The swallows dart beneath the clouds
The river pulls westward toward the sea
The dead lay long beneath their shrouds
Confirming the nothing else that none can be
The spirit hands of trees offer peace to the sky
In their palms the engine songs of symphonies
When played right make an executioner cry
And drops him down quick to his bloody knees
The clouds move on to expose the naked blue
That bares the promised solitude of day
There is no way on earth of reaching you
Free of the tragedy of how I’d pay
The starlings war out the house sparrow nest
As the shadows foretell the purple clouds return
The best dreams are those that come with scant rest
What is there in the world that is not worth the yearn?
