Rikers! That's a serious hard core prison. I can understand the judge not granting bail, since he is a foreigner with lots of money and would be considered a flight risk. But Rikers ain't no country club. He better be careful not to drop the soap when he showers.

I think this may all be part of the possible ploy. We will see what the days bring. But I highly doubt he is in GP. The connotation of NY's Rikers' Prison could be meant for the overall narrative.

The judge is also a woman.

And DSK appears to be an extremely short fellow.

Riker's Island? This is getting more "totally hallucinating" by the hour.

Everybody knew what he was about. Safe to assume he's done
this before and skated since these people are, under normal
circumstances, above the law.

Now comes time to take him out of the game. So dangle a little
irresistible and let nature take its course. Disclaimer: this theory
quite likely requires little irresistible to be in on it but that's a
leap that this crowd can probably handle.

This way you all win. The rape team has their rapist and the

I am.

Pip pip.

Reasonable but the level of lunacy is surprising. They're not just taking him out, they're giving him the John Walker Lindh Jose Padilla Bradley Manning treatment. Somebody seriously hates this guy but why?

Now it's up to six charges:

Strauss-Kahn faces six charges:
Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree:
    Attempted Rape in the First Degree;
    Sexual Abuse in the First Degree;
    Unlawful Imprisonment in the Second Degree;
    Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree;
    Forcible Touching.

Good thing he didn't try to steal any towels or he'd be up for grand larceny too. In any case it appears actual rape is not among the charges:

Strauss-Kahn in Rikers Island jail until Friday court appearance
By RFI - Tuesday 17 May 2011

Satellite view of Rikers Island

Dominique Strauss-Kahn is set to appear in court again on Friday after being denied bail in the rape case against him on Monday. The French Socialist politician and International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief spent the night in New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail, where officials say he will not have contact with other prisoners for his own safety.
Because of a perceived risk of attacks on famous people, Strauss-Kahn will only leave his cell accompanied by a prison-guard, the officials say. mon dieu!

The charge sheet states that “the defendant engaged in oral sexual conduct and anal sexual conduct with another person by forcible compulsion". Forced oral sex is not rape according to US law.

On Friday a 23-person Grand Jury will hear his alleged victim and establish whether he has a case to answer, as Judge Melissa Jackson ruled when he appeared before her on Monday.

Jackson turned down the defence’s offer of a million dollars (700,000 euros) bail, which came with a promise that Strauss-Kahn would hand over his passport and stay with one of his daughters who lives in New York.

The prosecution invoked the case of film director Roman Polanski, who fled the US when facing rape charges, to oppose the demand and alleged that the IMF boss was implicated in “at least one” other similar case.

Strauss-Kahn’s lawyers claimed in court that he left the hotel where the rape is said to have taken place in the hurry because he had a lunch appointment. They have promised to produce the person he was due to meet.

The website of RMC.fr radio on Monday said that they hoped to provide an alibi by arguing that he had left the hotel an hour before the alleged rape for a lunch appointment with his daughter.

The site also reported that the defence intends to argue that the alleged victim, who apparently did not know who her alleged attacker was, is not attractive enough to attract the interest of their client.

The IMF executive board met late Monday to discuss the arrest but made public statement on a decision on Strauss-Kahn’s position.

The executive committee of France’s Socialist Party was to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday, with party leader Martine Aubry present.

Strauss-Kahn was expected to bid to be the party’s presidential candidate in 2012 but is now likely to be facing trial in the autumn, when party members vote on the question.

Socialist politicians have condemned the publication of photos of their colleague in handcuffs – an act which would have been illegal in France without the permission of the person concerned.

As everyone tries to make sense of the story and its implications, please don't equate attempted rape with trying to steal towels. It's not helpful, and even hurtful.

That should wrap it up then.

Now I'm wondering if I heard the French correctly, although it was very short statement. I've always thought he would plead guilty to some lesser charge.

Here is latest from NY Daily News

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crim ... s_kin.html

The brother of the maid who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault says the family believes justice will prevail.

"She's very upset because she loves her job," said the 43-year-old brother, whose name the Daily News is withholding to protect the identity of the woman. "She's a wonderful, hardworking woman."

The woman is from Senegal and has a 9-year-old daughter, according to her brother, who is a manager at a Harlem cafe.

"What would you feel if it was your sister? We are in pain," he said.

But he said the powerful French politician will be punished. "This is America - he won't get away with it," he said. "Justice will be served. That's why we love America."

Strauss-Kahn, meanwhile, says he didn't force himself on the chambermaid.

As he was deemed a flight risk and held without bail, his lawyer offered a hint at how he will be defended against the sex-assault rap.

"The forensic evidence, we believe, will not be consistent with a forcible encounter," big-shot attorney Benjamin Brafman said. "And we believe there is a very defensible case."

Prosecutor John McConnell described the accuser as a highly credible victim who "provided a very powerful and detailed account of the violent sexual assault."

She told hotel staffers and cops her story immediately after the alleged attack Saturday afternoon at the Times Square-area Sofitel New York hotel. While sources say neither Strauss-Kahn nor the woman had bruises or scratches, McConnell said in court that a hospital exam supported her account.

DNA results won't be known for several days, but an examination of the hotel room suggests "there may be forensic evidence that will support the victim's version of events," McConnell said.

Prosecutors portrayed Strauss-Kahn - head of the International Monetary Fund and a top contender for the French presidency - as a fiendish sex predator. They said he ambushed the maid while in the buff at his $1,300-a-night suite.

"He grabbed the victim's chest without consent, attempted to remove her pantyhose and forcibly grabbed the victim's vaginal area," the criminal complaint said.

"His penis made contact with the victim's mouth twice through the use of force."

Strauss-Kahn was hauled off an Air France flight by cops who got a bead on his whereabouts when he called the hotel to ask about a cell phone he thought he left behind.

He was later picked out of a lineup by the hotel worker, a single mom who lives in the Bronx. He was No. 3 out of five, sources said.

Strauss-Kahn spent Sunday at the NYPD's special victims unit office, where he had eggs, toast and home fries for breakfast and a ham and cheese sandwich for dinner.

Known in France as a thrice-married womanizer nicknamed "The Great Seducer" and "Hot Rabbit," he appeared baggy-eyed and haggard at his Manhattan Criminal Court arraignment.

He was hit with attempted rape, criminal sexual act and unlawful imprisonment charges and faces 25 years in prison if convicted.

His lawyers went into the hearing expecting him to be freed on $1 million bail, arguing he has a home in Washington and a daughter in New York.

"The defendant has an interest to clear his name," said Brafman, adding that Strauss-Kahn's New York-born wife, Anne Sinclair, was on her way to the city to stand by her husband's side.

McConnell warned that Strauss-Kahn could bolt.

"He has almost no incentive to stay in this country and almost every resource to leave it," he said, noting that surveillance cameras captured Strauss-Kahn making a hasty departure from the hotel.

The pol's lawyers said Strauss-Kahn was not trying to escape, but was rushing from the hotel to make a lunch date with his daughter before catching a 4:30 p.m. flight home.

Judge Melissa Jackson ordered him held until a court date Friday.

"We are obviously disappointed by the court's decision," Brafman said outside court.

"This battle has just begun. We believe that we'll prove in our judgment that Mr. Strauss-Kahn is innocent of these charges."

Until he returns to court, the Socialist Party titan will be held in protective custody at Rikers Island, said Correction Department spokesman Stephen Morello.

The victim is in hiding. Neighbors say she has a teenage daughter and that she always wears an Islamic head scarf and worked long hours. "She was very private," said neighbor Mark Gangadeen. "This is a good person."

^ yeah I noticed that attractiveness defense but as I'd already reached the maximum number of smiley connections I let it go. I don't expect it will fly. All in all it sounds like he was expecting a call girl and they both got switcherooed. Very unfortunate and of course not accidental. Anyway here's a good backgrounder:

Sex, scandal, top politician … nothing new there
By Marc DAOU / Sophie PILGRIM (text)

After being accused of attempting to rape a New York City hotel maid, the reputation of IMF chief and French presidential hopeful Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been shattered. He joins a long list of politicians who have met a similar fate. From 1960s Britain to modern-day Malaysia, sordid scandals have forced a long list of high flyers, rightly or wrongly accused of sexual crimes and misdemeanours, to fall from grace. FRANCE 24 takes a look at a few such scandals.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been linked to a number of scandals. He was accused of paying for sex with an underage prostitute (nicknamed "Ruby") on several occasions between February and May of 2010 and of abusing his power to secure her release from police custody after she was arrested on unrelated theft charges. The now-renowned “Rubygate” trial is to resume on May 31 after it was adjourned in early April this year.

The former deputy prime minister of Malaysia and current head of the opposition, Anwar Ibrahim, faces up to 20 years in prison if he is found guilty of sodomising a 25-year-old aide who says he forced him into having sex in June 2008. Malaysia’s high court ruled on May 16 that prosecutors have established a credible sodomy case against him. Ibrahim says the government has concocted the charges against him.

Former Israeli president Moshe Katsav lost his job in 2007 because of a sex scandal. After a lengthy trial, he was found guilty of twice raping one of his colleagues at the tourism ministry, which he headed in the late 1990s, and later of sexually harassing and indecently assaulting an employee at his presidential residence. He was sentenced to seven years in prison in March this year. Katsav has appealed the conviction and sentence.

Former Zimbabwean president and Methodist minister Canaan Banana was condemned to one year in prison in May 2000 for 11 counts of sodomy and for forcing male staff members to carry out “unnatural acts” during his time in office in the 1980s. He was released after only eight months. He died in 2003.

    Image
    Jacob Zuma
South African President Jacob Zuma was cleared of raping an HIV-positive woman in 2006 at a trial that was broadcast on live television. The judge ruled that the sex was consensual, but strongly criticised Zuma for having unprotected sex with somebody who he knew was HIV-positive.

“Monicagate” is perhaps the world’s most infamous sex scandal. Former US president Bill Clinton was accused in 1997 of having sexual relations with 22-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky between 1995 and 1997. In the meantime, a former colleague of the president's, Paula Jones, accused him of sexual harassment during his time as governor of Arkansas in the early 1990s. While that case was settled out of court, the Lewinsky revelations led to the impeachment of the president. He was eventually cleared of the charges and of obstructing the course of justice but forced to admit that he had “inappropriate” relations with Lewinsky.

    Image
    John Profumo
In 1963, then-British secretary of war John Profumo was forced to resign over a sex scandal that was linked to concerns over Russian espionage during the Cold War after it was revealed that he was having a relationship with call girl Christine Keeler, who was also having relations with a senior naval attaché at the Soviet embassy in London.

The former Democratic governor of New York state, Eliot Spitzer, resigned from his post in 2008 after it was revealed that he had spent thousands of dollars on high-class prostitutes during his time in office. Formerly known as “New York’s Mr. Clean”, Spitzer stood down just a year after being elected following threats of impeachment.

Between ex-Senator Ensign, this guy and my own ex-Governor, it's as if the theme for May is "creepy old men get their due"

Schwarzenegger fathered a child with longtime member of household staff

And the revelation prompted Maria Shriver to move out.
By Mark Z. Barabak and Victoria Kim, Los Angeles Times
May 17, 2011
Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, separated after she learned he had fathered a child more than a decade ago — before his first run for office — with a longtime member of their household staff.

Shriver moved out of the family's Brentwood mansion earlier this year, after Schwarzenegger acknowledged the paternity. The staff member worked for the family for 20 years, retiring in January.

"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger said Monday night in a statement issued to The Times in response to questions. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.

Photos: A political marriage with star power

"I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time," the statement concluded. "While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not. "

A spokesman for the former first lady said she had no comment.

Since leaving office, Schwarzenegger has maintained a high public profile, meeting with world dignitaries, attending a White House summit on immigration and working to revive his movie career.

To protect their privacy, The Times is not publishing the former staffer's name nor that of her child. In an interview Monday before Schwarzenegger issued his statement, the former staffer said another man — her then-husband — was the child's father.

She said she voluntarily left her position with the couple earlier this year after reaching a longstanding goal of working for them for two decades. "I wanted to achieve my 20 years, then I asked to retire," she said, adding she received a severance payment and "left on good terms with them."

Later Monday, The Times informed the woman of the governor's statement and she declined to comment further.

Sarkozy's father says first lady pregnant: paper

BERLIN/PARIS (Reuters) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy's father was quoted by a German newspaper on Tuesday as saying that first lady Carla Bruni is expecting a child, apparently confirming the subject of weeks of speculation.

...

Sarkozy's office said it did not comment on his private life.

...

His chances of re-election looked brighter this week after the man seen with the best chance of winning the presidency, IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, was arrested in New York and charged with attempting to rape a hotel maid.

Assuming people won't vote for a sex beast. Didn't seem to do Clinton any harm.

Why is it that Americans charge their criminals with multiple crimes for a single criminal action?

Perhaps he's innocent after all, this wouldn't be the normal way to do things with such a rich alleged rapist. And being a foreigner with lots of money I would normally expect to make him more likely to be granted bail, as he has assets which can be confiscated. That's why the likes of Michael Jackson don't spend time on remand before trial, because of the money at stake if they skip bail.

Also, jokes about prison rape, especially in a thread about rape, are in somewhat bad taste.
