I was being a bit of a shit stirrer before but I can't help it when I see people react indignantly to the suggestion that obesity is usually caused by over consumption of calories.

This kind of ties in to the hatred of the self help industry that is palpable on this board at times. For some people it seems don't want to accept that the solutions to many of their problem's are in their own hands. From a cause effect point of view obesity is probably the simplest fucking problem you will ever have to solve.

Okay, I'm pro-shit-stirring and pro-bullshit-detecting, but how does this relate to what Oprah and Dr. Phil were telling women who had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism?

Look up my thread on Oprah wherein I detail the advice she and her doctor guest gave about hypothyroidism. These twits advised r & r (presumably not at Oprah's Hawaiian retreat where she went to be "cured" of the disease)for a very real medical condition which requires medication, which she and the doctory scrupulously avoided mentioning. She's also allowed Dr. Phil to berate women who think, based on their symptoms, they may have the disease. "You're not sick, you're fat!" But of course, Oprah herself is really sick.

I guess the point is I'm all for people bringing up legitimate criticisms of Oprah and Dr Phil, but this was not in my opinion a legitimate criticism.

I couldn't care less for Oprah or Dr Phil to be honest. But I don't think she and he are evil incarnate for telling a bunch of fat people that they are fat.

Horatio, I'm not saying that every fat person has hypothyroidism. But to imply that no one who is fat has the disease is equally wrong.

I'm not going to get deep into a debate about it, but your thyroid regulates your metabolism, so if you are hypothyroid, your metabolism is underperforming, making it nearly impossible to lose weight, even with extreme caloric restriction. Perhaps a person didn't get fat because of the disease, but because of menopause, soy consumption, genetics and other factors, they developed the disease and are unable to lose the weight.

Your attitude is exactly what women with the disease have dealt with from doctors for a long time, which leaves a vast number of people undiagnosed and putting them at risk for further health complications, even death.

I called the CoS PR department about that, and was told that the story was bogus, and that the source - the Sun newspaper in the UK - was part of a "right wing smear campaign" against the church. I was also told that the CoS has no deity or deities, and therefore Maverick could not be its Jesus.

Unfortunately, obesity is rarely so mechanistic. There are often genetic issues and family issues and, most often, outright food addiction and other eating disorders involved as well. These emotional issues are extremely difficult; our society does not know how to cope with them effectively. Hence, there is a lot of denial and people make all kinds of crazy excuses. What else are you going to do?

I have seen a few people (generally men) become obese out of (apparently) sheer bad habitry, but this is relatively rare.

The self-help industry is a mixed bag, and Rigorous posters (including, obvs, Jeff) have actually done a rather good job of pointing out its flaws, which are subtle but dangerous.

Really though, a lot of it is the homeostatic baseline set by the typically poor commercial diet fed to poor unwitting children.

I have a beer belly, and I've never been slender, but my Momma breast fed me, and then home made babyfood for me with fresh vegetables and fruits. She also used cloth diapers! (Damn hippies...)

There is more than meets the eye here, more than mere disease, and I suspect that hypothyroidism, in early or latent stages, could be corrected with self-discipline, like some types of diabetes.
