In "The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI’s Manufactured War on Terrorism" (Ig Publishing, January 15, 2013), Schuster Institute Senior Fellow Trevor Aaronson analyzed more than 500 federal terrorism prosecutions over ten years and found reason to question whether U.S. law enforcement is actually creating the very enemy we fear.
Aaronson found that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has, "under the guise of engaging in counterterrorism since 9/11, built a network of more than 15,000 informants to infiltrate Muslim communities and ferret out would-be terrorists. The Bureau then provides the means necessary for these would-be terrorists to move forward with a terrorist plot—in some cases even planting specific ideas for attacks."
Few Americans, Aaronson says, realize that “since 9/11 just one organization—the FBI—has been responsible for hatching and financing more terrorist plots in the United States than any other. Not  Al Qaeda, the terrorist network founded by Osama bin Laden and responsible for the 2001 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Not Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Al-Shabaab, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Not any of the other more than 40 U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations.”
"The FBI spends $3 billion every year on counterterrorism, more than it spends on organized crime," says Aaronson. "Some of their counterterrorism activities involve years-long sting operations, and informants working them can receive $100,000 or more for their work."

Some politicians get elected and think they’re heading up the musical equivalent of vaporware. Just a heads up: you may have more power than you’re used to but it’s constrained by the Constitution: both the one ratified by the nascent US federal government and the one adopted by individual states, which are required to use the federal version for a baseline, rather than a high bar they should never feel compelled to clear.
Constitutions in the US apply to everyone, including the checks and balances that are supposed to ensure politicians don’t wield powers they shouldn’t be wielding. So much for that. An Arizona court has decided to abdicate this responsibility to allow a local politician to shut down a particularly tenacious journalist.
It would seem obvious you can’t ask a court for a restraining order that would prevent a journalist from doing their job. Welcome to Arizona, where rights are whatever this particular court says they are, despite plenty of precedent saying otherwise. Here’s Ray Stern, who has composed a righteously indignant response to a local court ruling, with more details on this latest failure to check and/or balance:

Former Elementary School Teacher Sentenced to Life in Prison for Sexually Abusing Children
A former school teacher was sentenced today to life in prison for sexually abusing elementary school students on a U.S. military installation in Germany.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Stefan Zappey sexually abused four of his former elementary school students between 2006 and 2010. At the time, Zappey was a teacher for first through third grade students at an elementary school in Germany. When we’re young, impressionable, and financially incapable of donating significant amounts of money to super PACs, we’re taught that the American government is a system of checks and balances. Civics classes explain there are three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial — all of which are supposed to be independent and equally powerful.
The theory proposed by this instruction suggests all three are dependent on each other. Without equal resistance, the fragile triangle will collapse, with one branch ending up on top of the heap.

This isn’t a good look for the Las Vegas Metro PD, even if it’s completely supported by court precedent. No matter how often law enforcement agencies sling around the phrase “protect and serve,” they have almost no legal obligation to do either of those things.
Sometimes a “failure to intervene” allegation might undermine a cop’s attempt to secure qualified immunity for violations committed by other cops, but when it comes to crimes being committed against regular people, cops simply aren’t legally obliged to stop crimes in progress even when they’re already at the scene.
But this lawsuit is hoping a court might find otherwise. Whether or not it does, it will definitely expose some cops for what they are: lazy opportunists who aren’t really in the life-saving business. Even if the officers are found to be on the right side of judicial precedent, they’re not going to come out of this looking like people who should be employed as police officers.
Las Vegas police officers stood outside listening as a 74-year-old woman was stabbed 68 times and killed by one of her sons in her home, a lawsuit filed Saturday alleged.
