Staged? At the MTV Video music awards? NO WAY.

MTV is so irrelevant now. My stepdaughter is in her teens now, and none of the teens right now care a rats ass about MTV. I mean, it's not even on their radar.

Which I think is great.

Everyone has sympathy for Swift, everyone loves Beyoncé (more), everyone thinks Kayne is (more of) a dick, all 3 will see album sales increase this week, and everyone is talking about MTV for the first time in a long time. Sure, it wasn't as obviously planned and Madonna kissing Britney Spears, but with a little bit of acting and canny planning, this is a publicity masterpiece.

Seconded.

As Guest of Guest points out, the whole things seems too good to be true, and too many people benefit. Everyone has sympathy for Swift, everyone loves Beyoncé (more), everyone thinks Kayne is (more of) a dick, and everyone is talking about MTV for the first time in a long time...

Photo Of The Day: Kanye Brings The Drama, But Was It Scripted?

The ending image of Beyonce and Taylor, both in red dresses, perfectly playing the roles of diva and grateful ingenue, seems too perfectly planned out to be completely genuine. And of course, because of what happened, MTV got a huge spike in viewership for the West Coast airing.

So, touching? Yes. But spontaneous? We highly doubt it...

"Those people", by which I hope you mean extraordinarily wealthy ego tripping image obssessed music celebrities.

1. The only attention MTV awards shows receive is when something goes wrong, or is made to go wrong.

2. West was already scheduled to be the first guest on the premier of Jay Leno's new 10 pm show, which debuted last night.

3. Jay Leno pulls in almost 18 million viewers in primetime debut

4. There are numerous, recent occasions of NBC and MTV partnering up on productions and cross-promoting on the web.

It's times like these when I ponder the sad fact that as much as I sometimes evidence disdain for these purveyors of popular musical culture, they are one hell of a lot more talented and clever than I.

If it was staged, was Swift in on it? And if she was, could it backfire for her after the outpouring of sympathy? Plus, do I give a fuck?

I think MTV LIHOP'd, security stood down, and West got Swift boated. But that's the extent of my giving a fuck.

I read speculation it was a conspiracy by Leno and his staff to get a ratings bump for his new show.

'Busy week for President Obama. I understand he's having Kanye West and Taylor Swift over to a Root Beer Summit at the White House.' - Leno

I think they floated that idea in the West wing but it was swiftly rejected.

Having just watched 20 minutes of the MTV Music Awards, I now support jellyfish in their efforts to conquer the planet.

I seems to me that West was just trying to insure himself some sweet, sweet Beyonce poontang after the show.

Actually, he wanted to be certain that you and I were talking about him afterward. It's called publicity, and he's a publicity whore.
The real issue is that there is extremely low likelihood that the speculations of the untrained, on a topic almost pathologically riddled by dynamic considerations and feedback effects, will offer anything new.
