For the most part, the activity has been financed by labor unions, which have long been a potent force in Democratic electoral politics. But newly public documents filed with the Federal Election Commission this week show there has also been a hefty infusion of private money behind the efforts of Alliance for a New America, a group that is promoting the candidacy of Democrat John Edwards.

The filing shows that on Dec. 19, the Alliance group received $495,000 from Oak Spring Farms LLC, a corporate entity operating from a posh hotel on Central Park South in New York City. Land records and other documents trace the Oak Spring corporation to Manhattan trust attorney Alexander Forger. Forger holds a power of attorney for Rachel Lambert Mellon, who is 97 years old. Other records and published reports show Oak Spring Farms is controlled by Rachel Mellon.

Mellon, known in social circles as "Bunny," is the widow of Paul Mellon and daughter-in-law of industrialist Andrew Mellon. Paul Mellon also had a home in Virginia known as Oak Spring Farms.

The same Oak Springs group made a $250,000 contribution to the Edwards-affiliated One America 527 group in 2006. That contribution prompted a report in the New York Sun which raised questions about the way contributions could arrive anonymously.

Edwards has made campaign-finance purity a major component of his campaign, disavowing contributions from special interests and political action committees, and becoming the only major candidate to accept public matching money.

A message left at Forger's office has not been returned. He told The Sun in 2006, regarding the One America contribution: "I'm simply acting on behalf of somebody else."

Mellon's involvement in the decision to donate to the Alliance group is unknown. But published reports and federal election records show Forger has been a major supporter of Edwards' candidacy. Crain's Business Journal reported in February that Forger and "a group of prominent New York lawyers" hosted a fund-raiser for Edwards at Essex House -- the Central Park South address where his office is located.

I'm sick of America getting a bad rap from miserable "artists" like Boots Riley. He belongs in a capitalism-free cave in Tora Bora, spewing his "poetry" around an al Qaeda campfire. But I'm even sicker of Riley's cultural defenders in the eilte media. Sept. 11 brought home the lesson that vile ideas have bloody consequences - no matter how "daggone funky" they may sound to mush-headed music critics. We continue to ignore the intellectual enablers of anti-Americanism at our peril.

Funny you mention precognition.

A friend of mine had the same dream 3 days in a row before sept 11 2001.

It was just planes flying. Nothing else, just planes. He said it was unusual cos he never had a dream like that before in his life. Then 3 days in a row before sept 11. He thinks it makes perfect sense given the effect the day had on the western world's psyche, and I completely agree.

Deus Ex is a video game about government using terrorists as scapegoats for its own nefarious doings, and where the WTC just happened to be blown up by terrorists. Conceptually its worth a little more than a pair of 2s. But no its nowhere near as startling as that record cover. But then Gerling, a Sydney band, had a record out at the same time called "When Young Terrorists Chase the Sun."

I would have thought the WTC being blown up is a great symbol for people who don't like what capitalism has brought, the coup cover wasn't the first time that image had been used in that context. Fight Club for example.

Again fight club isn't quite on the coincidence level of the coup cover, but its only really the time seperation in that case.

I think that precognition idea is worth taking seriously.

Every time I heard the chorus of the MarkB/Blade song "You don't see the signs", in the months leading up to 911, I'd have this feeling that something was gonna happen and usher in a new nightmare of fascism. It was full on. I had no idea what tho, and it was the general unease that really bothered me. To the point where 911 made sense when it happened - at least as far as why that song was freaking me out.

So its worth taking seriously, but in this sense. Some big event was gonna happen and some people picked up on it. Specifically people who were a little more open to their right brain than say Fred Nile (Australia's Billy Graham - just called for a ban on topless women at Sydney's beaches) or Richard Dawkins.

Perhaps that explains it.

Of course he (or the cover designer could) have had some sort of inside knowledge type precognition - could have had a little message saying "put this on your cover."

The implications of that could be a bit heavy for some people tho.

Psychic predictions of 911

That website also reckons people like Cayce and Nostradamus didn't predict 911, but I have a book on Nostradamus (cheap tabloid type mostly, its ok tho) that dad gave me before 2001. It has something that could be interpreted as a pediction of 911.

Well, the two most impressive artistic or precog foreshadowings, other than "The Coup," are:

"The Lone Gunmen" pilot episode (which I find hard to buy as anything other than some spookster feeding a scenario to the writers), and

(on the spooky-magic-maybe synchronicity front)

the death of artist Michael Richards in his studio on the 92nd floor (impact zone) of the North Tower on the morning of Sept. 11,

given that his best-known works consisted of sculptures of himself in an aviator's suit being pierced by dozens of miniature airplanes.

I know two people who report having had detailed precognitive dreams about planes flying into buildings, one of whom I heard reporting it with my very own ears prior to September 11th. Although not as precognitive, just as a bad dream.

Can't we put the billionaires in reeducation camps? It's not that I'm a stinkin' billionaire-lover, but bloodshed has a habit of leading to more bloodshed, and while I admit the odds are poor, a well-designed and fully funded program with a nice, low reeducator-to-billionaire ratio and enough dunce caps and adorable kittens for everyone might yield a few formerly unethical credits to society. You never know.
