The S From Hell

Postby Cosmic Cowbell » Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:43 pm

From todays Boing Boing:

Remember the Screen Gems stylized "S" logo that appeared at the end of such great TV shows as Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Monkees, and Partridge Family? My old friend Rodney Ascher was so traumatized by that graphic that he made a documentary/horror film about it, based on interviews with other "survivors" of The S From Hell.

I must've seen that logo a thousand times and never felt anything like what is described here. Not sure what the deal is, but it's fascinating.

it still looks like 69 to me. didn't see it a an SG at all. whatever, I was never terrorized by it. lol. This guy is involved with the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in NY... It's comedy, but not comedy I was in the mood for. I've got mixed feelings about this kinda thing because how many people are not going to get the joke and think there's really something "evil" about it? Some. I hate to see such fools get another bit of disinfo to latch onto. In 50 years is there going to have to be a snopes article refuting this?

I'm not sure about this either, although I believe that certain imagery/sounds may have this kind of effect on a five or 6 year old, for whatever reason. It's billed as "True" and a Sundance selection, so again, not sure what to make of it. I doubt though, if true, that anyone would take seriously the evil of the Screen Gems logo......unless SG really stood for, "Satan's (insert favorite G word here)"

Ahhh..#8 - 'Mary Hart Syndrome'

She may not be one of those people with a voice only dogs can hear ... but she is one of those people with a voice that can induce a seizure.

In 1991, a woman who remains unidentified fell into seizures at the mere sound of Mary Hart's voice. Mary Hart, who co-hosts Entertainment Tonight, was clearly given the gift of gab; but for some people, this is not the kind of gab they want to have any part of. Perhaps a more famous instance of someone suffering from MHS is Cosmo Kramer, whose first-hand account explained, "Suddenly I got dizzy and the next thing you know I hit my head on the coffee table." If only there had been a coffee table book about coffee tables to soften his fall.

It has long been explained that television can be hazardous to your health—but this would be the first documented case of "sound induced" epileptic fits from television. Instead of TV, we suggest reading a good book. Unless Seinfeld is on. Then all bets are off.

http://www.thesfromhell.com/LOGOPHOBICS.html

I had never heard of kids being petrified of the screen gems logo until now. Obviously the film has now contaminated by brain and altered my perception, but I think that the emotional effect of viewing the screen gems logo now derives partly from the fact that it has a hollow, distant sound which resonates with the feeling of recalling a childhood spent largely in front of a tv in a darkened room in a light trance, which would have been likely the most common state of mind I was in when I was exposed to the screen gems logo as a kid. Honestly, at the time I don't think I consciously noticed these logos which was probably due to sensory habituation, although they were indelibly etched into my brain. They were not a source of fear, at least that I recall.

I was, however, petrified of a household cleaner commercial. I think it was pinesol, although I've never been able to locate a version of it to view again. I would see it when my mother would watch her soap operas during the day, so I know I had to have been younger than school age, maybe 3 or 4. It might be one of my earliest memories. A housewife uses this household cleaner and a green cloud of gas meant to represent the smell of the cleaner creeps around the house like the angel of death in the Ten Commandments, curling and swirling around the furniture and a baby's crib. I don't recall being able to articulate to my mother that this commercial terrified me.

No nightmares or other visible ill effects from me, only as a little boy when I saw the logo I felt that there was always something very serious behind all the fun and hijinks I had just watched.

Seconded. Surely this should be in the Lounge, if anywhere?

I thought about it, but was curious if childhood fears, particularly wrt imagery, sound and media might spark an interesting conversation.

But thanks for looking out for the forum Mac.....the Daleks would be proud....

I give it five weeks.

Yet another case of flooding out legitimate issues (hidden, sometimes sinister messages found in media symbologies) with satirical nonsense that's a lot less funny than it thinks. Aiming for cheap laughs from a demographic who are too sophisticated to ever consider "conspiracy theory," except with a sneer. In this case, probably not as intentional as the disgusting marketing for the "Jejune Institute."

Then again, maybe it's just covert Screen Gems marketing. They are still around, you know.

You could have had that conversation in the Lounge, could you not? (Rhetorical q.)

But thanks for looking out for the forum Mac.....

You're welcome. Just because the board's currently a bit slow is no reason to welcome it being filled up with timewasting crap.
