American football absolutely requires a helmet if you wanna survive playing it. Believe it or not, Joe, in its fits and starts and time outs and everything else, American football is a far more bone rattling sport than any out there. It comes down to body size and what is expected of said body at elite levels of strength, speed and competition. A bunch of blonde Aussies running after a ball and crashing into each other is not the same thing. Those helmets are not there as a costume. Perhaps at the little league level in order to suck kids into the system of getting used to applying themselves and their parents to the violence and assent to authority that is football. But after that, it's all fucking protection. I'm not saying it's better or worse, but it is more violent, perhaps more so because the players are wearing protection.

But American football, speaking of the word "protection", is all about protection. Protecting the ball. Protecting the QB. Protecting the kicker. Making a route safe for the running back. Etc. If you're on defense, your job is to totally focus on defense. When on offense your job is to only play offense. There is no other sport like that. Not saying it makes it better than any one sport, but it is a unique and totally American sport.

I played it for a year man, (have we had this discussion before?).

Did I post this already?

Yes, we've had the discussion. You're still wrong on football and Morrissey though.

Here's the deal, and don't worry it ain't no argument, but NFL players would physically school those "little" rugby dudes. They would.

Look at the sportsmanship right here after a FAMOUS and historical NFL injury -- one people still to this day talk about. Look at the lack of hate and anger in the football players. It was immediate concern and nothing more. No pushing, no shoving, no hate, just OMFG!

Now look at some creepy ass goalie injury (careful though, very upsetting -- Malarchuk survived):

In both cases there were no douches on the teams. Sportsmanship came to the fore.

This is the same thing, listen to the commentator. Watch Sav's teammate.

Only in the Pickett hit, it was all legal, the umpire saw it called play on, and in fact Biglands looked like he initiated the hit by attempting to put a block on Pickett.

Mind you allegedly soft Aussie Rules players have their moments, even after they've retired.

About bad injuries ...

When Matthew Whelan snapped Nathan Browns leg in a similar injury to the one above, as soon as he realised what he had done his first reaction was exactly the same as L.T.s (I remember that injury actually.) You can see it in the last seconds of the video (Warning another snappd leg watch only if you're bloodthirsty).

No one in any sport wants to do something like that, but aggression is a fundamental part of any contact sport, especially in finals/playoffs. So aggression is fundamental, and really catastrophic injury is a risk you take when you play contact sport. So is a certain amount of courage/stupidity.

I don't mind Ice Hockey, as we call it, its a hard fast game and it takes a fair bit of commitment.

Lacrosse is cool too, I'd love to have played that when I was younger.

82 - that thing you posted with Malarchuk was so sad. :( I was really heartened to hear the way the announcers handled it, even though I really felt for the one guy. I just wanted them to call the game over and let everyone go home and process it.

Okay, I turn on CBC Newsworld at noon, and the big news is that Winnipeg is getting their NHL franchise (Atlanta Thrashers moving.)

The same dang press conferences have now been on for 50 minutes on CTV Newsnet, and CBC network.

I mean it's great n' all, but 50 mins of bland suits talking about fundraising and season ticket packages is a little much...

Edit: 75 minutes now. Nothing else happened today, I guess. Jeannie Lee the CBC biz reporter says the team should be named the Loonies, since the strong CDN $ made the move possible.

I think they should stay the Winnipeg Jets as a perpetual reminder of the Avro Arrow.

Great game! Just got home from the bartending shit. What a game! You go Vancouver! Scoring with 12 seconds left? Jesus H Christ. Boston was clearly getting into the mental zone of another 15 minutes of play. Vancouver capital-the-fuck-alized! My whole bar erupted. Seattle's in your corner V-couv.

That was sweet. But was looking forward to more intenseness as far as a prolonged OT. It will be interesting to see the vile massholes in the stands in the coming games.

Feilan, I can't believe I am actually going to admit this (shhh, don't tell anyone) but I actually saw that tie breaking goal. Some in my circle are Canadian, but what I hadn't realized is that the hockey thing had rubbed off on others of my circle, so "the game" was on this afternoon, even though our Canadian friends were elsewhere. I got caught up in it too, I had little choice as no one really wanted to discuss politics or art, annoyingly enough, so I also yelled with them when I saw that goal.

I hate yelling at sports teams! I hate sports! My life is going down the toilet!

I love Canadians though. :partyhat

No OT tonight. A swarm of angry bees on fire! Dirty hits all around. Bettman is drunk in his barca lounger calling 'game misconduct' and 'unsportsmanlike conduct' on both teams. A lot of premium bullshit on ice tonight. ... :hrumph

I called Vancouver in 5, so ... a guy who works with the mister, the one **guy in the office posse who couldn't give a small dry turd about hockey, is the only one left in their office pool besides *the mister *(Van. in 6) - **he wrote an algorithm that called Boston in 6 and so far, his algorithm is winning. :partyhat

ahhh, distractions.
