anyone have any thoughts good or bad about:justdrew wrote:I just want to reemphasize this link, on-ramp to really important info here:

yet another case were Freud "changed his mind" about new ideas related to important human psychological issues, that could have revolutionized human development. thereby down-regulating those idea to the "fringe"
I would love to know exactly who it was that was twisting Freud, probably the same people that promoted him. oh wait. Edward Bernays and his circle, but there must be others, plus whoever it was, had a major impact directly on Anna Freud, whatever/whoever it was, she got a first hand dose of it if you ask me.

Justdrew, I'll say something radical, If you have a stored trauma response from the incident, any good, client-centered trauma therapist can help you with it as well as subsequent reactions, grief, etc. The difficulty is finding a good one.
I'm truly sorry that you or any other male was subjected to that kind of mutilation.
And, no doubt, Freud's turnabouts negatively impacted several generations of trauma survivors.

thanks Willow, I don't know if there's anything particularly there for me or not, but it's an interesting area to look into.Project Willow wrote:Justdrew, I'll say something radical, If you have a stored trauma response from the incident, any good, client-centered trauma therapist can help you with it as well as subsequent reactions, grief, etc. The difficulty is finding a good one.

Here's an interesting site along these lines:

Lloyd deMause is well known to most child abuse activists. Many of his theories are spot on, describing mechanisms in the individual that contribute to abusive systems and psychopathology on a grand scale. His work, together with just a few of his contemporaries, was absolutely revelatory at the time, in terms of connecting the effects of private violence, namely child abuse, with destructive political movements.
I have here in front of me, a 20 year old volume, one of his Journal of Psychohistory publications. Amongst the titles: The universality of Incest; Darkness Invisible; The Social Trance.

re Freud's "turnabout", i tend to think it had to do with the services he provided to the ruling classes of the empire: a way to keep their uppity women and men (the questioners and doubters) in check, cf., hysteria. – it's amazing the things you can get away with if a professional quack is willing to certify your victim and lock her or him up without trial. Freud wanted success, so he toed the line. simple.Project Willow wrote:Justdrew, I'll say something radical, If you have a stored trauma response from the incident, any good, client-centered trauma therapist can help you with it as well as subsequent reactions, grief, etc. The difficulty is finding a good one.

Anna von Lieben's case provides a good example.

Yes. He did not have the fortitude nor did he aspire to take on the role of whistle blower. On the contrary, he was a social climber whose scientific discoveries and ambition, unforeseeably, made war with one another. So despite what his discoveries told him was the truth, he did indeed, ultimately, toe the line.vanlose kid wrote: Freud wanted success, so he toed the line. simple.

IRT to the OP, initially I thought attempts at legislative reform a ridiculous idea and it may be so. It does appear that genital mutilation is a very ancient traditional practice and has no foundation in modern religions, yet is still carried out. There's clearly great age and meaning for various cultures. I first learned more about FGM long ago, preparing a presentation for a college course. I later had an experience similar to CW's, which I will not describe, except to say as Nordic did, over my dead body.
BTW, Nordic, I salute you for your progressive attitude about your son's wholeness. I hope he continues to learn about his rather enviable state.
I oppose non-consensual genital mutilation, enough said. But the subject is fascinating in many ways.
