Threat to U.S. warships may have been a hoax

CAIRO, Egypt — A threatening radio message at the end of a video showing Iranian patrol boats swarming near U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf may have come from a prankster rather than from the Iranian vessels, the Navy Times newspaper has reported.

A video and audio of the Jan. 6 incident in the Strait of Hormuz featured a man in accented English saying, “I am coming to you. . . . You will explode after . . . minutes.”

Cmdr. Lydia Robertson, spokeswoman for the Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, said the Navy was still trying to determine the source of the transmission but believed it was related to the Iranian actions.

“The Iranian boats were coming close to the ships, making aggressive maneuvers and objects were being dropped into the water,” she told the Associated Press.

However, the Navy Times, a weekly newspaper published by Gannett, quoted several veteran sailors as speculating the transmission could have come from a radio heckler.

The newspaper, which serves the Navy community, said U.S. sailors in the Persian Gulf have heard the prankster — possibly more than one person — transmitting “insults and jabbering vile epithets” on unencrypted frequencies.

“Navy women — a helicopter pilot hailing a tanker, for example — who are overheard on the radio are said to suffer particularly degrading treatment,” the newspaper said Sunday. “Several Navy ship drivers interviewed by Navy Times are raising the possibility that the [heckler], or an imitator, was indeed featured in that video.”

U.S. Navy officials at Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain could not immediately be reached for comment. However, Navy officials have said they were unsure where the transmission came from.

The threat ratcheted up tensions in the incident, which began when Iranian patrol boats swarmed around three U.S. Navy vessels near Iranian waters in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has denied that its boats threatened the U.S. vessels and accused Washington of fabricating the video and audio it released. Iran’s government has released its own video, which appeared to be shot from a small boat bobbing at least yards from the American warships.

The Navy Times quoted Rick Hoffman, a retired captain, as saying a renegade heckler repeatedly harassed ships in the gulf in the late 1980s.

I nodded. I'd still been in the Mossad when that order was given, and because of my naval background and acquaintance with most of the commanders in the navy, I participated in the planning for the operation as liaison with the navy.

A Trojan was a special communication device that could be planted by naval commandos deep inside enemy territory. The device would act as a relay station for misleading transmissions made by the disinformation unit in the Mossad, called LAP, and intended to be received by American and British listening stations. Originating from an IDF navy ship out at sea, the prerecorded digital transmissions could be picked up only by the Trojan. The device would then rebroadcast the transmission on another frequency, one used for official business in the enemy country, at which point the transmission would finally be picked up by American ears in Britain.

The listeners would have no doubt they had intercepted a genuine communication, hence the name Trojan, reminiscent of the mythical Trojan horse. Further, the content of the messages, once deciphered, would confirm information from other intelligence sources, namely the Mossad. ...

In the particular operation Ephraim was referring to, two elite units in the military had been made responsible for the delivery of the Trojan device to the proper location. One was the Matkal reconnaissance unit and the other was Flotilla 13, the naval commandos. The commandos were charged with the task of planting the Trojan device in Tripoli, Libya.

By the end of March, the Americans were already intercepting messages broadcast by the Trojan, which was only activated during heavy communication traffic hours. Using the Trojan, the Mossad tried to make it appear that a long series of terrorist orders were being transmitted to various Libyan embassies around the world (or, as they were called by the Libyans, Peoples' Bureaus). As the Mossad had hoped, the transmissions were deciphered by the Americans and construed as ample proof that the Libyans were active sponsors of terrorism. What's more, the Americans pointed out, Mossad reports confirmed it.

The French and the Spanish, though, were not buying into the new stream of information. To them, it seemed suspicious that suddenly, out of the blue, the Libyans, who'd been extremely careful in the past, would start advertising their future actions. They also found it suspicious that in several instances Mossad reports were worded similarly to coded Libyan communications.

The Trojan gave the Americans the proof they needed. ...Ultimately, the Americans fell for the Mossad ploy head over heels dragging the British and the Germans somewhat reluctantly in with them. Operation Trojan was one of the Mossad's greatest successes. It brought about the air strike on Libya that President Reagan had promised - a strike that had three important consequences. First, it derailed a deal for the release of the American hostages in Lebanon, thus preserving the Hizballah (Party of God) as the number one enemy in the eyes of the West. Second, it sent a message to the entire Arab world, telling them exactly where the United States stood regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict. Third, it boosted the Mossad's image of itself, since it was they who, by ingenious sleight of hand, had prodded the United States to do what was right. It was only the French who didn't buy into the Mossad trick and were determined not to ally themselves with the aggressive American act. The French refused to allow the American bombers to fly over their territory on their way to attack Libya.

On April 14, 1986, one hundred and sixty American aircraft dropped over sixty tons of bombs on Libya. The attackers bombed Tripoli international airport, Bab al Azizia barracks, Sidi Bilal naval base, the city of Benghazi, and the Benine airfield outside Benghazi. The strike force consisted of two main bodies, one originating in England and the other from flattops in the Mediterranean.

The Mossad had all but saturated the intelligence field with information regarding the evil intentions of Saddam the Terrible, banking on the fact that before long, he'd have enough rope to hang himself. It was very clear what the Mossad's overall goal was. It wanted the West to do its bidding, just as the Americans had in Libya with the bombing of Qadhafi. After all, Israel didn't possess carriers and ample air power, and although it was capable of bombing a refugee camp in Tunis, that was not the same. The Mossad leaders knew that if they could make Saddam appear bad enough and a threat to the Gulf oil supply, of which he'd been the protector up to that point, then the United States and its allies would not let him get away with anything, but would take measures that would all but eliminate his army and his weapons potential, especially if they were led to believe that this might just be their last chance before he went nuclear.

How the Pentagon planted a false story

WASHINGTON - Senior Pentagon officials, evidently reflecting a broader administration policy decision, used an off-the-record Pentagon briefing to turn the January 6 US-Iranian incident in the Strait of Hormuz into a sensational story demonstrating Iran's military aggressiveness, a reconstruction of the events following the incident shows.

The initial press stories on the incident, all of which can be traced to a briefing by deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs in charge of media operations, Bryan Whitman, contained similar information that has since been repudiated by the navy itself.

Then the navy disseminated a short video into which was spliced the audio of a phone call warning that US warships would "explode" in "a few seconds". Although it was ostensibly a navy production, Inter Press Service (IPS) has learned that the ultimate decision on its content was made by top officials of the Defense Department.

The encounter between five small and apparently unarmed speedboats, each carrying a crew of two to four men, and the three US warships occurred very early on Saturday January 6, Washington time. No information was released to the public about the incident for more than 24 hours, indicating that it was not viewed initially as being very urgent.

The reason for that absence of public information on the incident for more than a full day is that it was not that different from many others in the Gulf over more than a decade. A Pentagon consultant who asked not to be identified told IPS he had spoken with officers who had experienced similar encounters with small Iranian boats throughout the 1990s, and that such incidents are "just not a major threat to the US Navy by any stretch of the imagination".

Just two weeks earlier, on December 19, the USS Whidbey Island, an amphibious warship, had fired warning shots after a small Iranian boat allegedly approached it at high speed. That incident had gone without public notice.

With the reports from Fifth Fleet commander Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff in hand early that morning, top Pentagon officials had all day Sunday, January 6, to discuss what to do about the encounter in the Strait of Hormuz. The result was a decision to play it up as a major incident.

The article gets into the "prank" radio transmission as well, but doesn't doesn't make any connections to a Mossad Trojan. Thanks for the background on that, Alice. Hadn't run across that before.

Thanks for this update on the apparant radio-hoax, and esp. the info that the Pentagon decided to deliberately play-up a rather routine, trivial non-event to keep the 'Iran Terror!' meme floating -- something to be expected of an out-of-control bureaucracy that has historically and now increasingly depended on and made use of false-flag and hyped pretexts to promote US corporate/business interests as well as self-aggrandizing military career prospects.

Thanks too Alice for that Ostrovsky excerpt -- I don't recall ever reading that much detail on the radio-beacon scheme that led to the 1986 bombing of Libya by Reagan. But considering that the suspects of the Berlin disco (which was linked to the Libyan terror-order 'intercepts' of the planted radio signals and that was the actual pretext for Reagan's bombing) were apparently CIA as well as Mossad agents, doesn't that indicate the US (or at least top brass in the Pentagon and CIA) had to know the signals were a false-flag? In order for them to coordinate the disco bombings with the planted radio intercepts? Unless the suspects with CIA links were free-agents working for Mossad at the time of the bombing, unknown to the Pentagon and CIA? Since apparently the Mossad had mounted and executed the false-flag op in secret from the CIA/US. And: Is there any indication the Pentagon/CIA ever publicly acknowledged the radio signals were bogus, and that they suspected the Mossad? It seems incredible that they didn't know at the time, but then this might have been carefully hidden by a few CIA or US officials who were in a position to keep the Mossad's scheme hidden, perhaps long enough to decieve Reagan so he would seek retribution. Of course, it seems if this was a real terrorist plot then it would have been far more effective for the US, Germany and other concerned states to investigate and prosecute this as an international crime -- instead of the US taking unilateral action and risking the good will and cooperation of regional Arab regimes -- which as it is, seems to be what happened when evidence surfaced pointing to falseness of the claim. I don;t think the US has ever acknowledged they were suckered or bombed Libya 'in error' -- let alone apologized for it. (Isn't that the way it ALWAYS goes?)

But in light of the evidence that this was an Israeli false-flag among other notable false-flags, deceptions, spying, espionage, betrayals and nuclear blackmail, it is astonishing that the US has maintained its unquestioning close ties and support for Israel. But then, US policy is so heavily corrupted by the MIC and State Dept. criminal intrigue overthrowing third world governments for the sake of perpetrating IMF/World Bank fraud and enable their plundering by US and US-allied corporations -- nothing's really 'astonishing' anymore when it comes to the US acting as a reckless rogue state, undermining democracy and acting contrary to the principles of social justice and human/civil rights.

This article detailing the evidence the Berlin Disco was a false flag plot is important in trying to understand whether US officials knew the Libyan radio signals were fake, and whether the Disco bombing was also a false flag. It's noteable because several bombing suspects had links to terrorist cells in Germany, while others worked as 'free agents' -- and many have since been protected by Israel and the US, complicating the trial. It's also interesting to note that leading politicos esp. Republicans urged Clinton to use the Reagan bombing as a pretext to launch his own retaliatory attacks on Afghanistan and Sudan, which inevitably provoked great resentment and support for anti-American terrorism -- thus fueling the War on Terror boondoggle (allying the US even closer with Israel and deflecting world attention from Israel's ongoing repression and atrocities against Palestinians). Were the US Embassy attacks in Kenya and Tanzania also covert false flag attacks mounted by the CIA or Mossad, or perhaps by both in partnership?

What a deep rabbit hole this all is. One thing for certain -- the US's complicity in waging war and engaging in and supporting terrorism for hidden and sinister purposes goes back a LONG way -- it's absurd to consider the US as the 'good guy' fighting 'evil'. Perhaps to a great extent, the US public understands this on a gut level and is appalled by it, wishing things would change and the US could reform itself, and THIS is the major change the voters want which the politicos and prez. candidates are only giving lip-service to -- since they know no fundamental change is possible without being truthful, and too many people would be politically and economically damaged for that to EVER be allowed. Its a vicious catch-22: No change without Truth, and No truth without Change. That's why I believe America's role in the world won't change unless there's a profound, catalyzing event -- perhaps something on the order of a disasterous world-changing asteroid strike, or a supervolcanic eruption, plunging the whole world into a new dark ages. I also believe a major factor in the US's engaging in ever-greater acts of war, intrigue, terrorism and lies are the direct result of the instruments and agents of the state protecting themselves and national security secrets re: their past abuses, frauds, lies, schemes and warcrimes which detail that the US is actually the world's most dangerous enemy of democracy, liberty and rule of law -- something that its victims know all too well but most Americans just don't 'get'. Yet. I very much doubt the following story or the details of the German documentary and trial recieved much if ANY regular 'news' coverage in the US, home of the <gag> 'free press'.

German TV exposes CIA, Mossad links to 1986 Berlin disco bombing

A documentary broadcast August 25 by German public television presents compelling evidence that some of the main suspects in the 1986 Berlin disco bombing, the event that provided the pretext for a US air assault on Libya, worked for American and Israeli intelligence.

The report, aired by Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF television), is of the greatest relevance to events of the past three weeks, in which attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania have become the justification for US missile strikes against Afghanistan and Sudan, and a shift in American foreign policy to an even more unbridled use of military force internationally.

With Washington declaring "war against terrorism" and arrogating to itself the right to use its military might unilaterally against any target anywhere in the world, the German TV report raises the most serious and disturbing questions. All the more so, since the US media and leading Republican politicians, within hours of the American embassy bombings, began citing Reagan's 1986 air attack on Libya as an exemplary response to terrorist attacks, and pressed Clinton to carry out similar military action.

The air strike on Libya
On April 15, 1986 US war planes bombed the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. They destroyed the home of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and killed at least 30 civilians, including many children. Gaddafi himself, the main target of the air strike, was not hurt.

Two hours later President Ronald Reagan justified the unprecedented attack on a sovereign country and its head of state in a national television address. The US, Reagan claimed, had "direct, precise and irrefutable" proof that Libya was responsible for a bomb blast in a West Berlin discotheque. The explosion 10 days earlier at the disco La Belle, a favorite nightspot for US soldiers, had killed three people and injured 200.
Since November of 1997 five defendants have been on trial in a Berlin court for their alleged involvement in the La Belle attack. But in the course of more than half a year the case has proceeded very slowly. ZDF television, which carried out its own investigation into the case, explained why in the August 25 documentary produced by its political magazine Frontal.

What the German documentary reveals
The Frontal report arrives at the following conclusions:
1) The lead defendant presently on trial, Yasser Chraidi, is very possibly innocent, and is being used as a scapegoat by German and American intelligence services.
2) At least one of the defendants, Musbah Eter, has been working for the CIA over many years.
3) Some of the key suspects have not appeared in court, because they are being protected by Western intelligence services.
4) At least one of those, Mohammed Amairi, is an agent of Mossad, the Israeli secret service.

The man charged with being the mastermind of the La Belle attack, 38-year-old Yasser Chraidi, was a driver at the Libyan embassy in East Berlin in 1986. He later moved to Lebanon, from whence he was extradited to Germany in May 1996.

Frontal interviewed the two Lebanese responsible for the extradition of Chraidi: the former public prosecutor Mounif Oueidat and his deputy Mrad Azoury. Both confirm that the German authorities used deceit to have Chraidi extradited.

According to Azoury, he received no evidence that Chraidi was actually involved in the attack; there were only "hints." Oueidat states that the Germans showed tremendous interest in getting Chraidi. "The Americans were behind this demand," he says. "This was obvious. They spurred on the Germans to speed up the extradition."

Eventually Chraidi, declared to be a "top terrorist," was flown to Germany in a spectacular security operation. But a Berlin judge found the evidence presented by the prosecution so weak, he threatened to release Chraidi within three weeks unless more proof was presented.

At this point another man was brought into the case, who, according to Frontal, "was obviously supposed to be spared by the prosecution until then." On September 9, 1996, the very day the Berlin judge threatened to release Chraidi, Berlin public prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, Berlin police inspector Uwe Wilhelms and a Mr. Winterstein of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) met Musbah Eter in the Mediterranean island state of Malta.

CIA involvement
The meeting had been prepared by the BND, which maintains close connections to its American counterpart, the CIA. Musbah Eter was running an international business in Malta, which, according to Frontal, served as a cover for extensive intelligence operations on behalf of the CIA.

The German authorities wanted him on a murder charge. But during the Malta meeting a deal was struck: "Immunity for Eter, if he incriminates Chraidi for La Belle." The next day Eter went to the German embassy and testified. As a result, the warrant against him was scrapped and he was allowed to travel to Germany.

In the words of Frontal, Eter is "the key figure in the La Belle trial." At the time of the disco bomb attack he worked for the Libyan embassy in East Berlin. But he paid regular visits to the US embassy. According to Christian Ströbele, the lawyer for Chraidi, this highly unusual fact is proven by extensive notes of the East German secret police, who watched Eter very closely at the time.

There are many indications that Eter was actively involved in the La Belle bombing. According to interrogation transcripts studied by Frontal, he had the detailed knowledge of a participant. He even admitted that he brought the operating instructions for the bomb to the flat of a codefendant.
Frontal asserts that besides the defendants in the present trial, another group was involved in the La Belle bombing--a group of professional terrorists, working for anybody who paid them, led by a certain "Mahmoud" Abu Jaber. Members of this group, according to Frontal, "have barely been bothered by the prosecution and live securely in other countries."

In the months preceding the La Belle attack they lived in East Berlin and met, almost on a daily basis, with the present defendants. Hours before the attack they moved to West Berlin, where the bomb exploded. Their movements were monitored by the East German and Russian secret services, who concluded that they were working for Western intelligence.
The Russian KGB, in a document cited by Frontal, gave the opinion that American counterintelligence planned to use "Mahmoud" to concoct a case for the involvement of Libyan terrorists in the attack. According to the same KGB document, "Mahmoud" had warned West Berlin intelligence two days before the explosion.

Frontal followed the traces of Mohammed Amairi, the right-hand man of "Mahmoud" Abu Jaber, who, according to the documents it has studied, "was particularly involved in the preparation of the La Belle attack."

An agent of Mossad
Amairi left Germany for Norway in 1990, when a warrant was issued for his arrest. He now lives in the Norwegian town of Bergen, where Frontal found and interviewed him. He stopped the interview when he was asked what secret service he had been working for. His lawyer, Odd Drevland, finally told the story.

When Amairi moved to Norway he was arrested and branded "a danger to the country" on the front page of tabloids. But then the Israeli secret service Mossad took charge of him and "everything changed."
"Was Amairi a Mossad agent?" asked Frontal. "He was a Mossad man," answered Drevland.

In the meantime, Norway has granted asylum to Amairi and he will soon receive Norwegian citizenship. The Berlin prosecutor has lifted the warrant against him.

"These secret service intrigues present a task for the Berlin court that is almost insoluble," concludes the Frontal report. "But one thing is certain, the American legend of Libyan state terrorism can no longer be maintained."

Sorry, Hugh, but that's just silly. Israel is panting for the U.S. to attack Iran, and this latest mini "Gulf of Tonkin" is another in a long chain of increasingly desperate Mossad plots to provoke such an attack.

Regardless of all the hot air about Israel attacking Iran if the U.S. won't, that's out of the question: Israel has become accustomed to using the U.S. to do its dirty work. As proven by Israel's humiliating defeat in its war of aggression against tiny Lebanon's resistance volunteers, Israel, despite its massive arsenal of WMD's generously supplied by the American taxpayers, likes to profit from wars, not pay for them.

And why should it? With its sophisticated network of spies and moles deeply embedded at the highest levels of the U.S. military and political decision-making, in addition to the media, and decades of profitable experience in getting away with false-flag attacks against the U.S., attacking the U.S. makes FAR more sense than attacking Iran.

After all, Iran would retaliate against Israel, but the U.S. would "retaliate" against Iran...

It calls the Israeli armed forces a "500-pound gorilla in Israel. Well armed and trained. Operates in both Gaza [and the West Bank]. Known to disregard international law to accomplish mission. Very unlikely to fire on American forces."

On the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, the Army study says, "Wildcard. Ruthless and cunning. Has capability to target U.S. forces and make it look like a Palestinian/Arab act."

Prior to 9/11, the FBI had discovered the presence of a massive spy ring inside the United States run by the government of Israel. This seems a harsh gratitude from a nation which obtains 10% of its annual budget from the American taxpayer, $3+ billion a year. ...

What Israel has done in return was to set up government subsidized telecommunications companies which operate here in the United States. One of these companies is Amdocs, which provides billing and directory assistance for 90% of the phone companies in the USA.

Amdocs' main computer center for billing is actually in Israel and allows those with access to do what intelligence agencies call "traffic analysis"; a picture of someone's activities based on a pattern of who they are calling and when.

Another Israeli telecom company is Comverse Infosys, which subcontracts the installation of the automatic tapping equipment now built into every phone system in America. Comverse maintains its own connections to all this phone tapping equipment, insisting that it is for maintenance purposes only.

However, Converse has been named as the most likely source for leaked information regarding telephone calls by law enforcement that derailed several investigations into not only espionage, but drug running as well.

Yet another Israeli telecom company is Odigo, which provides the core message passing system for all the "Instant Message" services. Two hours before the attacks on the World Trade Towers, Odigo employees received a warning. Odigo has an office 2 blocks from the former location of the World Trade Towers.

The implication of these facts is that the billions of our tax dollars sent to Israel (while women and children sleep in America's alleys and eat out of trash bins) have bought and paid for a monstrous phone tracking and phone tapping system that can eavesdrop on almost any phone call in America. Even the White House phones were open to such tapping by listening in on the other end outside the White House itself.

This actually happened. The Ken Starr report on Whitewater describes how Bill Clinton informed Monica Lewinsky that their phone sex conversations had been recorded. At the same time, Clinton ordered the FBI to cease the hunt for an Israeli mole known to be operating inside the White House itself!

So here we have a foreign nation able to listen in on most phones at will, using taps that cannot be found because they are built into the phone system itself, and willing to use the information gleaned from those calls to blackmail Americans into any desired course of action. This may well be what Ariel Sharon meant when he stated that the Jewish people control America.

That the information gleaned from these phone taps is being used to coerce the behavior of key individuals in the US Government and media is illustrated by the manner in which the government and the media have handled this scandal of the largest spy ring ever uncovered inside the United States, and of phone taps on all of our phones. Fox News, alone of all the media, actually ran the story as a four part broadcast, and put the story up on its web site. Then, without explanation, Fox News erased the story from their web site and have never mentioned it again. CNN followed by "Orwellizing" their report of the two hour advance warning of the WTC attacks sent to Odigo employees. But far more telling is the admission made by a US Official in part one of the Fox News report that hard evidence existed linking the events of 9/11 not to Arab Muslims, but to some of the more than 200 Israeli spies arrested both before and after 9/11, but that this evidence had been CLASSIFIED.

...Today I participated in a round table discussion on the RBN radio network with Eric Shine and others, including Michael Collins Piper and the "Israeli" journalist Barry Chamish.

I put "Israeli" in quotations because Mr. Chamish is actually and originally a Canadian citizen.

Finally, I had to ask Mr. Chamish about his position on the role of Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu in the "war on terror" and the abundance of evidence that Israel was involved in the terror attacks of 9/11.

Chamish said that Netanyahu is basically an agent of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and added that he was not personally convinced that the criminal Zionist gang was behind the terror of 9/11.

I followed that response with a question about the relationship between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Menachem Atzmon, the man who oversaw passenger screening and airport security at Boston's Logan Airport on 9/11, as owner of ICTS, the parent company of Huntleigh USA.

Mr. Chamish seemed quite surprised that I knew of this relationship and said that if, indeed, Atzmon was responsible for security at Boston's airport on 9/11, then it was worthy of being followed up, because Olmert and Atzmon are truly very close political allies and co-defendants in old Likud crimes:

A mole called Mega

The scandal over a suspected Israeli mole in the Pentagon who allegedly passed highly sensitive policy documents on Iran to Israeli agents in Washington has rekindled suspicions long held by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and others in Washington, that Israel systematically spies on its strategic ally and benefactor.

The FBI probe currently under way goes far beyond the allegations that a lone analyst was providing the Israelis with US secrets.

Shortly before George Tenet retired as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in June, he alleged that an Israeli agent was operating in Washington. Tenet was challenged to identify the agent but for reasons that were never explained apparently did not do so. For years, the FBI has been convinced that there is at least one high-level Israeli mole in Washington.

The Tenet episode underlined growing unease in some quarters in Washington about the influence that Israel's right wing has in US President George W Bush's administration through the pro-Likud neo-conservatives, largely in the Pentagon, and the politically powerful America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and loosely associated organisations, such as the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. The Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence service, is known to seek out Jews around the world to serve as informal agents, known in Hebrew as sayanim or 'helpers'.

The Israeli government and AIPAC have strenuously denied that they were involved in the current scandal. But Israel's intelligence organisations have been spying on the US and running clandestine operations since Israel was established. These operations range from spiriting an estimated 200 lbs of weapons-grade uranium for its secret nuclear arms programme in the 1960s to widescale industrial espionage.

Much of this is conducted by the secret Scientific Liaison Bureau, known by its Hebrew acronym Lakam, run by the Ministry of Defence and its equally little-known successor, Malmab (the Security Authority for the Ministry of Defence).

"I applaud President Bush for this outstanding choice," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). "We are proud to have a man of his caliber and talent serving and protecting the American people."

"Our country is very fortunate to have someone with the background, experience, the intellect, the qualifications and the integrity of Judge Chertoff," Senator Susan Collins (R. Maine), chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said.

After six hours of debate, Collins urged the Senate to act quickly on Chertoff's nomination.

During the period before and after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, Chertoff headed the criminal division at the Department of Justice where he "helped trace the 9/11 terrorist attacks to the al-Qaida network."

Chertoff became Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, by a vote of 95-1 on May 24, 2001. The dissenting vote came from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D. N.Y.).

In this position Chertoff was architect of some of the most controversial elements of the Bush administration's domestic war on terrorism and played a central role in formulating the Bush administration's "anti-terrorism policy." He defended the administration's decisions to hold military tribunals for non-U.S. suspect terrorists and to monitor phone conversations between attorneys and their clients.

Chertoff oversaw the detention of 762 foreign nationals for minor immigration violations, although none was charged with a terrorism-related crime. The detention of hundreds of people was necessary to detect "sleeper cells" of terrorists, he said.

"Chertoff headed the Justice Department's criminal division when hundreds of foreigners were swept up on minor charges and held for an average of 80 days," The Washington Post reported. "Some detainees were denied their right to see a lawyer, were not told of the charges against them, or were physically abused."

At the same time, Chertoff allowed scores of suspected Israeli terrorists and spies to quietly return to Israel. In several cases, Israeli suspects working for phoney moving companies, such as Urban Moving Systems from Weehawken, N.J., were caught driving moving vans which tested positive for explosives. On September 14, Dominic Suter, the owner of the moving company, which was found to be a Mossad front company, fled to Israel after FBI agents requested a second interview.

One group of 5 Israelis was seen on the roof of Urban Moving Systems videotaping and celebrating the destruction of the World Trade Center. These Israeli agents were returned to Israel on visa violations.

These Israeli suspects, and others, who had apparently transported explosives in the New York area, were allowed to return to Israel without being properly interrogated or their presence and activities in the United States having been vigorously investigated.

The fact that tens of thousands of American citizens were left stranded for days on end without the essentials of life and that bloated corpses lay rotting in the streets of New Orleans for more than ten days shocked the nation.

It seemed as if terrorism was being perpetrated against the people of New Orleans with a dose of psychological terrorism for the nation as a whole. But who is to blame?

"What is remarkable," Dan Barry wrote in his article, "Macabre Reminder: The Corpse on Union Street," in the New York Times on Sept. 8, "is that on a downtown street in a major American city, a corpse can decompose for days, like carrion, and that is acceptable."

"This is Not America"

"It is not acceptable," Michael Johnson of Houston responded. "There is no excuse to allow dead bodies to rot in the street while people just walk by…If it is acceptable, which apparently it is to the authorities, then this is not America anymore."

"We have been abandoned by our own country," Aaron Broussard, president of Jefferson Parish, south of New Orleans, told NBC's Meet the Press.

Federal officials, however, steadfastly refused to answer the key question every reporter asked: "Who is to blame for the delayed and ineffective federal response?"

When Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), arrived in Louisiana several days after the flood, he became testy when a reporter asked who was to blame for the failure of the federal government to respond more quickly and effectively.

The time to assign blame would come later, he said. Chertoff is the Israeli-American former Asst. Attorney General who managed the investigation of the 9-11 attacks, an investigation in which scores of Israeli terror suspects were released on visa violations.

"As it happens," the New Yorker reported, "Chertoff was the senior Justice Department official on duty at the F.B.I. command center right after the attacks." His office became "the funnel for what is probably the most important criminal investigation in American history, as prosecutors and F.B.I. investigators pour in to seek the boss's approval," Jeffrey Toobin wrote in November 2001. "For day-to-day decisions, Chertoff has the last word."

On Sept. 14, the U.S. Senate rejected, by a party-line vote of 44 to 54, a bill introduced by Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), which would have created a blue-ribbon bipartisan panel to investigate the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina.

Chertoff, a graduate of Harvard Law School, knows who is legally responsible for the delayed and inadequate federal response to Hurricane Katrina, a failure that undoubtedly exacerbated the human suffering and caused an untold number of lives to be lost. The responsibility is all his.

President George W. Bush signed the Homeland Security Presidential Directive [HSPD-5] on February 28, 2003, which makes the DHS secretary the legal authority in such disasters.

The National Response Plan of 2004 states: "Pursuant to HSPD-5, the Secretary of Homeland Security is responsible for coordinating Federal operations within the United States to prepare for, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks, major disasters, and other emergencies."

HSPD-5 mandates: "If the resources of state and local authorities are overwhelmed and federal assistance has been requested by the appropriate State and local authorities," the DHS Secretary is responsible "to coordinate the Federal Government's resources."

Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, governor of Louisiana, along with the state's Office of Homeland Security, had formally requested federal assistance and asked President Bush to "declare an expedited major disaster" on August 28. Blanco had already declared a state of emergency on August 26, three days before the hurricane made landfall on August 29.

In an apparent attempt to shield Chertoff from blame, Bush accepted responsibility for any failures of the federal government in its response to the catastrophe.

Earlier, on Sept. 9, Michael D. Brown, director of the FEMA, a sub-agency of DHS, had been recalled from New Orleans by Chertoff. Amid a growing scandal, Brown resigned on Sept. 12.

"Chertoff was in Charge"

"But Chertoff - not Brown - was in charge of managing the national response to a catastrophic disaster," Knight Ridder (KR) reported the following day.

"Even before the storm struck the Gulf Coast, Chertoff could have ordered federal agencies into action without any request from state or local officials," KR reported. "FEMA chief Michael Brown had only limited authority to do so until about 36 hours after the storm hit, when Chertoff designated him as the 'principal federal official' in charge of the storm."

A DHS memo signed by Chertoff indicates that he formally granted Brown that authority on August 30. "Chertoff didn't shift that power to Brown until late afternoon or evening on Aug. 30, about 36 hours after Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi," KR reported.

Chertoff and FEMA had plenty of advance warning about Katrina. Dr. Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center, told the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Sept. 4 that senior DHS and FEMA officials, including Chertoff and Brown, had been fully briefed by his staff long before Katrina made landfall.

"We were briefing them way before landfall," Mayfield said. "It's not like this was a surprise. We had in the advisories that the levee could be topped.

"I keep looking back to see if there was anything else we could have done, and I just don't know what it would be," he said. Chertoff, however, told reporters Saturday that government officials had not expected the damaging combination of a powerful hurricane and the levee breaches that flooded New Orleans.

In the days before Katrina hit, Mayfield said, his staff had briefed FEMA headquarters in Washington, D.C. and its offices in Dallas and Atlanta about the potential effects of the storm.

Mayfield said the briefings were logged in the hurricane center's records, and that his staff had participated in a five-day exercise in July 2004 named "Hurricane Pam," which had been sponsored by FEMA and the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness in which a storm like Katrina hit the city.

FEMA's news release of July 23, 2004, announced the end of the Pam exercise, which was very similar to what Katrina actually delivered:

"Hurricane Pam brought sustained winds of 120 mph, up to 20 inches of rain in parts of southeast Louisiana and storm surge that topped levees in the New Orleans area. More than one million residents evacuated and Hurricane Pam destroyed 500,000-600,000 buildings."

Dismantled FEMA

"To increase overall preparedness, particularly for catastrophic events," Chertoff announced a reorganization of FEMA on July 13, 2005. He dismantled the Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate, of which FEMA comprised the bulk and was headed by a full under secretary.

Chertoff then split FEMA into two parts. The first part kept the name FEMA and had a director, not an undersecretary, who reported to Chertoff. It was, however, stripped of any preparedness functions, and dealt solely with response and recovery.

With the rest, Chertoff created the Directorate for Preparedness. The new directorate was tasked with facilitating grants for responder training, citizen awareness, public health, infrastructure, and cyber security.

In 2002-2003, Chertoff's wife, Meryl Justin, worked at FEMA as disaster response branch chief and facilitated the agency’s transition into DHS.

During her tenure at FEMA, Meryl briefed members of Congress and their staffs on response and recovery efforts following natural and technological disasters, including Hurricane Lili and the Shuttle Columbia disaster.

Meryl also served as director of New Jersey’s office in Washington under governors Donald T. DiFrancesco and James E. McGreevey**. As director, she represented the state’s interests before Congress, White House staff and federal executive agencies. After 9-11, Meryl was responsible for securing grants for New Jersey homeland security and transportation projects from Congress and federal agencies as part of the state’s relief and recovery efforts.

Gov. McGreevey** resigned in November 2004 after it was reported that his homeland security aide, an Israeli named Golan Cipel, planned to file a sexual harassment suit.

The son of an Israeli Mossad agent, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff - not Michael Brown - was in charge of managing the national response to Hurricane Katrina. As I said when he was made Secretary, "Don't you feel more secure already?"

Ask that question of the people of New Orleans.

Two new books in the US - Countdown to Terror and Countdown to Crisis - accuse an incompetent Central Intelligence Agency of failing to recognise the potentially catastrophic threat posed by Iran through what it alleges are close ties between Iran and the fugitive Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

Serialised in the conservative media and popularised on talk-shows, the books have arrived in the midst of a rightwing campaign to demonise Iran - and expose the CIA - at the same time as the Bush administration is exploring ways of funding and backing Iranian opposition groups.

In Countdown to Terror, Curt Weldon, a Pennsylvania republican congressman and vice-chairman of the House armed services committee, charges that Iran will carry out the next terror strike on the US, has a bomb that can kill more than 100,000 people, and is giving refuge to Mr bin Laden.

Mr Weldon’s information comes from “Ali”, said to be a former senior official during the Shah of Iran’s rule, whom he first met in Paris in April, last year.

Mr Weldon says he was driven to write his book after the CIA dismissed Ali as a fraud even though, Mr Weldon claims, many of his predictions came true.

Mr Weldon’s secondary target is George Tenet, the former CIA boss, and what he calls the old intelligence community elite. Mr Weldon accuses this elite of waging a propaganda war against George W. Bush in the run-up to the 2004 presidential election.

Mr Weldon strongly defends his old friend Porter Goss, who replaced Mr Tenet last year, and his efforts to purge the agency. He concludes that the US would be justified in launching a pre-emptive war against Iran. But since this is not feasible, Mr Weldon argues that the US should give financial support to Iranian groups preparing for regime change.

The ferocity of Mr Weldon’s accusations have driven Bill Murray, the former CIA station chief in Paris, to go public with his side of the story - that Ali was a fraudster well known to the agency. The CIA has responded by declassifying a letter to Mr Weldon, in which it says Ali was a fabricator who embellished press reports. “He has provided no information to date worthy of follow-up,” it said, adding that it spent hundreds of man hours evaluating his claims.

Mr Murray told the Financial Times that he had informed Mr Weldon that Ali was a known fabricator who wanted money. He said Ali was “totally dependent” on [Mossad asset - Alice] Manouchehr Ghorbanifar, an Iranian arms dealer discredited by the CIA for his role in the Iran-Contra scandal of the 1980s.

James Woolsey, a friend of Mr Weldon and former CIA director, praises the book as “a case study of an intelligence failure in the process of happening, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the United States.” Mr Goss has not commented on it in public.

The CIA has not commented either on Countdown To Crisis: the Coming Nuclear Showdown With Iran, by Kenneth Timmerman, a journalist and author with close ties to exiled Iranian opposition groups. A CIA spokesman said the agency was too busy to read it.

Mr Timmerman, quoting alleged high-level defectors from Iranian intelligence organisations, says Iran plotted the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US together with al-Qaeda, and is also protecting Mr bin Laden.

“Because of the arrogance and wilful blindness of our nation’s top intelligence officers, America’s leaders were misled about the threat from Iran until it was too late.”

The problem for us in the above story is that not only is Ghorbanifar a known liar, but he was the conduit between Israel, the US and Iran during the Iran-Contra affair, and is very close with Michael Ledeen, spearhead of the Nuke Iran gang as you will see below. His collaboration with Italian Intelligence, or SISMI links him to the Propaganda Due [P2] operation in Italy which has terrorized Europe for decades and is now collaborating with Ledeen and Co. again:

“In the 1980s, a number of books and articles fingered Michael Ledeen as a member of Italy’s fascist P2 “lodge,” a pseudo-Masonic power group founded by former blackshirt and SS liaison officer Licio Gelli. Gelli’s fascist cabal infiltrated, and largely controlled, SISMI. According to reports published in the 1980s, Gelli had created an organization within the organization, jocularly labeled “Super SISMI.”

But it wasn’t just books and articles that fingered Ledeen, in fact, “Ledeen is identified in the [Italian] court documents as an agent of SISMI,” and even the Tower Commission set up to investigate the Iran-Contra affair “concluded that the CIA should permanently terminate its relationship with Ledeen and his associate, Ghorbanifar.“

“His attachment to Israel, reflected in his JINSA connection, may have influenced his pursuit of the hostage deal with Iran (Israel favored such a transaction), and his former boss in the Pentagon, Noel Koch, asserts that while Ledeen was in Italy the CIA station chief there took him to be “an agent of influence of a foreign government.”

You see, Ledeen is a self-professed “Universal Fascist,” the title of one of his books:

“Ledeen, as he wrote in his book Machiavelli on Modern Leadership: Why Machiavelli’s Iron Rules Are As Timely and Important Today as Five Centuries Ago (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2000), is a believer in “total war” through “creative violence.” There is no such thing as peace between nations, he maintains; peace is just an interlude between wars.

Ledeen fits the profile of a “Synarchist,” or “Nazi/Communist,” as those concepts were discussed in World War II-era documents made available to EIR by military intelligence and other sources during the 1980s (see Jeffrey Steinberg, “Synarchism: The Fascist Roots of the Wolfowitz Cabal,” EIR, May 30, 2003). Particularly relevant to this characterization is Ledeen’s work with both “Red” and “Black” terrorists in Italy, and his support, along with Henry Kissinger, of the Propaganda Due (P-2) Freemasonic Lodge of former Nazi collaborator Licio Gelli, which directed the NATO-related “strategy of tension” [and eventual assassination] against former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro…”

An…important mentor to Ledeen was Renzo de Felice, an advocate of the Jacobin Revolution in France which led to the emergence of the first modern Fascist, Napoleon Bonaparte. De Felice did not hide his Fascism, as he wrote in The Illuminati and Revolutionary Mysticism, 1789-1900: “There is something in common between my Jacobins and a certain kind of Fascism…. Fascism wanted to achieve the transformation of society and the individual … [toward] a new phase in the history of civilization.”

After researching in Italy from 1966 to 1967, where he met scions of the Venetian oligarchy who are “magicians” in cultural warfare, Ledeen wrote: Universal Fascism (1972); “Italian Fascism and Youth,” Journal of Contemporary History, July 1969; “Fascist Social Policy,” in The Use and Abuse of Social Science, ed, Irving Louis Horowitz; and, among others, Fascism, An Informal Introduction to Its Theory and Practice, by Renzo de Felice, which includes an interview with Ledeen.

Ledeen preferred unbridled, Jacobin-style fascism, such as that of Gabrielle D’Annunzio in the early 1900s. In his 1972 Universal Fascism, Ledeen criticized Benito Mussolini as being too rigid: “He never had enough confidence in the Italian people to permit them a genuine participation in Fascism.”

Are you getting the picture? If this guy is saying there will be a nuclear attack on America, we’d better take it seriously. He’s hooked up with the blackest of international criminals.

I agree that Israel is working hard to sustain and increase American military presence in their neighborhood but the timing of this specific boat incident (January 6) with John McCain's win in New Hampshire (January 8) plus the way the CIA Operation Mockingbird media played it up strongly suggests to me that this was a US spook operation for their own purposes, recovering from the Bush-Cheney administration's policies and hated persona with a new Ike to like.

Just keeping US troops on mission tension requires little dramas like this periodically.

WEBSITE HACKED - The Education Forum

I have just got back from holiday to find the Forum hacked. It has now been sorted out. I had to smile at the large number of emails I received commenting on who they thought was responsible. I suspect it was none of those people.

My only comment on this was the last time this happened was when members of the Forum attacked the state of Israel. We traced this attack to a US based pro-Israeli website.

This comes on a couple of interesting anniversaries too...
