It seems to me that we are already pushing other people ahead of us down The Road. As the biosphere shrinks, McCarthy describes the collapse of the protagonist's core beliefs. I sense that this might be happening already: that a hardening of interests, a shutting down of concern, is taking place among the people of the rich world. If this is true, we do not need to wait for the forests to burn or food supplies to shrivel before we decide that civilisation is in trouble.

"It shows the lengths that al Qaeda will go to and the indifference that they have to these pure [sic?] kids."

-- Lt. Col. Benjamin Kam, orthopedic surgeon at a US military hospital in Afghanistan.

Creepy quote from a CBS story on children being used as bombers by al Qaeda and the taliban -
not the story on children being bombed by the CIA and CENTCOM.

There are three rules. Law number one is The Innocent Must Suffer. Law number two is The Guilty Must Be Punished. And the third law is You Must Taste Blood To Be A Man. We’re working now on a fourth law, The Dead Shall Walk; but we’re not sure whether or not it’s universal.

You have a cycle that feeds on itself: the more you hear these extremists expressing their opinions, the more you are going to believe that those extreme beliefs are normal for your community.

And all of this raises the question of how many times Joe Biden can eat his own foot, pass it through his GI track, shit it out, and eat it again, before the tightening knot of his extraordinary feat of Ouroboran malapropism actually cuts him in half and spills his steaming guts all over the dais.
