The latest cover of Time Magazine.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/ ... ostpopular

Our cover image this week is powerful, shocking and disturbing. It is a portrait of Aisha, a shy 18-year-old Afghan woman who was sentenced by a Taliban commander to have her nose and ears cut off for fleeing her abusive in-laws. Aisha posed for the picture and says she wants the world to see the effect a Taliban resurgence would have on the women of Afghanistan, many of whom have flourished in the past few years. Her picture is accompanied by a powerful story by our own Aryn Baker on how Afghan women have embraced the freedoms that have come from the defeat of the Taliban — and how they fear a Taliban revival.

I thought long and hard about whether to put this image on the cover of TIME. First, I wanted to make sure of Aisha's safety and that she understood what it would mean to be on the cover. She knows that she will become a symbol of the price Afghan women have had to pay for the repressive ideology of the Taliban. We also confirmed that she is in a secret location protected by armed guards and sponsored by the NGO Women for Afghan Women. Aisha will head to the U.S. for reconstructive surgery sponsored by the Grossman Burn Foundation, a humanitarian organization in California. We are supporting that effort.

I'm acutely aware that this image will be seen by children, who will undoubtedly find it distressing. We have consulted with a number of child psychologists about its potential impact. Some think children are so used to seeing violence in the media that the image will have little effect, but others believe that children will find it very scary and distressing — that they will see it, as Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, said, as "a symbol of bad things that can happen to people." I showed it to my two young sons, 9 and 12, who both immediately felt sorry for Aisha and asked why anyone would have done such harm to her. I apologize to readers who find the image too strong, and I invite you to comment on the image's impact.

But bad things do happen to people, and it is part of our job to confront and explain them. In the end, I felt that the image is a window into the reality of what is happening — and what can happen — in a war that affects and involves all of us. I would rather confront readers with the Taliban's treatment of women than ignore it. I would rather people know that reality as they make up their minds about what the U.S. and its allies should do in Afghanistan.

The much publicized release of classified documents by WikiLeaks has already ratcheted up the debate about the war. Our story and the haunting cover image by the distinguished South African photographer Jodi Bieber are meant to contribute to that debate. We do not run this story or show this image either in support of the U.S. war effort or in opposition to it. We do it to illuminate what is actually happening on the ground. As lawmakers and citizens begin to sort through the information about the war and make up their minds, our job is to provide context and perspective on one of the most difficult foreign policy issues of our time. What you see in these pictures and our story is something that you cannot find in those 91,000 documents: a combination of emotional truth and insight into the way life is lived in that difficult land and the consequences of the important decisions that lie ahead.

of course it's happening RIGHT FUCKING NOW (and has been since way before we invaded, of course back then no one in power gave a damn) and we're not doing jack shit about it. If these worthless two faced war loving jackasses gave a damn they guard schools and the like 24x7 but NO. God I hate Time magazine.

Fear not. On another outlet of proud journalistic integrity, we have this heartrending story about a soldier and his dog, an Afghan dog, you see. You gotta admit, it ain't all bad over there. :jumping:

Heroic Afghan Dog Reunited with U.S. Soldier

When Georgia National Guardsman Chris Duke was serving in Afghanistan, he made friends with the locals - stray dogs Sasha, Target and Rufus.

"A lot of us used the three of them as an escape when you're homesick," Duke said.

But, as CBS News national correspondent Jeff Glor reports, the dogs did much more than keep him company.

"I firmly believe I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for him," Duke said.

On a February night, a suicide bomber tried to get into Duke's barracks. But the dogs began barking and biting the intruder. The attacker blew himself up before he could kill 50 soldiers inside.

Sasha was severely injured and had to be put down. But Rufus and Target were both nursed back to health. Duke returned home a month later - the dogs had to stay behind.

As another soldier kept an eye on the dogs, Duke wrote a letter to a veterans assistance group called "Hope for the Warriors." In the letter, Duke requested bringing the dogs home to him.

"This was going to mean a lot to him," said Robin Kelleher, President of Hope for the Warriors. "So whatever we needed to do to get this wish done we were going to do that."

Other organizations heard about the story, too. A Facebook page went up, and raised $21,000 in less than 3 months - enough for the dogs to leave Afghanistan.

This week, Rufus and Target finally arrived in the U.S. Today, in Atlanta, they were reunited for the first time with Duke and his wife.

Target will live in Arizona with another soldier, while Rufus will stay with the Dukes.

"To think that I'm going to have him for the rest of my life - it's exciting," Duke said.

Exciting because he knows he wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the dogs. Now they wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Duke.

But me nah go let dem conquer de I

Miss Liberty turn inna Jezzabelle
All de dreams you go sell, de whole dem turn inna hell
Her bed of roses are filled with thorns
Her righteous robes are tattered and torn

If she had only stood for love
That would have been enough
She wouldn't have to hide her shame
If she had only stood for love
That would have been enough
But now she's burnt us all with her flames

Amerimacka
Oh what a beautiful life
Amerimacka
Is like licking honey off a knife

Amerimacka
Oh what a beautiful sight
Amerimacka
Oh what a beautiful life

The land of the free built on slavery
Our consciousness in captivity
The promise land is the liar's den
Your culture of greed has got to end

Now we're laying in the mud
Looking up above
Tear water just ah drop from the sky
They try to keep us in the mud
Separating us from love
But me nah go let dem conquer de I

Amerimacka
Oh what a beautiful life
Amerimacka
Is like licking honey off a knife

Amerimacka
Oh what a beautiful sight
Amerimacka
Oh what a beautiful life
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Here's a good one that just came out. Jesus Christ. Something is up.

July is deadliest month for US forces in Afghanistan

Six US soldiers were killed in bombing and insurgent attacks in Afghanistan's volatile south, making July the deadliest month of the war for American forces, officers said Friday.
US soldiers patrol in the Dand district of Kandahar Province on July 26. Six US soldiers were killed in bombing and insurgent attacks in Afghanistan's volatile south, making July the deadliest month of the war for American forces, officers said Friday.

Three were killed on Thursday and three more on Friday, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said. A US defense official in Washington, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the six soldiers were Americans.

The casualties brought the death toll for US soldiers in July to 66, an all-time high that surpassed the record toll of 60 for the previous month, according to the icasualties.org website.

US and NATO commanders have warned that an influx of foreign troops and a push against insurgents in the south would trigger a spike in casualties.

The mounting death toll for foreign troops has piled political pressure on the United States and its allies amid growing public doubts about the war, now in its ninth year.

Five of the six soldiers died in attacks using homemade bombs, or improvised explosive devices, ISAF said.

Homemade bombs, cheap and easy to make and plant, are the Taliban's main weapon in the war in Afghanistan.

NATO and the United States have close to 150,000 troops in the country, with 30,000 deployed to the southern Taliban heartland in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

will these invaders never learn? It is never going to be possible for the US to kill it's way to turning Afghanistan into 1950's America, or anything remotely similar. There is no point to being there, except that US "leaders" are too afraid of their dicks shrinking if they pull out. So they'd rather let other people's children get theirs blown off. Pathetic.

Anti-US riot: Embassy vehicles torched in Afghan capital:
US embassy vehicles torched in Afghan capital
Rioting erupted in Kabul Friday when scores of Afghan men set fire to two US embassy vehicles after one collided with a civilian car killing a number of occupants, officials and witnesses said.

Television pictures showed the vehicles in flames and young Afghan men throwing stones at them.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said it had despatched a quick reaction force to the area, outside the American embassy and near US and Afghan army bases in the centre of the city.

An ISAF official said the vehicles involved belonged to the US embassy.

"We don't know yet how many people were killed in the accident," interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashery said.

Witnesses said four passengers of the civilian car died when it was hit by one of two armoured vehicles moving in convoy.

Police fired shots in the air to quell the violence, an AFP reporter witnessed.

Afghan security forces cordoned off the area, closing the road to Kabul's international airport, he said.

Local resident Saleh Ahmed said the accident happened when the civilian vehicle attempted to drive onto the main road from a side street and was hit by one of the two armoured vehicles.

"The civilian vehicle was trying to get into the main road when the two foreign vehicles hit it and killed all four occupants," he said. "People gathered around the crash site to see what had happened, got angry and started attacking the foreigners."

The AFP reporter on the scene said police helped the foreigners leave as the riot continued for about an hour before people started to disperse.

Young Afghan men threw stones and shouted "death to foreigners" and "death to Karzai," referring to President Hamid Karzai, he said.

A similar traffic incident led to massive riots that shook the capital in May 2006, leaving at least 14 people dead.

Deployments by the United States and NATO are nearing their peak of 150,000, concentrated in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, where a nearly nine-year Taliban insurgency is at its most intense.

A motorcycle bomb targeting a candidate in upcoming parliamentary elections killed a woman and a child in the southern city of Kandahar on Friday, police said.

The explosives-laden motorcycle was parked in a city centre alley used by the candidate, and detonated minutes after he passed by, provincial deputy police chief Fazel Ahmad Shairzad told AFP.

He blamed the attack on "enemies of Afghanistan," a term often used to refer to the Taliban.

The parliamentary election was originally scheduled for May but postponed until September 18.

Candidates appear to be the latest targets of the Taliban, who have stepped up a campaign of roadside bombs, suicide attacks and assassinations in recent months.

Candidate Sayedullah Sayed died after a mosque in the southeastern province of Khost was bombed last Friday as he was campaigning, injuring 20 people.

Also in the south of the country, NATO said that three foreign soldiers had been killed in two separate Taliban-style bomb attacks on Thursday. An ISAF spokeswoman confirmed all three were American.

A total of 408 foreign troops have died in the Afghan war so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on that kept by the icasualties.org website.

The toll for July is 86, compared with 102 in June, the worst month for foreign military casualties since the end of 2001.

Warning:

Shaming’ in-laws costs 19 year old her nose, ears

Despite the purpose behind the Times article, I don't think any of these things should be devalued, or the people they happen to. Abuse and mutilation of women knows no specific race, no specific country, no specific religious or political beliefs. It comes in many fashions, some are just more obvious than others.

Sorry, just had to add this in here.

Sorry, that was me as the lesser-known commedia dell'artefigure Briochinotto, 'the idiot at the magazine stand.' I should have greened it.

I agree that the cover and the message is SO deeply fucked-up on SO many levels that it's crazy-making.

Signifier-signified... we have to keep killing and mutilating, or women will be killed and mutilated, and Time has stooped to a desperate horror-of-Islam argument with their shock cover.

I agree it shows great desperation on their part.

Time has a long history of being completely owned by the neoconish jackals. I was quite possibly more disgusted by this particular cover not long ago:

Next week's headline: "WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LEAVE THE CONGO."

After that: "WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LEAVE SERBIA."

After that: "WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LEAVE CAMBODIA."

After that: "WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LEAVE EAST ST. LOUIS."

As someone who values the whole truth, and not the official truth, liberal truth or "truther" truth...I believe it valuable to be aware of both the evil the Taliban *and* America and its allies have been involved in. I don't think fellow para-political/truther folks as myself are fully aware of the unimaginable evil the Taliban or say death squads and militias in Africa are involved in. However, this somehow becomes the focal point in many people's minds with nary a thought in the public of all the evil the US has done.

The reason this image is so shocking, is the high importance of female beauty that America worships(think they'd put a mutilated darker skinned African woman on the cover? hell no)

However, why not put the faces or bodies of people mutilated or blown apart by US and NATO bombs? Or Obama's predator missiles? I'd give Time thumbs up for that. Shit they shoulda done that during the Israeli blitz on Lebanon or Gaza.

So yeah, I would have to agree THIS IS PROPAGANDA, meant to play the part of "hey, remember why were fighting these wars and why Obama is right".

As Brzezinski however admits as of late, this whole thing is about geostrategy above all.
