stormer sees it, this friendliness towards refugees is the result of the illicit hunger of white women for hunky men of color. Not that anyone at the Stormer would phrase it quit that way. They are a bit more, er, salty.

In a 2015 post titled “The Greasiest Cuckolding of All,” Daily Stormer head boy Andrew Anglin declared that “[t]he White European female’s craving for Black dick threatens to collapse civilization itself.”

And he was just getting started.

White women across the Western world have been put in control of Western societies, and they are using this control to ensure an endless supply of Black and Arab men to satisfy their depraved sexual desires. …

White women – an undetermined percentage of them, but apparently most – are calling for Europe to be flooded with Black and Arab men so they can have sex with them. They are using the resources of White men to feed and clothe these objects of their sexual desire.

German women regularly get all up on men in refugee camps and attempt to have sex with them publicly.

Angela Merkel is said to require “dicks numbering in the hundreds per week” to satisfy her terrible urges.

Psychologists are uncertain about the nature of the drive of these White women to engage in bestial sex with unevolved monkeymen, but the running theory is that they do this because White men have become cowardly f**gots, incapable of arousing sexual desire in their own females.

He goes on like this for several hundred more words, but I think you’ve probably gotten the gist of his argument already.

“Black dick” — and brown dick, and indeed virtually every kind of dick that is not of a predominantly pinkish hue — has loomed large in the imaginations of white racists for centuries. Sometimes the white obsession with black and brown sexuality was about fear: Lynchings of alleged, usually falsely accused, black “rapists” were as much about reassuring sexually paranoid whites of their cultural virility as they were about terrorizing the black population.

U.S. Right Helps, Cheers Rise of Brazilian Authoritarian

By Peter Montgomery | October 25, 2018 5:22 pm

Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro (Image from Bolsonaro's Twitter feed)

The rising political tide of right-wing nationalist movements appears poised to crest next in Brazil, where a torture-supporting apologist for military dictatorships and police killings appears to be headed for a victory in this Sunday’s presidential election. The U.S. right-wing is cheering his rise.

Legislator Jair Bolsonaro is riding a wave of public anger over crime and corruption, with a lot of help from the military, big agricultural interests, and conservative evangelicals—the “Bullets, Beef and Bibles” caucus. A Bolsonaro victory could signal “a major step toward authoritarianism,” writes Michael Albertus at Foreign Policy.

On Sunday, Bolsonaro gave a “fiery and confrontational speech” to supporters in which he reportedly pledged to jail his opponent and said, “These red criminals will be banished from our homeland.” Said Bolsonaro, “It will be a cleansing never seen in the history of Brazil”—a frightening promise given the brutality of the military dictatorship that ruled the country from 1964 to 1985.

Bolsonaro excels at hateful rhetoric. He once said that he would rather his son die in a car accident than be gay. He has called Afro-Brazilians lazy and fat. He told a female legislator that she wasn’t even worth raping. He publicly dedicated his congressional vote to impeach former President Dilma Rousseff to the head of a torture unit under which she was tortured during the military dictatorship. He has praised Chile’s dictator Pinochet, who killed thousands, for doing “what had to be done.”

Liberty Counsel’s leadership says trans youth have high rates of suicide because they’re defying God

Liberty Counsel’s podcast outlined group’s support for conversion therapy while spreading myths about the practice

Video ››› October 24, 2018 3:55 PM EDT

From the October 23 edition of Liberty Counsel's Faith and Freedom Podcast:

HOLLY MEADE (LIBERTY COUNSEL DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS): It’s never positive results when we -- when we try to go against the way God has created us. He has created every cell in our body. He knows us. And the facts speak for themselves. When you see these, especially minors, going through this hormone therapy, having surgery, there is a 40 percent increase of suicide right there. So, there’s the facts showing this is not an effective way to deal with these issues.

MAT STAVER (HOST, LIBERTY COUNSEL FOUNDER): And it’s not because the society doesn’t accept them, because there’s studies in other more accepting, if you will, countries that show the same high level of mental stress for someone who is engaged in same-sex activity or having gender confusion that they’re dealing with. So, it’s not just, oh well, you need to change society’s acceptance of this and all will be fine. No, it’s when you take a person or anything that's created to have a certain function and identity, and then you go against that. You’re going against what God created you to be. God created male and female as complementary sexes with complementary relationships. It is all part of relationship that God ultimately created as part of the natural created order.

MATT BARBER (FORMER LIBERTY COUNSEL, FOUNDER OF BARBWIRE.COM): Yeah.

STAVER: When you, ultimately, try to undermine male and female as though it doesn’t exist -- or you simply want to abolish it or change it and create it in any way you want it to be, and you do that in the area of marriage as well -- that has huge ramifications, not only sociologically, but spiritually as well. It is a direct attack on the very core essence of Christianity, on our creator who created us in his image.

MEADE: Right. And these counselors help these minors get to the root cause. They talk with them. It’s just talk therapy. There’s no weird -- there’s no electrodes going on or anything like that. It’s just helping them talk through what is the root cause. Was there some kind of abuse in the background?

...

BARBER: And Mat, you make a great point about how those who oppose change, they deflect by saying, no, no, the reason you see so much depression and alcoholism and drug abuse among those in the so-called LGBT community is because of homophobia, because of a lack of acceptance. But as you point out, Mat, statistically there is no difference between countries that fully accept those lifestyle choices and countries where so-called homophobia or transphobia prevails. So that’s a deflection. The reality is that people, when they are swimming upstream against God’s will, it creates instability not just in your emotional -- kind of in your psyche -- but in your soul.

The timeline for alt-right killers began on May 23, 2014.

On that day, college sophomore Elliot Rodger stabbed his three roommates to death before driving to a sorority house at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and shooting several women. He then killed or injured several pedestrians with both gunfire and his vehicle before exchanging fire with police and eventually taking his own life. He ultimately killed seven and wounded 14.

Rodger left behind a sprawling 107,000-word manifesto titled, “My Twisted World: The Story of Elliot Rodger,” which contained passages lamenting his inability to find a girlfriend, expressing extreme misogyny and various racist positions including disgust for interracial couples (despite the fact that he was multi-racial himself).

“How could an inferior, ugly black boy be able to get a white girl and not me? I am beautiful, and I am half white myself,” Rodger wrote. “I am descended from British aristocracy. He is descended from slaves.”

In a video, uploaded to YouTube just prior to his violent rampage titled, “Elliot Rodger’s Retribution,” Rodger tells his audience, “Well, this is my last video, it all has to come to this. Tomorrow is the day of retribution, the day in which I will have my revenge against humanity, against all of you. … College is the time when everyone experiences those things such as sex and fun and pleasure. Within those years, I’ve had to rot in loneliness. It’s not fair.”

Rodger frequented PUAhate, a deeply misogynistic forum populated by failed “pick up artists” dedicated to revealing, “the scams, deception, and misleading marketing techniques used by dating gurus and the seduction community to deceive men and profit from them.” Discussions about women on the forum are at best objectifying and at worst, violent.

In his manifesto, Rodger fantasized about putting all women in concentration camps to starve while he watched “gleefully” from a tower. It is celebrated on some alt-right sites, like The Right Stuff’s 504um.

User “Doctor Mayhem” annotates excerpts from Rodger’s manifesto in a thread titled, “Elliot Rodger Did Nothing Wrong: Why Yellow Fever is Okay.”

“Basically, all you need to know is that seeing blonde girls with niggers made Elliot RRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEE like a billion pissed off Pepes,” Mayhem writes towards the end of his post. “We all know the end result. DEAD SLUTS! So White men of all kinds! No need to fear creating hapas! [a term denoting someone of partial Asian or Pacific Islander descent] In fact, you are a much superior man for the creation of them! LET ALL NEGLECTED HAPA BOYS KILL SLUTS IN THE NAME OF WHITE SHARIA!”

He concludes, “ALL HAIL THE PATRON SAINT OF WHITE SHARIA!”

The term, “white sharia,” allegedly coined by Sacco Vandal of the popular alt-right site Vandal Void, is a radical response to Patrick Buchanan’s argument in Death of the West: that the increase in immigration and decline of white birthrates is leading to the end of Western civilization.

Vandal argues for an end to women’s suffrage and stripping them of all political, legal, and economic power. “Our men need harems, and the members of those harems need to be baby factories,” Vandal writes. “This is not about muh dicking nor beta revenge uprisings. These are cold, calculated plans to save our dying race. … White Sharia is a blueprint for salvation.”

Rodger’s celebration at the 504um, one of the premier alt-right forums, is the rule rather than the exception, and locates misogyny at the core of the alt-right.

Take for instance “Just what are traditional gender roles?,” an article written by notorious hacker and troll Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer at the Daily Stormer — one of the alt-right’s most repugnant and successful propaganda engines — in response to those “counter signaling” the “white sharia.”

“Rape is a property crime and nothing more,” Auernheimer writes. “Regular slapping and the occasional vicious beating of a woman was a necessity in every household. Women need to be regularly disciplined to keep their heads about them.”

Auernheimer continues, “Man up, put women under your heel, throw away their birth control and make them bear your children and take care of your house. If they resist, discipline them. … All we are pushing for is a return to the status of women we had in the early 19th century before Jews and their feminism ruined our civilization. This should not be controversial. If you are opposing WHITE SHARIA because you disagree with women being reduced to the status of property to be beaten and fucked at the whims of her husband, you are a faggot and a cuckold and have no place in any right-wing site, and instead belong at the bottom of festering bogs like Reddit and Voat.”

Andrew Anglin, the neo-Nazi Daily Stormer’s founder and chief propagandist, has his own troubling history of vicious misogyny, tracking all the way back to high school.

According to an account published by The Atlantic, Anglin’s high school girlfriend told him that she was raped by a friend’s older brother while passed out at a party. He allegedly responded by calling her a “slut” and encouraged girls from another high school to harass her for weeks. Both the misogyny and harassing behaviors are recognizable on the present-day Daily Stormer.

Why be nonbinary?

A world segregated into male and female categories feels suffocating. Nonbinary identity is a radical escape hatch

Most people assume that gender is tied to biological sex. For the majority, this means that gender is identical to sex, where sex is taken to be determined by one’s reproductive features. Call this the ‘identity’ view of gender. For others, following Simone de Beauvoir, gender is the social meaning of sex. Call this the ‘social position’ view of gender.

On either the identity or the social-position view, your gender is constrained by whether your body is sexed as male or as female. According to the identity view, your gender just is your sexed body. And, according to the social view, your gender is unavoidably indexed to your sexed body, because society imposes social roles onto you on the basis of your biology. On either view, then, it would seem that nonbinary genders do not – cannot – exist. But this is mistaken.

ET TU, BRUTES
DONNA ZUCKERBERG ON HOW MISOGYNY RED-PILLED THE CLASSICS

Image

When the Red Pillers—online communities of far-right, anti-feminist men—need to back up their misogynist and racist claims, they look to Ovid, Euripides, or the Stoics. On Reddit and other troll-favorite websites, so called pick-up artists use Ovid’s Ars Amatoria as a dating manual to justify ignoring women’s boundaries and incels quote Epictetus. They appropriate classic texts to lend weight to their arguments and ignore glaring contradictions to fabricate a cohesive transhistorical “white” identity and claim the universality of their bigoted views.

Dr. Donna Zuckerberg’s book Not All Dead White Men: Classics and Misogyny in the Digital Age traces the application—and misapplication—of classical authors and texts in online communities that see feminism as a threat. I spoke with Zuckerberg about the contested place of the classics in academia, Socrates as the OG troll, and the power of rage.

How widespread is the ideology of the Red Pill?

There are several writers and speakers who are not necessarily part of the Red Pill but have sort of marketed themselves, pitched themselves, packaged themselves in a way that has inferred that the Red Pill will be their audience. Part of how that dynamic works is that there can sometimes be a little bit of a disconnect between the precise content of what the thinker is saying and what their audience hears and interprets it as. And it can be really beneficial to the speaker because it gives them huge plausible deniability.

But if you are cultivating an audience of out and proud sexists, then you don’t actually need to be saying anything that is quite as explicitly sexist as the material that appeared on [the “men’s” website] Return of Kings. Pretty recently there was an article on The Daily Stormer that said that Tucker Carlson basically says all the same things that they do, just in a less obvious way. That gives you a sense of how these dark corners of the Internet and more mainstream media and thinkers have a feedback loop where they amplify each other.

Return of Kings was the source of a lot of the content that I analyze in the book, and anyone unlucky enough to come into contact with [the website’s] articles or writers will immediately appreciate what a victory it is that the site has become too unprofitable and draining for Roosh V to maintain. But it’s important to realize how widespread and normalized the ideas on Red Pill blogs have become. Jordan Peterson is now spreading many of the same basic concepts that you can find in articles on Return of Kings, although of course he expresses them in a much more refined and intellectual-seeming way. There’s significant overlap between his audience and the Red Pill community. So reading sites like Return of Kings—or analyses of those sites, like my book or David Futrelle’s amazing site We Hunted the Mammoth—can really shed light on why Peterson’s ideas are such a short hop away from vicious misogyny and racism.

In your book, you identify this persistent fear of the false rape allegation and trace it back to these classical texts. Did you notice any of those threads during Brett Kavanaugh’s hearings?

One of the tropes I’ve seen on Twitter and in conservative media about Christine Blasey-Ford is this speculation that [it’s possible that] when she and Brett Kavanaugh were in high school, she was not as cool as he was and that he [may have] rejected her. So, [maybe] this false allegation she’s making against him now is some kind of decades-long revenge scheme. And this seems wildly improbable to a large number of Americans, but it fits very well within a very old trope that goes back to the story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife in the Old Testament, but also to the work of Euripides. This idea that women make false accusations for revenge is a very old idea.

Bolsonaro, 'gender ideology' and hegemonic masculinity in Brazil

Jair Bolsonaro's rise to power marks the return of white, male, sexist and authoritarian politics in Brazil.

Supporters of far-right legislator Jair Bolsonaro take part in a rally during the second round of the presidential elections on October 28, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Brazil has just elected Jair Bolsonaro as its next president - a man well-known nationally and internationally for his misogyny and homophobia. Although over the years, his rhetoric targeting women, the LGBTQI community and minorities grew increasingly obscene, it in no way upset his political career. In fact, it seemed to strengthen it.

During a parliamentary debate in 2014, he told MP Maria do Rosario that he would not rape her because she "was not worth it". The same year, he suggested during a TV interview that spanking a son who "showed signs" of being gay was the best way for parents to change his behaviour and assure he would grow up as a "proper" man. In 2017, he claimed that after having four sons, having a daughter was the result of a moment of "weakness".

In making these outrageous assertions in public, Bolsonaro was aiming to position himself strategically as a key player within the so-called "war on gender ideology". This political choice helped him gain popularity and eventually win the presidency.

Now he is likely to pay back the reactionary forces who contributed to his political success by empowering them in their war on progressive gender activism in Brazil.

What is gender ideology?

The term "gender ideology" has no academic or theoretical basis, nor a clear and coherent definition. It is used within conservative religious circles to vaguely denote policies or activism aimed at improving gender equality and upholding the rights of women and the LGBTQI community.

It has its roots in the response of the Catholic Church and a number of influential conservative activists to the progress made on these fronts at the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development and the 1995 World Conference on Women.

This idea of a "gender" conspiracy or an agenda to undermine family and religious values and promote immorality quickly spread throughout the world after the mid-1990s. Conservative circles started instrumentalising the word "gender" to come after different "enemies" at different times: feminists, gays, trans people, etc.
