Did anybody mention this yet? NASA and Virginia (individualy) always sets off alarm bells for me...

Quote:
His father worked for NASA on the Mars Viking Lander program in the 70s, developing the camera that made the first pictures from the Mars surface.

My name is Jim Cunningham. And welcome to 'Controlling Fear
From the scene in the movie where Donnie's Health Class is watching Jim's Video:

Jim Cunningham came back into the frame.

"All over America, people have come together to join hands. People who believe that human life is absolutely too important, too valuable, and too precious to be controlled by Fear."

Cunningham stepped closer into the camera until his face filled the screen.

"Hello, my name is Jim Cunningham. And welcome to 'Controlling Fear'."

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Interesting. This movie came out long before "The Power of Nightmares" made it obvious ( www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/T...cs_of_Fear ) but the theme of controlling fear and being controlled by fear is clearly outlined in the movie.

Prior to 9/11 the theme of fear, and being controlled by fear, was much less clear to Americans. (Note - maybe not - after all what was Mutual Assured Destruction all about - being controlled by fear)

On the topic of 911 note Eddie Darko's car - the Porsche 911.

From the 88 Reasons to watch Donnie Darko site web.mit.edu/djh/Public/do...easons.txt there is a lot of 8 and 88 connections listed. Probably too many to be coincidental.

Some tried to novelize the movie. Can be read here:
www.angelfire.com/film2/animagess/

NASA Dad
As I'd mentioned before:

"I find fascinating that the writer/director Richard Kelly was on 24 years old when the film was shot. He recieved only $9K to write and direct the film. www.imdb.com/name/nm0446819/bio How does someone so young, from a small town in Virginia, have enough insight into parapolitics to pull this off? Not like he could read up on it at RI then

Young people coming out of nowhere with surprising work should always raise skeptical eyebrows."

My point was that it was surprising that someone so young could have such understanding to write, and even more could get the ACCESS TO RESOURCES TO FILM a parapolitical movie is very interesting. Clearly this kid was connected to some high rollers to get this done.

The good find about NASA Dad may be a start to understanding where this all came from......

Good points, JD
Also of (less concrete) note is the Carpathian Ridge/Romania/Transylvania/Vampire legend connection. "Carpathian Ridge" is the name given to the place where we see Donnie wake in the opening scene.

A Night in Dracula's Castle
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."

(Wedding Crashers)
(A little sidenote...if one eighth of the attention people are paying to Donnie Darko right now were given to Wedding Crashers, you all might be surprised. Donnie Darko practically advertises its parapolitical subtext, begs to be deep-analyzed. Wedding Crashers on the other hand seems like a pure brainless comedy...but one viewing with RI glasses on might be a revelation. Just saying. Carry on.)

You're right, but we could pick apart "Dodgeball" just the same.

Rawson Marshall Thurber

[edit: fact check! reality check!]
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."
Edited by: thoughtographer at: 4/4/06 12:03 am

Wedding Crashers
OK, maybe when we're sick of taking DD apart we'll switch movies. In the meantime if people are enjoying this let's just focus on that.

I called up Jim Cunningham about this and he asked me to find out if you fear analyzing Donnie Darko.......

Yeah, because Dodgeball involves two guys in DC acting like spies and infiltrating a presidential candidate's family.

I'm bumping the Wedding Crashers thread.
I have an interesting find.

Re: 88?
Just watched the documentary on the young BNP activist, Mark Collett, over at Jeff's "'Young, Nazi and Proud' - profile of a BNP leader" thread. In one segment, Collett was sporting an "88" on one of his t-shirts. The documentary explains the significance of this: "H" is the 8th letter of the a'bet. 88 = HH. "Heil Hitler."

***

That caught my eye because I remember posting this:

Quote:
"88 Reasons To Watch Donnie Darko Again"
written by: Daniel Hernandez
web.mit.edu/djh/Public/donniedarko/88reasons.txt

earlier in this thread. Mr. Hernandez finds 8 and 88 fingerprints all over this film and surrounding environs.

Reading the list again, I see the numbers game there is a stretch, but some of his other observations are interesting.

Southland Tales
Just heard about this yesterday.

The story's prequel is being told in three graphic novels, the first to be released May 31.

What is that red/blue/purple shape at the top of the Southland Tales poster there? is that a flower or is that a pair of hands unfolding?

Also, something new to add...last night I was thinking about the scene where Noah Wiley's character is having the time travel discussion with Donnie....I'm not positive, but I seem to remember that Donnie initiates that conversation, yet it's Noah Wiley that just automatically pulls Roberta Sparrow's book from his bag and hands it to Donnie.

If Donnie initiated the TT discussion, how would Noah Wiley just happen to have a book on him (right at that moment) that's not only about that very subject, but also written by the "crazy old loony lady that lives up the road"?

After seeing the obit and remembering this (if I'm correct), I definitely think they're alluding to mind control/MKULTRA.
