An observation on Drew Barrymore -- rabbit hole ahead!

Jesus, I can't believe that guy stills works in Hollywood. He's not exactly Tom Cruise, the last thing I saw him in was Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

I think of Spielberg like Stephen King myself. Too much of a success commercially to be revered as an unparalled artiste. A lot of his stuff is milquetoast too IMO, though he has dealt with serious subjects at times as well.

I never thought of tats as being anything but cool- certainly the result of hanging around bikers and musicians in my teens.

I got my first at the illegal age of seventeen(1981) and hid it from my parents for two years. The ones that followed (all three of them) are esoteric and of personal meaning to me. As I age, I have found that I do not enjoy displaying them in public much, partly because of their personal meaning, partly because their subject matter could lead to difficulties with people who misunderstand the symbolism. I don't think of them as a 'fashion statement', I identify far more with the stone-age shamans who have been found in alp mountain ice than I do with Drew Barrymore, Dennis Rodman or any other celebrity.

IIRC, the Glover article is in Apocalypse Culture II by Adam Parfrey

as for the modern tattoo resurgence, it was going strong by 92 amongst college kids and locals at one large eastern state university town. It might have something to do with the post gulf-war era. That RE:search book (shown above) from '89 was everywhere.

since we've got another douglas coupland thread going... I'd think tattoos are a form of... anti-victim device (ADV) - a small fashion accessory worn on an otherwise conservative outfit which announces to the world that one still has a spark of individuality burning inside: 1940s retro ties and earrings (on men), feminist buttons, noserings (on women), and the now almost completely extinct teeny weeny "rattail" haircut (both sexes). (page 114)

Almost TWENTY years later and it's the same shit still today, meanwhile, we continued to be svengali-ed with this talk about the "rapid pace of change". Bullshit, the whole point and secret of modern America is that NOTHING CHANGES, we've been on the same merry-go-round for 50 years.

Looks like Speilberg really pissed Glover off royally:

Glover and the producers did not come to a financial agreement for him to reprise the role of George McFly in Back to the Future Part II (1989). The producers brought the character back to life by splicing together archived footage and new scenes (using an actor in prosthetic makeup). Glover, who hadn't given permission for his likeness to be used, sued the film's producer, Steven Spielberg, and won. The case prompted the Screen Actors Guild to devise new regulations about the use of actors' images.

I then wind up watching a much more recent clip of an appearance of Barrymore on Letterman and it has to do with Letterman's dog being "from hell".



Barrymore now is "grown up" and is treated as such. She has no need to prance across Dave's desk. However the topics of "hell", "sinfulness" is the same. Hugh, don't you call this "priming" or something?...
