Shots Fired at University of Texas Austin, Cops Hunt Possible Second Gunman
Eyewitness: Gunman Was Wearing Ski Mask and Carrying Assault Rifle.

Sept. 28, 2010

A gunman wearing a ski mask and brandishing a rifle entered a library at the University of Texas Austin today and fired several shots before taking his own life, university officials said.

Police are still looking for a possible second gunman, according to officials, and the campus remains on lockdown.

An email and text alert was sent to students and faculty around 8 a.m. Central Time, just as the day's first classes were beginning, warning that a "armed subject was reported last seen at PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY" and telling students to remain in place.

Shooting Incident at UT Austin

Postby Luposapien » Tue Sep 28, 2010 10:43 am

Hey All,

Not much to report on yet (and I probably won't have much time to give updates), but there is a shooting event developing here in Austin at UT.

So far, this is about as much as I've seen about it:

Police on scene of shooting on UT campus

Tuesday, September 28, 2010, 08:32 AM

A gunman who fired several shots in the Perry-Casteneda Library on the UT campus is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and are looking for a possible second suspect, officials say.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed that the shooter is dead, but UT continues to be locked down, and people are urged to stay out of the area.

Officials say it appears there are no other injuries. UT spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said witnesses had reported that the man was armed with automatic weapon.

“The shooter is dead on the sixth floor of Perry-Castaneda Library, said Don Hale, a UT spokesman. “No identification. Apparently took his own life.”

“We don’t have any report of anybody getting shot at this point,” Hale said.

“It’s not clear yet” if there is a second suspect, Hale said shortly after 9 a.m., adding that the university’s advice to stay indoors and keep doors locked remains in force.

Police officials raised the possibility of a second gunman because they had received different descriptions of the gunman by witnesses.

It was unclear how many shots were fired, but witnesses described eight to 10 shots in short bursts.

Hale said university officials alerted students, faculty members and staff members by text message, outdoor loudspeakers and an online posting to stay indoors.

“That seems to be working pretty well,” Hale said of that advice.

Martin Luther King Jr. from Red River Street to University Avenue is closed at this time.

Alicia Dietrich, public affairs assistant with the Harry Ransom Center, which is down the street from the library, said she heard the shots as she was parking her bike.

“I didn’t even know for sure that it was gunshots,” Dietrich said at 8:47 a.m. “The sirens went off about five to 10 minutes ago. The building has been locked down and I don’t think they’re letting anybody in or out.”

Kevin Olsen, a graduate student at the University of Texas, said he was walking by the Dobie dorm about 8:15 a.m. when he heard about eight to 10 shots in short bursts. He said other people walking to class also heard shots and were looking around “kind of in awe.”

A UT facilities worker told KLBJ-AM that he heard at least 10 gunshots but saw nobody get hit.
If you can't laugh at yourself, then everyone else will.

AUSTIN, Texas - Gunshots have been fired on the University of Texas campus in Austin after an initial report of someone bringing a gun to one of the libraries. The man who brought the gun has apparently killed himself.

A spokeswoman for UT police said there were reports of someone bringing a gun to the Perry-Castañeda Library, which is the main library in the intersection of East 21st Street and Speedway.

KTBC reporter Jenni Lee said Tuesday morning the man with the gun shot himself to death and the Red McCombs School of Business was placed on lock down. UT police found a boy on the 6th floor of the library.

Students, especially in the nearby Jester Center dormitory, were recommended to stay in place and lock their doors, according to a message posted on the UT website.

Another KTBC report indicated the loud speaker system was used to alert students during the

I work for UT, but I'm in a building that's located off the main campus, so I'm not affected by the lock-down, and a bit insulated from what I'm sure is a very uneasy situation on campus. I know a lot of folks on campus too. So far not word on any injuries or deaths, other than the suspected shooter, so hoping it stays that way.

Just overheard a colleague say that a second shooter has been confirmed, but I can't really confirm that.

That was a joke... But at least now none of us will be surprised when a panoply of prescription medications come up.

At least one report I've seen said that he wasn't carrying any ID. Could be a while before anyone knows much about who he is.

Anyway, a second shooter is most definitely not yet confirmed.

But at least now none of will be surprised when a panoply of prescription medications come up.

Why would we be surprised that someone capable of this might have a mental health background that would include prescription meds?
We could also speculate on abuse, learning difficulties, social problems, etc.
Scapegoating the meds seems to let the individuals actions off the hook.
