ninakat, thank you for that post ^^ of those GORGEOUS Arvo Pärt compositions. Here’s another of his pieces, first performed on the piano, then on the carillon.

    Für Alina | Arvo Pärt

YOUTUBE NOTES. This piano piece is one of Pärt’s most famous compositions. It is written in the composer’s tintinnabuli style. It is only natural to try out how it sounds on real bells. This video is recorded from a live recital on the carillon of Peer, in the province of Limburg, Belgium. It is played by Australian carillonneur Isaac Wong. The sound is recorded on ground level.

Chronicles the Fifth International Piano Competition
for Outstanding Amateurs

Some favorite quotes from a couple of contestants interviewed for the film.

“You know, doing it [playing piano] in front of people is a lot different than doing it in your boxers in your living room at midnight.”

“If you can earn [a] million dollars by any other way but music, do it.”
AREA23 movievents wrote:They Came to Play, a film directed by Alex Rotaru, chronicles the Fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, hosted by The Van Cliburn Foundation. [Here’s the Sixth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs.]

Players from all over the world, ranging from self-taught to classically-trained, aged thirty-five to almost eighty, convene in Fort Worth, Texas for a week of intense competition, music and camaraderie.

The film provides an intimate look into the lives of these colorful, multi-faceted competitors as they strive to balance the demands of work and family with their love of music. Years of dedicated preparation culminate in critical performances before a professional jury and discerning audience during three nerve-wracking elimination rounds. [REFER.]
Other amateur piano competitions include: Calgary; Boston; Chicago; Colorado Springs; New York; Seattle; Washington D.C..

Charles Limb | Your Brain on Improv

TED NOTES. Charles Limb has two titles on his official website: Associate Professor, Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, and Faculty, Peabody Conservatory of Music. He combines his two passions to study the way the brain creates and perceives music. He's a hearing specialist and surgeon at Johns Hopkins who performs cochlear implantations on patients who have lost their hearing. And he plays sax, piano and bass. More.
