Well, you asked if it was bad, silly. So I said so.

Yeah, I got distracted or I would have agreed with your compelling reading of Lolita, really the classic study of the unreliable narrator (except maybe for Pale Fire, but that was a more formal exercise - with Humbert it's all the more disturbing because you can't tell what's happening most of the time).

Thanks.

I would say that in Lolita you can tell what's going on if you read it closely and with a lot of attention to the metaphorical value of names wrt degrees of dimness and elucidation, and all that similarly nuanced Nabokovian jazz.

Pale Fire, on the other hand is not a solvable puzzle, imo. Although I think I may be disrespecting the authori-TAI of Nabokov scholars on that point. Whatever. I love it anyway. Both of those books, in fact. I also like Pnin, but thought Ada was a drag and huffed off in search of other authors about twenty or thirty years ago without ever returning to anything VN, other than the three above-mentioned titles.

I should do something to correct my ig-nance.

Off-topic. Sorry.

Did I miss something in Pale Fire? The whole thing is a twisted roadmap to its own solution, no? (Has anyone else written a novel in the footnotes to a poem?)

The problem with VN is that he enjoys being an acrobat more than anything else. Has been described like having sex with someone who's really good, but whom you don't love.

Sorry offtopic.

Scouts honor!
It's a NASCAR promotion with little debbie snack cakes. I see a lot of posts here about pedophilia and the sanction of it in the world and this fits right in. A national promotion of the subject. The strangeness is high!

What you think about it is more telling than any 'strangeness.'

exactly how old is Debbie anyway?

I mean, it would depend on what state one was in (in U.S. anyhow) as to exactly what the legal definition of pedophilia is...
The medical definition, of course, being even more vague, in that it cannot apply anything resembling numbers...

Here I refrain from pointing out the extremely high number of oversexualized preteen girls I knew (still know?) in junior high...

Now I KNOW I've spent too much time in this forum when I'm at lunch today and see little kid with a T-shirt that reads:

What happens at Grandpa's house, STAYS at Grandpa's house.

I mean ... I know the joking sentiment implied, grandparents doting on their grandchildren and all, but considering the kind of debauchery that is implied originally by the Vegas slogan ...

That's why I had another margarita. Yeah, that's why.

You should have had one to celebrate your awesome podcast last night.

Mack has a great voice and gives a real steady Burl Ives /Christmas narrator gravity to the proceedings.

She was four in the image used for the trademark in 1960, so that would make her about fifty-two.

9. Little Debbie

“Little Debbie” is Debbie McKee, granddaughter of founder O.D. McKee. She’s parlayed her child modeling into a career with McKee Foods, where she’s currently on the Board of Directors.

Little Debbie now sponsors NASCAR, but on her terms.
“The McKee family wanted an association with a NASCAR team, but on terms that upheld its convictions. Typical sponsors want maximum exposure. That’s what they pay for. Little Debbie may seem to be everywhere, but come Saturday, you won’t find her at a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series track. The McKee family observes its Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. They are Seventh day Adventists and while their products may be sold on their Sabbath, the business of promoting sales stops for one day each week.”

Now, can we move on to something really disturbing?

Thanks, didn't know that.

I can never tell how old a youngish female is supposed to be, especially in an illustration. Between when a girl can walk and when she can drive, I can't tell them apart.
Which is why I only pick up girls in bars. Saves me the trouble of asking them how old they are and them lying to me and their mothers' yelling at me....

(of course, this approach only works if the Bar checks IDs, which is not always the case. I should probably stop now)

You're welcome. I'm in a relationship for the long haul, but I would never pick up a woman in a bar.

This thread got quiet. Are those crickets I hear?

I hear crickets all the time. Probably it is just a side effect.

[probably i have only done that a time or two, but it wasnt a serious comment anyhow]

the reason this thread got quiet is likely directly related to the seriousness of the issue at hand.

Maybe the quiet has something to do with the actual facts posted above? Yeah, I know it wasn't a serious comment -- I also loathe "emoticons" and sometimes enjoy the misunderstandings that arise from ambiguous comments. I hope those crickets are a side effect of live music at the bar!

When CONSPIRO-CHRISTIANS read something dirty (like fucking kids) into an innocent scene, it tells a lot about them.

Much of "illuminati mind control slave" narrative is nothing more than Christian porn: it combines sex blood hatred and POINTING THE FINGER AT OTHERS...

YOWZA!!!! what a rush!!!
