There's probably no God...

Postby tazmic » Mon Oct 27, 2008 12:56 pm

Professor Dawkins said: "Religion is accustomed to getting a free ride - automatic tax breaks, unearned respect and the right not to be offended, the right to brainwash children."

Bendy-buses with the slogan "There's probably no God" could soon be running on the streets of London.

A good comment on this:

The Atheism of Fools, or, There is Certainly No God: Now Start Worrying and Change Your Life

Image

[...]

In the midst of economic crisis, imperialist wars, catastrophic inequality, et caetera, the "brights" and "secularists" now see it fit to besmirch the fine tradition of godlessness by pimping for conformity, low-intensity hedonism and a truly unbearable lightness of being.

Faced with this capitulation to a smug petty-bourgeois ethos, any self-respecting atheist would rather keep company with the ravers, enthusiasts and fanatics. [...]

"God is dead." Simple, easy, memorable - and a hundred years old.

Even believers can believe it - he's certainly not very active, is he?

But... "There's probably no God."?!

That's weak.

I get the probability bit, but the simpering, half-brave, imagined-smartness - the belief that this slogan will educate people in some way - is offensive.

It's Dawkinsian...

They should try "There's probably no Allah" if they want to be controversial.

That bus won't get far.

According to a senior source inside the Kingdom of Heaven, God was actually thrilled to see the first of these bus signs appear, after having grown increasingly testy over the misuse of his name by religion. Prompted by his excitement over these signs, God decided to accept an invitation by Rolling Stone to sit down for an interview.

"After watching The 700 Club for the first time back in the 1970's," God said, "I almost stopped believing in myself!"

Surprisingly perhaps, God is no fan of religion. "You know, I only ever wanted friends—not worshippers," God said. "Religion pretty much just screws people up. More than probably anyone else, I suppose, I really want nothing to do with it."

When asked to comment on a whole litany of human disasters brought about by religion, including—but by no means limited to—the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Thirty Years' War, and the Wasilla Bible Church, God quipped, "You see why I'm such a big fan of Richard Dawkins? I like his books because he makes people think. If people thought more for themselves, and fewer people believed in religion's ridiculous caricature of me, humanity would be a helluva lot better off."

"If people really want to believe in something," God said toward the end of the interview, "I really wish they'd believe in themselves."

Imagine if John Lydon had been Richard Dawkins:

God save the queen, we mean it old chap,
There is probably no future in england’s dreaming;

probably no future for you, probably no future for me
probably no future, probably no future for you.

Now stop worrying and enjoy your lives.

Imagine if John Lennon had been Richard Dawkins:

Imagine the possibility that there is in fact no heaven:

It isn't, one feels, terribly difficult to do.

In all likelihood, no hell below us;

Above us, I suspect, only sky...

Marx and Engels as Oxford dons:

The proletarians probably have nothing to lose but their chains, metaphorically speaking. They have, so to speak, a world to win, if we might put it that way.

[Probably] Not forgetting Dolores Ibárruri Gómez:

What's that got to do with Lydon? Or Dawkins, for that matter?

It's was a Norman Tebbit speech, wasn't it? :D

MARX AND ENGELS: THE MUSICAL - (Short Course)

ENGELS: "I believe the family unit helps oppress the proletariat!"

MARX: "Pretend my daughter's yours, and pay for my flat."

ENGELS: "Okay."

Remember, anti religion is the new religion...and if there is a God,
just a cursory reading of the Biblical Job story shows that the Christian "God" sure isn't the kind of God you'd want anyways.

To me it's pretty clear there's been a Devil forever....but where's the big man? Or...is it all just good cop bad cop as some Gnostics believe? Now that's truly some scary shit.
