Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: films of a certain quality
Grizzly Man, by Werner Herzog, is available "on demand" now on Sundance. Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend were mauled by grizzly bears in Alaska. He was on a self-proclaimed mission to "save" the bears from poachers but he seems bipolar and out of his mind. He wants to be a bear. For example, he fondles one of the bear's shit because it was inside of her and still warm. He seems excited by this. He does more harm than good, it can be argued, by getting the bears used to humans who might then kill them. He walks right up to them, tries to pet them.. in his 13th summer (unlucky!) in 2003, he overstayed his welcome. He had a TV show called "the Grizzly Man Diaries."
It's fascinating! A look into the mind of someone driven insane by human culture and trying to find a way to live outside of it.

The print of Beyond the Black Rainbow that is on Netflix is very different from the version I saw early last year -- and much better. I was pleasantly surprised and will be re-watching tonight. Still flawed and fragmentary but that does suit the subject matter.

Thanks for reminding me. Just moved that up to #2 on the queue, after Haywire. Just sent in American: The Bill Hicks Story and am looking forward to a second dose of, ahem, Ergo Proxy tonight. What a wonderful world this is! Did you see how Netflix stock like doubled overnight from $90 something to $170 something?Wombaticus Rex wrote:The print of Beyond the Black Rainbow that is on Netflix is very different from the version I saw early last year -- and much better. ^^Looking forward to that. My most cynical critic friend loved it. Last time he said that was either Being John Malkovich or Ghost Dog, but either way, perfect films.
Also, this:

I have been re-watching it a lot lately, a triumph of pacing and photography. I dream of contributing something that good before I go.

Saw "Beyond the Black Rainbow." First two sequences (institute promotional video & interview with inmate) make for great opening. Fetishistic attention to design really pays off. Highly formal technique, maintenance of mood throughout. Creep factor, off the fucking charts. No concessions to standard tropes for signaling or raising tension, or other cheap narrative. Long. Obviously not for everyone.

My thoughts pretty much, summed up a different way. I'll watch stuff like Beyond the Black Rainbow, Into the Void, Samsara, and so forth more so for just the mood or ambiance rather than expecting an actual narrativeJackRiddler wrote:Saw "Beyond the Black Rainbow."
