I like a secret controlling alien force. Like in the most recent Doctor Who series villains, The Silence. And the Robert Rankin book "A Dog Called Demolition".

That would be Barry as a teen, before he was pres.... okay, my embellishment needs some tweaking.

But by the gods, I loved those John Christopher books as a teenager, The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire.

SciFi was like my drug, before I got into Real Drugs, (thanks to our Lord Satan); anyway I am contradictorally off to the dojo by the train tracks.

And humble thanks to whomever's wifi I have been stealing these past few days.

Man i read that story when I was a very young kid, about 8 or 10, it was great. Tho the very end was a bit fascist. I was wondering what it was called and who wrote it. Cheers. I seem to remember there are massive domed cities full of technology tho.

Stan Lee was always a pretty straight conservative guy, supportive of the government, and dare I say it, Cold War aims. Now superhero comics aren't what they were, but Marvel have made good money in the last couple of decades exploiting their decades old creative content for the new media of cartoons, live action movies, toy licenses and er cross platform marketing or whatever they call it. I think it means T shirts, games and action figures. I think I just mentioned superhero action figures. I vowed never to mention that on rig int. Looks round quickly. Phew, thank heaven no-one seems to have noticed.

About the Disney thing?

I wept.

Sorry that's a bit off topic. It took me twelve months to get round to installing the software for my wife's I-whatever it is.

Apple is evil, Disney is evil.

Woman Arrested for Taping Police Cleared; Apple Wants "Kill Switch" for Camera Phones

Apple is developing software that can detect when iPhone owners are using their cameras and disable the function, a report last week discovered.

The technology would trigger an infrared sensor, like the kind that is often installed at concert venues, which would instruct the iPhone to shut off its camera. Apple filed the patent application 18 months ago in California, but only became public knowledge after the Daily Mail uncovered the documents.

Apple said the company created the software to prevent users from recording and distributing videos of live concerts to which broadcasters have already bought exclusive rights. But media reform groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Free Press have said that the "kill switch" technology carries with it a more ominous implication - such as what would happen if a government received access to the software.

(snip to skip a couple of paragraphs about Emily Good's case)

But Karr points out that Apple's patent application explains that its kill-switch technology would prevent users from capturing videos or pictures in areas where infrared sensors are present - including "on stages, throughout public squares, or, conceivably, on police helmets."

"You could find that infrared signal being sent out anywhere," EFF Fellow Michael Barclay said, such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) subway station where Oakland resident Oscar Grant was shot and killed by an officer. The incident "was recorded on people's cell phones - the entire shooting," Barclay said. The technology "could potentially be used to suppress legitimate speech."

Government access to the software is also particularly dangerous in countries in the Middle East where new media served an important role in several revolutions against oppressive dictatorships, EFF staff attorney Julie Samuels said.

"The availability of mobile phones with video capability has allowed activists around the world to capture and disseminate important footage, often in the absence of news reporting," Samuels said. "If a government were to gain access to and utilize Apple's technology, the result could mean disastrous consequences."

Karr also points out that such recent examples of important footage include the viral cell phone video of the shooting death of a young Iranian woman named Neda, who was killed by a government militiaman during a demonstration against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the widespread sharing of the video became one of the most influential events to bring global attention to Ahmadinejad's regime and the human rights crisis in Iran.

"What would we know of Neda's shocking death had Iranian security forces disabled that camera?" Karr wrote in a blog post.

The Save the Internet coalition published a petition addressed to Apple CEO Steve Jobs demanding that the company stop developing the technology, stating that it would "give tyrants the power to stem the flow of protest videos and crack down on their citizens with impunity."

"[Just] imagine what would happen if this technology fell into the hands of repressive regimes," the petition states. "As we've seen in Egypt and elsewhere, the images and videos we take with our phones can be powerful forms of free speech.... This tool could be used to silence the voices of protestors and to stifle a critical means of free expression."
Don't believe anything they say.
And at the same time,
Don't believe that they say anything without a reason.

Does Kubrick have dibs on the iPad?

Postby MinM » Wed Aug 24, 2011 6:29 pm

Faced with patent-infringement charges from Apple, Samsung claims that the iPad's design dates back to '2001: A Space Odyssey.'
By Kim Peterson on Wed, Aug 24, 2011 4:13 PM

Give Samsung's lawyers points for creative thinking.

The company says it couldn't possibly have stolen Apple's (AAPL) designs for the iPad because Stanley Kubrick was there first. His 1968 movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" showed the design long before Apple was founded, Samsung says.

In a federal court filing this week, Samsung even references a YouTube clip from the movie that shows two astronauts eating and using tablet computers. You can watch the clip here (below).

Samsung says the tablets used by the astronauts are thin and have a rectangular shape, display screen, narrow borders and flat surfaces on the front and back. That's what Apple claims in its patent, the court filing claims.

I don't know, I think Star Trek has a better claim to the first iPad in this 1989 clip. Or maybe the iPad can trace its origins back to this portable device.

Apple sued Samsung earlier this year over the Galaxy line of devices, saying they trample all over Apple's patents. It has asked a judge to stop Samsung from selling the devices, and a U.S. hearing is pending.

Apple's case has gained some footing in Europe, where a court this week stopped Samsung's Dutch subsidiaries from selling three of its smartphones. The court ruled that the smartphones -- all from the Galaxy line -- did indeed violate Apple's patents.

Here is the just released letter from Steve Jobs:

***

PRESS RELEASE: Letter from Steve Jobs

August 24, 2011–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Suddenly Apple's recent suckfest is starting to make sense.

Final cut X was a real debacle, not unlike the debacles from the time when Jobs wasn't with Apple.

And anyone tried to use the latest version of iMovie? What an infuriatingly shitty piece of software that is.

Why would they deliberately FUCK the pro video community like that?? It's the single most baffling move I've seen a software company make. There's no charitable, non-profanity way to put it, either...their whole user base got stuck bad. So stupid.

Report: Dozens Arrested After Riot at Foxconn Factory

* Angela Moscaritolo By Angela Moscaritolo
* June 6, 2012 10:24am EST

Dozens of workers at a Foxconn plant in Chengdu, China were arrested this week after a clash with security staff, according to a report.

Taiwan-based Want China Times (WCT) reported that the clash broke out Monday night at a male dormitory for Foxconn workers. Security guards had attempted to stop a thief, when several employees with grudges against the officers forced them away.

The situation rapidly escalated, and up to 1,000 workers eventually joined in, WCT reported. Workers threw trash bins, chairs, pots, bottles, and even fireworks from the upper floors of the building, destroying public facilitates.

The riot ended after two hours, after dorm administrators reported the case to local police and hundreds of officers arrived at the scene to suppress the violence. Dozens were arrested.

Foxconn, the world's largest electronic contract manufacturer, employs up to 120,000 people at its plant in Chengdu, located in southwestern China. The factory mainly produces liquid crystal displays for electronic products such as Apple's iPhone.

Foxconn has repeatedly come under fire for harsh working conditions. Late last month, a watchdog group released a study that criticized Foxconn for limited freedoms, inhumane treatment, and unsafe working conditions, among other things. An earlier Apple-commissioned report from the Fair Labor Association found abuses at Foxconn facilities, but said that the firm had agreed to make changes.

ABC's Nightline also gained access to a Foxconn factory recently, and did not uncover any particularly shocking conditions, while This American Life was forced to retract a controversial episode about Apple factories in China that featured storyteller Mike Daisey. An explosion at the Chengdu factory last year killed two workers and injured 16 others.

Watchdog Group Slams Foxconn Working Conditions (Again)

<snip>

SACOM also said that workers are forced to sign up for a company-controlled union without knowing what that entails. They must also endure "humiliating" disciplinary action like the writing and reading of confession letters and manual labor like toilet cleaning.

Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is not the first time SACOM has criticized Foxconn. In May 2011, the group released a report that said most Foxconn employees were working long hours for little pay, battling exposure to dust and harmful chemicals, and undergoing "military style" training sessions.

Working conditions at Foxconn have received a lot of press lately, prompting the Apple-sponsored FLA inspections. ABC's Nightline also gained access to a Foxconn factory recently, which did not uncover any particularly shocking conditions, while This American Life was forced to retract a controversial episode about Apple factories in China that featured storyteller Mike Daisey.
