This theory - that white folk are uniquely persecuted, that to be white is now a crime - is stated overtly and subtly by the right on this side of the pond, too.

It's right up there with "We're not allowed to be Christian anymore." and "The left bows down to Islam." and "PC gone mad"

If not principles, then what? The answer in a word is deference. Stigmatized as racist, whites and American institutions have no moral authority over the problems they try to solve through race-related reform. They cannot address a problem like inner-city poverty by saying that government assistance will only follow a show of such timeless American principles as self-reliance, hard work, moral responsibility, sacrifice, and initiative—all now stigmatized as demonic principles that “blame the victims” and cruelly deny the helplessness imposed on them by a heritage of oppression. Instead their racial reform must replace principle with deference. It must show white American authority deferring to the nation’s racial tragedy out of remorse. And this remorse must be seen to supersede commitment to principles. In fact, any preoccupation with principles can only be read as a failure of remorse. “Caring,” “compassion,” “feeling,” and “empathy” must be seen to displace principles in public policy around race.

That's a difficult premise to reconcile with every single thing about the preparation for and response to Hurricane Katrina.

Beware self selffulfilling prophecies!

The thread is what is: one poster puts up weak but provocative claim, draws fire, fails to defend or even really articulate their supposed view. Thread drops off the page, to join thousands of very similar ones in the nether archives.

There is some function & utility in that, namely maintaining our information commons against bad data, via practice in dismantling & sharing evidence & arguments against RightThink myths.

Problem is, there is nothing to stop a poster putting up dozens of revolting texts, regardless of lack of effort at engagement or any admission of the abundant evidence contrary to their copynpasted opinions. To me, thats spamming, and thats where this 'system' falls down (if it does, depends of your expectations) - lack of effective feedback processes.



My RI side wonders what was being discussed just before the Cowpoke launched his one man crusade - think it was the coincidence (n'th time) of two '100s dead' war stories, and the US torture revelations.

Problem is, too, there is nothing to stop a poster deliberately or obtusely missing the point when his post is responded to as if it were meant seriously. E.g.:

Response to OP:

"This is essentially just a 21st century restatement of the doctrine of the White Man's Burden (i.e., that 'we in the West' have a duty to civilize the savages)."

Pointmissing response to that response:

"What do you mean by 'white men'(!!!)? I find it deeply unhelpful to define people in terms of the colour of their skin. Cos in fact no one is truly WHITE, you know!" [Etc., ad nauseam.]

And, next thing you know, the very same pointmissing poster has started a new thread, entitled (believe it or not): "White Guilt and the Western Past". Which appears to demand a rational response...

Take it seriously, though, and you'll quickly end up losing the will to live.

As was whoever (sorry: forgot, can't relocate, maybe the 'other' CC-contributed thread) who remarked on the invaluable and necessary taking Steele's faux-intellectual argument apart as a duty to this forum's stringent self-imposed responsibility to intellectual integrity. But too, how patheticly obvious Steele's dishonsty is. Notwthstanding CC's self-conscious pose of courageous defiance against group-think conformity.

Unbelievably lame. Hard to get past the first paragraph its so loaded with false and unsupported assumptions as to beg the question of its foregone conclusion. Not only foppish, but sophomoronic.
