Hugh's got a point, though he might disagree with me on what the point is.
MI5/6, GCHQ, and the rest of HMs SIS are entirely absent in the narrative we've been getting so far (apart from one brave mention by Tom Watson, so far as I know, and the heavily underplayed Tuleta/Stakeknife revelations). Their absence can't go on forever.
Here's the story, from a certain angle. A foreign-owned media company with many, many shady links and questionable business practices placed spies in the highest levels of the Metropolitan police (Wallis) and at the heart of both major political parties (Coulson next to Cameron, Tom Baldwin next to Miliband) and all these spies reported back to their erstwhile employers about what was going on in their current places of work. This reporting back to NI (and from there to who knows where - Murdoch is certainly close with the CIA, at least, and no doubt Mossad too) was probably their main job all along.
Then the Telegraph (who are known to have run stories straight from the hands of the security services before, without checking or questioning them - and why would they? they're in the same business) targetted the only outspoken member of the only party that no one had bothered to fully infiltrate before (Cable, and the Lib Dems) with a specially concocted embarassment strategy. Which worked.
Highly dubious people were spying on, phone-hacking, computer-hacking (?), physically and electronically surveilling, the entire Royal Family, senior and junior policemen, the Prime Minister himself (Brown) and senior members of his Cabinet, and obtaining the medical records of their children, etc. as well as having access to their travel itineraries and security arrangements. This is just the stuff that's proven so far.
And MI5/Special Branch/GCHQ, etc. who's job it is to notice and prevent such things (they must've noticed) did absolutely fuck all. Except possibly kill Sean Hoare.

^^^ Brilliant post ^^^
I had an intuition that there was just something sort of missing in this whole mess, sort of like a familiar piece of music but something isnt right - then you realise there is no rhythm section. Until reading that, the lack of an intel angle wasnt even on my mental map

The main man, Tom Watson knew of the involvement of the spooks:
[13th July 2011]
1.04pm: Labour's Tom Watson asks if the inquiry will have access to the intelligence services. At the "murkier end", there are allegations about contacts between the intelligence agencies and News International.
Cameron says the judge will be able to take the inquiry wherever the evidence leads.
Tom Watson's great. He's my new Norman Baker, since the old one got broken.
As I see it, and as many others have said here already, the celebrity/crime victim hacking angle is just a fascinating and horrifying blind over the real story. NI has always operated, mostly without it's own knowledge, and certainly without the knowledge of most of it's staff (including most of those involved in this hacking/tracking scandal) as an intelligence operation - an intelligence operation which had the perfect cover, and constitutional protections, of appearing to be a (totally ridiculous) news provider.
Information gained in the course of it's "journalistic investigations" filtered back through Coulson and Brooks and others we probably won't ever hear about to Murdoch, who fed it to his long-term backers in Langley, and, no doubt, Hubei Province (maybe even without Murdoch's knowledge) through Deng. And it would've gone other places too. And no doubt he has his "personal files" like Hoover did, where he can feel all removed and puritanical while closely studying the sexual indiscretions of others.
If Norman Baker was half-right, and the death of David Kelly was only a sanctioned hit, where our own security services allowed a foreign service to assassinate a citizen on our soil, then isn't NI just an example of them allowing foreign intelligence services to gather and utilise information here - a lesser crime?
It's no secret that we allow it anyway. I passed Menwith Hill, home of Echelon, on me way down to York recently, and saw the 200 foot golf balls all in a row. Hell, the last UK Census was conducted by Lockheed Martin!

Wrong. This episode doesn't even come close to the much bigger expose of social control from media>politics coming in the near future.
This episode is being used to put a topic in the public's mind in a much less illusion-shattering form, a classic psyops tactic of counterpropaganda.
Stand by.
Er ok except Murdoch's social control and influence over politics is massive in Australia and the UK, and even in the US where he has effectively used Fox to shield Obama from any potential criticism from the left for being a corporate stooge. Murdoch has more control over the Australian media than the CIA and I imagine he has more control over the UK media too.
Social control via Murdoch run media is why despite the hottest decade in history a huge bunch of Australians think the planet is coolin and making people pay for the mess the make (or the resources the scam) is a communist plot to destroy their freedom.

And yet the NSA routinely conducts warrantless wiretaps, and officialdom never gives a single shit about it.
(Oh, that's right: the NSA is "officialdom." But then, I thought Rupert Murdoch was too…)

Hadn't read ahab's bit at the top of the page..
I see Murdoch as running a kind of open source version of what Hugh reckons the CIA does. Murdoch doesn't = CIA, or Mossad for that matter, but their interests have been closely aligned for a very long time.
Thats why this ain't a diversion. ITs its own thing.

It's definitely not just a diversion, to draw our eyes from something bigger (though bigger things are being sneaked through opportunistically as we watch, as a matter of routine, like the ailing Cameron's whitepaper on introducing "competition" to every part of the public sector).
It looks like it could be a public dismantling of three very large and sucessful semi-independent front companies - The Met, News International, and the British government. It also looks like the hilariously heartless discarding of one very large and sucessful semi-independent news magnate. They're all crashing down just like the Shah, BCCI, Noriega, Nugan Hand, etc. It's like someone or something has withdrawn the protection from them.
Come to think of it, it was Nick Davies!
The Met are looking especially downsized right now. From a monolithic central entity wielding unquestioned power, including that over life and death, and threatening strikes or work-to-rule actions against a cringing government, to a total joke, riddled with high-level resignations and looming prosecutions in the space of a fortnight. The police forces of England and Wales face a 14% reduction in officers over the next four years - which will mean 34,100 more arrogant arseholes standing outside your local Sainsburys telling you that you can't smoke there (or skateboard if you're a younger). They'll be outside and inside your JobCentre too, on minimum wage, not happy to be there and not happy to see you there either.
It's all big, very big.
I've forgot what I'm talking about now.

Sure stuff get sneaked thru, but its important to recognise the difference between opportunism and some vast overiding plan. You can basically plan on distraction, and although Murdoch may be gone, his MO ain't. Look over there, a big distracting thing.
There will always be distractions in the media, cos some stuff gets our attention. Tsunamis, a bomb in a city somewhere. Some dumb cartoon.
You don't need to organise a specific one to get something hidden. there are enough as it is because we have a global media and fucking youtube and lolcats.
Trapdoor was awesome tho.
The age of newspapers is passing, what comes next who knows...
Once upon a time newspaper headlines defined concensus reality but the age of Augmentation is upon us, speaking of which 1 month till Human Revolution comes out. Rupert who?

Did you ever play Invisible War? It wasn't as bad as most folk (including me) said at the time. It's no Deus Ex, though. But nothing is.
Human Revolution sounds pretty great so far. There was a leak (accidental or deliberate? corporate conspiracy?) of the first few levels onto torrent sites a while back. Players of the original Deus Ex from the olden times, who tried it out for size, have told me it lives up to the name it carries. I want to believe.
And Skyrim's coming on 11/11, which makes it the most esoteric and occult game ever.
Looking forward to that one. It's got Draugr in it. Never mind the dragons - DRAUGR!
Just found this vid of a secret conversation between Rupert and James Murdoch, which took place in 2049 (eh?):

Only one news source for this tasty bit of info for some reason - Assange's ex-lawyers phone hacked:
Channel 4 News learns that media lawyer Mark Stephens may have been a target of phone hacking by the News of the World, as police investigate alleged attacks on the voicemails of solicitors.
High-profile media lawyer Mark Stephens has revealed to Channel 4 News that police have confirmed he is among the 4,000 potential News of the World phone-hack victims.
His name appears in Glenn Mulcaire's notebooks, which police are currently trawling. Sixty officers working for Operation Weeting are contacting people whose mobile phone numbers were listed by the private investigator, who served a jail sentence for phone hacking in 2007.
Mr Stephens told Channel 4 News he contacted Scotland Yard to ask if his phone had been targeted. He said: "I asked them if I'd been hacked - they came back to me in 90 mins and said yes.
"It confirmed my worst suspicions, that I was in Mulcaire's notebook.
"There is nothing I can do about it but the important thing is to ascertain which client [was the target] so I can advise them.
"My concern is for them, not myself.
"Until they [police] come and see me - I don't know which client it's in connection with."
Mr Stephens's former clients include James Hewitt, who had an affair with Princess Diana, and most recently the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
...
Perverting the course of justice
The Law Society has expressed serious concerns following the development, pointing out that interfering with the voicemail of a solicitor is potentially a serious offence if it has been done with the intention of undermining court action.
"Hacking into solicitors' phones would be very serious indeed, and we urge the police to carry out a full investigation," said the society's chief executive Des Hudson.
"If hacking was carried out with the intention of undermining court action, it might well constitute an attempt to pervert the course of justice, which is a serious criminal offence.
"In any event, it is a shocking breach of the privacy of both solicitors and their clients."

"Murdoch-detector" browser add-on warns you when you're reading Murdoch-tainted news
Two new browser plugins are here to help you with your Murdoch-detecting needs: Murdoch Block is a Chrome extension that warns you when you're about to visit a news site controlled by the Murdoch empire and gives you the chance to turn away before the phone-hacking, ethics-lacking propaganda meets your eyes; and Murdoch Alert puts a helpful warning bar at the bottom of your browser whenever you land on a Murdoch-controlled news page.
