BARCELONA (Reuters) - Antivirus creator John McAfee, 75, was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona after the Spanish high court had authorised his extradition to the U.S., the Catalan justice department said, confirming an earlier report from El Mundo newspaper.

Known for his eccentric behaviour and videos, McAfee, 75, was a pioneer of anti-virus software and indicted in Tennessee on tax evasion charges. He also was charged in a cryptocurrency fraud case in New York.

Spain's high court agreed to extradite McAfee to the United States, a court document released on Wednesday said.

McAfee's blockchain based "deadman switch" $whackd turns out to not only be real, but to actually involve a 31 tb stash of data. Right now that stash is only visible to the counterparties and the id of those counterparties is unknown. Still, a pretty fascinating development in the story of a deeply and justifiably paranoid who lived and breathed blackmail for his entire career.

For all the fuss about "hacking" in the past decade, the weakest point in any such system is people, and most leaks and compromises involve bribery, blackmail and "plata o plomo" style intimidation. Even if the material is genuine it is likely none of it will see the light of day.

Very much hope to be proven wrong, though.
