Re: Laurel Canyon
Doubtless the FBI and perhaps other intelligence forces penetrated Laurel Canyon scene. That doesn't make FZ their patsy. If the feds could have paid informants hanging out in Amsterdam to get high with American "hippies" (most of whom were from upper middle class or upper class families) the expense of developing a snitch culture in the music business was not only possible, but likely, becaue, besides a dozen or so college campuses, it was the breeding ground for a culture of dissent. Intersting facts are brought out, then forced connections made to support the theory. If they infiltrated and manipulated to the same extent as the Panthers then focus on that rather than selectively concentrated on individuals who's fathers were connected to the military industrial complex (all who were from the highest mobilized generation in US history to fight in the war effort against the axis powers). Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia were both former soliders who avoided direct criticism of the military. They were not stooges any more than LC crowd. FZ was a lot of things, some brilliant an mind boggling, others self obsessed and tragic....but he was no war monger. He didn't like getting high. He detested any kind of conformity, including non-conformist conformity.
But there definitely were stooges from that era....for sure

Not sure about this part though:

I'll tell you where the four winds dwell
In Franklin's tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you lose your way.
In Franklin's tower the four winds sleep
Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep
Wildflower seed on the sand and wind
May the four winds blow you home again.

And through here is the bomb shelter… Former top-secret Hollywood military base for sale as home at $6.3m
By John Stevens
Last updated at 7:44 PM on 13th June 2011
With its sprawling grounds, swimming pool and views over the Sunset Strip this ten bedroom mansion looks like a typical Hollywood Hills home.
But deep underneath this 53,000 square foot house is a bomb shelter that gives a clue to its secret past.
The property, which has just been listed for sale at $6.3 million, used to be a top-secret military base and was used as an Air Force film studio and research facility for the atom bomb.
According to Sotheby’s, the Lookout Mountain Air Force Station on Wonderland Avenue, LA, was built in 1941 as the main WW11 air defence and radar communications headquarters on the west coast.
The base, just five minutes drive from the Sunset Strip, was used as an Air Force film studio between 1947 and 1969 and made 20,000 movies - more than the whole of Hollywood.
Films of the nuclear tests at Nevada were processed here under the tightest security controls and high-ranking military officials would come to view the footage.
It was not until the 1990s that the existence of the military base was revealed to the public.
The building was converted to a spacious residential property and is now back on the market.
The home has few traces of its former use, although it still has a two-storey soundstage accessible only through and electric door.
There are also 17 temperature and climate controlled film vaults, which new owners could potentially use as wine cellars.
The home is currently owned by an artist and judge and has ten bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
It also comes with a large free-form pool, four 100 foot long art galleries and a large underground parking garage with room for about 15 cars, as well as a parking lot that holds another 70.
The real estate agents describe many of the rooms as ‘multipurpose’.
At the height of its use by the Air Force, the compound had soundstages, screening rooms and film processing labs just like any other Hollywood film studio.
Over 250 people, including civilians seconded from Warner Brothers, worked as cameramen, producers and directors at the military facility.
Each one cleared to access top secret and restricted data and sworn to secrecy regarding the activities at the studio.
For 22 years the studio produced millions of feet of classified film and thousands of stills for the military.
Beginning with the first nuclear test in 1945, there was a need to capture the testing with still and moving pictures to help enhance the understanding knowledge of the behaviour of nuclear weapons.
Some of the best talent in the film industry were recruited to work at the studio to film the nuclear blasts.
Staff used specially constructed bunkers in the test area to house remotely-controlled cameras, and took to the skies in planes directly behind the bombers.
Only a few dozen of the films made at Lookout Mountain have been declassified.

Re: Laurel Canyon
I don't know that I totally agree with that; I've been following this since the very beginning ( a long time now) waiting for a point to be made, and he has dragged it out to the very bitter end (at least he only has one more installment left) without showing his hand.
However, I'm beginning to think IF his final installment is really the last one it will have to be nuclear for me not to think I've wasted a lot of reading time and some serious inkage, as I've printed off the whole thing. Gah.
I got onto Dave by happening onto 'There's Something about Henry.' Ordered his book on serial killers. Pretty darn good, even if he does fail on this particular series. And he could.

Re: Laurel Canyon
Excellent series. Don't much care if it comes to a climactic ending. Will the information previously imparted be less valuable if it fails to do so?

Nope, his gossip is super-juicy, and not many people seem to know about it.
I think he's already made his point...but...
The Doors were really Charles Manson and the Wrecking Crew!

Re: Laurel Canyon
True. The gossip HAS been delicious. I just figured the point of it would end up being something like he disclosed in 'There's Something about Henry.'
Ever read that? It's something.
Edit: Wait a minute. This is R.I. What am I saying? Of course you've read it.

^^@ Marie-- Of course we've read it!
I LOVE the super juicy gossip in this series. The atmosphere is also rendered well and I've enjoyed it all immensely.
Plus, poor little Goro haunts me.
I never would have known about him if not for Dave.

Anyone who has done any research into the events at 10050 Cielo Drive knows that both the murderers and the victims liked to film home movies.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if at any given moment in the late 60's, their respective spools of super-8 footage were sitting on the same shelf at Lookout Mountain Laboratory, waiting to be developed.

well, the Ventures are clean
here's one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard... W.C. were on some Vee recordings too.
not that I buy that there's anything too spooky about the W.C. folks.
