Gilad Atzmon thread

I temporarily locked the Atzmon thread, and I'd like to get everyone's feedback on how to proceed.

I've been of the opinon that even though it was a very contentious thread about a very contentious topic, that Alice and C2W's contributions were thought-provoking, and worth keeping it afloat.

Unfortunately, it's gotten a bit out of hand:

Based on the last two pages, C2W, eyeno, and Willow are all deserving of suspensions.

C2W and Willow for personal attacks, and eyeno just because he's a fucking shit starter/pot stirrer extraordinaire, and I'm fed up with him.

As much as I hate to do it, I'd suspend C2W and Willow for 3 days each, and eyeno for a month, but I don't want to do anything so drastic without some backup, so ... what do you all think?

I think that a suspension is in order for how tempers got lost and lines got crossed by some of the most mature & astute and experienced contributors.

However, I'd like to ban Eyeno outright. I have advocated patience & tolerance in the past but in recent months the patterns I've seen emerge resemble nothing so much as a great big smirk. At this point, I see very little balance to the scales between contribution vs. disruption.

c2w has asked (again) for her account to be closed. I'm going to honour that. And I think it's time to ban eyeno outright. I'll take care of that, too. I think that's all I'd like to do for now. To go further could, I think, inflame the board even more. (Like, if we suspend Willow, then there's probably two or three others on the thread who also meet the criteria.)

Should we reopen the thread or leave it closed? I can see both sides. My preference is closed, but I know some take the shutting down of discussion hard. Is this still a discussion worth having? Is it still on topic or near enough?

Also, beyond Eyeno, are there any obvious trolls, maybe low post count, pushing hate speech?

IMO, that thread should have been gone a long time ago. But now I would just lock it and leave it as a monument to what RI shouldn't be. c2w lost her temper, but I would not suspend or ban her for that. As was pointed out in the thread, she showed amazing control for 80 pages.

I am now convinced that Eyeno is either multiple posters (i.e. managed personality) or one poster trying to write below his literacy level. Sometimes he slips. Compare "Does your mommy know you are on her computer in the basement studying (but not learning) rhetorical devices" to the rest of his corpus and I challenge you to argue that it is the same person. His repeated appeals to ignorance and innocence when he makes an outrageous statement or posts an offensive link are clearly a tactic.

Which brings me to Alice. I've noted before that her expressed positions are fundamentally racialist, and in some cases outright racist (i.e. the repeated biological and pathological metaphors for zionism, combined with her apparent lack of concern for conflating israeli, zionist, and jewish). But I still give her the benefit of the doubt as to intent. Although she may just be uncommonly good at navigating the rules in pursuit of an agenda that lies outside of them. But even if that is true, it seems that in her case an occasional nudge is enough to bring her back to civil discourse.

It's a really tough call, but I'd reopen the thread, and give C2W a day or two to change her mind.

If eyeno is gone forever, and slad can be convinced that the thread doesn't need another 50 hysterical, arm-waving posts pointing out that the Irish holocaust is overlooked, then I think there's a chance for it to get back on track.

As for eyeno being multiple posters ... it certainly wouldn't shock me, and I too have noticed that his writing style and level of intellect seems to rise and fall to suit his needs, but I don't detect his presence in this thread as anyone other than eyeno.

I advocated short suspensions for Willow and C2W so that we wouldn't appear biased, but if you feel that we can get away with overlooking their outbursts, Jeff, then that's how we should proceed.

eyeno just may be the missing link between chaos and an orderly board.

Honestly, was there anyone who really considered that to be a racist remark?

Because I'm aware of the fact that some personal attacks have gone unpunished recently, I'm going to allow all of the nonsense in this thread to slide, but be on notice that from this moment forward, if I see a personal attack, you'll be punished with a board suspension.

In addition, the Atzmon thread has been locked. Please respect that and don't move the conversation into other threads (like this one). If I see anything else on that topic (including personal grudge matches from that thread) spill onto the board, there will be suspensions.
