859 years old
very very sad
looks like it is just getting worse
the steeple just fell into the church....750 tons
I think it will burn to the ground ...heartbreaking
the roof has completely collapse
flames "flying 20m into the sky".

This is so fucking depressing. I know all the horrible things happening to people around the world should upset me more, but this just gets to me for some reason.

my great grandparents help build 2 churches in Chicago Old St. Pats...that survived the Great Fire of 1871 and St. Vincent de Paul
this is the St. Vincent stained glass window of St. Bridget in honor of my great grandmother Bridget. Her daughter paid for it
100_1332.jpeg
and Old St. Pat's beautiful Celtic paintings...it would have been a tragedy if the church had been destroyed in the fire

Isn't this a current event?
In all seriousness, why the tears? Doesn't this represent the evil patriarchy? Shouldn't this be in the Garden of Dicks thread?
Then there is the whole Christian bashing that is ever present on RI. Come on folks, you should be celebrating the destruction of this church built and and sustained by old white men. The irony is just amazing.

Celebrate? Please read what I wrote again.
I am not celebrating. It is all those who think Christianity is bunk, evil and should be abolished that should be. It is those that rail against the white patriarchy and all the old white men that have built things like this that should be celebrating.

I will not celebrate the destruction of history or art
so you think all art made by old white men should be destroyed or just the art in churches?
should this be destroyed?

In fact I believe none of it should be. I'm not the one who uses RI as a pulpit to rail on old white men and the patriarchy along with Christianity. Artwork created by men who maintained a society ruled by the Church.
Oh well, the irony is lost. No matter.
Personally, it's upsetting to see something so beautiful destroyed. But it is only a building. Nostalgia is a trap.

the appreciation of history and art is not nostalgia ( wistful affection for the past) especially 859 year old history
