The year was 1999. Talk of the Y2K crisis was driving technological discussion throughout the United States, and fears that computers would suddenly stop working when clocks hit midnight of the year 2000 stoked fears of the technology we had all come to rely on so heavily. As companies began to consider what they needed to do to ensure continuity into the new millennium, a less abstract threat began to spread itself across the early Internet. It’s name was “Melissa”.
Materials released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in response to a Freedom of Information Act request reveal a level of maturity in its investigation that they don’t consistently demonstrate in investigations of other crimes of similar nature. They also contain some entertaining stories provided by individuals who were investigated in pursuit of this worm, as well as the humanity—not always apparent in other contexts—of the FBI’s investigation.
On an FD-71 form, the FBI’s standard complaint form, dated March 29, 1999 at 6:00 p.m., the FBI described a telephone call from a man (identity withheld) with concerns that his AOL account had been hacked. One of the darkest moments in Atlanta’s history, the 1996 Summer Olympics bombing, grew darker still when the FBI and major media wrongly fingered heroic security guard Richard Jewell as the bomber. A Nov. 12 panel discussion at the Atlanta History Center about “The Suspect,” a new book telling Jewell’s story, was a historic moment in itself, gathering significant figures from the case onstage and in the audience.
Drawing a crowd of hundreds, the event was partly a preemptive strike on how Atlanta may be portrayed in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming movie about Jewell, partly a lecture on history and Jewell’s life, and partly an emotional reflection on an investigation gone astray while the real bomber escaped to continue his crimes. Jewell died at age 44 in 2007.

Two Florida Police Agencies Caught on Video Entering Homes without warrant
One cop was wearing a ski mask when he slapped the phone out of the hands of a man recording.
Twice in one week, videos surfaced showing South Florida cops from two different agencies entering homes without search warrants or owner consent in search of suspects who did not live in the homes.
The first video shows a group of Broward County sheriff's deputies entering the home of Johnny Emmanuel while he was at work in search of his 25-year-old son who does not live at the home.
Emmanuel said he received a text message from his home security system on August 19 showing deputies entering his home from a side door that nobody ever uses.
Emmanuel's son is accused of assaulting a cop which is the excuse they will likely use to explain their disregard for the Constitution, as if that makes any difference.
Had it not been for his security video system, Emmanuel would have never known they had entered his home because they never bothered contacting him, much less served him a warrant.
According to the Miami New Times, which obtained the video:
Emmanuel says the cops left no note they'd been there, let alone copies of a search warrant. He says nobody called him to say cops had been there either. If it weren't for the security system, he says, he never would've known BSO deputies had entered his home and snooped around.
"I have two young children," he says. "Thank God they weren't home — they'd be traumatized for life. Someone could have been shot."
As it turns out, video and documents obtained by New Times show BSO had obtained what's known as a capias warrant to look for Emmanuel's 25-year-old son, Eric Reese, who at the time was wanted on charges of aggravated assault on an officer and fleeing arrest. But Reese did not live at Emmanuel's home. And, more important, a capias warrant — essentially an arrest warrant — in most cases does not allow officers to enter a home without the resident's consent. Officers typically need to have "reasonable suspicion" a suspect is inside a residence before they can bust in legally. Emmanuel doesn't believe the cops did.
BSO spokespeople did not immediately respond to a message from New Times yesterday. (After this story was published, the department said that its spokespeople were not in-office Monday in order to observe Veterans Day.) But Emmanuel says he's freaked out — even if the cops had a reasonable right to break into his house (which he doesn't believe they did), he's floored no one ever informed him they'd entered his house.
The second video was posted to Facebook Thursday showing an Opa-Locka police officer wearing a ski mask entering a man's home with his gun pointed. The man recording tells the cop he is not welcome in the home. The cop responds by slapping the phone out of his hands.
According to the Miami Herald:
Cellphone video footage of an Opa-locka police officer inside an apartment during the search for a suspected gunman has landed the cop in potential hot water and caused the police chief to make an unusual announcement.
In a rare press release, Opa-locka Police Chief James Dobson released the address of the Facebook link to the video and said the incident is being investigated internally by his department.
Dobson said the officer, who hasn’t been named, was searching last week for a man with a handgun who was suspected of “threatening” and demanding money from people in an apartment complex at 13875 NW 22nd Ave. Someone had called Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers and given a description of the suspect, Dobson said.
“The Opa-locka police department can not comment on the exact facts of an active investigation, but it takes any and all allegations of misconduct very seriously,” Dobson said. “Any allegation of police misconduct will be investigated immediately.”

A new FBI study examining “lone offender terrorism” found common traits that could help identify future attackers.
Of the 52 examined cases between 1972 and 2015, 83% were carried out by people who had previously exhibited hostility or aggression, according to the 81-page report. In all of the cases, people around the attackers expressed concern over their behavior.
In 96% of the cases, the offender produced a video, blog or letter that was intended to be viewed by others.
“Absent this report and others like it, someone could see something and they’re solely relying on their gut feeling or spider sense to say, ‘That doesn’t look right,’ or ‘That’s concerning,’” Special Agent John Wyman, chief of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU)’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Center, which conducted the research, said. “I think by putting this information out there, it helps people get over that barrier. It gives you something to fall back on to validate whatever your gut feeling was.”

In April 2015, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) stunned the criminal justice community by acknowledging that in the two-decade period before 2000, nearly every examiner in the FBI’s microscopic hair comparison unit gave flawed testimony in criminal cases.

Microscopic hair comparison analysis, or hair microscopy as it is commonly called, became a major source of controversy following a trio of DNA exonerations in Washington DC from 2009-2012. All three defendants were convicted based on FBI hair microscopy evidence that DNA testing later proved wrong. It turned out that hair microscopy, a so-called forensic science the FBI had used in approximately 21,000 cases, is not really science at all.
In cases involving hair microscopy, hair evidence recovered from a crime scene is examined through a microscope. If the hair in evidence shares enough similar characteristics with a known hair sample (i.e. hair from the suspect or defendant), the hairs are deemed a “match.”

An investigation by The Washington Post and 60 Minutes has cast doubt on at least 250 criminal cases in which the defendant was convicted based on FBI bullet-lead test evidence. Since the early 1960s, the FBI has used a technique called comparative bullet-lead analysis on an estimated 2,500 cases, many of which were homicide cases prosecuted at state and local levels. Comparative bullet-lead analysis, based on the assumption that all bullets in one batch will be chemically similar, examines the chemical compositions of bullets to determine if crime-scene bullets match bullets in a suspect’s possession. FBI labs have since concluded that all bullets in a single batch are not always chemically matched “because subtle chemical changes occurred throughout the manufacturing process.”

The United States played a key role in the military coup in Bolivia, and in a direct way that has scarcely been acknowledged in accounts of the events that forced the country’s elected president, Evo Morales, to resign on November 10.
Just prior to Morales’ resignation, the commander of Bolivia’s armed forces Williams Kaliman “suggested” that the president step down. A day earlier, sectors of the country’s police force had rebelled.
Though Kaliman appears to have feigned loyalty to Morales over the years, his true colors showed as soon as the moment of opportunity arrived. He was not only an actor in the coup, he had his own history in Washington, where he had briefly served as the military attaché of Bolivia’s embassy in the US capital.
Kaliman sat at the top of a military and police command structure that has been substantially cultivated by the US through WHINSEC, the military training school in Fort Benning, Georgia known in the past as the School of the Americas. Kaliman himself attended a course called “Comando y Estado Mayor” at the SOA in 2003.
At least six of the key coup plotters are alumni of the infamous School of the Americas, while Kaliman and another figure served in the past as Bolivia’s military and police attachés in Washington.
Within the Bolivian police, top commanders who helped launch the coup have passed through the APALA police exchange program. Working out of Washington DC, APALA functions to build relations between U.S. authorities and police officials from Latin American states. Despite its influence, or perhaps because of it, the program maintains little public presence. Its staff was impossible for this researcher to reach by phone.
It is common for governments to assign a small number of individuals to work at their country’s embassies abroad as military or police attachés. The late Philip Agee, a one-time CIA case officer who became the agency’s first whistleblower, explained in his 1975 tell-all book how US intelligence traditionally relied on the recruitment of foreign military and police officers, including embassy attachés, as critical assets in regime change and counter-insurgency operations.
As I found from the more than 11,000 FOIA documents I obtained while writing my book on the paramilitary campaign waged in the lead up to the February 2004 ouster of Haiti’s elected government and the post-coup repression, U.S. officials worked for years to ingratiate themselves and establish connections with Haitian police, army, and ex-army officials. These connections as well as the recruitment and information gathering efforts eventually paid off.

President Donald Trump delayed on Thursday evening the release of thousands of pages of classified documents related to the John F. Kennedy assassination, bowing to pressure from the CIA, FBI and other federal agencies still seeking to keep some final secrets about the nearly 54-year-old investigation.
The president allowed the immediate release of 2,800 records by the National Archives, following a last-minute scramble to meet a 25-year legal deadline. Following lobbying by national security officials, the remaining documents will be reviewed during a 180-day period. In a memo released by the White House, Trump said: "I am ordering today that the veil finally be lifted. At the same time, executive departments and agencies have proposed to me that certain information should continue to be redacted because of national security, law enforcement, and foreign affairs concerns. Don't Mess With Roy Cohn
Roy Cohn was once the most feared lawyer in New York City. A ruthless master of dirty tricks, he smeared the reputations of his political enemies, helped send the Rosenbergs to the electric chair, and had more than one Mafia don on speed dial. But his most enduring legacy is Donald Trump, whom he took under his wing in the 1970s. In Ken Auletta's 1978 Esquire profile, we meet the man who tutored the president in the dark arts of gossip, power, and politics.
For twenty years, Roy exchanged Christmas gifts with FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Bernard Baruch testified as a character witness at his first trial. Gossip columnists Walter Winchell and Leonard Lyons, who did not speak to each other, showered Roy with praise, as did George Sokolsky.
Former special agents who once served their country in the fight against mobsters, terrorists and fraudsters often have second careers in the security or investigation departments of big companies and law firms.
However, jumping into the private sector is not without its pitfalls for one-time G-men. As much as they are prized assets by corporate America for their training, experience and contacts, the good reputation of these former agents also can be cynically exploited by employers with sharp practices or shady reputations as a cover to deflect any suspicion into wrongdoing.
For example, Assistant Director Louis Nichols -- J. Edgar's No. 2 man -- left the FBI in 1957, and took a plum job making $100,000 a year at Schenley Industries which mob lackey Roy Cohn allegedly secured for him, and Louis Rosensteil, the company's president, was suspected of ties to Genovese mobsters Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. And former special agent H. Paul Rico left the Boston field office in 1975 to become security head at World Jai Alai, and then was indicted for his alleged role in a 1981 murder as a tool of Winter Hill boss Whitey Bulger although Rico died in 2004 before the charge against him was resolved.
Indeed, in May 1962 while staying at the Volney Hotel in New York City, Meyer Lansky was recorded on a wire describing how the G-men could be co-opted in the private sector as "racketeers" and the "new mafia":
They're nothing but racketeers, every one of them. After five years they get out, get on a big corporation's payroll. Now what happens, you and I . . . let's say I work for IBM. You came. They say [redacted] is doing the same business. He has no FBI guys working for him. Pop, they chop his legs off. They find him with a sweetheart, they find him with this, they find him with that. This thing's gonna get an investigation. It's a new mafia.
The potential pitfalls for former agents joining the civilian life came to the forefront recently for U.S. Congressman Michael Grimm, a Republican from Staten Island, NY, who spent a decade as a special agent with the FBI until leaving the agency in 2006. Grimm then opened a restaurant on the Upper East Side called Healthalicious with partner Bennett Orfaly, and federal prosecutors now allege that Orfaly has personal ties to reputed Gambino capo Anthony "Fat Tony" Morelli who "is serving a 20-year prison sentence for racketeering and extortion in an elaborate tax fraud" as reported by Alison Leigh Cowan for The New York Times:
"Mr. Orfaly maintains constant contact" with Mr. Morelli in prison, [Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony] Capozzolo told the court, noting that Mr. Orfaly "has visited him and engaged in telephone conversations."
One unidentified source claims that Morelli is "like an uncle" to Orfaly as reported by Mitchel Maddux and Dan Mangan for the New York Post.
Orfaly is not accused of any wrongdoing, and Grimm previously sold his interest in the restaurant and insists he was unware of Orfaly's supposed ties to Morelli. In the absense of any evidence to the contrary, Grimm should be entitled to the benefit of the doubt on his claims of ignornance. In any event, many citizens probably are not thrilled with the idea that a special agent who worked undercover assignments targeting the mob after leaving the FBI became involved with a business partner who allegedly has a personal relationship with a reputed mobster. It's just not the prettiest picture.
Another former agent got employment at a law firm which subsequently was indicted. Steve Bursey spent 27 years at the FBI, and among his assignments was serving as the contact agent for undercover agent Joe Pistone who infiltrated the Bonanno crime family as Donnie Brasco. Immediately following his FBI retirement in 1997 Bursey joined the class action law firm Milberg Weiss to head its investigations department. In 2006 the law firm was indicted by federal prosecutors for an alleged decades-long scheme in which serial plaintiffs were illegally paid kickbacks out of the attorneys' fees for filing their shareholder lawsuits. Several heavy-weight partners were convicted for their roles and sent to prison, and the firm itself -- now known simply as Milberg LLP -- settled the criminal case by paying a $75 million fine and hiring a compliance monitor for two years according to a Department of Justice press release: "the settlement with Milberg reflects the seriousness of what was probably the longest-running scheme ever conducted by a law firm," said United States Attorney Thomas P. O’Brien, and "the monetary payment will punish the firm for allowing this conduct to occur."
Among those convicted for their roles in the scheme was the firm's founding partner Mel Weiss, and Bursey wrote a May 1, 2008 letter to the sentencing judge pleading for leniency on behalf of the crooked lawyer which provides the following:

President Donald Trump delayed on Thursday evening the release of thousands of pages of classified documents related to the John F. Kennedy assassination, bowing to pressure from the CIA, FBI and other federal agencies still seeking to keep some final secrets about the nearly 54-year-old investigation.
The president allowed the immediate release of 2,800 records by the National Archives, following a last-minute scramble to meet a 25-year legal deadline. Following lobbying by national security officials, the remaining documents will be reviewed during a 180-day period. In a memo released by the White House, Trump said: "I am ordering today that the veil finally be lifted. At the same time, executive departments and agencies have proposed to me that certain information should continue to be redacted because of national security, law enforcement, and foreign affairs concerns. I have no choice — today — but to accept those redactions rather than allow potentially irreversible harm to our nation‘s security."

Don't Mess With Roy Cohn
Roy Cohn was once the most feared lawyer in New York City. A ruthless master of dirty tricks, he smeared the reputations of his political enemies, helped send the Rosenbergs to the electric chair, and had more than one Mafia don on speed dial. But his most enduring legacy is Donald Trump, whom he took under his wing in the 1970s. In Ken Auletta's 1978 Esquire profile, we meet the man who tutored the president in the dark arts of gossip, power, and politics.
For twenty years, Roy exchanged Christmas gifts with FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Bernard Baruch testified as a character witness at his first trial. Gossip columnists Walter Winchell and Leonard Lyons, who did not speak to each other, showered Roy with praise, as did George Sokolsky.
Former special agents who once served their country in the fight against mobsters, terrorists and fraudsters often have second careers in the security or investigation departments of big companies and law firms.
However, jumping into the private sector is not without its pitfalls for one-time G-men. As much as they are prized assets by corporate America for their training, experience and contacts, the good reputation of these former agents also can be cynically exploited by employers with sharp practices or shady reputations as a cover to deflect any suspicion into wrongdoing.
For example, Assistant Director Louis Nichols -- J. Edgar's No. 2 man -- left the FBI in 1957, and took a plum job making $100,000 a year at Schenley Industries which mob lackey Roy Cohn allegedly secured for him, and Louis Rosensteil, the company's president, was suspected of ties to Genovese mobsters Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. And former special agent H. Paul Rico left the Boston field office in 1975 to become security head at World Jai Alai, and then was indicted for his alleged role in a 1981 murder as a tool of Winter Hill boss Whitey Bulger although Rico died in 2004 before the charge against him was resolved.
Indeed, in May 1962 while staying at the Volney Hotel in New York City, Meyer Lansky was recorded on a wire describing how the G-men could be co-opted in the private sector as "racketeers" and the "new mafia":
They're nothing but racketeers, every one of them. After five years they get out, get on a big corporation's payroll. Now what happens, you and I . . . let's say I work for IBM. You came. They say [redacted] is doing the same business. He has no FBI guys working for him. Pop, they chop his legs off. They find him with a sweetheart, they find him with this, they find him with that. This thing's gonna get an investigation. It's a new mafia.
The potential pitfalls for former agents joining the civilian life came to the forefront recently for U.S. Congressman Michael Grimm, a Republican from Staten Island, NY, who spent a decade as a special agent with the FBI until leaving the agency in 2006. Grimm then opened a restaurant on the Upper East Side called Healthalicious with partner Bennett Orfaly, and federal prosecutors now allege that Orfaly has personal ties to reputed Gambino capo Anthony "Fat Tony" Morelli who "is serving a 20-year prison sentence for racketeering and extortion in an elaborate tax fraud" as reported by Alison Leigh Cowan for The New York Times:
"Mr. Orfaly maintains constant contact" with Mr. Morelli in prison, [Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony] Capozzolo told the court, noting that Mr. Orfaly "has visited him and engaged in telephone conversations."
One unidentified source claims that Morelli is "like an uncle" to Orfaly as reported by Mitchel Maddux and Dan Mangan for the New York Post.
Orfaly is not accused of any wrongdoing, and Grimm previously sold his interest in the restaurant and insists he was unware of Orfaly's supposed ties to Morelli. In the absense of any evidence to the contrary, Grimm should be entitled to the benefit of the doubt on his claims of ignornance. In any event, many citizens probably are not thrilled with the idea that a special agent who worked undercover assignments targeting the mob after leaving the FBI became involved with a business partner who allegedly has a personal relationship with a reputed mobster. It's just not the prettiest picture.

Ted holds a master of public policy degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to his current role with AE911Truth, he was director of NYC CAN’s 2014 High-Rise Safety Initiative, a volunteer campaign manager for AE911Truth’s ReThink911 campaign in 2013, and director of NYC CAN’s 2009 ballot initiative.
Our second speaker is Jack Rasmus, who will discuss with us to discuss the economic significance of the Covid-19 virus. His new book is The Scourge of Neoliberalism: US Economic Policy From Reagan to Trump. Rasmus teaches economics at St. Mary’s College in California and has written a number of books, including Alexander Hamilton & The Origins of the Fed, and Central Bankers at the End of Their Ropes: Monetary Policy and the Coming Depression. As a result of our audit work to date and as described below, we do not have confidence that the FBI has executed its Woods Procedures in compliance with FBI policy. Specifically, the Woods Procedures mandate compiling supporting documentation for each fact in the FISA application. Adherence to the Woods Procedures should result in such documentation as a means toward achievement of the FBI’s policy that FISA applications be “scrupulously accurate.” Our lack of confidence that the Woods Procedures are working as intended stems primarily from the fact that: (1) we could not review original Woods Files for 4 of the 29 selected FISA applications because the FBI has not

been able to locate them and, in 3 of these instances, did not know if they ever existed; (2) our testing of FISA applications to the associated Woods Files identified apparent errors or inadequately supported facts in all of the

Gilead's COVID-19 hopeful remdesivir may get swift Japanese approval

"Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to grant Gilead Sciences' experimental COVID-19 drug remdesivir a special, speedy approval, despite it failing to show any definitive clinical signs that it works.
The report, from Japanese news site Kyodo, could make Japan the first country in the world to approve the med, which was once being tested for Ebola. A green light for the med could come as early as May, Kyodo reports.
“The pharmaceutical approval (of remdesivir) will be possible shortly,” Abe told a parliamentary session, as quoted by the news agency. Gilead will have to make an application for an approval, at which time the Japanese government is set to fast-track its way to market..."
Approved for human use before applying for a license? Wonder how much that cost. Once the first domino is down, approval in other countries gets a lot easier.

As a result of our audit work to date and as described below, we do not have confidence that the FBI has executed its Woods Procedures in compliance with FBI policy. Specifically, the Woods Procedures mandate compiling supporting documentation for each fact in the FISA application. Adherence to the Woods Procedures should result in such documentation as a means toward achievement of the FBI’s policy that FISA applications be “scrupulously accurate.” Our lack of confidence that the Woods Procedures are working as intended stems primarily from the fact that: (1) we could not review original Woods Files for 4 of the 29 selected FISA applications because the FBI has not

been able to locate them and, in 3 of these instances, did not know if they ever existed; (2) our testing of FISA applications to the associated Woods Files identified apparent errors or inadequately supported facts in all of the

Gilead's COVID-19 hopeful remdesivir may get swift Japanese approval

"Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to grant Gilead Sciences' experimental COVID-19 drug remdesivir a special, speedy approval, despite it failing to show any definitive clinical signs that it works.
The report, from Japanese news site Kyodo, could make Japan the first country in the world to approve the med, which was once being tested for Ebola. A green light for the med could come as early as May, Kyodo reports.
“The pharmaceutical approval (of remdesivir) will be possible shortly,” Abe told a parliamentary session, as quoted by the news agency. Gilead will have to make an application for an approval, at which time the Japanese government is set to fast-track its way to market..."
Approved for human use before applying for a license? Wonder how much that cost. Once the first domino is down, approval in other countries gets a lot easier.

I have opined that FBI Director Chris Wray needs to shut the fuck up about encryption. Wray has presented a completely skewed perspective on the issue, following in the footsteps of Jim Comey. Wray claims encryption is leading to a criminal apocalypse, even as crime rates remain at historic lows. He also claims encryption is making it impossible to follow through with investigations, but has presented no evidence to back this claim.

It is medically illogical to wait until someone is very sick before treating them
Here's the thing. For the first week of clinical illness, disease is primarily in the respiratory tract, and viral titers are rising. After a week, you start making detectable antibodies, and usually viral titers decline. But other processes are at work making you sick, especially an inappropriate immune response. And you are still dealing with damage that was caused by the virus.
While many things can go very wrong after that first week (heart failure, kidney failure, blood clots neurologic damage, etc.) the main killer is ARDS and inappropriate immune-mediated damage.
ARDS has a mortality rate of about 40%, and nothing tried over decades has made much impact on that. Likewise, there are no great treatments for kidney and heart failure, nor for most neurologic illness.
It should be obvious that with a disease whose course evolves over time in the manner of COVID-19, you have to attack the virus hard and fast, rather than the mess it leaves in its wake. That can only be done in the early stage. Treatment trials need to enroll patients when they first become ill, rather than holding off.
If there is a shortage of hydroxychloroquine, for example, and that is the reason for waiting to treat, then the public needs to be told, and to be told what the plan is to ameliorate the shortage, if it turns out to be effective.
We won't be able to identify a really good COVID drug unless we start using it early. Why are our federal health agencies doing everything wrong?

Findings of Misconduct by a then Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for Failure to File Federal or State Income Tax Returns for Three Consecutive Years
The Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) initiated this investigation upon the receipt of information from the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA) alleging that a then AUSA failed to file federal or state individual income tax returns for three consecutive years and owed approximately $18,000 in back taxes.
The OIG investigation substantiated the allegation that the AUSA willfully failed to file federal individual income tax returns for three consecutive years in violation of federal law and federal ethics regulations, and owed more than $31,000 in federal taxes for that taxable period. The OIG also substantiated that the AUSA willfully failed to file state individual income tax returns, in violation of state law, and owed more than $600 in state taxes for that same taxable period.
The Department removed the AUSA from federal service while the OIG investigation was ongoing.

Trump’s Advisers Have a Brazen Plot to Gut Social Security

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the policy Donald Trump is fixated on has nothing to do with ramping up testing, getting protective equipment to workers, or sending resources to nursing homes where tens of thousands of seniors are dying of COVID-19. Instead, he’s obsessed with cutting payroll taxes, Social Security’s dedicated revenue.
Now, Trump’s economic advisers and his unqualified son-in-law Jared Kushner have another way to undermine Social Security: The so-called “Eagle Plan,” which would be more aptly named the Work ’Til You Die Plan. WHEN THE Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced last week that it would be probing the Glynn County Police Department’s dismissal of the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, some people breathed a sigh of relief. It was a welcome development after the lynching of a 25-year-old black man, whose white killers had been walking free for 74 days — even though the entire incident was caught on tape.
But those familiar with the GBI responded with warranted skepticism. Sure, it was a step in the right direction. But at that point, almost anything would have been. Local police and elected officials for over two months had found reasons not to arrest either of the men — Gregory and Travis McMichael — who chased and killed Arbery while he was jogging. After all, one was their former colleague. The other, his son.

INVESTIGATIVE SUMMARY
Findings of Misconduct by a then Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for Failure to File Federal or State Income Tax Returns for Three Consecutive Years
The Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) initiated this investigation upon the receipt of information from the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA) alleging that a then AUSA failed to file federal or state individual income tax returns for three consecutive years and owed approximately $18,000 in back taxes.
The OIG investigation substantiated the allegation that the AUSA willfully failed to file federal individual income tax returns for three consecutive years in violation of federal law and federal ethics regulations, and owed more than $31,000 in federal taxes for that taxable period. The OIG also substantiated that the AUSA willfully failed to file state individual income tax returns, in violation of state law, and owed more than $600 in state taxes for that same taxable period.
The Department removed the AUSA from federal service while the OIG investigation was ongoing.

The Mind-blowing History at Fort Detrick
Since the Trump administration declared national emergency in mid-march over the rapid spread of COVID-19, the task of developing a vaccine has fallen on the U.S. Army’s top virus research lab in Fort Detrick, located in suburban Maryland some 50 miles outside of Washington, D.C..
Over the past decades, leading researches on a wide range of viruses and bacteria were conducted inside the sprawling complex. Its state-of-the-art facilities also store some of the most dangerous toxins known to mankind, including Ebola, anthrax and the SARS coronavirus.
The obscure army base came under the spotlight in 2008 after one of its scientists was suspected to have perpetrated the 2001 anthrax attack, where several letters containing the deadly germ was mailed to American media and government offices.
Last year, one of the most prominent high-security labs inside the campus was shut down by health authorities due to safety violations. Besides a few incidents here and there, Fort Detrick seems like an ordinary place for modern medical science. Dialing back to history a little further, however, a period of purely freakish history begins to emerge.
After World War II, Fort Detrick became a site of horrifying scientific experiments conducted under a top-secret CIA quest to control the human mind, known as Project MK Ultra. After more than 20 years, the project ended in abysmal failure and led to an unknown number of deaths, including a scientist who participated in the project, and at least hundreds of American and Canadian victims subjected to mental and physical torture. The experiments not only violated international law, but also the agency’s own charter which forbids domestic activity.
Project MK Ultra was brought to life by the godfather of America’s intelligence empire – CIA Director Allen Dulles, whose ever-fiery rhetoric about Soviet threat helped him prop up an omnipotent national security apparatus that would come to define American politics. In 1953, after capturing American pilots who admitted to deploying anthrax during the Korean War, Dulles began touting theories that they had been brainwashed by then communists of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. To ensure national security, he argued, the U.S. must devise its own brainwashing program.
Dulles’ claim turned out to be based on nothing more than pure Cold War fantasy as a report he later commissioned rejected the communist brainwashing claims. Yet, the cunning spymaster Dulles who was known to have actively rescued several top Nazi officials against the will of his own government, continued the program for a far more nefarious reason.
As explained by David Talbot in his book The Devil’s Chessboard, many spies recruited in the early days of the Cold War were sketchy, undependable characters motivated by inner vulnerabilities such as greed, lust or revenge. Meanwhile, the agency was looking for ways to rule
