Nobel Committee asked to strip Obama of Peace Prize

The Bolivian President and a Russian political leader have launched a campaign to revoke Obama's honour after the US attacked Libya.

Liberal Democratic Party of Russia leader and Vice-Chairman of the State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky released a statement today calling for the Nobel Prize Committee to take back the honour bestowed on US President Barack Obama in 2009.

Zhirinovsky said the attacks were "another outrageous act of aggression by NATO forces and, in particular, the United States," and that the attacks demonstrated a "colonial policy" with "one goal: to establish control over Libyan oil and the Libyan regime." He said the prize was now hypocritical as a result.

Bolivian President Evo Morales echoed the call: "How is it possible that a Nobel Peace Prize winner leads a gang to attack and invade? This is not a defence of human rights or self-determination."

Morales won the Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights in 2006.

He is amongst a number of left-leaning Latin American leaders who have denounced the attacks against Libya. Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Rafael Correa of Ecuador, Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Cristina Ferdinez of Argentina have all criticised western media coverage of the Libyan crisis.

Morales and Chavez repeated calls for peace talks with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples." The Committee praised the "change in the international climate" affected by Obama's presidency.

In his Nobel Lecture, he discussed the "hard truth" of the inevitability of war, saying: "There will be times when nations — acting individually or in concert — will find the use of force not only necessary but morally justified."

A message has been widely retweeted on Twitter today: "Obama has now fired more cruise missiles than all other Nobel Peace prize winners combined."

Obama Says U.S. Forced to Act in Libya to Avert Massacre

By Mike Dorning and Hans Nichols

March 29 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama declared a doctrine for using military force that envisions a global U.S. role to halt atrocities repugnant to “our common humanity” while limiting the burden the nation will bear.

In an address on the mission in Libya, Obama presented a rationale for committing U.S. armed forces in the North African country that balances humanitarian principles and strategic calculation. In doing so, he set out differences with the way his two immediate predecessors handled foreign crises.

“We should not be afraid to act, but the burden of action should not be America’s alone,” Obama said last night at the National Defense University in Washington.

Obama’s speech, coming nine days after the U.S. and its allies began airstrikes in Libya, was his first televised address directly to the U.S. public seeking to explain and defend his use of force. Leading Republicans and some members of his own party have criticized the president for not defining the mission’s objectives, costs and timeframe and for not consulting more with Congress.

Obama said he had to take military action in Libya to avert a massacre of civilians that would have “stained the conscience of the world.”

Last night Obama said this:

"And as president, I refuse to wait for the images of
slaughter and mass graves to take action"

He forgot to mention, UNLESS its the US and NATO doing the mass slaughter.
(Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, etc)

The hypocrisy is so rife with obviousness, it's sad no reporter picks up on it

Wow ... and right before the "slaughter and mass graves" whopper, he actually said this:

"To brush aside America's responsibility as a leader and — more profoundly — our responsibilities to our fellow human beings under such circumstances would have been a betrayal of who we are," Obama said. "Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as president, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action."

Uggh. That's just freaking evil. Has the doublespeak ever been this explicit? I guess you have to say shit like this to make the "kill team" videos invisible to the public. It really is some awesomely evil voodoo magic perception management these guys are working.

It really is.

Prof. Abdul Salaam Jalali, a health specialist, called for an investigation into whether ammunition used by the international coalition contained uranium or white phosphorus, both of which have been proven to causes deformities to a fetus in the womb.

Well, Paul Craig Roberts stepped up to the plate at least. But then, he's not a reporter, so this can be chalked up to political posturing, right?

The real issue is that there is extremely low likelihood that the speculations of the untrained, on a topic almost pathologically riddled by dynamic considerations and feedback effects, will offer anything new.

Holy crap. I mean I knew it was coming. But hot damn.

It's like people were saying on here in 2008...the PTB will be able to get MORE hideous things done under Obama than with Bush, including really pushing the TSA, Orwellian stuff, etc.

It's brilliant. They KNOW the left is now effectively neutered and pacified. And the right who hate Obama? They're just racists.

So it's brilliant. Even Michelle Bachman was saying how she is worried Obama is using a lot of dialogue and actions that seem very Cheney neocon like.

To continue the Orwellian theme:

Shh! Obama gets anti-secrecy award

President Obama finally and quietly accepted his “transparency” award from the open government community this week — in a closed, undisclosed meeting at the White House on Monday.

The secret presentation happened almost two weeks after the White House inexplicably postponed the ceremony, which was expected to be open to the press pool.

This time, Obama met quietly in the Oval Office with Gary Bass of OMB Watch, Tom Blanton of the National Security Archive, Danielle Brian of the Project on Government Oversight, Lucy Dalglish of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and Patrice McDermott of OpenTheGovernment.org, without disclosing the meeting on his public schedule or letting photographers or print reporters into the room.

“Our understanding going into the meeting was that it would have a pool photographer and a print reporter, and it turned out to be a private meeting,” Bass told POLITICO. “He was so on point, so on target in the conversation with us, it is baffling why he would not want that message to be more broadly heard by reporters and the public interest community and the public generally.”

Just hours before the White House put off the original event, White House press secretary Jay Carney was defiant in his defense of Obama’s transparency record against criticism that it might have been premature.

“This president has demonstrated a commitment to transparency and openness that is greater than any administration has shown in the past, and he’s been committed to that since he ran for President and he’s taken a significant number of measures to demonstrate that,” Carney said in a testy exchange with Fox News reporter Wendell Goler on March 16.

The transparency advocates who presented the award to Obama say that the recognition is important, because despite the work left to be done, Obama has done a lot to change the government’s posture toward openness issues.

But others believed the positive reinforcement was more than a little unnecessary.

“I don’t feel moved today to say ‘thank you, Mr. President,’” said Steve Aftergood, the director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists. But he said he understands the award to be “aspirational,” in recognition of Obama’s potential to do more on the transparency front.

“And in that sense, one could say it resembles the award at the Nobel Peace Prize,” Aftergood said. “It’s not because Obama brought peace to anyone but because people hoped he would be a force for good in the world, and maybe that’s the way to understand this award.”

Obama administration sides with Uribe on subpoena

By PETE YOST
Associated Press

The Obama administration urged a federal judge to move cautiously rather than order former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to undergo questioning now about any knowledge of right-wing death squads.

In a court filing Thursday night, the Justice Department said federal courts should respect concerns expressed by the government of Colombia over a subpoena for Uribe to testify in a lawsuit by families of death squad victims.

The families are seeking damages from Alabama-based coal company Drummond for allegedly supporting right-wing death squads.

...

Uribe, who remains popular in Colombia for having weakened leftist rebels, has been teaching at Georgetown University in Washington.

Álvaro Uribe’s Suspicious Popularity
Marc Lizoain

Whenever Colombian President Álvaro Uribe’s name is mentioned in the U.S. press, it is seldom without reference to his overwhelming popularity. When he met with President Obama in June, Obama closed their joint press conference by joking that, “The other thing I should say is that if I were to serve two terms, I’m fairly confident that I would not have the 70 percent approval rating that President Uribe has.” Since he became president in 2002, Uribe’s popularity in the polls has seldom been lower than 70% and reached a high of 91% in July of 2008.

The perception of such popularity is politically useful. The Economist notes that Uribe’s “overwhelming support” helped convince the Colombian Congress and courts that the Constitution should be changed to allow his first re-election in 2006, and he is counting on it to push through a further amendment that will let him run once more in 2010. Colombians, it seems, do not hold scandals against their leader. Not even offenses as egregious as the paramilitary ties of dozens of his parliamentary allies (including his cousin), or the systematic extrajudicial murder of civilians bogusly classified as subversives. After all, as the New York Times editorialized last year, he is “The leader who brought Colombia back from the brink and onto a path toward peace.”

But if we look at the polls that rate Uribe so highly, grave questions must be asked about the reliability of the public opinion industry in Colombia. For a poll result to be accurate it needs to be drawn from a random and representative sample. Yet Invamer-Gallup, Colombia’s leading polling agency, only conducts interviews in the nation’s four largest cities! While the citizens of Bogotá, Medellín, Barranquilla, and Cali are without doubt entitled to their opinions, and may even strongly support their president, by no stretch of the imagination can the views of people who make up less than a third of Colombia’s population be considered representative. Even worse, the views of the more than ten million Colombians who live in rural areas are totally ignored. Imagine if a pollster reported that President Obama had an 80% approval rating, based on survey results from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Who could take it seriously?

It matters not.

Many voters will vote for the Democratic Presidential candidate... just because he or she isn't a Republican.

Lesser evilism absolves many sins for them.

+1

And remember Bush's second term. Nobody could have imagined planes flying into buildings, much less Dubya being (s)elected AGAIN.

Who cares? The script was already written, Obama even said so early on, that he was happy being a one-termer.

The question is will the American people actually take control of their elections? Or will they permit themselves to be spoon-fed two more corporatist "candidates" (appointees, really).
