UFO sceptic has close encounter with 'alien' on bowling green

Image
Mothership? A drawing by Roy Shaw of the UFO he saw in Exmouth, Devon. He said it was about 100ft long, with flashing lights. He was at a loss to explain it

A UFO sceptic was left terrified and running away so quickly he twisted his ankle, after seeing a mysterious craft and an otherworldly figure in Exmouth’s aptly-named Phear Park.

Retired engineer Roy Shaw was taking a night-time stroll with his dog, Sydney, when the close encounter happened.

He said: ‘The object was round, about 30ft in diameter and 100ft long, with blue and red flashing lights on its perimeter.

‘It appeared to land at the top end of the park by the bowling green. My dog started to growl when what I can only describe as a white shape came towards us.

However, Mr Shaw said he remained a sceptic and was at a loss to explain Saturday’s incident

UFO seen in Phear Park, Exmouth

EXMOUTH man Roy Shaw has exclusively spoken about the moment he came face-to-face with what UFO experts are calling a Close Encounter of the Third Kind, writes Becca Gliddon.

UFO sceptic Mr Shaw, of Withycombe Village Road, is the latest resident to report seeing strange coloured lights - and says he spotted what he can only describe as a spaceship landing in Phear Park. The retired engineer and his dog ran for home when a white 'shimmering' shape began walking towards them

ROY Shaw does not believe in aliens, ghosts, flying saucers or anything he cannot physically touch or explain.

But recently Mr Shaw, a retired engineer, saw something unusual in Phear Park that frightened him so much, it caused him to run home so fast he twisted his ankle in the process, writes Becca Gliddon.

Mr Shaw believes he saw a UFO land in Phear Park and witnessed a 'white shape' come towards him.

The Withycombe Raleigh resident calls the experience 'weird' and is at a loss to explain what he saw.

An Exmouth UFO boffin believes Mr Shaw had a brush with alien life, and calls the 'rare' event a Close Encounter of the Third Kind.

Mr Shaw is worried people will think he is a crank after reading his account of the strange occurrence.

But he is keen to point out that, far from believing in little green men, he remains a sceptic and still cannot give an explanation of what he saw that night.

Mr Shaw said: "The object was round in shape and about 30-feet in diameter and 100-foot long, with blue and red flashing lights on its perimeter, and it appeared to land at the top end of the park by the bowling green.

"My dog started to growl when, what I can only describe as a white shape, came towards us.

"It was about four-feet high and seemed to be translucent, and moved very slowly towards us.

"I was transfixed because it made a droning noise which sounded like 'my my,' over and over again, which I could not understand.

"I didn't know where the sound was coming from but it was coming straight towards me.

"I immediately ran back down through the park."

Mr Shaw said the UFO appeared to hover over the hedge of the bowling green, then flew horizontally from left to right, before immediately shooting off at high speed, back to the left at a 45-degree angle.

He said the UFO appeared from nowhere. He did not see it fly overhead, or land.

Mr Shaw said his normally-placid border collie dog, Sydney, ran away from the object after baring his teeth at the approaching figure.

"I twisted my ankle when I ran like hell," said Mr Shaw. "My dog Syd kept whimpering and kept looking out of the bedroom window towards the park until at least two in the morning.

"I had problems sleeping because I just kept going over in my mind what I had seen.

"I still can't believe what I saw and I am still in a state of shock.

"Syd doesn't like going back up there now. Something put him off.

"Everybody thinks you are crank when you report something like this.

"I am an engineer. I like to touch and feel things. If I can touch it, it exists, but there's no way I can explain this."

Exmouth UFO expert Nigel Wright said: "This is a close encounter of the third kind.

"The definition of a third kind is having encountered an occupant of a UFO in close proximity to the craft itself.

"This is a really important sighting."

I'm impressed that, unlike Exmouth's "UFO expert," Shaw's making no claim to know what happened to him.

"I didn't know where the sound was coming from but it was coming straight towards me.

and interestingly:

He said the UFO appeared from nowhere. He did not see it fly overhead, or land.

Little green men... My grandfather once saw a leprechaun (or something), and he said it just vanished while he was looking at it.

This incident has much to recommend itself for: a seeming reputable witness, able to sketch convincingly what he saw; the vaguely threatening, vaguely humanoid translucent shape of the "entity"; the twisted ankle and frightened dog; the horrifyingly specific audible "my my" which I've been saying over and over again to my self since I read this.

Isn't there a famous sketch of an alien encounter from the fifties or sixties that approximates the shape of this apparition? Does anyone know of a comprehensive catalogue of such sketches on the web?

Maybe this:

From here. But the only Valenciennes, France, September 10, 1954 sighting described here doesn't mention any occupants nor does it mention a landing.

This has the sighting that corresponds with the drawing. But the description of the entities doesn't match this latest case.

This would mean white amorphous blobs are more highly evolved then humans? If this thing has achieved space flight and it doesn't even have appendages, that's quite an accomplishment.

I'm reminded, slightly, of the Flatwoods monster incident. Just because of this happening on a hill, the witness not seeing the object land (tho with Flatwoods there was no craft), a scary semi-monstrous form coming towards the witness who flees down the hill. Instead of the strange odor like in the Flatwoods case you have a strange not uncommon droning sound but this time describes as the weird MY MY mantra.

Wow!

Of course, in most sightings cases I try to conceive of how the incident could've been staged as a psyop.

In this case, some of the details make me think that might be more likely than "true ufo phenom"...

- not seeing the object arrive and only seeing it depart.
- the indistinctness of the associated entity.

But I'm curious about possible other recent reports in the area:

"is the latest resident to report seeing strange coloured lights"

... assuming they weren't just intending that statement as in "latest in the world".

And I too am always enthused when a witness seems reputable and doesn't jump to conclusions.

I'm curious also about the lighting and layout of this Phear Park.

Dog walking man reveals his alien encounter
Friday, February 12, 2010 17:41 IST

London: Roy Shaw, a retired engineer, claims to have seen a 100ft spaceship as he walked his dog.

Shaw, 58, of Exmouth, Devon, said he first encountered the circular craft, with blue and red lights flashing round it, hovering over a park at 10pm.

Thereafter, it landed next to a bowling green, and a spooky white shape emerged and began gliding towards him and his dog Sydney.

Shaw was so scared that he fled for home with his border collie, twisting his ankle in the run.

"Sydney growled as this shape began to come towards us and we both legged it. I can't believe what I saw," the Sun quoted him, as saying.

According to Shaw, who later sketched the spaceship, the spaceship later shot off at a 45-degree angle. He also claimed that another dog walker had seen it.

"This is a really important sighting," Devon-based UFO expert Nigel Wright said.

Dog Walker Witnesses UNITE!

So, this article almost implies he saw it "hovering" in the sky "over a park" ... before it supposedly landed and disgorged the occupant.

Walkies terror of dog man
Published: 12 Feb 2010

A RETIRED engineer told yesterday how he was confronted by a 100ft spaceship as he walked his dog.

Roy Shaw said he first saw the circular craft, with blue and red lights flashing round it, hovering over a park at 10pm.

Then it landed beside a bowling green and a spooky white shape emerged - and began gliding towards him and his border collie Sydney.

Roy, 58, was so terrified he fled for home with his dog, twisting his ankle in his haste.

Hover bovver ... Roy's sketch

The UFO sceptic, of Exmouth, Devon, said: "Sydney growled as this shape began to come towards us and we both legged it. I can't believe what I saw."

Roy, who later sketched the spaceship, said it shot off at a 45° angle. He also revealed another dog walker told him he had seen it.

Devon-based UFO expert Nigel Wright said: "This is a really important sighting."

What ghastly spelling...

Cash-strapped Ministry of Defence chiefs secretly axed the department that investigated UFOs last month.

But now The Sun has picked up the baton as strange space sightings are close to an all time high.

American Dr Christopher McKay — a NASA extra-terrestrial investigator — said: "It is important to keep a record of UFOs.

"I think it is only natural as a human to wander whether there is life outside of Earth.

Unexplained

"The public are really interested in the unexplained sightings so it is worthwhile to log them."

Dr McKay — part of NASA's Space Science Division since 1982 — has spent his career looking for extra-terrestrial life.

The planetary scientist was the co-leader of the Mars Phoenix Lander mission in 2008.
