Sepka

Curious what happened with the Sepka comment in the Displacement thread.

I note that it's already drawn a "warning" but we have pretty clear policies on racist speech here.

Even though hours have passed, I'd retroactively suspend Sepka.

We could say that the mods convened and decided that a suspension is in order.

I don't want to step on DrVolin's toes, however, so he'd have to be in agreement.

I'll go along with the majority, of course. I felt it was worth at least a warning. I didn't specifically feel it wasn't worth more.

Am I wrong in my impression that Sepka has been both warned and suspended for this before?

I can't answer your question, WR. If Sepka's been suspended, it was before my time as a mod.

It wouldn't be surprising, but I don't remember it.

Heh. I don't feel like we're effective moderators.

Has Sepka been suspended? I think it's safe to conclude the three of us are the only troika in town these days. I'm gonna poke around and see if I can even figure out how to suspend people....

I don't know, I think I'm pretty effective during the few hours per day that I'm able to be here, but maybe mods should be here more often than I'm able? When I got this "job" Jeff said that I needn't change my board habits to be here more often, and I tend to agree with him.

A. Despite the recent downturn, I believe that we still have a pretty darn good bunch here, and that for the most part, it's good to let them settle things on their own.

B. I've let it be known publicly, on countless occasions, that we can't be here all of the time, so the rabble need to alert us to any problems via PM, or the reporting function.

Suspending people is EASY, btw!

Just go to the Moderator Control Panel and then click on "Banning" in the Options menu.

As for Sepka, can we agree that he/she gets no more warnings? I vote that the next time any of us needs to speek to him/her, we give him/her one week on the sidelines.

And yeah, despite Jeff's recent, but short-lived return, it does seem like we're the law at this point. That is, of course, unless there are stealth-mods among us, but getting an answer to that question is proving to be much more difficult than I ever would have imagined.

Let's assume we're it and behave like it. No more warnings for Sepka.

I try to work through PMs first. I usually post here when I intervene privately with someone. Sometimes I give a general warning in a thread as a way to get people back on topic. I find it generally works. Some days, though, I feel like a very light pruning of the membership would improve things significantly for everyone.
