^ Curiosity’s Landing Through the Eyes
of One of Her 3,000 Builders

FROM UNIVERSE TODAY | 15AUG12. We all have seminal moments that mark our lives; some just are way more cool than others. Mark Rober designs spacecraft at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is just one of over 3,000 people who helped design, build, tweak, launch, navigate and land the Curiosity Rover on Mars. “I spent 7 years working NASA’s Curiosity Rover,” Rober said via Twitter. “I made this video to try to capture what it felt like to see her land.”

^ We’re NASA and We Know It | WARNING: SATIRE

FROM UNIVERSE TODAY | 16AUG12. “In honor of Curiosity’s touchdown, we made a video spoofing life in the NASA control room,” wrote Alexander Theoharis. “We think the Mars Curiosity rover has the chance to really inspire people to become excited about space, science, and engineering, and so we made this video as a fun, lighthearted, and easily-sharable way to support what NASA is doing and help others get excited about it too.”

Life Beyond Earth and the Mind of Man - 1975
This film is an edited version of a symposium held at Boston University on November 20, 1972 that explores the implications of the possible existence of extraterrestrial life within the galaxy and the universe. The panel members were Dr. Richard Berendzen, astronomy professor and historian of science at Boston University; Dr. Ashley Montagu, anthropologist, social biologist and author at Rutgers University; Dr. Philip Morrison, physicist educator and philosopher of science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Dr. Carl Sagan, astronomer and exobiologist at Cornell University; Dr. Krister Stendahl, clergyman and theologian at Harvard University; and Dr. George Wald, biologist at Harvard University.

Renowned actor, writer, and director Orson Welles — with contributions from scientists George Wald, Carl Sagan, and others — examines the possibility and implications of extraterrestrial life. In examining our perceptions of alien 'martians' from his "War of the Worlds" broadcast, to then-modern explorations of Mars, this film from NASA provides a unique glimpse at life on earth, and elsewhere in the universe.

SUMMARY
This film explores the new view of extraterrestrial life now emerging from the results of probes to the planets. The film discusses the conclusion of a number of distinguished scientists that other intelligent civilizations exist in the universe.

How interesting, Drew! I’m understanding now why some people, with whom I’ve been associated, have been interested in Mars and Carl Sagan over the last two decades. Their interest however didn’t seem to rub off on me until very recently.
Thank you.
justdrew wrote:An interesting question would be how large of a black hole would be required to store all the information in the video on youtube and at what rate would it be growing?
I’ve not a clue :)! But, evidently, there are zillions of black holes to choose from, eh?

^ Here’s Dr. Feryal Özel. She’s an Associate Professor, Astronomy/Steward Observatory, University of Arizona. Her interests in black holes were presented March 1, 2011.

This is a full-resolution version of the NASA Curiosity rover descent to Mars, taken by the MARDI descent imager. As of August 20, all but a dozen 1600x1200 frames have been uploaded from the rover, and those missing were interpolated using thumbnail data.

^ JPL’s Adam Steltzner Narrates Curiosity’s Landing Choreography
by Nancy Atkinson, Universe Today | 24AUG12

This video provides a step-by-step explanation of the choreography needed to land NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars. It starts with a computer simulation from NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System program and uses actual images from Curiosity’s Mars Descent Imager. It ends with a high-resolution color image from Curiosity’s Mast Camera. Entry, Descent and Landing team leader Adam Steltzner provides the play-by-play commentary.
