That for the moment this is an assertion of the present Neo-Red Scare, and not actually demonstrated as an empirical observation.
I shall grant that it is an educated surmisal on your part. I'm sure your answer is true of the "Alt-Right" backers of Trump, but otherwise depends on how you define what consitutes this "base."
I'd like to see a poll that first establishes how many respondents can even name the fucking president of Russia, then determines who views him favorably and if so why, through scientifically valid questions.

If you mean, "why does Trump's base view Putin so favorably?", then the answer is pretty simple: they see Russia as the last white, Christian nation remaining in the world, and a bulwark against Islamofascism and, oddly enough, Jewish Bolshevism.
The contrast with a Kenyan Muslim Marxist is rather clear.
This sounds weirdly similar to the cartoonish reasons why certain people loathe the idea of russia...

Honestly, it is simply the theme I see repeated in comment threads on pro-Trump venues, so, no, not a particularly scientific polling method. However, in conjunction with the number of Trump supporters who question Obama's citizenship and religious beliefs to this day, I think it has merit as a partial answer to slad's question. A more salient question would be, "why does Trump view Putin so favorably?", and I doubt the actual answer is "KILLERY WANTED TO START WW3!!!!!" Rather, almost certainly
kompromat.
Seventy years of relentless propaganda will do that to you. I mean, you know,
it works.

"why does Trump view Putin so favorably?"
Could it possibly be that Trump admires Putin because Putin is making Russia great again?

I find it highly unlikely it was possible for the Russians to hack into anything. It had to have been a mole or spy or something. For instance you cannot hack into my corporate site. I guess you could, but you would have to physically steal my time sensitive SecureID and then guess about four other passwords and different usernames. You only get a minute per time sensitive numerical password then it randomly changes again and again and again. Once you think you have it in right but didn't, poof, time to try again. Maybe election shit is less secure -- I have no idea. But I think it is again, unlikely. Had to have been a mole.

Justin Raimondo has been halfway between orgasm and embolism on twitter the last few hours, over Trumps pinned Putin tweet and other people's response to it.
Forget the new cold war, guys: we're going to have peace. Thank you President Trump.
After *decades* of perpetual war and endless bogeymen to scare the children with, we're going to have peace
I was right about Trump after all. He *is* a man of peace
Peace is breaking out all over - and that sound you hear is neocon heads exploding. It's glorious!
My faith in Trump is being confirmed. This is a great moment. The century of war is over. Let peace reign - Peace through Trump!
See? They *hate* the idea of peace with Russia. They mock peace, the way vultures' cries mock corpse-littered battlefields. For shame.
Ukrainian war-bot doesn't get that the "victory" is Trump's, not Putin's. And America's: because no one but Kiev wants war with Russia.
Justin Raimondo Retweeted David Frum

I've been thinking, maybe the evidence of hacking was used to cover for the leak. If you want to leak, and you know you're going to leak, everybody is going to know it was a leak unless there is, say, evidence that the system was hacked. So maybe as part of the leak, those who assisted with it made sure there were footprints in the system indicating that it was compromised from outside.
BUT, I've also heard that the NSA or whoever would be able to tell for certain what data was hacked (but would not be able to tell for certain what data was taken by an insider), and you'd think that kind of evidence would have been in the report yesterday, if it existed.

Creator of NSA’s Global Surveillance System Calls B.S. On Russian Hacking Report
Posted on December 30, 2016 by WashingtonsBlog
We’ve previously documented that the hacking evidence against Russia is extremely weak, and the new report on Russian hacking doesn’t say much.
Indeed – if Russia hacked the Democratic party emails (from the DNC and top Clinton aide John Podesta) – the NSA would have all of the records showing exactly who did it.
We asked Bill Binney what he thought of the new report.
Binney is the NSA executive who created the agency’s mass surveillance program for digital information, who served as the senior technical director within the agency, who managed six thousand NSA employees, the 36-year NSA veteran widely regarded as a “legend” within the agency and the NSA’s best-ever analyst and code-breaker, who mapped out the Soviet command-and-control structure before anyone else knew how, and so predicted Soviet invasions before they happened (“in the 1970s, he decrypted the Soviet Union’s command system, which provided the US and its allies with real-time surveillance of all Soviet troop movements and Russian atomic weapons”).
Binney is the real McCoy. As we noted in 2013, Binney has been interviewed by virtually all of the mainstream media, including CBS, ABC, CNN, New York Times, USA Today, Fox News, PBS and many others.
Binney tells Washington’s Blog:
I expected to see the IP’s or other signatures of APT’s 28/29 [the entities which the U.S. claims hacked the Democratic emails] and where they were located and how/when the data got transferred to them from DNC/HRC [i.e. Hillary Rodham Clinton]/etc. They seem to have been following APT 28/29 since at least 2015, so, where are they?
Further, once we see the data being transferred to them, when and how did they transfer that data to Wikileaks? This would be evidence of trying to influence our election by getting the truth of our corrupt system out.
And, as Edward Snowden said, once they have the IP’s and/or other signatures of 28/29 and DNC/HRC/etc., NSA would use Xkeyscore to help trace data passing across the network and show where it went. [Background.]
In addition, since Wikileaks is (and has been) a cast iron target for NSA/GCHQ/etc for a number of years there
should be no excuse for them missing data going to any one associated with Wikileaks.
***
Too many words means they don’t have clear evidence of how the data got to Wikileaks.
Binney designed the NSA’s electronic surveillance system, so he would know.

I have no problem believing that Vladimir Putin tried to influence the American election. He's gangster-spook-scum of the lowest order and capable of anything. And Donald Trump, too, was swine enough during the campaign to publicly hope the Russians would disclose Hillary Clinton's emails. So a lot of this is very believable.
But we've been burned before in stories like this, to disastrous effect. Which makes it surprising we're not trying harder to avoid getting fooled again.
Matt Taibbi
and we were burned by LEDEEN/CHENEY who is best buds with Gen. Flynn so we can be burned either way....so I think we could try someone different this time

Take a look at the actual story, latest version is the one from FBI & DHS at the link above.
The story is not about anything worthy of the name of hacking. They are not claiming actual hacking. They are claiming phishing.
According to the official story, which has been repeated without changes and without additional evidence provided since October, the "CIA" says the responsible parties are two "advanced persistent threats," a.k.a. "APT28" and "APT29," a.k.a. "Cozy Bear" and "Fancy Bear." These are conceived as "groups" that are "reported" to be associated with "Russian intelligence services" (a.k.a. "RIS"). These entities sent phishing e-mails to HUNDREDS of U.S. and non-U.S. companies and institutions. (In the terminology, they "launched an attack.") Among these HUNDREDS of recipients were Podesta and the DNC. Like master chumps, they supposedly provided their own g-mail passwords in response to the phishing. This allowed "exfiltration" of the g-mails, which were later published. (No evidence of direct connection, isn't post hoc good enough for you?!)
That's the fucking story - phishing!!! It doesn't even matter if they prove that much, it's ludicrous. That is what they are attaching terms to like "tradecraft" and "adversary," with claims about how this is typical of "RIS." Phishing! It could only be the most advanced, the most sophisticated, the most RUSSIAN RUSSIANS ever, there is no other possibility.

This is complete lunacy. There is no evidence of a serious hacking attempt. The USG is acting the role of a teen aged drama queen. One that could become seriously detrimental to most of humanity, if things are continually ran without out ANY attempts at 'Statesmenship', diplomacy, or vision. We are methodically causing g a situation for who knows, what political ends. America, especially the 'Democrats', have lost the plot...

I challenge anyone to get into CenturyLink Intranet. Same with any large corporation. It is basically impossible. 428322. 408229. Now find the four passwords needed within one minute before it times out.
In the time it spent to write that it is now 913042. in the time it spent to type those numbers it is now 784227. Now get working on the passwords within one minute!
Oh your static passwords have to be changed weekly.
