Yeah caught this a little way back. Nice little puzzler/thriller. Funny the money spent on some sci-fi films that just suck and sometimes you just need to be faithful to a clever little concept.JackRiddler » Tue Aug 16, 2016 4:47 pm wrote:Wow. Just saw this challenger to Primer in the category of time travel done seriously. I'm going to post the trailer, but DON'T WATCH IT, IT GIVES AWAY TOO MUCH.

How many movies give a starring role to Schrödinger's Cat?
That relates to one problem with it that I won't mention, however (as that would also be a spoiler).
It's rare that you watch a movie in which you see every single moment coming in advance and that's actually marvelous and gives it driving force.

Here's one big-budget scifi that hopefully won't suck too much. Directed by Dennis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) and based on a short story by Ted Chiang:

The truth hidden inside every Hollywood action hero /revenge fantasy. Harrowingly empathic.
It is a lot easier to fool people than show them how they have been fooled.

Director's follow up to Blue Ruin. It doesnt quite deliver on the promise of the first half & Patrick Stewart isn't half the boogeyman the trailer makes out, but still the most horrific movie I've seen in a long while.

Two quick reviews:
Bracing TV drama in a highly German style (no scene will start without a caption orienting you to location and significance) those of you nostalgic for the old cold war and the nuclear-war near-miss of 1983: Deutschland 83. Easy binge.
Embarrassing suck, and not just because it trashes everything the Terry Gilliam movie stood for: 12 Monkeys. Stopped that shit after three episodes (was curious how ridiculous it would get). You learn from your mistakes.

You could do a lot worse than spending an hour or so on these fine short films courtesy of https://aeon.co/:
My Enemy My Brother
How two enemy soldiers saved each other’s lives decades – and continents – apart
How airborne microbes ride clouds, hop continents and even make it rain
https://aeon.co/videos/how-airborne-microbes-....-make-it-rain
Kindness as self-defence – the power of ‘non-complementary behaviour’
Go underground with a little known artist who’s dug caves by hand for 20 years
And my personal favourite of this clutch, absolutely superb and at ten minutes leaves you wanting more:
An exuberant Oscar winning film on glass-blowing, automation and all that jazz

^^ Cute ^^
I usually stay away from Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton, but was swayed to watch, Our Brand is Crisis; about Rovian type political consultants promoting possible presidents to the Bolivian people for the PTB - sorta like this season's Wag the Dog. "You know, we want the money and the power and we want to grab that brass ring and... You know where that (brass-ring) comes from, don't you? The... the brass ring, that's from, um, carousel rides. That was the prize that you could grab so you could keep going around. What I was doing. I just kept going round and round and round. So I got out. I got off the carousel..."
"If you don't like the road you're on, start paving a new one."
"Is it soul stealing? Yeah, it's soul stealing. It's advertising. You convince people of something they don't need, and then you give it to them, and then you...And then you profit from it. I mean, this streamlines the process."
"Llamas. They supply us with meat, with wool, with milk." With new scientific farming methods, they can... can provide the key to Bolivia's economic recovery. Key to jobs. For centuries, the llamas led us through the mountains. "Now this animal will lead us to prosperity."

I looked forward to watching it but, after the 2005 documentary, couldn't stay with it. Recommend viewing this too:

Definitely felt like the cinema version had none of the teeth it should have -- huge waste of the cast, because the two leads could have done it great justice.
The original documentary still stands as the better work. Reminds me of "The War Room" in terms of a camera crew having way, way, way, way more access than they should have. Or even could have, today.

Yeah, just saw it. Watch the documentary instead. The movie's not so bad, but the wrong approach -- predictably, about the white woman's redemption. And I don't see why the real history needed to be tweaked. Would have worked better in the Wag the Dog or Network style.
Now here is a strong movie set in the same Bolivian events, sort of the same set up with the confused Western interlopers:

Yeah, the first half built a lot of momentum but I had to stop when they got out and the dogbite torture and kill-kill started.guruilla » Sat Aug 20, 2016 1:14 am wrote:

Has anyone seen this? I don't want to waste another $2 at Redbox. The trailer is pretty bad but trailers can be misleading. It could be a fun amusement park kind of ride.

I checked out Green Room at the weekend, thanks for the recommendation. Great thriller, I suppose you could quibble about some of the second act but I really liked it.
I love this thread, this is where I get my to-watch list. Thanks everyone.
