Re: Jumping the Rubicon
I thought Rubicon was pretty awful--it didn't pass my 10 minute test. I switched off until Mad Men came on immediately after.
And what's up with the opening credits of Mad Men? That guy in the suit falling through space from the New York tower--

Pretty 9/11-ish, I'd say.

Re: Jumping the Rubicon
caesar is given too much credit there,
Sulla was the first Roman general to march on Rome
No general before him had ever crossed the city limits, the pomoerium, with his army.
Most of his commanders (with the exception of his kinsman through marriage Lucullus) refused to accompany him.
no-one talks of crossing the pomoerium interestingly

the question is why, who, why, what, why, when, why and why again?

Good show, but I don't think it will make it to a second season. While very good, it is just too intricate and depressing for a mass audience.
Great scene the other night as the death to terrorists (and innocent children) report was being handed in. The team member notices a coffee stain on his shirt and unsuccessfully attempts to clean it ("out out, damned spot!") away.

Speaking of underappreciated parapolitical films such as The Parallax View, don't forget The Domino Principle and The Conversation, both with Gene Hackman.

Re: Jumping the Rubicon
The best thing about The Parallax View is that it posits a very strong form of deep politics, a far-ranging assassination conspiracy. (The name "Parallax" reminds me of "Permindex.") But except for the great photography (Gordon Willis) it wasn't much of a movie.
Blow Out was much better, though it posits a very weak form of deep politics (a single rogue agent, almost a lone nut.) (Someone was just comparing the two, here or somewhere else.) But both deserve a lot of credit for their descent into intense paranoia and their uncompromising bleakness.
I was very disappointed with the first episode of Rubicon, but I'm beginning to like it. It helped a lot when I realized that it's not a conspiracy thriller, it's a spy thriller, and adjusted my expectations accordingly. Also, I like the cast.
Maybe it'll offer an interesting vision of the world later, but it isn't doing that now.

I thought the opening credits of Mad Men were a rip of Casino's.

Show is still slow as hell. I put it on when I'm coding because it's minimally distracting.

Agreed, wombat. It's so glacial that my desk gets straightened, the dog gets brushed, I call my mom...
and I don't feel that I've really missed anything. I used to watch Twin Peaks like a neurotic hawk, looking for motifs and clues, but Rubicon just isn't all that compelling.

The real issue is that there is extremely low likelihood that the speculations of the untrained, on a topic almost pathologically riddled by dynamic considerations and feedback effects, will offer anything new.

I'm loving it. It is a little slow & moody, but that's its charm. I don't imagine it will take off, though. Not enough car chases....

I'm quite enjoying it. Can't think of any other TV show like it.
Not for the ADD crowd, though - that's for sure!

Re: Jumping the Rubicon
Just watched the 3rd one and I'm hooked too. Nice to have a new really interesting show to TiVo. And even nicer to see my husband The Skeptic actually watching it with me--his severe allergy to anything with the faintest tinge of dreaded/yucky conspiracy-ness hasn't kicked in yet...have I crossed over into some parallel universe without noticing?
If so, I think I'll stay
