Trump labor secretary who cut Epstein deal plans to slash funds for sex trafficking victims

Democrats condemn as ‘amoral’ Alex Acosta’s proposed 80% funding cut for US agency that combats child sex trafficking

Alexander Acosta, the US labor secretary under fire for having granted Jeffrey Epstein immunity from federal prosecution in 2008, after the billionaire was investigated for having run a child sex trafficking ring, is proposing 80% funding cuts for the government agency that combats child sex trafficking.

Acosta’s plan to slash funding of a critical federal agency in the fight against the sexual exploitation of children is contained in his financial plans for the Department of Labor for fiscal year 2020. In it, he proposes decimating the resources of a section of his own department known as the International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB).

The bureau’s budget would fall from $68m last year to just $18.5m. The proposed reduction is so drastic that experts say it would effectively kill off many federal efforts to curb sex trafficking and put the lives of large numbers of children at risk.

ILAB has the task of countering human trafficking, child labor and forced labor across the US and around the world. Its mission is “to promote a fair global playing field for workers” and it is seen as a crucial leader in efforts to crack down on the sex trafficking of minors.

Katherine Clark, a congresswoman from Massachusetts, said Acosta’s proposed cut was “reckless” and “amoral”. When seen alongside the sweetheart plea deal he granted Epstein in 2008, when Acosta was the US attorney in Miami, she said, it indicated that the labor secretary did not see protecting vulnerable children as a priority.

“This is now a pattern,” Clark told the Guardian. “Like so many in this administration Mr Acosta chooses the powerful and wealthy over the vulnerable and victims of sexual assault and it is time that he finds another line of work.”

Clark grilled Acosta about the proposed cuts in April, when he presented his departmental budget to the House appropriations subcommittee. On that occasion, she said, she found him “rude, dismissive, challenging”.

“I’m sure this is a very uncomfortable topic for him,” Clark said, “but I don’t think he should be able to hide from it.”

Acosta is facing mounting pressure from Democrats to resign, over the lenient deal he gave Epstein and in the wake of the billionaire’s new prosecution. Epstein was arrested on Saturday and indicted on two sex trafficking counts by federal prosecutors in the southern district of New York in an apparent rebuke to Acosta’s earlier decision.

Under the 2008 deal negotiated by Acosta, an FBI investigation that had produced a 53-page draft indictment involving more than 30 potential underage victims was shut down. The billionaire only had to plead guilty to lesser state charges of soliciting women who were controversially labeled prostitutes.

Epstein ended up serving 13 months in a Florida jail during which he was allowed out six days a week to attend his plush business offices.

Senior Democrats have been lining up to call for Acosta to go. On Tuesday the party leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, accused the labor secretary of having let a serial sex trafficker “off easy”.

Schumer said: “This is not acceptable. We cannot have as one of the leading appointed officials in America someone who has done this.”

Others to call for Acosta to go include House speaker Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful Democrat in Congress, Tim Kaine, a senator from Virginia, and former vice-president Joe Biden, now running for the presidential nomination.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump gave his first comments since Epstein’s arrest. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the president praised Acosta as an “excellent secretary of labor” said: “The rest of it we’ll have to look at very carefully but you are talking about a long time ago.”

Trump tried to minimize Acosta’s role in the 2008 plea deal, saying: “I hear there were a lot of people involved in that decision not just him.”

The Department of Labor is widely respected for its vital role in investigating, prosecuting and preventing human trafficking worldwide. Experts say any major cut to ILAB would be a direct threat to the US government’s ability to combat the sexual exploitation of children.

“A huge cut of this sort is bound to expose children to more risk of sexual trafficking,” said Kathleen Kim, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles who co-authored California’s law on human trafficking.

“An 80% reduction at ILAB will undoubtedly eliminate many of the US government’s anti-human trafficking efforts that have been critical in encouraging action by law enforcement.”

Kim said Acosta having granted the lenient plea deal to Epstein, combined with the proposed cuts to ILAB, made it entirely inappropriate that he continued in his current role.

“He should step down,” she said.

The battle over the future of ILAB is ongoing. Acosta’s proposed cuts were imported into Trump’s $4.7tn federal budget, released in March, which contains several Republican goals including extra money for the military and funding of the president’s beloved border wall.

The Democrats have responded with a 2020 House budget that passed in June. It would see ILAB resources expand to $122m.

“Congress ultimately makes the decisions about how money is spent and appropriated,” said Clark. “We will prevail and the bureau will not be shuttered if we can get this item through Congress.”

this is all very believable to me ....the transnational crime syndicate masquerading as a government is trying their very best to cover all of this up...why was trump was elected...just to put babies in concentration camps? Why is trump doing all this....because he is being blackmailed ....once the mob owns you you can never leave...that's why Manafort is sitting in jail instead of ratting out his owners

every one should watch the Guthrie interview
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ne ... s-n1028011

100's of children.....was Epstein just into little girls or are there boys out there also?

trump put Acosta in place just as he was told to do

Lordy there are tapes...and there are a whole lot of people being blackmailed

I'd like to know who Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell work for

In my earlier post I mentioned the reporting of Vicky Ward who did a lengthy piece on Epstein for Vanity Fair in 2003 and is now revisiting the story in The Daily Beast. (Ward had a detailed version of the underaged girls part of the story but Vanity Fair cut that from the 2003 story.) I wanted to flag your attention to a passage in her latest piece at The Daily Beast which reports that Acosta told Trump transition officials that he’d been told to back off the Epstein case at the time and that that was why he gave Epstein such a generous deal.

Here’s the passage …

Epstein’s name, I was told, had been raised by the Trump transition team when Alexander Acosta, the former U.S. attorney in Miami who’d infamously cut Epstein a non-prosecution plea deal back in 2007, was being interviewed for the job of labor secretary. The plea deal put a hard stop to a separate federal investigation of alleged sex crimes with minors and trafficking.

“Is the Epstein case going to cause a problem [for confirmation hearings]?” Acosta had been asked. Acosta had explained, breezily, apparently, that back in the day he’d had just one meeting on the Epstein case. He’d cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein’s attorneys because he had “been told” to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to intelligence’ and to leave it alone,” he told his interviewers in the Trump transition, who evidently thought that was a sufficient answer and went ahead and hired Acosta. (The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)

It’s quite hard to know what to make of this claim. As one of my colleagues just pointed out to me the dialog itself seems more out of Hollywood that something you’d hear from a former US Attorney. On it’s face this sounds like second or third hand information, which puts some question over its reliability and may explain the movie script dialog. More importantly, Acosta is hardly a reliable fact witness in this case. He has every reason to deflect responsibility for the deal he made with Epstein. Finally, it seems highly improbable that Epstein “belonged to intelligence”.

What does seem plausible though is that Epstein had many very high profile defenders and that this somehow translated into message to back off or to make the situation go away with as little publicity and pressure on Epstein as possible. We can blame Acosta for the deal he cut. But that doesn’t explain why he did. Getting told to back off or hearing directly from a bunch of Epstein’s high roller friends sounds like a logical supposition.

It certainly seems worth asking under oath what Acosta told transition officials when he was angling for and getting his current cabinet position.

Inside Jeffrey Epstein's New York mansion: 'Vast trove' of lewd photos, a life-size doll and other oddities
Doug Stanglin
Updated 1:07 p.m. ET July 10, 2019

Federal agents who searched the East Side Manhattan mansion of wealthy sex offender Jeffrey Epstein turned up a "vast trove of lewd photographs" of young-looking girls, including hundreds of meticulously labeled nude pictures locked in a safe, according to federal court documents.

The description, laid out ina memo by prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, was aimed at convincing a federal judge that Epstein, who was arrested July 6 upon return from Paris on his private jet, should not be freed pending trial on charges of sex trafficking.

Agents used crowbars to force open the front door of the seven-story Upper East Side mansion.

The memo said the search turned up not only evidence supporting its sex trafficking allegations against Esptein but also "hundreds – and perhaps thousands – of sexually suggestive photographs of fully – or partially – nude females."

While investigators were still reviewing the material, the memo said one of the girls, according to her attorney, "was underage at the time the relevant photographs were taken."

This photo shows the Manhattan residence of Jeffrey Epstein on July 8, 2019. (Photo: Bebeto Matthews, AP)
It noted that other photographs were found in a locked safe that included CDs with handwritten labels including the descriptions "“Young [Name] + [Name],” “Misc nudes 1,” and “Girl pics nude.”

In calling for Epstein to remain in jail, the memo noted that he is a registered sex offender after a 2008 conviction in Florida and "is not reformed, he is not chastened, he is not repentant, rather he is a continuing danger to the community and an individual who faces devastating evidence supporting deeply serious charges."

Epstein, 66, has pleaded not guilty to one federal count of sex trafficking and one count of sex trafficking conspiracy for allegedly sexually exploiting minor girls at his homes in Manhattan, Palm Beach, Florida, and other locations, according to the federal indictment.

In a report on the mansion, valued at more than $55 million, The New York Times noted that its artwork includes, on the second floor, a commissioned mural of a “photorealistic prison scene that included barbed wire, corrections officers and a guard station, with Mr. Epstein portrayed in the middle.”

The Times quotes R. Couri Hay, a public relations specialist who recently met with Epstein at his home, as saying, “(Epstein) said, ‘That’s me, and I had this painted because there is always the possibility that could be me again.’”

New Epstein Accuser Goes to Court, as Acosta Plays Defense
July 10, 2019
ADAM KLASFELD

(CN) — President Trump’s Labor Secretary Alex Acosta will speak to the press Wednesday to defend the secret plea deal he struck over a decade ago with Jeffrey Epstein, mere hours after the wealthy pedophile faced new accusations in New York.

Acosta had been the Southern District of Florida’s top prosecutor back when Epstein entered into a “global” agreement that shielded his co-conspirators with immunity from prosecution. The disgraced financier went on to serve little a 13-month sentence in a county jail for federal offenses, being granted work leave from that facility six out of seven days every week.

Ahead of 2:30 p.m. press conference Acosta scheduled this morning, he took no ownership of the deal in a Tuesday tweet.

“With the evidence available more than a decade ago, federal prosecutors insisted that Epstein go to jail, register as a sex offender and put the world on notice that he was a sexual predator,” Acosta wrote.

Attention on Epstein has reached a boiling point in the wake of a February ruling out of Florida where a federal judge estimated that his plea kept more than 30 victims of Epstein in the dark unlawfully.

Since Epstein’s Manhattan arraignment on Monday on new federal charges, prosecutors have encouraged victims to call 1-800-CALL-FBI to leave tips on their line of major cases, listing the sex-trafficking case as their top priority. More accusers quickly shared stories about their experiences with Epstein as girls.

The latest is Jennifer Danielle Araoz, who launched the first steps of Manhattan Supreme Court litigation shortly after speaking to NBC News this morning.

“My gosh, I was 14 years old,” Araoz told “The Today Show’s” Savannah Guthrie in a tearful interview. “What the hell do you know when you’re that young?”

Araoz’s story echoes those of several other victims: She said that an unidentified recruiter approached her at a performing arts high school in Queens when she was young and vulnerable, promising career help and money.

A year later, Araoz said, Epstein raped her.

“On top of this brutal rape, Epstein did not use a condom, which substantially contributed to extreme emotional distress and the development of a panic disorder, which was exacerbated by the fact that Ms. Araoz had recently lost her father to AIDS,” a draft copy of Araoz’s complaint states.

Araoz’s attorneys Daniel and William Kaiser, from the firm Kaiser Saurborn & Mair, included the draft as an exhibit in a petition seeking the recruiter’s identity.

They will have leave to sue on Aug. 14 this year, the day New York’s Child Victims Act comes into effect, extending the statute of limitations indefinitely for a one-year window.

This story is developing…

Adam Klasfeld

Labor Secretary Acosta's press conference is about to begin. I'll be following along remotely.

For now, my scene-setter and developing story, for @CourthouseNews

Acosta: "Let me start by reiterating that I'm pleased that the New York prosecution is going forward."

Citing new evidence, Acosta says: "His acts are despicable and the New York prosecution affords an opportunity to more fully bring Jeffrey Epstein to justice."

"Facts are important, and facts are being overlooked," Acosta claims.

He says that the state attorney's office deal was worse, in that it would have let Epstein walk free. Then, the U.S. Attorney's office jumped in, he says.

As @jkbjournalist noted, Acosta is downplaying what evidence they had.

Except the record shows you had the evidence in 2007. Remember the 53-page indictment, the phone records, the trash pulls, the flight manifests, the witnesses who worked for Epstein? https://twitter.com/secretaryacosta/sta ... 8490481664

Acosta says that victims were scared to testify and backed out, reading from affidavits from law enforcement officials at the time.

"These cases... are hard," he added.

"This case, people have said, was unusual, and it was. It was complicated by the fact that it started as a state investigation."

Acosta, in short: Blame Florida.

"Today, we know a lot more about trauma affects victims' testimony," he notes.

"I have viewed the victim interviews. They are hard to watch.... I wanted to help them. That is why we intervened."

No assertion yet on why he did not inform them, per his legal obligation.

First question asks Acosta's relationship with the president, which Acosta says is "outstanding."

Second question: "Do you owe [victims] an apology [for not notifying them]?"

Acosta dances around it by calling it a "difficult decision."

If it went to trial, he said: "Talking about this would allow him to make the argument at trial that their testimony was compromised."

He doesn't say whether he owes them an apology, or address his legal obligation.

Another question: Why not a stronger charge? (Unstated: Epstein was charged with prostitution offenses.)

He says it was a question of avoiding "rolling the dice" at trial.

Question of whether he has regrets.

"No regrets is a very hard question," Acosta says.

"We expect a lot more transparency today," he continues. "As you watch these victim interviews, it's very obvious that the victims feel this was not a sufficient outcome."

Question notes Acosta currently heads an agency that deals with human trafficking, and notes the Labor Department stopped issuing certain visas to victims of human trafficking.

Acosta claims it's a "mischaracterization."

Reporter asks about Acosta's meeting with opposing counsel at a Marriott hotel, as reported by the Miami Herald.

Acosta claims that the meeting happened after the deal was struck.

Asked about the deal violating CVRA, Acosta said that it complied with department policy.

about that presser

why did Acosta go to such preposterous lengths to protect Epstein.....the question is why trump then rewarded Acosta with a cabinet position after he got trump’s friend Epstein off the hook and why trump is still covering for Acosta.

That’s A Weird Answer

Here’s Alex Acosta’s answer on that Daily Beast claim that he told Trump transition officials that he was told to lay off Epstein and that he was some sort of intelligence asset. That struck me as a pretty wild claim. But bizarrely Acosta non-denial denialed it with a claim about departmental policies which I don’t think adds up.

Acosta's comments assume there was an arbitrary time point where they had to cut off the investigation. That's not true, if they lacked sufficient evidence they could have continued to investigate. That "new evidence" he's glad SDNY prosecutors found was available back then too.

@Popehat

Dear @SecretaryAcosta:

I do not believe we have spoken since graduation. I regret encountering you under these circumstances.

I was not able to attend your press conference, but I do have some questions.

/1

/2 You knew, in 2008, that Mr. Epstein had a residence in New York and traveled to other jurisdictions, correct?

And you knew that it was conceivable that there could be an investigation of whether he committed federal crimes in other districts, correct?

/3 And, in fact, Mr. Secretary, Mr. Epstein's attorneys were vigorously demanding a non-prosecution deal that would cover any federal prosecution in any federal district in the United States, correct?

/4 They were elite, experienced lawyers, correct?

And they knew -- as any competent attorney would -- that Mr. Epstein faced exposure in other districts if he conducted the alleged activities in those districts, right?

/5 So you knew, when you approved this non-prosecution agreement, that someday Mr. Epstein's lawyers might be arguing that it barred prosecution in another district, correct?

In light of that, let's look at the agreement, shall we?

https://blog.bennettandbennett.com/2019 ... lorn-hope/

/6 Now, you're very familiar with the sorts of agreements that the U.S. Attorney's Office makes with defendants, right?

You'd agree with me that federal prosecutors take great pains to be very specific and explicit, and not ambiguous, in their agreements with defendants?

/7 Do you view this non-prosecution agreement as specific and not ambiguous, Mr. Secretary?

/8 I ask because of some of the terms of the agreement you approved seem to lend themselves to an argument by Mr. Epstein -- perhaps not a strong one, but an argument -- that the agreement is ambiguous about whether it applies outside your district.

/9 For instance, the agreement says that Epstein is seeking to "resolve globally his state and federal criminal liability" without defining that, and speaks generally about the "interests of the United States" without limitation.

Image
/10 Now, the agreement also says that "prosecution in this district" will be deferred, and elsewhere it says that the Southern District of Florida is deferring prosecution, which probably mean that SDNY will prevail on this argument.

Image

/11 But on the other hand, the agreement says that the U.S. Attorney's office and the FBI have investigated "any offenses that may have been committed by Epstein against the United States," without limitation by district.

Image

/12 Moreover, Mr. Secretary, the agreement contains a general promise by the United States -- not limited by district -- not to prosecute Mr. Epstein's co-conspirators.

Image

/13 Mr. Secretary, why doesn't the agreement have standard language specifically stating that it only binds the office offering it?

Why doesn't it have other language limiting what "global" means and specifying that it does not bind other districts?

/14 You would agree, Mr. Secretary, that you were competent and knew what you were doing at the time, correct?

And the defense was competent and knew what it was doing at the time?

In light of that, this level of ambiguity was intentional, correct?

/15 You'd agree with me that you did not take any of the steps required by the U.S. Attorney's Manual to secure the approval of other districts to bind them, correct?

So you did not have the right to offer an agreement that bound other districts to non-prosecution, right?

/16 Mr. Secretary, if you knew that Mr. Epstein's lawyers wanted a nationwide deal, and knew that he might use this agreement as a defense to prosecution elsewhere someday, why does this agreement have the ambiguities I've outlined above?

/17 I will return, sir, with further questions.

Why did Jeffrey Epstein build a temple on his private island?
J.K. Trotter

Image

The new charges against Jeffrey Epstein have renewed questions about his private Caribbean island, which features a building that resembles a religious temple.
The structure was built sometime between 2009 and 2013, but it's unclear what it's used for.
The building's strange appearance has piqued the interest of online conspiracy theorists.
A contractor and engineer who spoke with INSIDER highlighted an odd design anomaly: The medieval-era lock on the front door appears designed to keep people inside.
Visit INSIDER's homepage for more stories.
The federal charges against Jeffrey Epstein, unsealed on Monday morning in New York City, open the latest chapter in a very public campaign to bring the financier to justice. They also underscore how little is known about his life, including the source of his wealth, and how what is known doesn't quite add up. For instance: Is that really a temple on his private island? And to what?

Epstein's island, officially known as Little Saint James, is situated between St. Thomas and St. John, the two largest islands of the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Its 78 acres resemble a bird in flight, with its head, tail, and two wings corresponding to the intercardinal directions:

The main residence and compound occupies the northeast point, and a pair of guest houses occupy the northwest and southeast points. The southwest point, however, features a very different kind of building:

But seriously, what's up with this weird temple thing on Jeffrey Epstein's private island?

There's a lot going on here. The base is painted with broad, vivid blue horizontal stripes, and supports a large, golden dome. The entrance consists of an arched, seemingly wooden door equipped with black metal hardware. The sides appear to be cut with large windows, including a full-length one in the rear. You can see the back of the structure in a high-definition video captured in 2015 by Axiom, which produces and sells aerial photography:

The front is flanked by statues painted in gold; one of them appears to be the trident-wielding Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, while two others look like birds perched on the corners of the roof. It is surrounded by a line of palm trees and a terrace with a labyrinth motif. Finally, the exterior seems to incorporate an optical illusion, to create the impression that the exterior windows and door are set within carved flanges.

It strongly resembles a temple, though of which sort remains elusive. Epstein is Jewish, and it is possible that he wanted his own private synagogue. But the statuary would be out of place at such a temple, given the Old Testament's prohibition on graven images. Though the cubic base and dome call to mind Islamic architecture, Poseidon would likewise be an odd choice for a mosque. Churches, of course, tend to feature crosses.

Locals have suggested the building houses a "music room"

One clue appeared in an Associated Press story, published earlier today, about Epstein's life on and around the island. Here's the relevant passage:

Epstein built a stone mansion with cream-colored walls and a bright turquoise roof surrounded by several other structures including the maids' quarters and a massive, square-shaped white building on one end of the island. Workers told each other it was a music room fitted with a grand piano and acoustic walls. Its gold dome flew off during the deadly 2017 hurricane season.

While this explanation is somewhat believable — Epstein is a classically-trained pianist— the wording suggests it is more of a rumor than a commonly-known fact. Either way, it's not exactly clear why Epstein would position a "music room" so far away from every other structure on the island.

The second claim — "its gold dome flew off during the deadly 2017 hurricane season" — is more supported. Google Earth satellites clearly captured the dome on August 10, 2017, but it's not seen at all in photographs taken on September 7, 2017, or in any subsequent image. A pair of substantial hurricanes, Irma and Maria, struck the U.S. Virgin Islands between those two dates.

The "temple" has several strange features, including a door designed to prevent people from leaving

Certain features of the "temple" raise even more questions. When INSIDER consulted James Both, a contractor and engineer based in Chicago, he first pointed to the wooden door. "It's styled like what you might see on a castle, with what appears to be a reinforcing lock bar across the face," he said. "What makes it peculiar is that if you wanted to keep people out, the bar would be placed inside the building, [but the] locking bar appears to be placed on the outside ... as if it were intended to lock people in."

Downhill from the structure, at the end of a service path that branches from the main road leading to the building, lies what appears to be a smaller structure or entrance. Here's what it currently looks like on Apple Maps (notice the lack of a dome):

Image
3D satellite image of building on Jeffrey Epstein's private island
Downhill from the main building, at the end of a service path, sits another, smaller structure.
Apple Maps
The smaller structure is significant if only because it could theoretically offer a second method of accessing or leaving the larger building, which in turn would suggest the presence of a subterranean structure beneath it.

This possibility has gained some currency among online conspiracy theorists, some of whom believe Epstein erected the building to serve as a secluded facility for abusing children. Others have floated the hypothesis that it conceals an elevator shaft, which in turn accesses a subterranean lair where the same abuse occurred. Both groups have referred to the building as a "temple."

There is some evidence that the larger building and the smaller structure are related to one another. According to historical satellite imagery made available by Google Earth, both were constructed sometime between 2009 and 2013.

In August 2009, nothing existed on the southwest corner of the island:

Image

By February 2013, however, both structures (and newly widened paths leading to them) were clearly visible from above:

Image
Southwest corner of Little St. James Island in 2013
Google Earth
But Both, the Chicago contractor and engineer, said the smaller structure looked less like a secret entrance and more like a cistern for storing or treating water, a necessity for bringing plumbing to the more remote parts of the island. Another possibility, he added, was "a small caretaker's shack which might include equipment for maintaining the property."

As for a secret elevator and lair: "It is absolutely possible to install a dwelling and elevator underneath the structure." The main caveat, however, was privacy: "If an elevator was built there, [there] would most likely be a record with the vendor who installed the elevator, as they typically require yearly maintenance and inspection. ... A simple stairwell would be a better option if someone wanted to conceal their activities at the location."

All of the attention hasn't been uniformly conspiratorial. In 2017, the Twitter user The War Economy assembled what is likely the most comprehensive resource about Little St. James, including the identities of several architects who helped design the island's buildings. However, those architects provided their services long before the temple-like building first appeared.

INSIDER contacted Epstein's personal attorney as well as the Department of Public Works for the U.S. Virgin Islands to glean more information about the building's purpose, but neither responded by presstime.

If you know anything about this building — or want to share your personal theory about its purpose — please get in touch.

Item #14:

The Island: This is the holy grail. This is what is on the horizon for some actors/producers and directors that will ruin them for all time. Until two weeks ago, I would have thought the chances for anything leaking from this was zero. People kept their mouths shut before even when the feds were questioning lots of people. The thing is though, lots of those people lied to the feds. Some were granted immunity and still lied. Why? Going to jail for lying to the government gets you Martha Stewart time and a book deal. Telling the truth gets you jail for a long time and no career or friends when you get out. Can you imagine a place where Hollywood types and rich executives from around the world can gather in one place and have sex with underage boys and girls without any interference from any governments or parents? Yeah, well there was such a place. There probably is a replacement somewhere. The problem is in finding it. When people are flying in from different corners of the globe, it can be tough. When your only choice before was to fly in a private plane to a private island, people knew where it was. I think there is some shady stuff going down in Joe Francis Land, but nothing like the hundreds of teen boys and girls that were raped and abused and forced to be with men for weeks and months on end. Apparently with all types of local governments looking into sexual assaults and rapes committed by Hollywood people coming into the light, the situation on the island they all thought they had carefully extricated themselves from is back. Could be barely back or could be back where everyone goes to jail. Today I am just going to focus on three of the players. They all have been on the island. They all have done some horrible things to tween boys and girls. No one they were with on the island was anywhere close to being the legal age of consent. So, most likely to flip and throw everyone under the bus is this A list mostly movie actor who is an Academy Award winner. He is the one who almost killed several of the boys to the point where his host no longer invited him. Our actor had a preference for tweens who didn't speak English. He didn't want to hear anything they had to say. Probably one of the cruelest people around. He lied to the feds like crazy the first time around and said he only went to the island to fish and lay out and relax. He also told the feds he never saw anything happen with anyone and that he usually was alone when there. He is by far facing the most time in jail if caught so would first flip our second a-hole. A few years ago it looked like this A list director was going down. He never even was interviewed by the feds that I can find. Apparently he always went to the island via a boat just because he is smarter than most and didn't want any record. No record means the feds didn't even know he was a guest on the island. Our director would come for 24-48 hours of nonstop sex. Apparently he would take enough drugs to stay awake the entire time. The host flew in guys the director always wanted but was afraid to go near in Hollywood. In Hollywood, he would never go below 16 or 17. On the island, he would go way lower. One person I think would actually kill himself rather than face any kind of public scrutiny is this permanent A list director. He too was interviewed by the feds but said it was all relaxation. Funny how the relaxation never included his wife. It was just him and a bunch of tween girls he made call him grandpa. Apparently there was not much sex but he assaulted the girls and touched them and made them touch him. He took a lot of photos. I don't know if the photos exist. My guess is the feds thing before probably would have scared him to death. He seems to have recovered though because he is definitely been back to his creepy self the past 18 months or so. There will be way more than these three who go down if it happens. There are probably a dozen A list types who spent time on the island.

Host/airplane: Jeffrey Epstein/"The Lolita Express"
Island: Little St. James, in the U.S. Virgin Islands
A list actor: Kevin Spacey
A list director: Bryan Singer
Permanent A list director: Woody Allen
A listers: Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, , Stephen Hawking Prince Andrew, Chris Tucker, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, former Treasury Secretary and Harvard president Larry Summers, Naomi Campbell, and scientist Stephen Pinker, Alan Dershowitz, billionaire creep Ron Burkle, Clinton confidant Gayle Smith (who served on Barack Obama's National Security Council)

Everything We Know About Jeffrey Epstein’s Private ‘Pedophile Island’

By Matt Stieb

A common misnomer when referring to the lavish holdings of convicted sex offender and alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein: He has not one but two private islands in the Caribbean. About a mile southeast of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands lies the 75-acre Little St. James, which Epstein bought through an LLC in 1998 for $7.95 million. He later added the 165-acre Great St. James Island for the reported price of $18 million in 2016. Below is everything we know about the islands, from their disturbing nicknames, to the alleged crimes that occurred there, to the mysterious temple on Great St. James.

The alleged crimes
Alleged victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre claimed in a 2015 lawsuit that she was a “sex slave” for Epstein, and that she was abused in his homes in New York, New Mexico, Florida, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she was allegedly forced into “an orgy with numerous other under-aged girls.” She also states that she “was forced to have sexual relations with [Prince Andrew] when she was a minor” at Epstein’s Little St. James estate.

Additionally, the islands would be the likely site of any possible financial crimes related to the criminal investigation run by the Southern District of New York’s Public Corruption Unit, as Epstein ran his mysterious offshore business, the Financial Trust Company, from there.

What is on the islands?
Located between St. Thomas and St. John, as of 2008 Little St. James Island featured a staff of 70, five buildings, and a “flamingo-stocked lagoon.” When Epstein first bought it, he stripped the native vegetation, adorned it with palm trees, and placed two giant flags on both ends of the island. Epstein’s residence on the island is a stone mansion with cream-colored walls and a turquoise roof.

Before he (kind 0f) went to prison, Epstein commissioned a renovation to Little St. James. Per the Times: “The villa will occupy the island’s promontory, which offers views of the Atlantic on one side and the Caribbean on the other. It will have a separate library to house Mr. Epstein’s 90,000 volumes, a Japanese bathhouse and what he calls a ‘Ziegfeld’ movie theater.”

The larger, more recently purchased Great St. James Island is currently — and illegally — under construction. In December 2018, the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources issued a stop-work order to Epstein for not adhering to environmental regulations. Not letting the law get in the way, the New York Post reports, “there has been unauthorized work on the island since the stop work order was issued.” The plan for the complex includes an amphitheater and an “underwater office and pool,” according to the Virgin Islands Daily News.

What’s that about a temple?
On a hill on the southwest point of Little St. James Island, there is a temple painted with blue and white stripes and topped with a golden dome. As Business Insider describes it: “The front is flanked by statues painted in gold; one of them appears to be the trident-wielding Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, while two others look like birds perched on the corners of the roof. It is surrounded by a line of palm trees and a terrace with a labyrinth motif. Finally, the exterior seems to incorporate an optical illusion, to create the impression that the exterior windows and door are set within carved flanges.”

According to island workers who spoke with the Associated Press, the building may have been designed as a music studio, outfitted with a grand piano and acoustic walls. (Epstein is a classically trained pianist.)

Business Insider also contacted engineer and contractor James Both, who noticed a few suspicious details about the temple. “It’s styled like what you might see on a castle, with what appears to be a reinforcing lock bar across the face,” he said. “What makes it peculiar is that if you wanted to keep people out, the bar would be placed inside the building, [but the] locking bar appears to be placed on the outside … as if it were intended to lock people in.” From this perspective, sound-dampening walls sound much more suspicious.

The nicknames
Epstein called the islands “Little St. Jeff” and “Big St. Jeff,” though others haven’t been as solipsistic — or generous. “Everybody called it ‘Pedophile Island,’” St. Thomas boat operator Kevin Goodrich told the AP. “It’s our dark corner.” Other names have included “Orgy Island” and “Island of Sin.”

Don’t try to snorkel there
According to the Associated Press, when guides took scuba divers to spots near the coast of Little St. James, “security guards would walk to the water’s edge.” In a similar spirit, when Epstein bought Great St. James, he shut down Christmas Cove, where locals and tourists would order pizza and have it delivered by boat.

3D satellite image of building on Jeffrey Epstein's private island
Downhill from the main building, at the end of a service path, sits another, smaller structure.Apple Maps
The smaller structure is significant if only because it could theoretically offer a second method of accessing or leaving the larger building, which in turn would suggest the presence of a hidden structure underneath it.

But Both, the Chicago contractor and engineer, said the smaller structure looked less like a secret entrance and more like a cistern for storing or treating water, a necessity for bringing plumbing to the more remote parts of the island. So Was QAnon … Right?
By Max Read

If anything, the QAnon adherent are too optimistic. Photo: Maddie McGarvey/Bloomberg via Getty Images
Over Independence Day weekend, as most of the rest of us set off fireworks and grilled at cookouts, a cadre of conspiracy obsessives awaited the fulfillment of a message-board prophecy. In its broadest strokes, QAnon, as the expansive and complicated theory to which these people have dedicated their energy is known, claims that a group within the federal government has been conducting a secret investigation into a network of elite pedophiles. On the Fourth of July, or maybe on the fifth — depending on which version of the theory you subscribe to — with the nation watching, John F. Kennedy Jr., who faked his own death 20 years ago this month, would reveal himself, and then, as QAnon interpreter Will Sommer puts it, “team up with Trump and ship a huge number of top Democrats off to Guantanamo Bay” for their participation in these global child-sex rings.

Of course, this wild theory turned out to be bogus. They got the date wrong: July 4 and 5 both passed without incident. It wasn’t until July 6 that the feds handed out an indictment over a global underage sex-trafficking ring implicating U.S. presidents, heads of government, top lawyers, world-famous actors, and a member of the English royal family. And, to be fair, JFK Jr. didn’t emerge from hiding. Otherwise, though, the Saturday arrest of well-connected financier and convicted sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein on one count of sex trafficking and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking went a long way toward fulfilling the QAnon prediction — and therefore raised a troubling question: Did QAnon turn out to be kind of, well, right?

Epstein, the federal indictment alleges, “created a vast network of underage victims for him to sexually exploit, often on a daily basis.” He’s said to have groomed girls as young as 14 in his mansions in New York and Palm Beach, and alleged to have forced them to have sex with the powerful people who ran in his circles. One woman says that she was coerced into sex with both superlawyer Alan Dershowitz and the Prince of Wales’s younger brother Prince Andrew; President Bill Clinton, as the right-wing press is fond of pointing out, was a frequent guest on Epstein’s jet, which was apparently nicknamed the “Lolita Express” by locals on the U.S. Virgin Islands hideaway where Epstein allegedly hosted orgies.

If you believe the most sweeping version of the allegations, Epstein and a handful of helpers were running what was in essence a mobile teenage-prostitution ring catering to the one percent aboard his private jet and in his palatial estates — themselves decked out in full occult-orgy fashion, with a mysterious Eastern European hostess, a custom erotic chess board, and “a life-size female doll in a wedding dress hanging from a chandelier.” Until this weekend, he’d managed to escape justice, thanks to a strange leniency from top prosecutors, including Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance and former U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, now Trump’s Secretary of Labor. One-percenter sex rings? Creepy mansions rife with dark symbolism? A culture of impunity emanating from the highest levels of government? That sure sounds like QAnon.

But it’s not quite QAnon. In many details, the Epstein case is QAnon’s inverse. The charges aren’t coming from a zombie JFK Jr., who faked his own death to escape the system, but from the establishment-aligned U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York. Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring seems possibly to have been a sort of awful side hustle to a real business that involved money laundering, or offshore banking, or even just blackmailing and ponzi scheming, rather than the center of a fantastical satanic cult based out of a pizza parlor. (Though, don’t think too hard about the fact that Epstein once said that his dinner parties were “like eating pizza at the ballet.”)

Most conspicuously, in the world of QAnon, Donald Trump is a crusading savior, the face of a deep-state conspiracy to expose the moral depravity of the global elite and bring a cabal of child molestors to justice. In real life, Trump was friendly with Epstein. “I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” he told New York in 2002. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”

Trump is not the only person who’s known for decades about Epstein’s conspicuous preference for young women. The journalist Vicky Ward says that references to Epstein’s abuse in a 2003 article she wrote for Vanity Fair were killed by editors. Stories emerged anyway; many of the details of his alleged crimes have been extensively reported over the last fifteen years, and the charges levied against Epstein over the weekend are extremely similar to those brought against him in 2008. The “conspiracy theory” of a network of predators centered around a wealthy enabler, protected by the privileged cohort in which he ran, was easily found in the Miami Herald, or on Gawker, or pieced together through court documents. If QAnon was kind of right, it was as a twisted, telephone-game rendition of a story already out in the open, filtered through Satanist moral panic, right-wing partisanship, Christian prophecy, and Kennedy nostalgia.

What was surprising about this weekend’s news wasn’t the specifics of the allegations, but the fact that anything happened regarding them. Back in 2008, thanks to his sweetheart plea deal with Alex Acosta, Epstein served only 13 months of an 18 month sentence, mostly on work release, for the reduced crime of soliciting an underage prostitute. As more victims came forward and new details emerged, Epstein remained free, and the powerful men who once made up his social circle untainted by their relationships to him. The name Jeffrey Epstein became synonymous with, as Michelle Goldberg puts it, “deep corruption among mostly male elites across parties, and the way the very rich can often purchase impunity for even the most loathsome of crimes.”

If anything, QAnon was a more palatable version of this story — a rendition in which elites spent decades secretly working toward justice, in which the forces arrayed against them were supernaturally malevolent rather than simply rich and networked, and in which the president of the United States is a covert agent for good, rather than a former Epstein acquaintance and enabler. Or rather than, for that matter, a multiply accused sex abuser himself.

In that light, QAnon sounds less like a paranoid conspiracy than a kind of optimistic fantasy. The world of QAnon isn’t a happy one, but as the Epstein case demonstrates, neither is the world the rest of us live in. At least QAnon promises justice, victory, a resurrected JFK Jr., and a nice bit of drama over a holiday weekend.

Pinker and Summers? Forgot that.

It's like a dream bounty. While we're at it, can I have Sam Harris too? Malcolm Gladwell? Fukuyama? Peterson? Who's the guy who owns the TED talks? Would it be petty of me to want David Brooks and Tom Friedman thrown in? They would be like cherries pinned atop a triple-layer Schadenfreude pastry.

Actually, Pinker and Summers is just fucking perfect. Literally the two most annoying, perniciously consequential, hegemony-reinforcing dickswinging blowhards playing intellectual leaders within the middlebrow thinkspace. In fact, as Dr. Pangloss, erm sorry, Pinker himself might say: This is the best of all possible worlds.

-

PS - Sure QAnon might be "right," as to me it still appears to be a disinfo fog campaign to insulate against exposure of the Epstein matter. Or maybe it was a kind of trolling riff, a fictional version done more for someone's lulz. In any case, now especially, the less said about it the better. The disinfo never goes away and even if the lawyers and prosecutors keep the cases straight most people are going to be constructing strange hybrids of bits remembered from real stories and fake stories.

.

Also, there's one Mueller angle I'd love to see, which would be him implicated in the 2007 coverup. But we have no idea what this "intelligence cover" was, if it existed, what agency stepped in to talk to Acosta, if it happened. For now it could be just him talking out his ass some years ago.

.

Apologies for a consumerist/fantasy football post about a reality that is anything but.

This is probably already upthread but I missed or forgot it was Nick Bryant himself who was first in the press to expose the Epstein contacts list leaked by his butler Alfredo Rodriguez (who died in prison). This was published in Gawker in Jan 2015, which was shut down after the (presumably unrelated) suit backed by Peter Thiel in Aug 2016.

Comment by Kris Milligan (from FB).

Nick Bryant has been researching and writing about child trafficking and trafficking networks for 18 years.

He was the prime mover in uploading Jeffery Epstein’s black book to the Internet: https://gawker.com/here-is-pedophile-bi ... 1681383992

Bryant also uploaded a myriad of Epstein’s passenger manifests to the Internet: https://gawker.com/here-is-pedophile-bi ... 1681383992

Bryant can discuss the Palm Beach Police Department’s investigation of Epstein, and also the early cover-up of Epstein’s activities by state and federal officials.

According to victims of Epstein, they were pandered to Epstein’s powerful cronies, but the indictment against Epstein doesn’t name the additional perps who molested the underage girls pandered by Epstein. So, unless additional individuals are indicted, the Department of Justice continues to be part and parcel of a cover-up.

Bryant is the author of the The Franklin Scandal, which is the only book to tell the tale of an interstate child trafficking network and its cover-up. The network elucidated by The Franklin Scandal bears eerie similarities to the Epstein trafficking network.

Nick Bryant's writing has recurrently focused on the plight of disadvantaged children in the United States, and he’s been published in numerous national journals, including the Journal of Professional Ethics, Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Journal of Social Distress and Homelessness, Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, and Journal of School Health. He is the co-author of America’s Children: Triumph or Tragedy, addressing the medical and developmental problems of lower socioeconomic children in America. He has also contributed a chapter on child trafficking to Global Perspectives on Dissociative Disorders: Individual and Societal Oppression, a book addressing various facets of dissociative disorders that features chapters from an international group of psychiatrists and psychologists.
