I remember may of 2009, Obama was laughing and yucking it up at an elite dinner knowing full well one day prior US warplanes had killed 147 Afghan civilians. But thats ok...its the "right" war.
As is the endless strikes on Pakistan. Gotta get "al Qaeda"!

Wow. This really pisses me the hell off today. Slaughtering women in the name of .... what? Hey, we can't stop slaughtering women in foreign countries with billion-dollar bombs, so we're gonna have to cut the budget ELSEWHERE.

Such fucking bullshit about "spending" and the "deficit". Just quit killing people around the world and POOF! Probably balance that budget tomorrow.

But no. It's our "way of life", massacring people around the globe. This thing runs on blood and bones and human souls.

Officials: NATO Air Strike Killed Civilians in Afghanistan
Accidentally Bombed Family of Six in Their Home

The spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan has reported that NATO troops killed six civilians yesterday, including four children, in a mistaken air strike against their home.

NATO termed the killings “deeply regrettable” but insisted that they were firing on fleeing insurgents at the time. The missile instead hit a home, killing the family of six. The killings sparked anger amongst locals.

The latest deaths come as NATO is probing last week’s offensive in the nearby Kunar Province, which provincial officials there say killed as many as 64 innocent civilians. NATO denied the allegations initially, but has promised further investigation.

Civilian deaths caused by NATO has actually dropped considerably near the end of Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s tenure leading the occupation forces, apparently the result of more restrictive rules of engagement. Since his replacement with Gen. David Petraeus, the toll has risen precipitously, as have the number of strikes in populated areas.

NATO this, NATO that. The great advantage about NATO is that you don't have to fault your own country when you are writing a story about your country's murder of innocents. Likewise, the great thing about the US government is that you don't have to fault rich fascists.

"If American workers are being denied their right to organize when I'm in the White House, I will put on a comfortable pair of shoes and I will walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States."

Last week President Obama had a closed-door meeting with a dozen barons of the modern tech age. Among those he attempted to wine and dine guests were Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Erick Schmidt, and Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs. He also plied them with pro-businesses mantras, though he practices policies that hurt them.

While the press was not allowed to cover the event, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney released an e-mail about the dinner. Apparently Obama chose these 12 titans of technology because "American companies like these have been leading by investing in the creativity and ingenuity of the American people, creating cutting-edge new technologies and promoting new ways to communicate."

Indeed: If anyone knows how to lead the country by pushing it to nearly-boundless creative and communicative abilities technologically, these guests – who also included Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter, and Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle -- might know a thing or two about it. According to Carney, during the two and a half hour meal, the president discussed "his proposals to invest in research and development and expand incentives for companies to grow and hire, along with his goal of doubling exports over five years to support millions of American jobs."

Obama praises Jeb Bush on education reform

By Nia-Malika Henderson and Peter Wallsten
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, March 4, 2011; 9:10 PM

MIAMI - In his first year as Florida governor, Jeb Bush was vilified by Democrats as a "radical" for an education agenda they argued would undermine public schools. So it was a striking moment when, 12 years later, a Democratic president came here Friday to hail the Republican as a "champion of education reform."

It was even more striking to consider that President Obama, introduced by Bush for a speech at a Miami high school, was teaming up with the younger brother of the man he replaced in the White House - a predecessor he has been quick to blame for many of America's troubles. And even more intriguing to think that, if only his last name were not Bush, Jeb would probably be the Republican Party's best hope of beating Obama next year.

Yet there they were, warmly shaking hands, exchanging laughs and declaring themselves brothers in arms when it comes to fixing the country's schools.

"I've gotten to know Jeb because his family exemplifies public service," Obama said, declaring he was "grateful to him for the work that he's doing."

...

Crediting the school's principal and noting that its graduation rate had gone from 36 percent to 63 percent, Obama declared that Miami Central had "put those days behind you. . . . You are proving the naysayers wrong - you are proving that progress is possible."

The naysayers, however, came mostly from Obama's own party.

One of them was Rep. Frederica S. Wilson, whose district includes Miami. As a state legislator she battled Bush's education plans. She rode with the president aboard Air Force One and was described by a pool reporter to have "bowed her head with great drama and shook it, as if in despair," over Obama teaming up with Bush.

Obama creates indefinite detention system for prisoners at Guantanamo Bay

By Peter Finn and Anne E. Kornblut
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, March 7, 2011; 9:44 PM

President Obama signed an executive order Monday that will create a formal system of indefinite detention for those held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who continue to pose a significant threat to national security. The administration also said it will start new military commission trials for detainees there.

The announcements, coming more than two years after Obama vowed in another executive order to close the detention center, all but cements Guantanamo Bay's continuing role in U.S. counterterrorism policy.

Glenn Greenwald wrote:In other words, Obama -- for reasons having nothing to do with Congress -- worked from the start to preserve the crux of the Bush/Cheney detention regime. Even with these new added levels of detention review (all inside the Executive Branch), this new Executive Order is little more than a by-product of that core commitment, and those blaming it on Congress either have little idea what they're talking about or are simply fabricating excuses in order to justify yet another instance where Obama dutifully "bolsters" the Bush War on Terror template. Indefinite detention and military commissions are continuing because Obama worked from the start for that goal -- not because Congress forced him to do so.

As as happened over and over, while progressives and civil libertarians are furious about the new Order, former Bush officials and right-wing Warriors are ecstatic. The anti-Muslim McCarthyite Rep. Peter King (R-NY) issued a statement this morning, as quoted by The Post, which lavished Obama with praise: "I commend the Obama Administration for issuing this Executive Order. The bottom line is that it affirms the Bush Administration policy that our government has the right to detain dangerous terrorists until the cessation of hostilities." That perfectly captures the legacy of Barack Obama and civil liberties.

Obama Files More Anti-Leaker Cases in 2 Years than all Presidents in Last 40 Years

The administration that promised more openness with government information has instead taken a tougher stance on whistle-blowing than any other White House in the last four decades.

Since taking office, President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice has filed criminal charges in five separate cases involving unauthorized distribution of classified national security information to the media. Before Obama, the government prosecuted a total of three cases during the previous 40 years.

The two highest profile cases being pursued currently involve WikiLeaks; one against founder Julian Assange and another against Army Private Bradley Manning who is accused of turning classified military and diplomatic files over to the whistle-blowing website.

A third case, begun during the Bush-era, is against former National Security Agency official Thomas Drake, who was charged with willful retention of national defense information after allegedly leaking information about waste in the government’s secret surveillance program to the Baltimore Sun in 2006 and 2007.

Another trial will decide whether former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling leaked information about a covert operation to sabotage Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

The Obama administration also prosecuted FBI contract linguist Shamai Leibowitz for sharing classified documents with a blogger and has accused State Department contract analyst Stephen Kim of giving a Fox News reporter secret information regarding U.S. policy regarding North Korea.

The Obama administration’s hard-line stance may end up having a chilling effect on others who want to expose wrongdoing on the government’s part, says Jesselyn Radack, a former Justice Department attorney now with the Government Accountability Project.

Radack told Politico that it’s “very destructive and damaging to be going after people for leaks that embarrass the government,” adding the policy is “a disturbing one, particularly from a president who got elected pledging openness and transparency—and someone who also got elected thanks to a lot of [Bush-era] scandals that were revealed by whistleblowers.”

Do you hear the ghosts yet, Barry?

When Israel was in Egypt’s land,
Let My people go!
Oppressed so hard they could not stand,
Let My people go!

Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt’s land;
Tell old Pharaoh
To let My people go!

No more shall they in bondage toil,
Let My people go!
Let them come out with Egypt’s spoil,
Let My people go!

Oh, let us all from bondage flee,
Let My people go!
And let us all in Christ be free,
Let My people go!

You need not always weep and mourn,
Let My people go!
And wear these slav’ry chains forlorn,
Let My people go!

Your foes shall not before you stand,
Let My people go!
And you’ll possess fair Canaan’s land,
Let My people go!
