I can hear where he's influenced Nirvana (hello, hello, hello) and many others, presuming he's not new-ish - can't tell these days with the heavy use of old-school film filters all the time, and nobody having changed their clothes in any way in the last 60 years and all that.
Lookswise he's like an angrier and less eloquent Phil Ochs. I am hoping it's not The Residents or Devo, because I have always intended to pretend I know what they look like if it ever came to it. But I don't have a clue what they look or sound like really. And it better not be Rivers Cuomo dressed up and fucking about again.
You know who has also played Glenuig Hall, though, back in the day. Fuckin' Bonnie "Prince" Billy:
no, that's nothing old, fairly newish 2008 or so, it's the band, Pissed Jeans (on subpop)
here's a video that should connect them and "Bonnie Prince" Billy (nice stuff there, need to check more of his work out, looks like he does a cover of I See a Darkness (which would tie in with the above posted Cash songs)
(I'm assuming Pissed Jeans at some point crossed paths with Neil Hamburger)

Now here's a thing. It was Johnny Cash who covered Bonnie Prince Billie's "I See A Darkness" rather than the other way around. Bonnie Prince Billie wrote it. So there.
But guess who wrote The Beach Boy's "Sloop John B." back in the day? It was fucking Johnny Cash.
With a wee bit of Trad arr. Seriously.
And thus the circle is complete.
I kind of hoped that the answer to my question of who that cool Ian Curtis/Phil Ochs style guy was wouldn't turn out to be "Ah, that's Pissed Jeans." But them's the breaks.
Bonnie Prince Billy is great, and so is that film, Dead Man's Shoes. He gave permission for them to use his music after they had finished filming, having never given permission to anybody before. Which either means nobody had asked or he actually liked the film.
