This can't be good
Houston will have NO shelters available.

Quote:
People unable to escape low-lying areas in Houston on their own were urged to call a city hot line, and Mayor Bill White said 10,000 people have called. Back Roads Aren't Helpful
The friends who were taking my kids to Dallas have just called and are turning around. They were taking the back roads. They've been on the road for more than 4 hours and have only traveled about 15 miles.

They are coming back and hope that when all the roads are opened for outbound traffic only, they might try again.

WHY HAVEN'T THEY OPENED THE ROADS?? ARE THEY TRAPPING US??

I apologize for that outburst, but I am in tears here.

In a news conference just now on CNN with the mayor of Houston, the mayor said the roads had not been changed to outbound only because essential federal personnel had not reported for duty.

What the fuck is going on?

So keep one inbound lane open and switch the rest. Can I have Michael Brown's old job now?

Plus...I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for those emergency personnel. However, I'm sure Gov. Goodhair Perry will get a little better treatment that Blanco did.

Perry? Saw him for the first time on tv last night. Lord that man is creepy, gave me the willies. I would hate to think of my safety being in his hands.

Re: israelirealities
There are no good ones any more, but Fox News is the worst of the worst. It would be nice if CBS had learned its lesson and started real reporting, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Fucking Emergency Manipulation Agency
This site now says incoming lane i-45 is open to outbound only now. Does that help you, GDN01. I hope so. I also hope it's true!

Quote:
To speed the evacuation out of the nation's fourth-largest city, Gov. Rick Perry ordered a halt to all southbound traffic into Houston along Interstate 45 and took the unprecedented step of directing the opening all eight lanes to northbound traffic out of the city for 125 miles. I-45 is the primary evacuation route north from Houston and nearby Galveston.

Meanwhile, the poor get screwed again:

Quote:
Although Houston is 60 miles inland, it is a low-lying, flat, sprawling city whose vast stretches of concrete cover clay soil that does not easily soak up water. The city is beribboned with seven bayous that overflow their banks even in a strong thunderstorm. Those bayous feed into the Ship Channel, Clear Lake and Galveston Bay.

Scientists have warned that the storm surge from a hurricane could cause the bayous' currents to reverse, pushing water back into the city and swamping mostly poor, Hispanic neighborhoods on the southeast side of Houston.

Both qutoes from here: www.azcentral.com/news/ar...22-ON.html

"So keep one inbound lane open and switch the rest. Can I have Michael Brown's old job now?"

Where did you get that quote from? Because you can't one lane open. You can switch them all, but not keep one open, because that'll be extremely dangerous since the merging traffic will then collide with the opposite traffic.

Education/advertising…as in public awareness campaign. Soon becomes common knowledge…at least in coastal cities…that, during evacuations, all but farthest left lane become outbound lanes. Always. Period.

Then no problem.

Everyone seemed to easily re-learn when “right-turn on red” law changed.

It's called a Jersey barrier.

They could most certainly switch them and keep one lane open.

Re: Fucking Emergency Manipulation Agency
No, that's the problem. If the furtherest left lane remains open it'll imply that you can never get off. So the only way is to keep the most right lane open, but that implies that merging traffic collides head on with the counterflow.

So merging will be fun in that system. Check if there is a space in front of you, check if there is space behind you and then merge very very quickly... because it'll be a 130 mph speed difference. Maybe the 130 mph hurricane will not sound so bad. After all it's only wind and not metal...
