Re-evaluation Co-Counseling info needed

Postby Dreams End » Fri Oct 27, 2006 3:43 pm

The local peace and justice group here in Nashville has evidently been taken over by people associated with something called Re-evaluation Co-Counseling. Originally a split from pre-Scientology Dianetics, it is a therapy movement with political goals along the lines of the New Alliance Party.

I hadn't heard of them...but in my inbox comes an email from a board member of the group saying the RC has taken over the board.

Like NAP, their rhetoric is leftist, and they have an anti-racism focus and do anti-racism workshops all over the place. That's not a bad thing, of course. But there are all sorts of accusations of sexual abuse and cult style methods. Oh...and they think gays are mentally ill.

anyway, I can research the basics, but if anyone has ever worked with them or had firsthand knowledge I'd appreciate it. I'm particularly interested in how they (again, like NAP) take over existing organizations to shape them for their own purposes. They are very fond, for example, of putting on "Leadership Institutes." The one here seems good, but it takes up more than half the time of the staff and seems it was really the RC agenda at work and not the wishes of the member organizations who belong to this local coalition of peace and justice groups.

they no longer seem associated with Dianetics (now Scientology), or any other group...but any group that penetrates other groups for their own agenda is one I'm not happy with.

Please...if anyone has info...let me know. I'll pass it on. The woman who made this public is likely going to find herself in an uncomfortable position. It likely means the group itself will end up disbanding.

a wiki:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-...Counseling

"Re-evaluation Counseling, or RC is the world's major organization for Co-counseling. RC today spans over 40 countries and offers many individuals a cheap or largely free form of counseling and personal healing / growth. Within RC, it's work is seen as focusing on combating societal oppressions such as racism and sexism, and the effects of those oppressions on individuals. The organisation is also involved in a number of political causes of the left / radicalism such as anti-racism, anti-capitalism and similar movements.

Founded by Harvey Jackins and his followers in the 1950s and early 60s, it is headquartered in Seattle, Wash. USA. Jackins, who died in 1999, originally had connections (until about 1954) to Dianetics as well as to unions and some other leftist movements. He created RC from a combination of concepts from Dianetics, psycho-analysis and Marxist philosophy, forming a new therapeutic method based on co-operative and free sharing of time and attention between individuals to each others' problems which he dubbed "co-counselling" and a new overall movement, establishing formal teaching methods and workshops to train co-counsellors, which he termed "Re-evaluation Counselling", delivered through Seattle-based "Personal Counselors", a small company which trained people in his methods, originally founded for the development of Dianetics in 1952. "Personal Counselors", the small headquarters unit of RC in Seattle, provides counseling in a more traditional counselor/client model for fees, primarily to RC leaders or supporters."

"During the 1970's, the RC approach shifted emphasis to deal more with "oppression" issues for a wide variety of "liberation" groups (e.g., women, working class). As a result, many of its publications, workshops and leadership structure(s) are organized by these liberation groups. The RC organization and affiliates formulated an active response to the 9/11 tragedy and played an active role at the 2001 Durban World Conference against Racism. More recently they were involved in events of the 2006 World Social Forum, the main event of which was held in Caracas, and the World Peace Forum 2006, held in Vancouver. 2. When attending external events, RC often presents itself as "United to End Racism" (UER), a method that has been (unfavorably) compared by some to the methods of Scientology, presenting itself through "front" organizations that appear unconnected with the parent body. The RC website does not hide the RC connection with UER, and UER groups sometimes present their ideas as based on Re-evaluation counseling."

"Cult allegations:

Re-evaluation counseling has sometimes been viewed as a cult, or as having cult-like aspects, in part because of Jackins' origins in Dianetics (he was originally the North-West U.S. organiser and a member of L Ron Hubbard's national governing body for Dianetics), which he abandoned in the mid-50s and adapted - therefore his organisation is also sometimes alternatively seen as a "Free Zone" or "Squirrel" (see Scientology beliefs and practices) offshoot of Scientology/Dianetics. RC "members" (the organisation does not have a uniform formal membership structure - membership varies from country to country and is essentially local in nature) have in the past been unaware of the Dianetics origins of RC, but information sharing on the internet has to some extent changed this. The current leadership of RC remain silent on the issue, republishing Jackins' official version of the origins of RC which contains no mention of Dianetics; as most current RC leaders were not in RC until many years after those events, they may simply not know about them, or if they have heard of them, prefer Jackins' own version.

Another aspect of the "cult" label being applied to RC is the combination of leadership charisma, non-criticism of leaders and centralized decision making that Jackins believed was needed to ensure success in "anti-pattern" progress of the RC method. These appear similar to other alleged cults. Within RC these features are percieved as being required "to assist the average counselor in facing the difficulties of maintaining aware focus on the discharge process". The centralised authority of the leadership does not appear anecdotally to extend beyond decisions about who is allowed to attend events and to teach the subjects of RC, lead groups, and other internal matters; there does not appear to be a sustained effort anywhere in the organization to control the outside lives of "members". Therefore a key aspect of cult identification, undue control over members, is undermined in its application to RC. RC does not apply heavy financial charges for basic courses (RC "Fundamentals" classes) or further workshops and in general appears to avoid some of the other behaviors commonly attributed to cults, such as punishments, forced love, etc, although quick google searches do reveal a number of sexual abuse and other allegations leveled against Harvey Jackins dating from the early 80s. These are explored more thoroughly on the Harvey Jackins page.

Another factor that undermines the "cult" label is that leaders and members of Re-evaluation counseling frequently play other important roles in their community as government leaders, educators, non-profit organizers, artists etc. RC encourages members to use it as a tool to help move forward their personal goals and improve their communities, rather than to become insular adherents to some ideology. However, Jackins himself frequently urged members to infiltrate and advocate for RC-style philosophy within mainstream groups, which he termed "wide world change" so this may just be a consequence of this policy. The organization also advocates the formation of groups that promote the principles and style of organization of Reevaluation Counselling groups without disclosing to members their connection with the organization. These groups are called 'naturalized' groups. An example is United to End Racism (UER).

there's much more there.
___________________________________________
"Fascism finds root best in unreality, dysfunction and irresponsibility." - Me

"Speaking the Truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act" -George Orwell

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. Their own website lists 28 principles to follow that look fine.

All about how folks needn't be at odds with each other and getting past emotional stress to be as rational as possible.

Seems fine.
Unless all time and energy gets internalized into the group with touchy-feely I'm Ok you're OK stuff and the bastards out there get forgotten. That seems to me to be the most obvious risk with RC. When feminism blossomed 1970-ish in the New Left, the FBI COINTELPRO operators realized that it was a good way to get the women asking the men why they weren't running more anti-war meetings and further divide the already fractious energies. There is an SF FBI memo that says this very thing.

So that's what I'd look out for, turning focus on 'us' instead of 'them.'

www.rc.org/index.html

Quote:
The Postulates of Re-evaluation Counseling

Re-evaluation Counseling is a theory of human behavior and set of procedures for solving human problems. It is a complex theory, still growing, containing a large amount of information in its details and techniques. Its main assumptions can be summarized at present in the following 28 points:

1.

Rational human behavior is qualitatively different from the behavior of other forms of life. (It is not just more complicated).
2.

The essence of rational human behavior consists of responding to each instant of living with a new response, created afresh at that moment to precisely fit and handle the situation of that moment as that situation is defined by the information received through the senses of the person (other living creatures typically respond with preset, inherited response patterns--"instincts," or with conditioned, equally-rigid modifications or replacements of the inherited response patterns, acquired through experiences of stress).
3.

This ability to create new, exact responses may be defined as human intelligence. It operates by comparing and contrasting new information with that already on file from past experiences and constructing a response based on similarities to past situations but modified to allow for the differences.
4.

Each human with a physically undamaged brain has a large inherent capacity for this rational kind of behavior, very large as compared to the best functioning of presently observable adult humans.
5.

The complexity of our central nervous systems (now estimated to contain at least one-thousand billion individual neurons and a number of possible states of relationship between these neurons larger than the number of atoms in the known universe) has brought us not only human intelligence of a very, very high level but also has conferred on us the capacity to be aware; to notice what is going on while it is going on, to think about the rational processes while they are taking place. This ability or function of awareness is very hard to define or describe, but humans are completely aware when it is present in another person or not, and enjoy it fully in themselves when it is operating.
6.

This complexity of our central nervous systems has also conferred upon us complete freedom of decision. Even though this freedom is denied unendingly and emphatically by the societies in which we live, it still persists and is completely available to us. This complete freedom of decision is not just freedom to make a good decision, to make a rational decision, to make a correct decision. It is an unfettered freedom. We are completely free to make wrong decisions, destructive decisions, irrational decisions as well. Our freedom of choice is unfettered, unlimited.
7.

This complexity has also conferred complete power on each individual, if we define power as the ability to have the universe respond to us in the way we rationally wish it to (not in the usual oppressive society's definition of power as "the ability to enforce our will upon other intelligences, other humans").
8.

The natural emotional tone of a human being is zestful enjoyment of life. The natural relationship between any two human beings is loving affection, communication and co-operation.
9.

The special human capacity for rational response can be interrupted or suspended by an experience of physical or emotional distress. When this occurs information input through the senses then stores as an unevaluated and rigid accumulation, exhibiting the characteristics of a very complete, literal recording of all aspects of the incident.
10.

Immediately after the distress experience is concluded or at the first opportunity thereafter, the distressed human spontaneously seeks to claim the aware attention of another human. If he or she is successful in claiming and keeping this aware attention of the other person, a profound process of what has been called discharge ensues.
11.

Discharge is signalized externally by one or more of a precise set of physical processes. These are: crying or sobbing (with tears), trembling with cold perspiration, laughter, angry shouting and vigorous movement with warm perspiration (tantrum), live, interested talking; and in a slightly different way, yawning, often with scratching and stretching. Discharge requires considerable time for completion.
12.

During discharge, the residue of the distress experience or experiences is being recalled and reviewed. (Not necessarily with awareness.)
13.

Rational evaluation and understanding of the information received during the distress experience occurs automatically following discharge and only following discharge. It occurs only to the degree that discharge is completed. On completion, the negative and anti-rational effects of the experience are completely eliminated.
14.

As a result of long-term conditioning of the entire population, the spontaneous attempt to claim the aware attention of another person and proceed to discharge and evaluation is almost always rebuffed. (Don't cry. Be a big boy. Get a grip on yourself. Don't be afraid. Watch your temper.) Applied to small children, these rebuffs begin and perpetuate the conditioning of the population which prevents discharge.
15.

Undischarged and unevaluated recordings of distress experiences become compulsive patterns of behaving, feeling, and verbalizing when restimulated by later experiences which resemble them strongly enough. Under such conditions of restimulation the rational faculty of the human is again suspended and the new information of the current experience is added to the rigid distress pattern making it more far-reaching in its effect and more easily restimulated in the future.
16.

We have called the association of distress recordings from the past with the current scene, and the resulting rigid, "inappropriate" responses "restimulation." This kind of association must have been originally a decision, a decision apparently motivated by the hope that bringing up and "restimulating" the distress recordings would create a possibility of discharging them (if the attention of another person could be found or some other contradiction to the recordings could be achieved). The repetitive attempts at this kind of decision and the resulting lack of success (since we seldom found the resource of contradiction and resulting discharge we hoped for) tended to make restimulation into a "habit" and a pattern.
It is possible (and profitable) to decide not to be restimulated. Such a decision can be repeated as many times as necessary.
17.

The effect of an undischarged distress experience recording in "playing" the bearer through a compulsive, repetitive re-enactment of distress experiences is an adequate explanation for all observable irrational behavior in human beings, of whatever kind or degree.
18.

Any human being, and human beings in general, can become free of the restrictions, inhibitions and aberrations of accumulated distress experience recordings by reinstating a relationship with some other person's or persons' aware attention and allowing the discharge and re-evaluation processes to proceed to completion.
19.

Any infant can be allowed to remain free of aberration by protection from distress experiences and by allowing full discharge and re-evaluation on the ones that do occur.
20.

Though a greater degree of awareness, rationality, understanding and skill on the part of the person whose attention is used ("the second person," "the counselor") provides for more rapid and more complete discharge and re-evaluation, the process is workable if even a small degree of awareness is available and if even a roughly correct attitude is maintained by the second person.
21.

By "taking turns," i.e., by exchanging the two roles periodically ("Co-Counseling"), two people can become increasingly effective with each other and help free each other from accumulated distress patterns to a profound degree.
22.

Distress patterns which have become too reinforced by repeated restimulation can become chronic, i.e., surround and envelop all behavior and activity. To discharge these requires initiative, skill, and resource on the part of the second person and considerable time for handling, but they are not different in origin or effect from lighter distresses, and can also be completely discharged and evaluated.
23.

Distress experiences result from any unfavorable aspect of the environment. In our present state of civilization, the bulk of early distress experiences of any child result exactly from the dramatized distress recordings of adults which the adults received from earlier generations when they were children. We have a sort of transmission of aberration by contagion here--well-meaning, adults unawarely but systematically infecting each new, healthy-to-begin-with child with their burdening distress patterns.
24.

The irrationalities of society (enforcements, punishments, exploitations, prejudices, group conflicts, wars) are reflections of the individual human distress patterns which have become fossilized in the society and often enforced by the rigidities of the society itself.
25.

No individual human has an actual rational conflict of interest with another human. No group of humans has an actual, rational conflict of interest with another group of humans. Given rationality, the actual desires of each individual and each group can best be served by mutual co-operation.
26.

Nothing prevents communication, agreement, and co-operation between any humans except distress patterns. Given knowledge of their nature, these distress patterns can be coped with, handled, and removed.
27.

Any individual or group can act rationally first without waiting for rational action on the part of someone else, and can take control of the situation by so doing.
28.

It is always safe to be rational. Knowledge of the above information can be applied to all aspects of living and to all relationships with real profit and success.

Re-evaluation Counseling is a meaningful and useful description of the nature of human beings and the source of their difficulties. It is a rediscovery of the workable means of undoing human distress. It is a system of procedures for expediting this discharge and re-evaluation process. It is a promising and successful alternative to individual and social irrationality and distress.

"Re-evaluation Counseling," as a title, correctly denotes the collection of insights into the actual nature of reality which we have assembled as the result of our practice and thinking, in the areas of human thought and activities where this actual reality has been occluded or undiscovered as a result of lack of information, misinformation, distress patterns, and the operations of the oppressive societies.

I have access to wiki and to the guidelines as published by the group itself. And I'm not going to try to argue about whether they are good guys are not...but I would advise people when looking into groups to look beyond their stated policies and goals and look toward the group culture...that's the issue here...well, that and their anti-gay stuff.

The emailer in question suggested that RC makes a habit of taking over groups for their own purposes. This is very similar to NAP which took over the Reform Party. In any event, it's that kind of info I'm looking for..has anyone seen or heard of this before?

They have a front group called "United to End Racism" which I found very interesting because in L.A. I ran across a couple of anti-racist groups that gave me weird vibes. I agreed with their goals (saw them at various protests) but there was a sort of glassy eyed vibe that made me uncomfortable.

Anyway, I guess I'm hoping folks like wordspeak who are longtime activists may have run across them before.

"They have a long history going back to the 1960s of infiltrating political movements," says Margaret Deirdre O'Hartigan, a Portland researcher and writer who has chronicled the influence of Re-Evaluation Counseling in the Pacific Northwest. This venerable tradition of allowing incognito organizers to proselytize among those dedicated to unrelated political causes is referred to in the group's argot as "naturalizing" or "Wygelian" work.

Yet peer counseling proponents are rarely content with being mere foot soldiers for a selected ideological cause. According to O'Hartigan, they frequently "work to establish a monopoly to exclude people from power who are not members of RC."
In Oregon, where co-counseling is rapidly gaining ground, O'Hartigan asserts that its advocates hold leadership positions in the state's Democracy Project, Tools for Diversity, an anti-racist political faction, and a surfeit of like minded groups. Indeed, RC is gradually entering the mainstream political process. For example, Beverly Stein, a Portland politician and avowed RC supporter currently presides over the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, which coordinates county public services and controls an estimated budget of over $900 million.

"I've found it to be a powerful tool for listening to people," she informed reporter Bill Redden when asked about her affiliation with the shadowy group (PDXS, June 7-20, 1993). Yet this is merely the tip of the iceberg. The organization's influence extends all the way to Washington DC.

"I was one of two hundred people from around the U.S. invited to the White House this morning for a breakfast meeting and workshop with U.S. President Bill Clinton on the issue of hate crimes," recounts veteran RC organizer Cherie Brown. [2]

As head of the highly acclaimed National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), Brown is credited with providing "the most successful 'university in diversity' training workshops in government agencies, organizations, and businesses," according to journalist Leo Lazo (Outpost, November 12, 1997). These seminars and classes given to federal bureaucrats and corporate executives, Lazo asserts, are based on concepts forged within the co-counseling community. Although centered in Washington DC, the RC front group is national in scope, claiming some "50 city-based leadership teams" and over three dozen campus chapters.

The prominence of the IRCC in the human rights movement can also be evidenced by its notable presence at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. While Hillary Clinton waxed eloquent on topics ranging from female genital mutilation to global poverty at the UN-sponsored summit, some 300 RCers as they like to be called, held over two dozen workshops on "women's health, internalized oppression, women in leadership, mothering, disabilities, and ending racism."

The growth of the NCBI and other affiliated groups dedicated to easing racial tensions has even given rise to a new operative paradigm in the public policy milieu known as the "Prejudice Reduction" (PR) model.

"As a diversity training model, PR applies the RC framework of exploring and healing past hurts, focusing on the hurts of being a target or a colluder [sic] with prejudice and bigotry," explains Patti DeRosa in Bright Ideas (Winter, 1996). Yet De Rosa questions the establishmentarian nature of the RC experience. "The emphasis is on the prejudice, not necessarily institutional oppression. By focusing on personal hurt, it may obscure the very real differences in power," she asserts.

However, RC have little time for this type of constructive criticism, as the organization considers its presence a solitary bulwark against a murderous society which is covertly targeting various demographic groups for imminent "destruction."

The group offer dire warnings of an impending secular apocalypse should humanity fail to heed its clarion cry of personal liberation. University of Ulster academic Dr. Dennis Tourish articulates the dark prophecy promulgated by RC leaders:

"Nuclear holocaust and incalculable horror is in prospect. Furthermore it follows that the rapid growth of RC, or at least the spread of its influence in important 'wide world' organizations, is necessary to prevent catastrophe. This doom-laden analysis, with implications that the current small group of RC activists bear an inordinate responsibility for saving the planet in the immediate future, is characteristic of all cult organizations, and is a primary lever for extracting maximum commitment (alongside a minimum critique from the group's members) . . ." I agree.

I am wondering about the Nashville peace and justice group. Did RC undermine their work? Did it disband because of RC involvement? And does anyone know of other groups that have been disrupted?

As for their Gay Policy - it is an insidious form of "reparative therapy."
