CIA spied on bin Laden from safe house
Washington Post: Months of surveillance from nearby home led to daring raid on al Qaeda leader's compound
The CIA maintained a safe house in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad for a small team of spies who conducted extensive surveillance over a period of months on the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. Special Operations forces this week, U.S. officials said.
The secret CIA facility was used as a base of operations for one of the most delicate human intelligence gathering missions in recent CIA history, one that relied on Pakistani informants and other sources to help assemble a "pattern of life" portrait of the occupants and daily activities at the fortified compound where bin Laden was found, the officials said.
The on-the-ground surveillance work was part of an intelligence-gathering push mobilized after the discovery of the suspicious complex last August that involved virtually every category of collection in the U.S. arsenal, ranging from satellite imagery to eavesdropping efforts aimed at recording voices inside the compound.
The effort was so extensive and costly that the CIA went to Congress in December to secure authority to reallocate tens of millions of dollars within assorted agency budgets to fund it, U.S. officials said.
Most of that surveillance capability remained in place until the execution of the raid by U.S. Navy SEALs shortly after 1 a.m. in Pakistan. The agency's safe house did not play a role in the raid and has since been shut down, in part because of concerns about the safety of CIA assets in the aftermath, but also because the agency's work was considered finished.
"The CIA's job was to find and fix," said a U.S. official, using Special Operations forces terminology for the identification and location of a high-value target. "The intelligence work was as complete as it was going to be, and it was the military's turn to finish the target."
The official, like others quoted for this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the record. The CIA declined to comment.

There is speculation that the woman on the far left is Barack Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham. Mostly a bunch of right wing bullshit turns up when trying to drill down on this.

That picture was taken in Falun, Sweden, where the clout level probably doesn't need to rise quite so high.

AD, that's the best thing I've read yet on this whole event. It actually makes sense.

I was attempting to find any kind of mention of Obama's mom and his time in Seattle in the archives.
The bin Laden family photo shows they had the clout to close down a street in London(?) for a very western family pic and Obama's supposedly anti-war mom is unmentionable to this day -- if that is his mom. I suppose there is some resemblance. All I can think of is grooming, training, in both cases, to be called upon at a later date. Osama and fam looks like something straight out of Sesame Street and the arrest of Ann Dunham looks like quite the happy occasion.
Another Ann Dunham, this one involved in anti-war activities during the Vietnam war as one of the Camden 28. This image comes from a story in the Long Beach, CA, Independent, August 23, 1971. (There’s another image of her on the Camden 28 link.) This particular Ann Dunham is seen third from left, at the top of the photo, wearing hand cuffs. Isn’t it interesting that this group of individuals broke into the Selective Service records in Camden, New Jersey? This Ann Dunham was 23 in 1971 and came from Pelham, New York, according to the story.
Below is the text of the story. If you click the images, they will enlarge so you can read more easily. Not only did they intend to steal draft records, they wanted to steal FBI files and Army intelligence records, too. A nearly simultaneous attempt was made in Buffalo, NY.
Involved in this conspiracy were Ann (aka Anne) Dunham, Margaret M. Inness (aka Innes), Dr. William Anderson, John Peter Grady (sociologist and housing/anti-war activist, who helped in the defense of the Catonsville 9), Paul Bernard Couming, John Swinglish, Rev. Peter D. Fordi, Robert Glenn Good, Michael John Giocondo, Rosemary Reilly, Kathleen Mary Ridolfa (aka Ridolfi), Robert W. Williamson, Keith William Forsyth, Terry Edward Buckalew, Lianne Moccia, Rev. Michael J. Doyle, Joan Reilly, Francis Mel Madden, Barry J. Mussi (aka Musi), Sarah (aka Sara) Jane Tosi, Rev. Milo M. Billman, Charles Darst, Joseph Hill, James Martin, Anita Ricci, Ann Master, Martha Shemeley, Jayma Abdoo, Eugene Dixon, Rev. Edward McGowan, Frank Pommersheim, Rev. Edward Murphy, and Maureen Considine. There are more names here than 28, but all were taken from the news story and the Camden 28 link.
The trial was held in spring, 1973. Apparently only 17 of the alleged participants were tried. News articles tell of the usual defense arguments: It was entrapment via “agent provacateur” (on cue, the New York Times agreed); the searches of the women were illegal; it was justified to prevent young men from becoming “victims” of war; the selective service is “akin to slavery.” Rosa Parks was invoked. The ACLU chimed in. The Mafia was implicated.
The judge instructed the jury that they could acquit if they determined that the FBI intolerably “fomented” the crime. The jury requested the judge to re-read testimony from the “agent provacateur.” The jury foreperson (a woman) asked to be relieved after an “upset” in the jury room. On the first ballot, half were for acquittal.
In the end, as the New York Times reported, “A jury of five men and seven women … found 17 members of the Camden 28 not guilty … even though the defendants admitted having done so and 80 FBI agents caught them at it.” Unusual common sense from the New York Times.
Upon hearing the verdict, supporters in the courtroom sang Amazing Grace. One juror wrote to the defendants, applauding them for standing up to “men who failed the people by raining death and destruction on a hapless country. … Well done!”
I can’t link these many stories because they’re in a database to which one needs a subscription. This issue of entrapment, that was so well played in the cases of the Catonville 9 and the Camden 28, also reared its head in the Weatherman trials. Today, of course, we hear the same arguments put forth by attorneys who defend Islamic jihadi terrorists. The more things change . . .
Isn’t it odd that this other Ann Dunham held views that conform so closely with those of another Ann Dunham’s son, Barry Obama, as well as his friends Ayers and Dohrn?
Open thread.

The real question is what the heck was Jack Ruby doing there?

This should clear things up. (I like the 'made before he was killed' bit.)
